I found out about Little India in a most unusual place. One of my 4 stays in the hospital in January. I was chatting with one of the NA's who is Somali. Of course the subject of food then spices came up. She said that this is the place to go and I finally got over here. I needed chili powder and a mild curry powder. One of the first things I see is a variety of air sprays. I couldn't resist musk and one was in Arabic. I spotted canned baked beans and fava beans on the way out. Lots of good drinks, I picked up a pure delight lemonade. I had to get tea bags at an Indian store. I got the Baraka Ceylon. Lots of employees here and many helped me since I don't know what anything is. I asked about the homemade samosas. Weekends only after 3. I'll make a special trip for that. read more

Living in Minneapolis- this is our go to Asian grocery store in NE Minneapolis because of the meat market inside- with a good selection at affordable prices. There is a Indian dessert selection too which looks pretty but sometimes have desserts that are overdue- so I recommend going somewhere else for Indian sweets or asking when it was made before buying. Although I like the snacks, drinks and small produce area- I found that sometimes they're going bad as well (a common problem I find at some Asian grocery stores it seems)- so I say double check expiration dates or check out other Asian grocery stores nearby. BUT I would say that I generally found the staff to be friendly and willing to give good recommendations on brands/spices I had questions about. I will never shop here again. As a matter of fact, I'm taking back everything I bought there yesterday. I have been shopping here for about 4 years and yesterday was the last straw. They are so rude and disrespectful to their customers. I asked a simple question about what was in some samosa they had and the cashier snapped at me and spoke very condescending and rude to me. I wanted to tell him to forget it and walk out but I didn't and it has been bothering me. I refuse to keep circulating money in places I'm not wanted and respected. This is usually where I end up when in need of Indian groceries, which is more often than you'd think because I'm addicted to mint chutney and have to buy the giant jar on the regular. I haven't done a full exploration of the store because I usually get distracted by the cheap cilantro, the chutneys and the frozen food section (especially the paneer and all the breads: naan, parathas, rotis, etc.). From what I have seen though, they have a solid selection of veggies, spice mixes, Indian fried snacks, sweets, fish, halal meat, rice, daal and basically most of the staples of Indian cooking. It's not exactly the Ritz, so you can expect an odd smell (maybe from the fish? I couldn't figure it out yesterday.). They have a free parking lot in the back, plus there's usually street parking in the front. ATTENTION: This is NOT an Indian-owned store! While they may carry products from India, the owners show preference for Muslim customers (I think the owners are Pakistani or Bangladeshi). This is a meat shop (not sure if the meat is clean or butchered under sanitary conditions). It is NOT an Indian store, more of a Halal shop for those who are from Pakistan and Bangladesh. To reiterate another review, this store is HUGE. It's a great place to pick up all kinds of Indian spices (powdered and whole, cummin, coriander, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, mustard, cayenne/chilli, mango powder, heeng/asafoetida...), lentils of every imaginable kind, different kinds of flours (wheat, millet etc.), different kinds of rice (including basmati), an incredible variety of Indian counterparts of potato chips (if you're eating these it's no use cautioning you about the high fat content). Their freezer section is loaded with all kinds of frozen vegetables, prepared appetizers (the samosas are excellent) and entrees, and all kinds of rotis and parathas. They also carry incense, tea, pickels, sauces, fresh vegetables (green papaya, daikon, Japanese eggplant, Asian spinach, fenugreek greens, pea tips, many kinds of green beans, green mangoes, etc.), cooking oil (mustard oil and ghee too). The store used to be a lot busier before but with many more Indian groceries in the suburbs and in the city, it''s a lot quieter these days. The store right next door is also co-owned by them and carries halal zabiha beef and goat meat, and a mind-boggling variety of frozen fresh-water and sea fish from Bangladesh, Thailand, and India. read more

First, this place is huge! they've got just about every category of goods you could want (fresh produce, packaged, frozen, homemade sweets counter, beauty products, etc). Plus, don't miss the room to the back left that stores massive bags of rice. Second, the owners/employees were so helpful. It was clear I didn't know what I needed or where it was (stopped in to pick up some Diwali treats), and they were nice enough to explain my options and put together an assorted tray for me. Third, great prices! Since my assortment was put together right there, I didn't know the cost since I didn't ask. When they rang me up, I was pleasantly surprised. This place is great!! The guys running this store are absolutely great. Great things about this store- good parking in the back, great connectivity to downtown Minneapolis and a great car washing place across the street. The meat store is great. They have the usual stuff (chicken, lamb etc.). They have two kinds of lamb- the frozen one is way cheaper but is just as good. Their lamb, is way cheaper than comparative places like Holyland. The great things about this store which makes me visit the store over and over again are: 1. The are very close to Downtown 2. Downtown connectivity is great 3. They stock meat and cater to your specifications 4. The parking is great 5. The place is generally better stocked overall than competitors 6. The owners are extremely nice 7. My husband & I went here today, primarily to pick up rice and chapati's. We ended up finding so many excellent things in this store, that we left with the aforementioned plus a lot more... including, fresh veggies/produce (okra, tindora, curry leaves, chilies), frozen naan, incense, Kumkum (for Ganesh Puja today, plus we didn't have any, which we've felt we've needed, more for when family come to visit us), 3 kinds of pickle (tomato, lime & cut mango), lentils for dal.... it was kind of ridiculous :) This store is HUGE. There is a video store in the back, a restaurant that is attached, silver serving spoons, wooden spoons, puja items plus much more are to the left and rear of the store, and a rack with a little bit of clothing are at the front of the store. Plus, you can buy tabla's from behind the counter! My husband and I thought that was neat (he used to take lessons as a kid). The prices seemed reasonable, and they had a very large selection of everything. We'll definitely be back here. Street parking is free (I wasn't aware there was a part of Minneapolis that didn't have meters!) So that was a nice discovery. This review is for the buffet they have everyday and I have a love hate relationship with it.sometimes the food just wows you and sometimes it hits you right in the face with so many lefts that you will be begging for a right. Ok food is great but the selection is repetitive.. I stay around the corner and office lunches and family lunches happen a lot here so I am disappointed at the selection they have as after the 3rd time I could guess exactly what food is going there and sometimes my gamble does not pay off.. This is a great Indian store to pick up dry & frozen goods at, but I usually avoid the veggies. They are connected to the butcher's shop next door (you gotta walk through the connecting door to pay for your meat when you visit the butcher!) Pwns every other Indian grocery in the Twin Cities. I found jaggery here. I've only ever seen that online.. It has all the things you go to an Indian market for: butcher counter, (goat brains, anyone?) home made sweets, a massive freezer, tea things, biscuit things, the BIG bags of rice, housewares, fresh samosas. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of this massive store. It's a bit cluttered (I found one of the spices I was looking for in a big pile on one of the shelves) and resists the United Noodles-fication of ethnic grocery stores trend, but I consider that a good thing. read more

