We came for a spoken word event called "Identity", a production of the Story Collider, which cost only $10/adult. This event had 5 scientists get on stage and provide stories of their lives and how science played a part in their self discovery. The Highland Inn Ballroom was an excellent choice for this event. Intimate feel, but enough seats to seat a full room of folks. Small stage, but again, increased intimate feel, adjacent full bar that was active and serving customers throughout the night., and lots of lovely interior to stroll through and photograph. About the only thing I could complain about was that at times the AC didn't appear to be working as well as it could, and it was very warm. Even the warm temperature was addressed Parking for the Highland Inn...I laughed when I saw the lot, because it's "THAT" lot that enforces parking if you're trying to slip in for lunch at a nearby restaurant, including Sweet Auburn BBQ, which is next door. That definitely burns you when you're hungry, but you smile when you're going to the inn, since that parking is yours! From N. Highland Ave, the lot goes down sharply since the lot is on a downward slope, but there is an exit at the bottom of the hill that exits out to Blue Ridge ave. Nice! Staff were friendly, the lounge was good for the event, and this hidden in plain site place is worth checking out.

Plenty of room for 150 people or so to mix and mingle, and the wait for the bar was never long. With a $6 special for well drinks, I was a happy girl. Keep an eye out for future book readings here, usually in partnership with A Cappella Books. For an author you like, it's definitely worth the time and expense. The staff is welcoming and friendly, and will happily call a cab for you at the end of the evening.

If you have driven much between Midtown and Buckhead, odds are that you've passed this castle-like house before. Parking is across Spring Street in a dedicated lot (underneath an on-ramp to the connector). You then just cross the street and are behind the home itself. We entered via the front door which faces Peachtree Street. Our tour lasted about an hour and focused on the architecture and history of the home. It was constructed early in the 20th century and has a lot of nice details (woodwork, light fixtures, wall murals, etc.). The tour does not include the upstairs (which is now office space for the historic trust that operates the site). It does include a brief visit to the basement, which is just an average semi-finished space. There is also a room with historical photos of the surrounding area - the shopping plaza that was built later and which surrounded the home on three sides at one point (only one 'arm' of derelict shops still exists). I recall when the Rhodes Theater was still in operation (showing older and/or cult films). I've driven by here countless times and it was nice to actually get an in-depth tour of the property. This is definitely worth doing once if you live in the area or have an interest in architecture.

So it was really an easy choice for my partner and I who married on Sunday, April 24th, 2016. We had 95 guests with our ceremony on the steps, cocktail and reception split inside and out so that the dance floor could be in the reception. It was a bit windy for the piping drape and urns so be certain you weight down well. Chrystal was a true joy, her experience with the venue gave her the knowledge to make great suggestions. While we did add florals and décor on the tables and mantels, we kept them in the feel of the home very lush and loose. We wanted people to explore the home the whole evening, not just for ceremony or dinner. We put the bar into the den so it was just off the dance floor (in the reception hall ) and would keep people flowing through the home even after dinner. She offered to work with us every step of the way and was always easy to reach when needed. I got my cake bar in the parlor with my 60" rounds plus sweetheart table and the rest of the guests were either seated in the library or on the porch. Dinner was buffet style, then we all returned for dancing and mingling. Several did mingle on the front and side porches, taking photos of the home, ceremony or photo backdrop. The day of is truly a whirlwind, the staff was on top of everything. I'm very hands on and they wouldn't allow me to do anything. = ) I too, returned from my honeymoon to find my security deposit check had been returned. It was even easy to pick up the cooler we realized had been left there about 2 weeks we later. I can't wait to see the rest of our photos as the peeks I've gotten have been amazing! I reached out to The Slate Room the next morning and was blown away by how easy and seamless the booking process was. Not only did they have availability, but the space ended up being even better than my original venue in every way. The location is prime, the pricing is more than fair, and the space itself is absolutely stunning. It's the perfect outdoor-hybrid setup and worked flawlessly for my party. Josh and Chavien were incredibly professional, kind, and transparent about everything from the very beginning. They walked me through all the features of the venue, answered every question I had, and made sure I felt fully supported. What really stood out to me was the level of care! Josh even came back the morning after my event to help a guest who thought they had left something behind. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare and so appreciated. Thanks to The Slate Room, what could have been a stressful disaster turned into one of the best nights ever. I truly believe my party was better because it happened here. If you're looking for a beautiful, flexible venue with great energy and even better people, this is the one. I will recommend The Slate Room every chance I get. The catering (outside vendor) was also located inside & dropped the ball on many aspects...with no fault of the Slate Room. I have never seen a large table covered in saran wrap serving as a charcuterie board with no serving utensils, mini plates & the much need for Hand Sanitizer. I digress to the outside, aside from the covered patio with sofas (they need to be replaced), picnic tables & a few chairs, the seating layoff were off. Now, depending on the packages - perhaps different setups with furniture &, etc may be offered. The parking logistics were very unpleasing. The parking space is shared, so 1st come 1st park. The neighboring businesses have parking spaces yet with the security outside they will let you know if you can park there or direct you somewhere else & with a small trek. The concept is great, yet the logistics could use some tweaking.

I've been to two, so far, and have been extremely impressed with the quality of entertainment and the convenience of the venue. The first concert was a cover band for Queen who really offered a convincing performance, and the second was the Dazz Band, an R&B/Funk band that's been performing since the 70s. Both shows were fabulous and well-attended without being too overcrowded. Covered parking was available below ground and was free. You can reserve tables near the stage, but most people just bring their own folding chairs and picnics and seating is first come, first serve. Food trucks at the site are available, but there are plenty of nearby restaurants offering takeaway food, if you don't want to bring your own. Alcohol is permitted, though glass is not. There appears to be ample security onsite and it felt very safe. Even outdoors and 88 degree weather, it was surprisingly comfortable after the sun went down. They offered free fans to use during the second show and free 3M ear plugs for both shows. Both shows had an opening band that started at 7:30 PM and the main act started about an hour later. This has been my favorite discovery of the year, so far, and definitely recommend it for anyone who likes 1) live music and 2) free stuff.

Now the cons; **For an event space, it's an odd shape, long and narrow. ** The industrial heaters and rafters hanging 20 feet up cant be hidden easily. So if you are hoping to completely camouflage the interior, you'll have a tough time. **The walls are cinderblock and painted in a light color.This makes the drabness stand out. The owners should paint the entire interior black (or white). There are multiple colors going up the wall that make it look like a workshop or oil change place (which I think it was). ** The back has an overhead, garage style door that needs to be covered. ** Is there heat or air conditioning? When I was there, the front door was kept open, so I cant be sure. Make sure to ask when inquiring. ** NARROW!!! You enter into a small front room, then a narrow hallway, then a kitchen/bar area on the right, and stairs to the loft on your left. It makes the area very crowded.
