Still, it is super-casual and easy and you pay first and then sit. We got the sweet potato fries, which tasted like sweet potatoes (again! remarkable!) but were rather soggy. The onion rings are more of an onion doughnut - use your imagination. The regular fries are my favorite kind: thin, dark, skins-on (like at Barney's). We spent $20 and it's BYOB. We rolled into Northampton bedraggled and weary from long car trip and a weird smoke alarm experience at the house where we were planning to stay, and we all just wanted some dinner. Local Burger is family-owned, gets most of its produce and organic meat from local farms, and is very reasonably-priced: all good things. They also have several options for the non-meat eater who finds herself or himself in the company of carnivores. Portions for sides like fried pickles, overly-salted (if you ask me) sweet potato (which I hear are amazing) or regular potato fries, gigantic onion rings are HUGE, and cheap. Get a basket and share with friends. Unless you're 250lbs, drunk off your butt, and/or a wrestler and got something to prove. This is the true college kind of place to eat, which is awesome since it's in Noho, and stays open until 3:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. For my partner and I, searching for a nice spot to eat after PRIDE, it was just alright. We're not in college anymore (and couldn't eat like this on a regular basis like the college folk). ;) She had the turkey burger -- which was really decently seasoned, and tasty. It was also very flat. We saw the chef pounding something down with intense vigor, and, as it turns out, it was burgers. ;) I had the veggie burger, and, at the suggestion of the waitstaff, the yummy yogurt-dill-spicy sauce, which really made the veggieburger a kickass (flat) sandwich. The tomato and pickles on the sandwich were so fresh. My only complaint is that they serve Heinz ketchup, and everyone knows that Heinz is more rat (hair) than tomato, so I opted out of that, but other than that, it was a darned good sandwich, and one I'd recommend to vegetarians. They also have the sandwich sans yogurt for the vegan quadrant of the world. Awesome. We were able to find a seat pretty quickly, and really enjoyed our flat burgers and salty fries and onion rings. Other options look good, including the Captain Crunch chicken tenders which sound intriguing... The Upshot? It's trying to be fast good food, but it's not fast. When I read what was nothing short of a rave review of Local Burger and Fries in the Sunday New York Times Travel section, I knew it would only be a matter of days before I tried it out for myself. Today was that day. In a storefront on Main Street, right across the street from FitzWilly's, Local has set up shop and is now dishing out what maybe some of the best burgers in the Pioneer Valley. They're good - and best of all, they're locally sourced and organic. But this isn't the nirvana of burgers and on some fronts, the place falls a bit short. First, the price: A burger, small fries and coke is going to set you back about $11. That's a bit on the pricey side for counter service. The buns are kind of bland and need work but the burgers themselves, very good. The fries are hand cut and good -with the skins still on. I've had better - so have you. I'm the only person I can think of that doesn't get excited about Local Burger...and I LOVE burgers!! It's been a few years since I ate there (I remember not being overly impressed but can't remember the details) but the other day I was craving a perfect cheeseburger but needed to get it on the fly. I thought "YES! THIS is what Local Burger is for!!" and rushed right over. The gal at the register was awesome- nice and helpful. The wait was really long and I couldn't quite figure out why because they weren't slammed and there were a lot of staff in the kitchen. It took about 15 minutes to get my "to go" cheeseburger and fries. The family of 4 people who ordered after me got their food before me so I don't know if they misplaced my order or if it was sitting back there. Then it took me about 5 minutes to get back to the office and I sat down to eat right away. The fries were room temp and soggy, the burger was meh. I've been to Local Burger several times & I always seem to be left wanting. They have a great spot, use good ingredients, have lots of options but it's just never been that good for me. I really like turkey burgers so I always gravitate towards them. I always end up with a unappetizing burger with a weird burnt/charred taste. Just not appetizing. I'm also partial to sweet potato fries but I like them to be fry-like & these seemed more like steamed sweet potato slices. Same thing with the regular fries...they just never seem to get a stand-up fry with some crunch...just sad, limp, oily ones. On the bright side, the