We visited Little Tijuana in Newark, NJ because we were looking for a fun place for drinks and food on a Wednesday night. (visiting from Houston,TX) The music was good, the lighting is a vibe, the flowers are cute, and our server was courteous. It was not a busy night at all. (Practically empty) We ordered the Mexican Shrimp and the Surf and Turf Burritos. The burrito is big enough to share. I personally did not enjoy the sauce on the side for the burrito because it was too salty in my opinion. The Mexican shrimp was tasty. We waited a 45+min for our appetizer, but I was glad the waiter kept updating us on the status. The overall experience was ok. This place is definitely hyped up on TikTok. Another gimmicky spot with medicore food and drinks. If you come here, you're paying for the ambiance. First, let's start with the joke called "valet." For $20, you pull into a small lot with about 20 spaces. Most valet you hand the keys over, and they park your car. Well, here we parked our own. Same thing on checkout. The attendant handed me the keys to pull out my own car, so tell me why this is called valet again, and I'm charged $20???? Onto the food. I should have known what was coming when they handed us what seemed like chips from a bag and Salsa in a plastic container. Taco Bell vibes. I ordered Carne asada, but it should have been called Carne fria because while the chimmicuri was tasteful, the meat temp was cooler than room temp. The rice and beans were just as cool. Odd. My partner had tacos, and he said they were good enough, so that was good. Drinks: medicore at best. How hard is it to make a flavorful margarita? Very watered down. My partner ordered the Coco Loco and it was a glass of complete sugar. A good drink should be a perfect balance of alcohol and whatever mixers. We pretty much ate and left. There is also a "photographer" walking around to take expensive pics that you can take yourself. There is no obligation to buy, but if you dont enjoy photo sessions, tell him no from the start. He takes quite a few. Overall, we tried this place because it was close to Prudential Center, and it's been on the social media circuit but its definitely a one and done spot for us. I suppose if you're a young adult looking for a chill place, this would work. The aesthetic of the place is nice but thats where it ends. I came here twice and sadly both times I was very underwhelmed. The drinks, the aesthetic and the music here were fun but when it came to the service and the food, it was extremely lacking. The first time I came, our drinks took over 30 minutes to come, the food even longer. I had the chicken enchiladas during my first visit and it was pretty tasty so I ordered them again on my second visit. I figured since they were relatively new I would give them the benefit of the doubt so I decided to try again a month later. On my second trip, I made a reservation and were seated quickly. However, we were seated for 30 minutes at a dirty table with no one to greet us or place orders. I asked a waitress passing by who was cleaning the tables to clean it but was met with a distasteful attitude about how it was not her section. Once we finally got a waitress to take our orders, I ordered the same dish again since I enjoyed it the first time but this time, the enchiladas were not good. They were drenched in this tomato sauce that made the dish look more like lasagna than enchiladas. The different rooms with the various aesthetics were fun and playful but I just could not enjoy my time there because of the stinky additiudes and service. I was also shocked to see that they immediately placed a 22% gratuity when the service and food were certainly not worthy of such a high tip. Tried it for the first time a week ago. We were seated quickly and the server was great. Decor was very intriguing and lively which was nice. Huge transformation from the bar/lounge that use to be there. We were seated close to the exit so we didn't see much of the back or inside. The food was very delicious, a bit pricey for a Mexican restaurant but overall a great experience. I ordered the quesadilla which was about $18 and my friends ordered steak $24. Super cute ambiance. Multiple places to take nice pictures. Street parking is scarce, but they have valet for $20. There is a patio seating (outside), "outside" seating (it's really indoor but covered), and indoor seating which is bar and booth area. There is a nightclub section too as well. Presentation was great for the drinks and food, however the food lacked taste. Everything needed more seasoning to give it some flavor. The lobster tostada is cold lobster not hot for those who like theirs warm. The shrimp app was better than my entree, chili lime shrimp. The plate gave me high expectations because it looked so good but nothing had taste. Wouldn't order again. We thought our corn would be on the cobb like we've seen others order around us. No complaints about the taste just not sure why ours came shaved. Also each table gets complimentary chips and salsa, my friend didn't like the salsa maybe because it looked different than Norma salsa, but I liked it. There was a 90 min seating limit, but we were there for like 2.5 hours before it actually got busy so I guess they aren't as strict until guests who actually have reservations arrive. Was very excited to try this place and Yelp something exciting in Newark as I love all things Mexican. Circled the block 1 million times to find a parking space only to get to the door and be denied access inside the venue because it's a "lounge" starting at 6pm and they have a dress code. There is nothing on their website but a downloadable menu so will be very hard to know in advance that 1) was a lounge 2) what time it transitions to a lounge 3) what the dress code entails. Went to Little Tijuana Saturday night for a pre fixe birthday dinner. The food servers were great in terms of of attentiveness but they forgot to bring out the ribs and beans with the other entrees. They also did not provide enough of the entrees for a 17 person group, we had to ask for extras. The drinks are better from the inside bar. Could be because the outdoor bar was slammed and got sloppy with the drinks. The absolute worst moment of the night was at the end when the group was taking pictures in front of the pretty backgrounds. The backgrounds are located by the front entrance. The staff located by the entrance were so rude about the group taking photos and the woman with the yellow blonde hair actually pushed one of the members of the group. They claimed they weren't allowed to let people inside until we cleared the area which is absolutely ridiculous because there were literally three people at the door. You would think after spending 2k they would treat their clientele with respect and class. Never again. Would advise everyone to celebrate their important celebrations somewhere else. read more

