3.5 stars My friends had been raving about Lobo for years. It was their neighborhood spot that they would frequent themselves, but also the place to which they would bring all of their guests. After turning down several opportunities to join them in the far off land of Brooklyn, I finally agreed to make the trek and give the restaurant a shot. The Cobble Hill area was really charming, and Lobo was located on one of the main streets that was packed with restaurants, coffeeshops, and small retailers. When I arrived at Lobo, I did not see my friends in the bar area on the ground floor and was told to check the back garden. I found my group out in the quiet, cozy yard and joined them at the spacious table. The weather was a bit chilly, especially as the night wore on, and it was even raining at one point. However, there was a covering that completely shielded us from the elements. In addition, despite our being outside, the friendly staff was diligent about checking in and making sure we had everything we needed. Since my companions had been at the table for a bit by the time I had arrived, they already had beverages in front of them, so I needed to catch up. I ordered a house Margarita without specifying a particular brand of tequila. Even with their default spirit, the drink was very strong. It also used their homemade sour mix, which was, thankfully, more sour than it was sweet. Our drinks paired nicely with the complementary, spectacular tortilla chips and zesty salsa. When it came to my meal, I was unsure of what to order, since the reviews had been very mixed, most either being 5-stars or 2-stars with comments about items being "bland". I decided to go with the grilled Chicken Fajitas, which arrived on a standard plate, rather than a sizzling platter. While that was not a great sign, the chicken actually wound up being enjoyable and certainly not bland. Plus, it was not at all greasy, like fajitas can often be. Accompanying the poultry strips on the plate were freshly sauteed onions and green peppers, a mound of seasoned rice, and smoky refried beans, which were all tasty. I typically prefer black beans, which were not an option here, but the refried worked out well. Separately, I received a container of flour tortillas (though I wished they had soft corn ones) and a plate with guacamole, pico de gallo, serrano peppers, lettuce, shredded cheese, and sour cream. I agreed with some other reviewers that the guacamole was more like mashed avocado, as it was very under-seasoned. The pico was also oddly sweet, and the tomatoes were mushy. Despite these minor critiques, I found that the food surpassed my expectations that had been established from other reviews. I've been here twice, once for brunch, another time for dinner. Got the breakfast burrito originally and it was a while ago so I can't speak to it super well but it was good enough for me to come back. The second time, we started off with a Cactus salad which feels like an underrated dish. It was a heaping pile of sauteed cactus and chopped jalapenos over what most would consider a generic salad. But you know what, I enjoyed that touch for the texture . The cactus itself was packed with flavor with nice heat from the jalapenos. For my entree was the chicken fried chicken, a chicken breast cutlet smothered in gravy. This cutlet is what got me to write a review. They basically nailed it with the interior super juicy. It comes with two sides. Aromatic rice and beans and collard greens that accentuated the floral notes of the greens. This may have been a 4 star review but the price to quality ratio and friendly staff is what inspired me to bump it up. Will put this place in my regular rotation. read more

This place is getting 3 stars from me for the margarita which was amazing-I had the lychee flavored one and enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the food. I got the pulled pork burrito which was so bland that even the guacamole (which was pretty good too) wasn't helping it. Basically didn't taste like anything. The chips that came with the guacamole were stale too and appeared to be store bought. Another minus is that this place is cash only-in today's day and age that's a major inconvenience. We came on a Thursday at peak dinner and the upstairs portion was completely empty. The waitress was very attentive and took orders promptly. The Margs were low on the alcohol, but tasted fresh. Please if you want good food, go somewhere else. The nachos came with 6 chips. Literally 6, like my group of 3 each got 2 chips. My pulled pork burrito was dripping a River underneath, it came apart within minutes. And on top of that, this place is cash only with not cash prices. Lobo is a great place to pop into if you have to talk to someone who happens to be in the area. Recently a good friend flew in and was in the area and I wanted to sit and talk to him for a bit. We went and sat at Lobo at the bar. It is cash only. They have modelos and pacificos (on tap). I was told they would take Venmo and they did and I was happy. The guacamole came with salsa (with a slight kick that was great), guac, and a nice sized bucket of chips. The chips were amazing. Just no. I sought out Lobo for an afternoon cocktail and quick bite solely because the previous weekend a table with two large dogs dined in the courtyard. They were certainly not service dogs, as was the excuse for an inconsistent policy in rudely rejecting me with my small pup sleeping in his enclosure. Extremely disappointed with my first (and last ) time visit since 2019. I don't even know where to begin and I'm probably being too generous by giving 1 star. Quite the switch from my previous stellar review. Decided to have brunch here today since I had memorable ones just 3+ years ago when I cited stellar service and abundant food. Everything has changed. The waiter (I think I recognize him from the past) claimed Lobo is under new owner/manager but it doesn't state that online. Browsing the menu, gone was the omelet with 2 added ingredients. They don't honor the Yelp check