fried pickles were excellent! Crunchy, salty, pickle perfection. Didn't even need the dipping sauce. How can you perfectly fry pickle slices but murder fries?? I love the concept, and I like locally-owned establishments. That being said, when I've gone in here I've been disappointed with the food. With "local" in the name, I'd expect them to have meat coming from ten miles away, 100% grass-fed. I'd expect them to have local organic potatoes friend in local oil [possibly the sunflower stuff from Vermont]. But unfortunately, they seem to have been swept up in the greenwashing trend, and don't source a majority of their ingredients locally. Also, I didn't find their food that tasty. So much to choose from, not big enough stomach to fulfill it all. The things I tried so far: The Local Burger - my favorite. wouldn't change it up. it comes with 12oz patty with cheddar & American cheese, bacon, mushroom, onions and red peppers. Portobello burger - I LOVE MuShrooms but I wasn't a total fan about this. If this mushroom came with the patty than it will make it complete. That is why I would just get the local burger that includes mushroom in it. SIDES I tried so far: hand cut fries hand cut sweet potatoes fires beer battered onion rings - eh it's okay...it is HUGE but such a huge portion that not able to finish it. I would recommend sharing. They have a lot of veggie options too, although I tried local burger (with meat). The meat was well done, they are very specific on your choice pink or no pink or well cooked (brown). I have to commend Local Burger for having the best veggie burger I have ever tasted. To be honest, I'm not usually a huge fan of veggie burgers, but since I don't eat meat, I have wound up having to have a fair amount while eating at similar places. Most burger restaurants obviously couldn't care less about how their veggie burger tastes, basically serving a microwaved Boca burger. I get it, vegetarians aren't exactly the niche market for these restaurants, but I still feel like I'm getting the short end of the stick. That's definitely not the case here - what you get is a crispy, warm and flavorful garden burger that totally made me forget how tasteless and stale most of its rivals are. And as an extra bonus for us herbivores, they even have a few veggie burgers to choose from! A point off because for a counter service burger place it's a little pricey and the fries cost extra (seriously, who wants a burger without the fries?) and while they're good, they're also seriously oversalted. One of my favorite things in this world is a good plate of sweet potato fries. So many folks I've talked to have raved about the sweet fries here. I had mildly high expectations and was excited to try them. Man, I'm not sure at all if I just kept hitting it on bad days but the sweet fries were sort of just a mushy, floppy pile of starch and oil. If you had blindfolded me, I wouldn't have been able to tell what kind of potato it was, just tasted like greasy-but-not-in-a-good-fair-good-kind-of-greasy regular fries. I've given it a shot twice and both times couldn't even get through a quarter of the order, so I am letting go of this being the utopia for good sweet fries like so many claim. The Burgers, though, yes, definitely go for it. I have had two different burgers that were tasty. It does get crowded, though, so pick an off time or steel yourself to be jostled or wait a long time. read more

The meat is always well-done, and has decent texture although it is pretty tasteless. Definitely not comparable to Shake Shack. This place is a lively burger joint where you order at a counter. You seat yourself. No waiter service. Their regular burger is black angus and cost $5.59. Grass fed burger is $6.59. They list their meat source, which is nice, so you know where the meat is coming from. They have a local source listed, hence the name of the business "Local". You can get a decent meal with fries and a drink for slightly over $10. You'll pay more for upping your meat quality of course. I opted to get the grass fed burger and everything about it was terrific. Both burger and french fries. I thought the burger was better than a Shake Shack burger of NYC fame. Plus, I was happy to get unlimited refills of Gold Peak unsweetened Iced tea. God I love that stuff. The only downside to this place is that it gets so gosh darn crowded it's difficult to find an open table. