We had Joseph out to our new house to repair a broken door handle, to replace three locks, and to…read morechange out two handsets. (I found Tivoli through a paid advertisement for Tivoli locksmiths on Cleveland Park listserv.) Upon examining the doors, he said that he was unable to change out the handsets because to do so would require drilling, and he considered that beyond his expertise. He also said that he was unable to replace the locks on the existing handsets, but he was able to make new keys. I thought it was very disappointing that someone who claimed to have 33 years of experience was unable to change a lock - and I should have followed my instincts and asked him to leave. When I went to lock the doors I found that Joseph had not repaired the broken door handle on my old french doors. The handle was loose and still hanging brokenly at an odd angle, and when lifted it would flop brokenly and not engage the locking mechanism. As a result, the door could not lock. When I called Joseph to point out that he must not have tested the keys and that he had left me with a broken door handle that would not lock, he screamed at me, saying that he left everything perfectly, and that I must be stupid and confused and clearly didn't know what I was talking about. He screamed at me for 10 minutes as I tried to persuade him to at least let me send him a video so I could prove that I knew how to use the door and that the handle was actually broken. He refused to listen to me and he refused to look at the video. I tried to reason with him, but could not get a word in with his shouting at me. I have never had such a bad and abusive experience with a contractor. This person is incompetent and treats his customers horribly. I am shocked that he remains in business. UPDATE. The locksmith came back to my house later that evening, and fortunately my husband opened the door (I would probably have called the police ). Husband took Joseph outside, where he was shocked to discover that the door handle he'd worked on was indeed completely busted. At that point he apologized to my husband for his rudeness to me over the phone, refunded our money, and promised to repair the door handle. He's come back to the house a couple of times since, but he has been unable to repair the lock. I do give him credit for apologizing and trying to make the situation right. I am raising this review to 3 stars just for that. UPDATE. Joseph came back a couple of times, but was unable to repair the old lock and eventually just stopped coming. In the meantime, my general contractor was able to install the new electronic locks on my old doors. It took a couple of hours in total and it was not at all necessary to buy new doors, as Joseph had insisted.

Initially we had planned to get the doors re-keyed, but decided after speaking to him about price that it would be better (given the condition of the locks) to get new locks placed. Within an hour and a half he was able to do all three doors (knobs and deadbolts), leave us with plenty of keys, and even showed us how to rekey our locks should we loose a key. My review did not reflect that as well as I wanted it to show. That said, after speaking with the technician, they are reducing some of the installation cost and replacing the deadbolt with a thinner profile at no extra charge. I should have called them first, instead of venting online. Thus the reason I don't like the ability to write quick reviews. I would definitely reccomend this company to you for your locksmith needs. Just be sure to confirm the cost before agreeing to the work so that you are not surprised. Again, the technician was professional, kind, and easy to work with. His work was done well and we are happy with the functionality and quality of the locks. I really appreciated the fact that he took time to listen to my concerns and offer good advice without trying to upsale me to more expensive locks than I needed. Again, after calling them and talking through my frustrations at the total cost, they showed kindness and concern when they could have blown me off and not cared. Throughout the process, they repeatedly asked me if I was sure and insisted their way was the only option. In hindsight, it felt less like concern and more like a way to protect themselves so they could later say I gave permission. As a client, I am not the expert, which is why I hired a professional. That approach came across as intimidation rather than guidance. When it became clear the project could not be completed, I was still charged the full price. When I raised my concern, the response was dismissive and delivered in a raised tone of voice. As a young woman alone in that situation, I felt intimidated and taken advantage of. They knew the job had not been completed successfully, yet I was still required to pay in full, which made the experience feel unfair and exploitative.
