Maybe it's the elitest feel or the underwhelming foilage but it frustrates me that on a day where it's going to be 100 degrees you have to wait for a maintenance person to open the gate, then they want you to sign in and out but mostly that there are signs only after you get inside the area that say no dogs allowed. It's hard enough to find a place to take your pups as it is. You would think a fancy neighborhood trail would be more friendly to those with pets. It must be nice to live in an expensive area that's so exclusive it has it's own nature trail that is only open a few hours a day, a few weekends a month, a few months out of the year. What's the point? Cities should be putting more resources into inclusive places for our community.

It's interesting to do and we have walked through many times. Just as enjoyable, though, are the nature areas just before the hatchery and the river access. We like to come here to enjoy the sounds of the water and take short walks with our dog. It's really a lovely place to stop for an hour or two and just enjoy the peace and quiet. The trails are very short but they do have picnic tables and we have enjoyed a nice lunch here by the lake as well. I think a more fitting name would be the Mokelumne Fish Hatchery and nature area because we happened upon this location by chance but I am so glad we did. We probably make the drive here 3-5 times a year and it is definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

Madi was just as wonderful--both of them really set the tone for a great camping trip. Thank you both for making my visit such a positive experience. My family has been camping at Lake Camanche every year for the past 12 years. What started with…read morebabies, including one who was only 3 months old, has become a cherished family tradition. We typically camp with 40-55 family members, reserving multiple campsites and group sites to accommodate everyone. Many of our children have literally grown up camping here, and this annual trip has always been something our entire family looks forward to. This year, our group included nearly 60 people of all ages. We reserved multiple campsites and a group site, stayed within the occupancy limits, and paid for additional vehicle parking. We expected another fun weekend together, but instead it became one of the worst camping experiences we've ever had. On the first morning, we made a mistake. We woke up too early while preparing breakfast, and our music was too loud. A ranger responded to a complaint, and we immediately apologized, accepted responsibility, and made sure it would not happen again. Unfortunately, after that interaction, it felt like we were under constant scrutiny. Rangers repeatedly drove past our campsites, slowed down to watch us, and frequently stopped to tell us we were too loud even during daytime hours when quiet hours were not in effect. We were not throwing a wild party, we were simply spending time together as a large family. We lowered the music whenever asked, did our best to keep conversations down, and complied with every request. At no point were we told what specific daytime noise standard we were supposedly violating. The second night, we observed quiet hours after 10:00 p.m. and the next morning we remained quiet until after 8:00 a.m. Despite following the rules, the repeated drive-bys and warnings continued. Had the ranger simply asked us one final time to lower the noise, we would have gladly complied as we had throughout the weekend. Around 7:00 p.m. on our final evening, one family member was setting up a camera for our annual family photo. We had not yet gathered as a group. As a ranger drove by, the camera happened to be pointed in his direction while the angle was being adjusted. He stopped, accused us of recording him, claimed we were still too loud, and informed us that we were being evicted because we had already received two warnings. The sheriff was called, and we were given only 1 1/2 hours to gather nearly 60 people, pack multiple campsites, and leave or face arrest. The way this was handled was heartbreaking. We hadn't even eaten dinner. Our children overheard repeated statements about being arrested, became frightened, and several were crying. Instead of remembering our final night together, they now remember being rushed out under the threat of arrest. What hurts most is what they interrupted. The children and young adults had planned a surprise dinner for all the parents, aunts, and uncles. After years of watching the adults cook, they were finally old enough to take over the kitchen themselves. It was supposed to be a milestone after 12 years of family camping. Instead, it became a memory of fear and heartbreak. Beyond our experience with the rangers, we also noticed that the campground itself has declined. The restrooms were dirty even after staff had supposedly cleaned them. Two sinks remained clogged, toilet paper was left on the floor, and the restroom floors were still filthy. While cleaning the restroom, a staff member loudly yelled at several of the women in our group instead of speaking respectfully, making an already unpleasant experience even worse. We understand that campground rules exist for everyone, and we accept responsibility for our mistake on the first morning. However, there is a difference between enforcing the rules and making guests feel targeted throughout their stay. If large groups are expected to remain nearly silent during the day, then perhaps the group campsites should be located farther away from individual campsites. After 12 wonderful years of making memories here, it is heartbreaking that our family's tradition ended this way. We will not be returning. Thank you, Lake Camanche and EBMUD, for turning what should have been another joyful family reunion into an experience our children will never forget... for all the wrong reasons.