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I saw the kitchen crew unwrapping some type of prepackaged patties. I think it was the burger patties. That might explain why my burger didn't crumble apart like handmade burgers usually do. At first I was disappointed to see that, but considering the price of the burger, I'm OK with it. The price of the burgers would probably be more if the meat were hand ground and formed in-house. $6 for a good quality 6 oz burger is pretty fair, albeit they come from a prepackaged patty. By the way, if you think a good burger can't come from a prepackaged patty, try a Bubba Burger from your local supermarket's frozen foods aisle. They'll likely change your perception of prepackaged hamburger patties. Note: What's über cool about Main Street in Northampton is that there's no McDonalds or anything like that polluting the sidewalks. If there were, mom and pop burger places like this one would probably have a hard time surviving. So kudos to the Northampton town planning committee for making the downtown area a nice and desirable place to spend an afternoon. Most towns of this size lost their business focus when they allowed their businesses to move to the suburbs. Downtown Northampton is bustling with so many people it actually looks like a throwback to the 1950's when downtown centers were considered the life blood of many towns. The good news is that the burgers are pretty good - the bad news is that the rest of the experience isn't up to par. My first experience at Local Burger was not very good. My friend and I wandered in on a fairly busy Sunday afternoon. There were several empty tables but other diners had taken the chairs to their tables. Maybe they should keep extra chairs in the back for that reason because we just had to stand there looking like dweebs. I ordered the Portobello Burger and that was my mistake. Dank burgers. The option for local beef is great, they are particularly delicious. Also, the fried chicken mixed with cornflake batter is shockingly delicious. Their fries are rather lackluster, and extremely inconsistent. Not as crispy as they should be, usually too salty, and often too oily. I always pass on getting fries here for this reason. The burger alone with all the fixings is really all you need son. Can get pretty busy on weekends. Awesome place because its BYOB and open pretty late. Do yourself a favor, head over to Pop's, get some dranks, get the window seat and that fresh open air, and eat enough to stay there for a while. Local Burger is one of the few restaurants that has never let my wife and I down. We've eaten there at least 12 times in the last six months. The very act of walking in makes us happy. The Westhampton Burger is by far the best burger I've ever eaten an we love the fried pickles. There are a few things I wish were different though. First, I wish they would add chicken tenders to the kids menu. It's a kids menu staple that is noticeably absent. We were looking for something quick & easy for dinner since my daughter had to meet her friends in about an hour, so she suggested we go to Local Burger which she liked the first time she went with a friend. I ordered the "Local Burger" (well-done please!) and small fries to share with my husband while my daughters got a hotdog with chili and hotdog with sauerkraut. By the time we finished placing our orders, tables opened up for us so we decided to just eat in. We waited maybe about 10 mins or so & our food was brought over to where we were sitting. The burger that I ordered at first glance seemed stacked up high. Upon closer inspection, it was indeed high since it had 2 burger patties, with sliced tomatoes, lettuce, mushrooms, peppers & bacon (several of them) on buns so full with sesame seeds. My husband & I shared this and both loved it. The burger was cooked just to my liking. The fries was also great especially the flavor. Even though I ordered just small the basket of fries was enough to feed the four of us. I didn't try the dogs even when my daughters asks me to but they also agreed that they were good. Counter guy taking orders was friendly and patient. Service is fast & efficient and I assume that on busy times, service can take some time. All in all, Local Burger is a no frills burger joint but makes up for it in great food. I know some yelpers didn't like it that it is a bit pricey but for me, price is a small thing to pay for great food. We discovered Local Burger entirely by surprise while walking off our ice cream coma from Herrell's. The smell of charbroiled meat seemed the perfect antidote, and we stopped in to split a burger and fries. The angus (I think it was angus?) burger was excellent, very pink and juicy and fresh, enough so that the mister went back for seconds. The fries were burningly hot and perfectly cooked, crisp on the outside, creamy on the outside, and the sign said they were from Amherst, which is definitely living up to the name. The only drawback was that even though the windows were open, it was extremely stuffy and there were a number of flies buzzing around the little raised stage area at the front. The onion rings were massive and though yelpers seem to be wowed by that, I think it does an onion ring a disservice.