in for the free guacamole despite it still being live on Yelp. The complimentary basket of chips and salsa was also eliminated. Today's order for 2 were identical: Strawberry Mimosa (I didn't even taste a hint of strawberry) and The Tulsa. We asked for a pico de galllo substitute instead of the lard infused refried beans. The waiter had to think about it but finally agreed. Service was quite poor. Just 2 tables in total dining in. We sat in the patio section which was still pleasant. The Tulsa was 2 eggs any style, cheese grits and a choice of tortilla or toast. My order was customized for eggs over medium and unbuttered whole wheat toast. It looked good at a glance upon arrival, but was mediocre at best. For one thing, the toast had an odd under flavor. Was it the grains or just stale bread? The eggs were good but it's hard to ruin eggs. The eggs sat on the perfect square cheese grits. The orange processed cheese was layered over the grits and overall, the meal was a hot mess. I just don't understand why the Yelp perk couldn't be honored yet exist on the app. The menu changed dramatically as did the service. Comparing to my last time visit, it was awful. With very little effort being put into this restaurant maybe it's time to move on and close down to make room for another restaurant. Having spent plenty of time in Tejas (that's Texas in Spanish, you uncultured buffoon), I am now going to pretend I'm an expert on Tex-Mex cuisine. ___________ I really like Lobo. And when I say that, I mean that I really like a lot of things ABOUT Lobo (and even the things I didn't like initially have grown on me over the years). The first of which is the delicious margaritas (which actually have the effect of making everything else better as well) served by great bartenders, ideally during happy hour. Other great things about Lobo: -The awesome backyard. -The cute, cozy upstairs dining area that I didn't know existed, but now spend too much time in. -Free chips and salsa, which is always nice. -Huge portions. Seriously, huge. How huge? Two regular human beings could easily split the combo plates and be full. Believe me, you will remember The Alamo (one chicken enchilada, one beef burrito topped with tex-mex con carne and a bean and cheese chalupa) because it will still be sitting in your stomach three hours later. I once ate the Carnitas Extravaganza on the recommendation of the waitress (she said to get it if I liked "huge, and pork, and egg," which are three of my favorite things), and it made me realize that if everyone in NYC ate like this all the time, they would start to look like everyone in Houston. The wedge salad, a freaking SALAD, is more than a full meal for a normal human being. It's got more bacon than you'd ever expect, basically a full avocado, and if you add shrimp or chicken to it you're good. Please understand that this is not the best Mexican food you can get in NYC. But it is an insane value that comes with good service and great margaritas, it's the best option before or after a film at Cobble Hill across the street, and it's an excellent foil for the numerous tiny-portioned, expensive options nearby. read more

Stopped in one lunch one Saturday and had a great experience. Our waiter was fantastic and took great care of us. We had margaritas, chips with queso and quac (free with Yelp checkin and amazing entre!), and tacos with rice and beans. The portions were so huge we couldn't finish our plates and had to take to-go boxes. They have seating upstairs and downstairs, there is a huge bar and only a few tables down stairs and the bathroom is located upstairs. We sat at a table by the window downstairs and I really enjoyed the street view. The bar was huge too, I would go back to checkout their happy hour. The theme of the restaurant was both Mexican food and "big Texas plates" that included options like chicken-fried steak, baby back ribs and catfish. This is my go-to restaurant when I don't know where to go or what I want. I came here years ago for a happy hour that turned into a full on night out and my love for Lobo started. Their margarita options is what started my love affair with Lobo. They have a selection of 5-6; I've tried most (the usual players - regular (lime), strawberry, mango, etc etc) but my favorite is the blood orange. My first night there years ago, I think I had about 8 blood orange margaritas so needless to say, they're heckin awesome. There's also a hard iced tea/lemonade drink that's really good too, but you never forget your first love. What confirmed my love affair with Lobo was their food menu and prices. I've had a dish here and there that I wasn't necessarily a fan of (example: taco salad in the shell bowl - not my thing), but 9 times out of 10, I don't want to stop eating even if I'm busting at the seams. Rule #1 of Lobo: ALWAYS order queso to start with your bottomless chips and salsa. Its good queso - none of that jarred bs that turns into a half solid glob of fake cheese - this is warm, liquidy cheese with a bit of a jalapeño bite to it. Rule #2: know when to stop eating their freshly made bottomless chips and heavenly queso bc you'll literally eat yourself to sleep if you're not careful We frequently order the rack of ribs, burritos, and tacos. Any of their taco or burrito options are amazing, I can't even choose a favorite...the RIBS... always tender, fall right off the bone and HUGE. We almost always take it home because it's too much. Our bill for 2 never goes over $80 (queso, 2 entrees, 1-2 drinks each) which is an absolute steal...I'm almost hesitant to post this review to keep this place as under the radar as possible but all you taco/tequila-loving humans should take a trip there to experience it for yourself! Let me just start off with an emoji if I can ... . Now that that's taken care of lol let's get into this review. I stumbled on this place after walking around dwtn Bkln. I happen to arrive mins after they opened their doors to which I was greeted by Fernando. Right off the bat he very welcoming and attentive, he also had