Live Oak Brewing Company is one of Austin's oldest breweries, best known for traditional German and Czech style lagers, especially its hefeweizen, pilsner, and seasonal lagers using old world brewing techniques. Founded in 1997 by Chip McElroy, Live Oak was built with a simple idea "make beer for people who actually like the taste of beer." In 2015, Live Oak moved to their current location on a beautiful property along the Colorado River, opening a taproom and biergarten. One its unique features...it's off the beaten path of other breweries. Live Oak Brewing is north of the airport and backs to the Fast Park remote airport parking lot. At first glance it looks like it's a convergence of a fire station and deserted manufacturing plant. The grounds are impeccable...tall statuesque trees, lush green vegetation and an extensive outside biergarten. It feels like you are in a nature bubble. Interestingly, Live Oak Brewing has its own on site 18 hole disc golf course (different from traditional golf) located directly on the brewery's property. Live Oak Brewing's interior has the feel of a German Hofbräu...homey, spacious, and welcoming, with long communal tables that encourage conversation and human interaction. You can see directly into the brewing space, with large tanks and equipment. Also, board games are available if you choose to play. Live Oak is family friendly and dog friendly. In fact, Groot, the owner's dog, freely roams through the brewery drinking area. While I only had sips of beer (not a big beer drinker), my friends enjoyed their beers. Great brewery! Different location close to the airport but handy if you have a long connection :) It's really nice outdoors with big trees and even a disc golf course. We stopped in on a recent road trip and had a great time. We were greeted by a well-mannered poodle! We tried the Hefeweizen and the Big Bark amber lager. Both were tasty and refreshing on a hot day. They have a food truck (The Black Forest) on site that was excellent. They have plenty of seating inside and on the patio. They also have a disc golf course and they sell the discs at the brewery. Getting another brewery off of my wish list that was on there for a bit. Steve and I had their Oktoberfest beer which was a nice one to enjoy for that particular beer season. Flavor highlights are about the same as most Oktoberfest Festbiers which would be a malty, hoppy and sweet flavors as you savor this beer. And of course... swag, swag, swag. I had to check out their swag shop and got an awesome t shirt where the logo pays homage to Heavy Metal music so after enjoying the beer, buying some swag I felt like I had a complete brewery experience with Live Oak that was a pleasant one! read more

I went to check this place out because I was entitled to a free beer through the "Barks for Beers" charity campaign. (Good on them for participating!) On a Tuesday night, it was quiet. The bartender gave me excellent service. I had the Big Bark Amber Lager, which was quite good. It can be hard to find an amber (much less a red or a brown), so I appreciated this. I also had a Pre-War Pils, which was fine, but nothing to write home about. I was hoping to eat, so I was disappointed that the food trucks were closed on Tuesdays. They do offer potato chips. One big negative for me is that the beers are weak. As I recall, they had only one beer over 5.7% alcohol, and that was a monster 9% smoked doppelbock. Most were between 3% and 5%. (The website says they have a handful of stronger seasonal beers.) The other big negative is that it's way in the middle of nowhere. I always take an Uber when I expect to drink, and this was a rather expensive trip, even from South Austin. TL;DR: It's fine, but nothing special. I guess I'd go back if I could tag along with a friend who was going anyway, but on the whole, I'm not in a hurry to go back. read more

I always enjoy a trip out to Live Oak Brewing. Their Hefeweizen is my favorite by far. I also learned you can get fruit flavors added. Highly recommend the pineapple and grapefruit! They have eight beers on tap that they brew on site. Each is 4.4% to 5.4% ABV (one is 3%). They definitely lean German / Czech / Polish with their brewing style, which is a great brewing style. And they do that well. I also like the music they play there. It sets up a good vibe. You can sit inside on one of six extra benches (easily seat 8 people each comfortably). We weren't offered a menu, so not sure if they offer snacks or anything but if so, they weren't proactively offering them. They also have a very cool and large outdoor space. But it is definitely not on beaten path. There aren't any businesses next door. Still, if I head to airport to pick someone up and their flight is delayed, this is where I'm heading. read more