The coconut oil and dates are always top on my list when I shop here. Herbs, spices and incense to burn for they even have supplies for Kali Puja. Quite a selection of foods in bulk too. There is a wait for 30 mins if you planning to buy halal meat at this store , if you are from a specific religion the store manager may use his influence to get your orders faster. I was in the line today to get Indian fish and chicken and there were 4 people behind me , suddenly a 5th person in line went and asked store manager to get his order first .. all i heard was salam wallekum between the store manager and the 5th customer in line. The owner asked the person serving meat at meat shop to serve the 5th person in line before me and the server did so and delayed my order by another 10 mins. Did n't like the behavior at all. Wish this behavior is noted by Patel brothers or owners. Not sure why this store is Patel brothers chain , this is more of a Muslim Meat shop serving halal meat and halal food items. read more

They offer a robust selection of spices, a good frozen food selection and also a small, but well stocked fresh produce section near the front. We have been going to this place for the past 3 months since it's next to our place, today as an eye opener something terrible happened and we decided not to step into this place any more. The reason being that, we bought a rice bag and after reaching home on opening it to our surprise we found worms and other insects crawling it's way in between the rice. After noticing this awful event we immediately rushed to the store to return the product. The cashier after acknowledging the insects tossed and turned the rice and reacted as if there were nothing in it. Only after showing the video which we took as proof he was half convinced and reluctantly offered us a refund. This shows their cheap mentality and hesitancy to serve their customers. Let me tell you something guys this place is very cramped and it doesn't even give you a good shopping experience. Only recently it came to our notice that they sell expired products and rotten veggies. We would definitely not recommend this place even though they have varieties of Indian products. Pls check the expiry dates before you pick up anything from this place...! My first time today at this store and I had to create a profile just to post this review. I usually shop at Pooja Grocery or TBS for Indian stuff. Today I went with another colleague as he had mentioned that you also get mutton here. Assortment is good, but you have to be careful with the expiry dates on each product to ensure you are not coming home with a fossilized thing. They carry a wide range of products, and I was pleasantly surprised. I picked up a lot of things, ranging from snacks, sweets, shampoo and even some fresh chicken...! I would have surely rated this place higher, but for my experience with a dessert I bought - rasgulla. This is sold by a famous company called Haldiram and in the past I have never had a problem with this product. The tin had a printed expiry date of July-2013. So I safely assumed it should be fine. I opened the tin only to find a funny smell. I should have been wiser. But I took my first spoonful, and literally threw up...! I have never felt this let down. I am not sure if this is a product issue or a storage problem at this grocers but this was ridiculous. Overall, great assortment as I mentioned, but pls be very careful of the expiry dates on anything you pick up. read more

Firstly I was in sweet section area waiting for helper to help me but none showed up for 15min then later one worker comes and gives sweet to another customer before me when I was first. Little India was Patel Grocers before. After a split, Patel is in Bloomington and they renamed this store Little India. They have a store called Super Meat Market, where they will sell you EXPIRED frozen stuff. Once you bring it home and thaw, your neighbor will run out of their home because of the stink it raises. It is frozen AND ROTTEN. I challenge you to find anything in that fish store ( or with most food items they sell in their grocery store) that has expiry dates printed. YOU WON'T FIND IT. We had the same experience. We bought some totally rotten ( but frozen rohu fish). And once we came back, they refused to exchange and refund. Their excuse: I didn't bring the bad fish soon enough for them to resell it to some other (unfortunate) customer. What a logic. They qualify for the 2012 Presidential Debate, hands down. We have been a customer with them for 10+ years. Once the owner Nayeem (the only sensible guy in the whole store) is not in the store, his brain-dead brothers deal with the customers with Iron Fist, and speak to them once in a while, as and when they get a chance to catch their breath from incessant Paan Chewing.