some great suggestions on food options for first time diners. I had the hibiscus Margarita and it was soo good, so good that I just had to order 4 more lol . The BBQ wings were "ok" (maybe it was the type of BBQ sauce they used ‍), the garlic wings stole the show! And the chipotle Mac and cheese was amazing! The chicken tacos were great as well (I can only speak for the chicken tacos as I didn't consume the shrimp tacos). We had the lobo platter and the chimichangas. They both lacked in flavor but weren't a total fail. The seasoned taco meat was the highlight of both dishes and at least the pork was tender. That being said, I wish I had stuck to my gut and ordered the classic taco platter instead of the chimichangas. All in all: The service was good with everyone being extremely friendly. Eh, I'm a little disappointed that I was disappointed in this place. Was really craving queso and, after reading some decent reviews, queso was the first thing I saw on their menu. So, my boyfriend and I gave it a try. The queso was good, not mind-blowing good, but good enough. The salsa had a nice bite to it and the chips were fresh. But, I ordered the carne guisada tacos. In a normal case, there's a ton of flavor in this dish, but it was majorly lacking. The meat was good and tender but there was just zero flavor. My boyfriend had the pulled pork burrito and said the same - it just needed more flavor and spice. Went to pay and found out they only accept cash... but they have an ATM upstairs. Of course they do. I get that some places do this, but for a sit down place I expect to see somewhere before ordering that it's cash only. Guess if they told you then they'd lose a lot of business soooo, it is what it is. If you're looking for comforting Tex-Mex food at reasonable prices, Lobo is the place to go. The service is friendly and the food typically comes out quickly. They start by bringing a complimentary basket of chips and salsa (and the salsa is delicious, has just the right amount of kick), but I try not to fill up on those so I can enjoy my go-to entree, Edwin's enchiladas with chicken and verde sauce. My husband gets the same dish but with mole sauce. To sweeten the deal, they have Happy Hour margaritas on week nights until 7pm. Note: While Lobo used to have two locations, one in Cobble Hill and one in Park Slope, the latter closed earlier this year. The remaining location (which we always preferred atmosphere-wise) is two floors -- there's a full bar and small dining area (maybe 4 tables) on the first floor and a larger dining area on the second floor. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I get the feeling that some people who have reviewed this place haven't eaten a ton of actual Tex-Mex. Me and the hubs moved here recently from Austin and the dearth of Tex-Mex has been a sadness to us. Yes, Mexican food is thick on the ground, but Tex-Mex is a different thing. You use different spices and meats. It's just not the same thing. (Don't misunderstand. There's much about the NYC food life that we're super happy about. Just not this one tiny thing.) Lobo has real queso. Maudie's recipe queso, if that means anything to anyone. What it means to me is that I don't have to make my own damn queso anymore. We got enchilada plates, which should be the test of any new Tex-Mex place. I got shrimp with rachero sauce, he got chicken with verde. The ranchero sauce was bueno, the verde sauce was as well. The ice tea was perfect, the chips and salsa were gratis - and yummy - as they should be. At first glance, the salsa was not as chunky as I like, but it had both a sweetness and enough heat to carry the day. The table also has red and green Cholula if you want more. Yes it's a cash only establishment, but I really don't understand the complaints. It feels like more and more places are cash only these days. It's annoying, but it is what it is. Can't say enough good things about this place; there really aren't any other good Tex-Mex places in Brooklyn (this end of Brooklyn, at least). The place is very spacious (second floor is huge and there's an outdoor garden), the margaritas are delicious, and the food always comes out in huge portions -- a welcome relief given that surrounding restaurants charge the same price but give you half the portion. I usually come in towards the end of the week and hang out at the bar which is really an excellent centerpiece when you walk in: a great, big wooden bar with the Texas longhorn hanging in the middle of it. They have only one TV in the place (at the end of the bar) as far as I know, but the bartenders are nice enough to put on any game you want, so that's a big plus. It's just a friendly, welcoming place. I don't know if some of these reviewers are paid by neighboring restaurants to write dour reviews about this place or if those other reviewers just wanted to test their creative writing skills (I think there are writing studios for that!), but I can't think of a single downside to this place . . . one reviewer said that they were disappointed that the cash-only mandate wasn't stated more specifically upfront, and, on that one point, I can commiserate; I was a bit surprised when I first learned that, as well. I should have known not to order food when the chips came out cold with canned salsa. As a Texan now living in Brooklyn, I am mortified that this food is labeled Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex doesn't mean poor quality Mexican food. The enchiladas were filled with fake processed cheese, with watery reheated chili poured over the top. You could taste that these items had at some point been frozen and reheated because the sauce was separated and diluted. The so-called carnitas was blocky poor quality meat, and the beef inside the beef enchilada was not seasoned. Sides: The rice was overcooked as if reheated in a microwave and the beans were lukewarm and unseasoned.The hard-shelled taco was flavorless ground beef with bits of cut lettuce and tomatoes that I could honestly make better at home myself for a tenth of the price.