As an establishment, this location is pretty awesome. Outdoor seating is more vast than what's inside. A good portion of it is covered next to the building. Other areas are in very heavily shaded areas amongst the trees. Inside it's very wood rustic, with a cabin feel to it. They have a shelf full of board games for those that wish to sit and chill for a while with the brews. The bar is pretty wide. Had 2 taps from what I saw. The beers appear to be mostly German types of Pilsners and such. The two beers I had were really good. Now, for the staff, I had the same tall dark haired gentleman help me both times, and he was not the type of person I would hire for my staff when it comes to greeting an helping staff. I'm very much used to craft beers and I know what I like. Not being familiar with German beers, I mentioned my taste, and the attitude in his voice was a bit rude and very unfriendly. His first words were "there are German beers, we don't have Ales and Blondes". I already knew this, which is why I asked for assistance in making a decision. I've visited many breweries, and this is one that if I lived nearby would easily find myself at every week. Do yourself a favor and visit! Visited this place on a wonderful Friday afternoon. The place has a wonderful atmosphere and great food and drinks. There's ample seating inside, and a nice covered patio right outside the main entrance. The place also has a Frisbee golf course, and I saw several people coming in and out from playing. I didn't go on the course, but it looked very nice from what I could see of it. The drinks: I got a flight of four beers. The flights here are very sizable; each pour is a half-liter, so it's a great start. - Fumigator: Couldn't get this in the flight, but bartender gave me a sample. If I hadn't wanted to try everything, I would have just drank this. Strong, rich flavor. Not too sweet, good smokiness. Very drinkable even on a warm day, but will hit you. - Doom Rauch: This one was so smoky and so good! A bock beer, it's got just the right amount of heaviness. Super flavorful and one I'd go back to any time. - Pre-War Pils: Normally I'm not a pilsner fan, but the bartender recommended it, and I'm glad she did. Light, but so complex, unlike so many "American" pilsners. I could see just about anyone sitting and enjoying this beer. - Grodziakle: A smoked Polish beer, it's much lighter on the smokiness compared to the Fumigator or Doom Rauch. Surprisingly, I liked the Pre-War Pils more, but still very enjoyable, and a good intro to smoked beers for this who don't know the style. - Big Bark: This one comes in last only because everything is so good. Heaviness is about in line with the Doom Rauch, lightly sweet, smooth finish. If I were visiting another brewery, I could see this being a top favorite. The food: - Pretzel: This is a big, perfectly cooked pretzel, with a nice bite to the outside and a pillowy soft interior. There was a lot of salt on it, which is one thing I don't like, but was easy enough to knock off. The mustard wasn't the best I've ever had, but was still solid. Beer cheese was fantastic, would have loved a little more. - Schnitzel sandwich: Oh, I shouldn't have shared this! Pretzel bun was fantastic, schnitzel was thin and perfectly seasoned and breaded. Got the aioli on the side, but next time I'd just get it on there. Lovely lemon flavor that complemented the bun and schnitzel so well. - Tater tots: Actually, I shouldn't have shred these, either! So crispy, perfectly seasoned. The dipping sauce was super good, but tots didn't need them. I loved all the fresh herbs on top, too, added some nice brightness to the dish. read more

Apparently the leashed dog policy does not apply to the owners as they allow their large dark gray standard poodle to run wild- in the hour we were there we watched it attack two other dogs and then come over and pee where the kids were playing and take a giant poop, right in the area where several children were playing. They were nowhere around, so I brought it to the attention of staff and while they apologized profusely and explained it was the owners dog and "he's just like that" they had no intention of cleaning up after their own dog or addressing the situation. My husband's favorite Hefeweizen is hands down Live Oaks. Just outside the Austin airport is this hidden gem. Their outside area has several picnic tables under a canopy of Live Oak trees that gives you the feeling you're in the middle of nowhere. The inside is cute and they have plenty of bathrooms, so I've never had to wait for the ladies room, which is always a plus. They have food trucks and their German one is my absolute favorite food truck. It's a great place to relax in the shade of a beautiful tree. read more

Before leaving Austin and catching our flight home, we made one final stop in the Lonestar state. We came to Live Oak brewing Company on a Monday afternoon for a drink before heading out. It is spitting distance from the airport and a nice spot to wait if you have to kill time before a flight. They offer a nice variety of beers and I think the main attraction is their disc golf course. We saw several people playing disc golf and enjoying a nice cold beer. They sell snacks like chips and pretzels but nothing homemade. I'm not sure if they have food trucks that rotate through or not. Plenty of parking and good beers. read more

