After my tour at the Duke Lemur Center, it was recommended that I stop at Locopops before heading home. A free parking lot is available on the side of the business. There is a large backyard area if you are looking to stay a while and eat your treats. There are also many seating areas on the porch. When you arrive, the available flavors are on the chalkboard menu. I then told the employee at the counter what I wanted, and he even put them in a Ziploc baggie for me to take home. They made the drive okay, even though it took longer than usual, because a big truck decided to go 35mph on a 55mph road. I went with Mexican chocolate, lavender cream, watermelon, ginger limeade and orange mango. They were as delicious as I remembered. I also left with an item from the bakery. I enjoyed every bite of that, too. The Mexican-style popsicles are what Locopops is known for, but they also have ice cream. The locopops come in regular and mini sizes. They offer both dairy and non-dairy flavors. I didn't see the pints of ice cream until I was on my way out, or I would have picked one up too. I think this was my first time visiting LocoPops in person actually... it was cute! While best known for their paletas, they also have ice cream. I got two seasonal flavors: strawberry matcha and blueberry mascarpone, both of which were delicious. Wow! I can't believe it was our first time here because they are truly something special. We got a Cherry Lime and a Pineapple Jalapeño paleta which were both amazing with tons of flavor. There are so many seatings areas to choose from. There is a small area inside, a covered patio with rocking chairs, and a backyard with umbrella covered picnic tables and plenty of grass space. We saw people on a picnic date and kids running around just such a fun space. The shopping areas inside really surprised us. There was so many local goodies to look at. The pre made meals looked really nice. Lots of jar goods like jams and sauces. They also had books, puzzles, stickers, shirts, a huge selection of greeting cards, and more. There is also a wine and beer section but what stood out to me was the selection of non alcoholic options and CBD/THC beverages. It's a smaller selection of course but still good considering there is not a ton of places to buy them around here. The service was also great. They are hiring right now and seem understaffed but the young man who helped us was so very kind and helpful and we didn't wait long for our shake at all. I ordered a couple bottles of wine (discoteca by Holiday) for pickup here because I couldn't find them local and saw them listed on their website. Online order was a breeze and once I realized it was a dessert shop with some souvenir-ish merchandise, I was excited to pick up the bottles. I swung by on Tuesday around noon and it was not very busy at all. I perused the dessert section and ended up getting a small cup of the chocolate peppermint soft serve. My Cookies & Cream pop was excellent. Five stars. It had an entire Oreo (or Oreo-like) sandwich cookie in it. I was impressed. I love Oreos and this was even better than Oreos. The parking lot for this place was busy, but a much larger free lot with no apparent reason not to use it was across the street. Once inside, however, I was impressed with how quickly and efficiently business was done. They had dairy and non-dairy popsicles aplenty, but I went for ice cream, trying both a vegan chocolate brownie and a mint chip. I was kind of nonplussed with a portion size that allowed both of those to fit in a cup with a lid. The vegan flavor was definitely on the higher end of non-dairy ice creams I've tried. The first bite carried a few ice crystals but after that it was smooth and, well, creamy, with a rich flavor. The mint chip had some spearmint in it and I could see they were going for something a bit different but it didn't quite work for me. It wasn't strong enough, aromatic enough, the chips weren't plentiful enough. It just needed more. So if anything I think the vegan flavor was actually better (which was good since the amount of it in the cup was roughly 2/3 chocolate brownie to 1/3 mint). I didn't want to take a bunch of popsicles (though they will sell you a cooler if you want to transport them), but the ice cream would certainly merit a return. If you go to Duke Gardens (highly recommend!), and walk to the amphitheater area where the rows of tulips and a pavilion are, to the right of the gardens is Terrace Cafe which is open seasonally from April to November. Inside, they sell various snacks and also Locopops. They have a good selection of half with dairy and half without. At the recommendation of the registrar there, I got Mexican Chocolate which has dairy for $4. I found out later I could've walked 26 minutes (or driven 3 minutes) and got the same ice cream pop at Locopops for $3. Well, because I liked Mexican Chocolate ice cream pop (nice and creamy with a cinnamon taste), I did walk over. There were two paths to get there, and I took the one that went through campus and the hospital, and liked seeing a bit more of Duke Campus that way. There's also a few restaurants along the walk as well. Locopops is next to two cafes, one that does bubble tea and another tea and coffee. If you want something sweet, you'll definitely have your pick. The exterior of Locopops kind of looks like a regular house. It has a small porch area and part of it has been converted to a seating area. There's just a few chairs on the porch (rocking chairs? Swing?), which seem like the best ones, and a lot more lawn chairs in the back area which you get to by walking around the store and through the parking lot. You'll find a medium sized lawn with brightly colored chairs. The interior is one part pantry items and one part ice cream parlor. The pantry