Don't let the decor keep you from experiencing a little piece of burger heaven. It is crowded and you will have to stake out a place to sit but it is worth it. The burgers and the fries are way above average. If ground beef is your thing and you are in the area I would strongly recommend the Local. I love this place in theory, but in execution it just didn't live up to the hype. First - and maybe this isn't typical - upon walking in the restaurant was pretty dirty. Tables hadn't been wiped down or dishes cleared, and there was litter on the floor. The number of fruit flies on the window next to my table was alarming, too. It just didn't feel like a clean place to eat, and maybe that set the tone for the meal. Second, the burger itself was just...ok. I've honestly had better at Wendy's. The bun and patty were both greasy, and the meat wasn't very flavorful. The french fries were soggy. I typically trust a cook/chef to season the food properly, but this burger had me reaching for the salt shaker after only a bite. The price for our meal and the service were great - the service was actually pretty exceptional, very friendly and attentive. I also suspect the homeless man sitting next to me showing a stranger his urine sample for his upcoming drug test might have colored my reaction to my meal, but in any case I'll be waiting awhile before giving LB another try. read more

This place used to be good. Quality has nose dived tho, and is highly variable for such a simple offering. It's clear they have some line cooks who really don't give a sh*t. Five Guys has better burgers and fries for a similar price point. If Local Burger could hire people who care about the food they are making it would go a long way. This place has a no-frills, old school diner feel to it but not a bad burger joint to have on your roster - especially in the late-night/wee hours of the morning. I came here for lunch in the afternoon. The place wasn't too busy and the cashier was pretty friendly. I had the grass-fed burger, cooked medium with fries. It came out in under 10 minutes. Very delicious burger, flavorful & cooked properly. The bun is a standard burger bun, nothing great there but the star is the meat and it shines through as well as it should. so i drive by this place everytime i head out to northampton, so tonight my friends and I stopped in. We read here on yelp that the westhampton burger, which had bacon, ranch dressing, bbq sauce and cheese and the additional lettuce, tomato and onions. Unfortunately, Local Burger is a victim of its own success. It's far too small. There are usually lines, and forget getting a seat. The food can take a long time when they are hopping, and often you won't get your fries at the same time as your burger. It's not too bad at lunch, but dinnertime? Yikes. The Juicy Lucy is 12 oz. of beef with American cheese stuffed inside, and is probably the best thing to eat in the Pioneer Valley. The wait time is longer, and you should let it rest for awhile to let the cheese come back together a bit, but it really is divine. The onion rings are some of the best I've had as well. Very good burger which was not at all dry like some other burgers I've had. Just the right size as well-- I'm not a huge eater and I often have trouble finishing burgers at restaurants, but this one got me just the right amount of full. I'm not really sure what "grass-fed" is supposed to taste like, but the meat did taste tenderer and juicier than in other burgers. The fries were also quite good-- not too oily and greasy. First I gotta say I have plenty of fond memories of meeting friends at Local Burger but this will be the last time I take my chances here. Unsanitary in two categories - 1) The bathroom faucets do not work. Standing in front of an employee with soap on my hands, I was told "Oh yeah, we know, the faucets don't work. I have to use the kitchen faucet to wash my hands." And what about me? Customers eating burgers and fries - with their hands - can't even wash their hands either before or after they eat, or even after they use the bathroom at this place. If you know it's broken, put an OUT OF ORDER sign on the door, or perhaps fix the issue. The prices are high enough where you should be able to afford a plumber, if not that's a serious cause for concern with other areas at a business like this. 2) The ketchup was rancid, stinking like beer. It was left out on the patio for customers to use, this was very early in the morning when they had just opened and about 73 degrees out, so it must have been rancid from a previous day. I brought it inside and showed it to an employee who said, "Yeah, I know." This is absolutely gross and pretty ridiculous given the prices. Surely food inspection and sanitation should be the highest priority. I lost my appetite for this place after this. read more

