Commissioners met here to run boundary in 1764. Popular stop for colonial travelers. Ruins used to establish present state line in 1928. Located 2 3/4 miles southeast." Online, "The Boundary House in Brunswick County earned its name because it straddled the boundary line for the Carolinas. One part of the building was in North Carolina and the other part in South Carolina. The house, sometimes referred to in documents as the Club House, was reported to have been "two and one-half miles and forty-four poles from the sea." The Boundary House is mentioned in early records, including designation as the meeting place for the boundary surveyors in 1764 and as a stop on Hugh Finlay's postal inspection tour of 1774. It appears on a United States Coast and Geodetic Survey map of 1873. A monument to the Boundary House, placed at its ruins, was used in the 1928 survey of the Carolinas' dividing line. C. B. Berry, a South Carolina surveyor who researched the Boundary House believed that it was built around 1750, after the original boundary line was run, and situated such that the line ran down the middle of the structure's center hallway. "The best known incident at the Boundary House did not involve the running of a boundary line, but involved the accessibility to South Carolina territory that the meeting place offered. In 1805 Benjamin Smith, future Governor of North Carolina, had a disagreement with his cousin Judge Alfred Moore. Because of Alfred Moore's poor health, the matter was taken up by Moore's brother Captain Maurice Moore, who challenged Smith to a duel. Since dueling was outlawed in North Carolina, officials from Brunswick attempted to thwart the contest. The duellists, their seconds, and their chosen physicians fled across the state line to South Carolina, where duels were legal. The North Carolina officers met with the dueling parties at the Boundary House, with the officers on the North Carolina side of the hall and the duelists and their attendants on the South Carolina side. The duel took place on South Carolina soil nearby. Smith was injured but recovered in the matter of a couple of weeks." This is marker D-79 and it was cast in 1976. I was visiting family down in this part of the country for the past week and during one of our…read moreadventures together we passed by the old Myrtle Beach Train Depot. This railway station has not been in public service since the 1950's I was told but the building still stands and on the nearby rails stand both a decommissioned box car and caboose. Neither of these is open for public exploration inside but the train depot building itself is. Inside the small facility are numerous photographs from across the stations history and a few related relics. There is a time capsule as well which was sealed in May of 2004 and is set to be opened in May of 2054. In the rear of the station which probably originally served as the waiting room area and some office space is a publicly accessible room but I did not go into it as there was a family function happening at the time. My guess is that they rent this room out and let people bring in catered fare. You can stand on the place where the platform used to let passengers on and off but mind your step and the same can be said for the tracks. The two cars can be posed in front of by I discourage climbing on them as all for the sake of your own safety. I was glad we chanced upon this since the photos will make for good blogging and Instagram material.

We were here to pay a tax on our new vehicles before heading to the DMV to get our licenses. Went to the assessors office, in the lobby was a friendly person who walked us in the right direction on where to go. She also answered our questions on applying for residentcy here. She supplied us with a list and lots of information which was helpful. We then went to the assessors office, and by the time we got there, there was no line. Person was friendly, and we took care of business. Pleasant transaction despite lots of papers. We then also went to the treasurer's office to pay the balance that was assessed. Everyone was pleasant at that office.

The library offers printing for a small fee and has many computers available for free public use. There's also a clearly separated children's book area, which helps keep the space organized and family-friendly. Right when you walk in, you can browse retired library books for sale at a steep discount--often just $1--which is such a fun bonus. My favorite feature is how easy it is to order books online and place them on hold--they'll text you as soon as your book is ready for pickup, which is incredibly convenient. Overall, a well-run, accessible library that makes great use of its space and services. Highly recommend.

Then I began thinking do I just miss accessing the computers, or do I miss the library in its entirety? The latter was most accurate, ya know. So even though I spend most of my time on the computers, It's the unique learning environment, character, and community that I missed. Regardless of how I may feel day to day.