part sells locally made bread, artisan chocolate (with artisan prices), colorful pasta, drink mix liquor, soaps and balms, spices and some alcoholic beverages. It's a well stocked shop, with unique brands. The white paneled walls give a country store feel. Some items are pricy, but seem unique. And thankfully the prices were also all online so I knew what to expect. I also appreciated the price stickers on each item, and a small clearance section. I would probably shop here for Whole Foods alternative items, if I was looking for Italian or Mexican specialty items too. And some Jewish bread too! The ice cream parlor was a bit empty. When you go to an ice cream place you expect to see more ice cream. What confused me was that some of it was behind the counter where I couldn't see it. Maybe a covid measure, I don't know, as perhaps they don't want people to handle the ice cream pops as they are wrapped but with an open end. Different from the Duke Gardens location which had a full seal. But anyway, I ordered from the blackboard, and got Lemon Curd from the recommendations here. Also a dairy option, like Mexican Chocolate. I think the flavor was sweet and tangy, and a tad mild. I was expecting more lemon, but got the lemon plus cream flavor. If you like fresh but not powerful lemon, perhaps this is the flavor for you. I was tempted to go for another pop, and could have, as the pops are medium but not large or extra large sized. While the shop sells "baby pops" for kids, i think most would find the regular size kid friendly. Perhaps baby pops would work for the very young (toddler or the sugar sensitive). I thought the $3 price was decent though and as I appreciate craft ice cream, I didn't mind the little lesser size of the ice cream pop. And about flavors, there were some unique flavors on the main blackboard menu, but not too crazy. I actually would've preferred crazier flavors. I wish I saw the special flavors that were taped to the counter where the cash register was, which had some more interesting flavors on the "guest list" which I would've been interested in. Overall, my impression is Locopops is a good mix of nicely priced main items (ice cream and fruit ice pops) and more upscale specialty items, with a good website that reflects accurate prices as well as item availability. The Locopops website also has a lot more info on the items and the makers so I recommend it. I think the shop could use a little more help with signage, pointing to the special flavors as well as the extra seating area. Bonus points for the spacious family style restroom (one toilet only) with the nice changing table for infants. It had a refreshing sweet mango flavor with a bit of tartness, and the little bit of chili (already incorporated inside, as opposed to sprinkled on the outside) gave it a nice kick. Because one is just not enough, I also had the java chip. It was like iced coffee on a stick. Creamy, but not overly so. Strong coffee flavor, but not enough to give you jitters. It was just perfect. I go crazy for all their fruity flavors and for only $2.50 a pop, you really can't go wrong. {You can purchase kid-sized pops for $1.50 and they are in the process of starting a gelato feature at the shop--prices TBD}. Things you should know: the location is walking distance from Ninth Street, so if you're touring Durham and end up on Ninth Street, walk to this shop! Guest Star and Special pops change months. I both love and hate this feature because (1) some of my favorite pops have been the guest pops {guava grapefruit and passionfruit!!} but I also would die if I was never able to try those pops. I personally love the fruit pops over the cream pops, but to each his or her own. The mojito is excellent as well, but now they've added coconut to it, I cannot yet vouch for it! Locopops is definitely worth a try. I've been a couple times and each time I was pleased. I will say that even though they are good, the price is a little high for a popsicle. The only reason why I'm willing to pay the price is because of the unique flavor options. My favorite bar is strawberries and cream. The texture is creamy and the flavor is of the strawberry isn't too much. In my opinion, sometimes strawberry popsicles can have a metallic taste and I was so happy when I tried this one and I didn't get that metal taste. The flavors that I've had have been good and I haven't regretted the purchase. I will agree with a previous review and say that my popsicles haven't been spectacular, just good enough that I keep coming back and trying new flavors. The location is very cute. They bought a house and turned it into a shop. The inside isn't very large but it's not small enough to feel cramped. They have cute little spots for kids. There is a play kitchen as well as a bookshelf full of books. A piano is also inside one of the rooms. The parking lot is on the smaller side, however, parking has never been an issue for me. The parking lot is behind the building, and only one side is paved. This could be an issue for people who need handicapped parking. The only other solution would be to drop them off at the street. There is a small incline to walk up from the parking lot into the building. Make sure you take the paved route, especially after it's rained. A lady that works there said that they are working on installing a ramp they are just waiting on approval from the city. read more

I tried their seasonal pumpkin spice popsicle and it was delicious! My mom got the apple pie, which had chunks of graham cracker in it and my husband got the cookies and cream flavor with big chunks of Oreo in it. Healthy? Probably not. Delicious? Yes!!! For $3 a pop, they are nice little treats to try. UPDATE: I ventured to their new brick and mortar and it's awesome!! It is a spacious house.