One of my favorite local breweries until tonight! Their hef is my absolute favorite. We frequent this place pretty often however the bartenders tonight were completely disengaged. One of the guys (the taller of the two) seemed completely miserable and had a terrible attitude. He appeared as if everyone were bothering him and it was painful for him to be here. Live Oak Tap Room & Biergarten has 10 beers on tap (4 All Year Beers, 6 Rotating Seasonal beers). The beers are all low ABV, ranging from 3% - 5.2%, which is shockingly low range, but in keeping with traditional German style beers. Essentially, they are all session beers, which is what you want when imbibing in the Texas heat. It also lowers the risk of being/getting overly intoxicated. Having driven a distance to get here, that was a major plus for me. Staff is friendly and helpful and were cool under pressure during a well-attended event with continuously long lines (Alamo Drafthouse 25th Anniversary event). At no point did I feel like I was dealing with a burnt out beertender despite the long lines. They were more than happy to make suggestion and help with pronunciation of their German-named beers. They are a bit out of the way as they are located right by the airport. The bonus is seeing all of the planes landing from the Biergarten, which never gets old. read more

We headed over to live oak and had a great time on their 14 (?) hole course that winds throughout their land and is very well kept. After we played, we visited the Black Forest German food truck which is always parked in the parking lot. The potato salad is killer! I'm now conditioned to pay a visit to Live Oak before I fly out of the Austin airport. Location is key! Everytime I've been, I got the tasters. They're a little pricey for tasters. The standard for 4 tasters right now is $10, but Live Oak's are $14. They give great pours, come in cute wooden handles, and are equipped with little paper cards with beer info in it for the true beer nerds. I've never had to wait in a long line when I've come, but to be fair I've only come during the late afternoon. My favorite hands down is their Hefeweizen--there's a reason why it won awards! I really did not like the Smoaktoberfest. I love me some smoked flavors--mezcal, roasted tea, etc. BUT the Smoaktoberfest was not a winner...it reminded me of goji berries, which I do not like. I wish their German food truck would open when the brewery was open. Both times I've been it wasn't open, and I've wanted to get real food while I was here before heading to the airport. That was a big bummer. However, Live Oak does have some snacks for those who get hungry. I've had their Zapp's potato chips and their pretzels with the green chile flavor. They were alright, but kinda pricey. I would suggest bringing your own snacks. Keep it light though, like chips or something. Their restrooms are very spacious and clean, and I love that they have outdoor AND indoor seating galore. Great space for all group sizes, but I've never seen dogs here. I did see someone bring their kid, so I think that's okay. There is an abundance of parking for all car sizes. The drive there is kinda shady as you turn off from the freeway (like broken windows in cars that are parked along the road, and oooooold cars that look like they've been abandoned for years), so be sure to keep valuables hidden or with you when you go into the brewery. Oh Live Oak Brewing Company do I love you so! You are always friendly, safe, spacious, and shaded for me and my company when we head out to enjoy your delicious and fresh beers. I have had a leaving-to-a-new-gig goodbye party here where there was plenty of outdoor space for us to hang out, drink beer, and enjoy company with coworkers here pre-pandemic. Easy parking, lots of space to move around and/or play outdoor games, and never a fuss with separate tabs and closing out your tab. Most recently we came for a friends birthday on a late Saturday afternoon and this place was buzzing with lots of other families and parties enjoying their beers under the nice big oak trees. I highly recommend you lathering the SPF or sunscreen if you are going to be under a tree or even if you are in the shade especially in spring or summer times. There will be plenty of picnic tables and areas for you to choose even if it does seem or look crowded when you walk in. I was really impressed with how the set up is at Live Oak now in pandemic times. There is one single line to order your beer(s), 2-3 servers helping at 1 long table, easy and no contact for paying or opening up your tab, and clear signage and offerings on what beers they got on tap, in bottles/cans, and to-go as well. Everyone in line are very patience and polite in giving you 6 feet distance as you wait to place your order. There is 1 food truck, The Black Forest, onsite that also offers contactless payment and has the best German snacks and food. I highly recommend the pimento cheese if you see it on the menu. You are also welcomed to bring your own food to enjoy as you sip on some tasty beers. All Covid precautions in place. Because of the extra precautions, it does take a while at the ordering/pick up table. Understandable. I ordered their sour, The Gose Coriander Salt Sour (where they add a flavored syrup of your choosing to it). I love sours but just found the flavor of this one kind of weird. Almost "smoky" tasting. I can't say enough good things about this brewery. Great brew selection, clean, modern-and their outdoor space is quite inviting. Plenty of seating to go around and lots of trees provide ample shade. It's so large that you can take a nice stroll and find cool little hidden spots to just chill.