My wife and I visited Northampton for the first time today and we went to Local Burger & Fries because we heard it is excellent...we heard correctly! I had the grass fed burger and the taste and quality of the meat were superb. It tasted like it was grilled to perfection! My wife had the Northampton Veggie Burger and added some roasted red peppers. The veggie burger was crispy, fresh, and delicious. The hand-cut fries (made from local potatoes) were perfect and not greasy at all! We even returned later in the day to purchase a pumpkin milkshake, which was AWESOME! Our only complaint is that it took a long time to get our food, and later, even our milkshake. On the positve side, the fact that the food takes a while shows that it is cooked to order (you can see into the kitchen), so we appreciate the freshness of the food. It was family weekend at Smith, so the place was packed, but maybe they could've had some extra help on to make things a little more organized and faster? One thing is apparent: These guys love what they do and they work hard, and they are very friendly. Aside from nearly eating my own hand out of hunger while waiting for my burger and fries, I do not have any real complaints. If you're really just looking for a good burger with some interesting options, good Americana sides (fries, fried pickles, cole slaw, etc), then Local Burger is the place to be. I live on main street and love nothing more every once in a while to go later in the evening and get a hot dog, throw some cole slaw ontop (don't knock it till you try it!) and split a basket of fries with some friends. It's good, they care about their ingredients, and it's simple. They have pretty tasty shakes as well and it's BYOB! What more could you want? The ONLY negative thing I could say about LB is that you shouldn't expect to order, get your burger in 5 min and then go. Havent had a burger in the valley that compares. The counter person and the guy that runs food normally have great attitudes, too. Prices are a little steep- about $10 for a burger when all is said and done. The only reason I didnt opt for 5 stars is the wait. The last time I was in there a row of people sat at the bar/counter and they were all able to order while sitting down even though there was a line of people that were waiting and ready to order. I had the Farmhouse Turkey Burger (cheddar, bacon and maple mayo) for $6.99 and my friend had the Westhampton Burger (bacon, cheddar BBQ sauce, and Ranch dressing), also $6.99. We shared a basket of Hand-cut Sweet Potato Fries- with maple mayo. My burger was perfect, as was my friend's. The sweet potato fries were good (the maple mayo? Even better.) The only downside to our meal was that I got a teeny-tiny cup for water. I have a bit of a pet-peeve about people trying to give you a miniature cup just because you've asked for tap water. If you want fries, you add them to your order for a small additional cost. - Open late: Open when bars let out on most nights, can make for a fun place to hang out and enjoy some food before trekking home. Cons: - I agree with Leo K. that the ordering is a little chaotic, but not really anything that has ever been a huge problem for me. *One thing to note is that you cannot BYOB after a certain hour. Yes, the grass-fed beef burger is somewhat smaller than I would find preferable. But I have never found the service at Local Burger less than exemplary, and this is really one of the best burger joints in the country. Even The New York Times saw fit to give it a positive review a few years ago. This is a place that cares about quality, and offers you options that reflect that. The chefs are from professional kitchens, and simply decided to move to a smaller city with a different pace. You can choose a burger made from Brimfield grass-fed beef, or one that's from a more traditional source, and either will taste wonderful. The sweet potato fries are outstanding, and the onion rings are excellent. If you happen to be in the Pioneer Valley, check out this place post-haste. Local is one of my favorite restaurants in Northampton. It's kind of like the go-to place for the all-American experience--amazing burgers, hand-cut fries, fried pickles, and my favorite special, fried mac-n-cheese bites. I don't think I've ever gotten anything here I didn't like. If you're not afraid of the calories you're already wracking up, you can add a milkshake. Delicious. The atmosphere is fun, the people who work there have always been nice, and it's BYOB. (They WILL card you, obviously, so don't try anything stupid if you're underage.) If you're over 21, I'm not sure there is anything better than sitting by the open windows on a sunny day with a cold beer and burger at Local Burger.
