At half past 10p on a Monday night, there is nothing more annoying than a busted deadbolt that you cannot open when leftover Smith & Wollensky is in one hand and workout clothes in the other. I had been waiting for the day/night when my MacGyver skills would fail, or more accurately, the poor install would crumble. The cylinder could almost be pulled out and key parts of the cylinder had fallen. Applying pressure or shifting the key itself would not matter. I called the first listing populated by Yelp and gleefully saw that Lockbusters operated beyond 6p. Really? Who gets home by 6p in this working world. The dispatcher took details of the situation on the phone and promised the repair man would be there in 30 minutes. Not two minutes later, the aforementioned repair man called to say he was 17 minutes away. 20 minutes passed and he was parked across my street. He deftly applied another method to the lock when a simpler version failed. Once the main parts were removed, the replacement deadbolt took a mere 2 minutes. I tested the two keys, and he wrote a receipt. Cash or charge is acceptable. Discover is even OK, which is rare in NYC. The fee for lock removal is $79 and lock replacement is another $79. $158 plus tax. I am getting reimbursed, so his timeliness and jovial customer service was much appreciated as I wanted to sleep more than anything. I highly recommend this company, and for midnight headaches, it is worth the cost. Quick and friendly service trumps cheap every time. read more

Jay had helped my wife and I install a new door lock in our home about 2 years ago in queens. He is super professional and made the process very painless. i needed a deadbolt installed on my door and Jay was very helpful in choosing the right one for me without pressuring me towards the more expensive options. I made an appointment to have it installed that day but a couple hours after the agreed upon time I called to find out what had happened. What can I say, got locked out my apartment. I rang the number on the door, but they charged 40$ just to come for a look and tell me what the final price would be (later heard from my flatmate that it had cost somewhere in the region of 300 when it happened to her). Did a quick search online, saw the good reviews and gave Jay a call. He said he could make it in two-hours, but within half an hour called back to say he could be there in 5 minutes. Turning my key upon returning home, the cylinder surrounding the key popped out. Pins went flying everywhere. My jaw dropped--locks aren't supposed to just break! But within five minutes, I'd regained my composure well enough to do a quick search on Yelp. Lockbusters came out at the top of my list, so I called and spoke to possibly the most pleasant professional ever. Our locksmith was out in Brooklyn at the time, but he set an appointment for a few hours later and even showed up a few minutes early. He was visibly competent and worked fast, all while keeping up a friendly conversation and explaining what he was doing. Even though it turned out we needed to replace the whole lock, the total price was still well within reach. He even accepted our credit card via an app on his iPhone. Highly recommended. read more

I am baffled after reading the reviews here. I called received outstanding immediate polite service and was told who wound be calling me. ?John arrived on time with car with another locksmith company name and phone on it and did not have the necessary tools to change the lock,. He went down to the car 3 times to get more tools. He was fiddling with the lock for a while and trying to use a standard screw driver which I knew wouldn't work because I have tightened this allen screw many times. I finally said something and he asked me if I had the right sized allen wrench. Well I do, but I definitely had the wrong locksmith. We aborted the mission. read more

I found these guys on Yelp, and I'm happy to give another great review here. I'm horrible - I forget our locksmith's name -- but he was Awesome. He was really friendly, didn't try and sell us anything we didn't really need, and was just efficient and skilled with all the lock stuff. He took off the mangled mess of a lock our landlord left us with, and the ass-backwards bar that went with it, hooked us up with solid and safe new locks, as well as talked to us a lot about our window-gate (what we need, how horrible ours was, etc. - and it Is horrible). We still have to talk to our landlord about that gate, but if he doesn't take care of it we're definitely having Lockbusters (or their other name) fix it. Thank you guys!!! read more

I was blown away but the level of customer service I received from Lockbusters. Not only did Jay call me within an hour to set up a time, he called again later to see if I wanted him to come earlier (I had asked for instillation as early as possible that day but he was booked until 3). I just moved to a new place and I noticed that previous tenant had been coming back to get his mail. So I figured why not change the mailbox lock and also get the locks to my door re-keyed. The mailbox lock was easy to swap out by myself. But for the re-keying I needed a pro. I checked Yelp and the only one I found around me with reputable ratings was Lockbusters. They're based in the east village but they do service my area in Brooklyn. I called in the morning while waiting for cable guy (who was late as expected) and sure enough they had availability for late afternoon and gave me a fixed price for the job. Jay said he could be there around 5:30 or 6. Fine by me. I get a call from Jay at 4:30 saying he can make it even earlier. Great!!! He shows up at 4:45. The work was quick despite problems with my fancy Omnia locks. He gets the job done and I'm good to go. He even grinded the deadbolt hole to make the lock easier to turn. Here's why i just sent Lockbusters' contact info to everyone i know: - CLEAR, FLAT RATES ($89 to pick the lock, and another $89 to replace it if it can't be picked)-- NO MONKEY BUSINESS - CHEAPEST LOCKSMITH IN MANHATTAN (on weekends, anyway) - FAST SERVICE - COURTEOUS AND KNOWLEDGEABLE PHONE SUPPORT I locked myself out of my apartment at around 5 pm on a Saturday. I called around 15 local locksmiths, nearly all of whom refused to quote me a price up front. Considering all the variables at play (Could the lock be picked or would it need to be drilled? How long would it take to pick the lock? If it had to be drilled, how much would the proper replacement shaft cost?), I was facing unspecified fees of up to $250. This worried me, especially since, in the past, I've had a number of in-home technicians raise their fees once they see that I live in a luxury building. Plus, this seemed to be a particularly tough job--the building's handyman informed me that these locks were unpickable. I chose Lockbusters after speaking to its owner, Jay Sofer. He took about 30 minutes in two separate conversations answering ALL of my questions about potential price outcomes and replacement issues-- he was patient and thorough in his responses. Unlike most other locksmiths I spoke to, Jay offers CLEAR and FLAT prices for a visit: $89 to pick a lock, and, if necessary, another $89 to replace the lock shaft. He even promised that, if need be, he could upgrade my new lockshaft to match my door's fixtures after the weekend (when the special order lock shaft came in) at no additional cost. After initially setting an appointment for 10-11 pm, Jay called me with a cancellation for 7.30. Now i wouldn't have to kill my Saturday night waiting to get into my apartment. Jay arrived on time. I was ready to camp out in the hallway and watch the 30- to 40-minute ordeal unfold when, sure enough, Jay picked the lock in 45 SECONDS FLAT. I couldn't believe my eyes. Jay could've taken advantage of the situation by claiming the lock was unpickable, replacing the lockshaft, and charging me the full $178 replacement fee-- which is still on par with the price that most other locksmiths charge JUST TO PICK A LOCK on the weekends-- but he didn't. I paid my $89 fee (plus tax) and he was out of there about 10 minutes after arriving. So: CHEAP, FAST, and HONEST- that's everything you need in a locksmith. Lockbusters is OFF THE HOOK! read more