I really can't praise the level of service here enough in this review. From introduction, our waitress Brianna was extremely pleasant. At the time of this review, I feel compelled to highlight this as the black community has experienced very exclusive behavior from the latin restaurants in the area recently. Little Tijuana has promptly ensured they will not be grouped into that category. Staff and management are compassionate and inclusive. I must admit, I am a major foodie and there were a few items we didn't love and immediately sent back. We thought the night and dinner was a bust until the owner Rafael came over to remediate our issues. This wasn't a stop and go chat either. He sat down and built an amazingly genuine rapport with us, during which we learned that this restaurant is only 3 months old! Rafael comped our bill for the things we didn't like, and personally brought out a free round of drinks and his recommended faves, the cauliflower tacos. Now, I am a moderately healthy eater M-F. But it was Saturday night and all I was thinking was "calories baby" (lol), so we were a bit hesitant of the suggestion of cauliflower. But Let me stop you right now if you are turning your nose up too: GET THE FREAKIN CAULIFLOWER TACOS!!! OMG! They were so good we ended up ordering two more of these. 5 stars Have I forgotten to mention that this place is gorgeous!? We were seated on the indoor patio which is adorned by the cutest celebratory sombreros. The DJ was playing a diverse variety of music complementary of the age and make up of ALL the patrons there. Although the hostess tried to brush me off initially when I called about them "The manager says he didn't see them" , I insisted on speaking with the manager. I understand that employees do not necessarily always reflect the intentions of the owners and management being a business owner, so we will let that one slide. *side eye to hostess* Surprise, surprise! The manager "Larry" had seen them and they were put away safely by the cleaning staff. Larry found out where they were secured, and called me back to pick them up within a few hours. The drinks were very good though. Overall, we did enjoy ourselves with the music and each other company. They advertise that they have parking but the lot uncomfortably fits about 5-7 cars. We went with my family to celebrate a birthday, all the apps including their guac and shrimp were fresh and delicious. I called this place a few days ago to inquire about making reservations/bottle service and I literally had the girl on the other end sigh on the phone seemingly annoyed by my questions. She didn't really answer any questions and wasn't the friendliest either. The first person you see or speak to is the face of the business so usually that would've been the first and final the nail in the coffin BUT I decided to stop in because I wanted to give it a fair shot. Unfortunately, as soon as we came in the hostesses were not attentive at all and did not give us a reason as to why we were waiting (amongst other groups) when there were plenty of tables open when we arrived. Eventually (maybe 20 mins or so later) we were seated at one of the open tables. The food menu is very small and so is the mixed drink menu. The frozen margaritas machine was down so that made a couple of the specialty drinks out of the question...making the selection even more limited. We got our drinks at least 25 minutes to half an hour after ordering (one of them being a soda). Our appetizer (loaded fries I believe) was good. Approximately half an hour after that we got our entrees which were honestly really bad. Like, really bad. Beans tasted like if they literally just opened a can of black beans and scooped some in... no flavor and they were cold. White rice had an odd taste...almost fishy Enchiladas had a strange thick and chunky sauce which honestly makes me gag just thinking about it and a brown sauce that was wiped off the side of the plate. None of my food (or my date's food)had brown sauce but the side of my plate had brown sauce wiped off the slide of the plate by (possibly?) a finger And the tacos had no flavor. Not to mention the tacos were 16$ for a plate of 3 small ones. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying for good food. I've been to plenty of delicious hole in the walls and fancy 5 star rated restaurants in the City and everything in between...so I definitely do not mind paying or traveling for tasty food and a decent dining experience. What I don't like is feeling scammed. Which is precisely how I feel. Drinks were in whiskey glasses and full (and I mean FULL) of ice. My dull margarita was about 5 or 6 sips long and if memory serves me correct $13. Food was gross. There are so many employees all over the place but most don't seem to know what they're doing. There was even a waitress literally dragging her feet to the table she was dropping the food off to. You can't make this up! Even my date said she made the meal look so unappetizing because it was like she was annoyed to be there.  This was by far the worst dining experience I've had in a really long time. It's such a shame because in all honesty the restaurant is really visually appealing with tons of spots for cute photo ops. This place would be a huge success if they properly trained their staff. It would be a shame to see such a visually appealing place close because the food and service leaves MUCH to be desired. Oh, did I mention they included tip already on the bill for only 2 people? We usually always tip our servers at least 20% but they should at the very least let patrons know that tip will be added to the bill.  I believe its the ethical thing to do.  Overall, this was a huge disappointment.