We haven't been here at sunrise, but the sunsets and stars are so beautiful... you can't help but slowly walk out when it is time to go. Lake Theodore is right off the road and not too hard to spot the entrance. For parking, you can park on the side of the road, right up to the entrance. There is a park & route below about 50 yards away, but that's quite a walk. You do go through a swirly gate and down a path, and there is a trail that leads to the back of the lake. There are spots you need to really pay attention to because of rocks and tree roots. Some trees are growing into the path. There is also some scat along the way, but hey! It's nature. What else do you expect! I have yet to take the path all the way around the small lake, but I have gotten halfway. It's easy to get stuck casting in spots because you'll see some big fish swimming by, or we start catching. In this small lake, you can expect to catch big mouth bass, small mouth bass, lots of blue gill, green sun fish, and a few extras swimming around. For us, the most popular bait we use is the natural big earth worms and night crawlers. For the big mouth bass, the seenkos are pretty popular... 3"-4" long (and we use the watermelon ones). I do like to head back to the front before it gets dark. You can see random spiders building their webs as the sun starts to set and heaven forbid I walk through those trees and go through a web and end up with a creepy crawly! I love bugs and fishing... but a random bug will make me shriek bloody murder, lol! When the sun goes down(on my side of town), there are so many stars to look at. Planes mostly fly over from the backside of the lake and those are fun to watch, too. I think we sat one night until 11pm casting and watching the stars. It was nice the moon was not out this particular night because it made it nice and dark and the stars shined so bright... As precautions, I suggest bringing bug spray and sun block. Bring some small collapsible chairs. Stock up on some water or whatever you drink. I easily spend 4+ hours at a time here admiring the beauty of nature. For those of you that know... tight lines!

As you drive up...there is a small parking area. You cannot drive in...there is a gate...so you park on the outside and walk in. There is a dirt path you can walk or ride a bike. By the water you will find places to put a chair and fish. This is a small lake. It is not for boating...or swimming.. There is a sign that clearly states no boats. It is so beautiful here. Peaceful. It would be a great place for lunch or just to sit for a while. I saw some ducks...and birds but no other wild life. It would be a nice place to walk your dogs. Don't wear new shoes...lots of red dirt.

Some tackle lined the walls, along with a few freezers containing frozen anchovy, sardine, lamprey, shad, and assorted invertebrate bait. I approached the counter and Sharon helped me out. They were "out" of regular bloodworms, and only had jumbos, apparently. For a considerable mark-up, I ordered a dozen. She hand picked them from a large bin, and having fished with blood worms my whole life, there didn't seem to be anything jumbo about them from my experience. Either way, I paid for my bait, bout a small styrofoam bait cooler for a couple days camping to keep them alive, and out the door I went. I think I paid a few cents extra for using my card, but after dropping $30 on a dozen bloodworms and a couple bags of frozen 'chovy, what's the difference? Shrugged it off as a vacation expense, and used that bait to catch hundreds of fish... sure, only one of them was legal, but had a great time in Rio Vista proper, and will likely return in the future for fun on the Sacramento River.

We went last month on a Wednesday around 11am, so not a lot of people. People started coming around 3-4pm, I'm guessing it's because school is out. I can see it being crowded on the weekends. It's is a pretty small beach. **Do check the signs or ask before entering about high levels of bacteria. As we were about to leave, they posted "caution" for risk, but the guy couldn't tell me what bacteria.

LAME!!! This place…read moreused to be fun. Now it feels like going to a prison camp that you can fish at. The rules make no sense and the staff barks them at you relentlessly. SMUD still isn't allowing trailered boats to launch even though the rest of the state relaxed their launching regulations. SMUD even relaxed their mussel restrictions on the upper American, but not this stagnant pond. My son and I used to enjoy fishing here, but since closing the launches and forcing adults to wear life jackets on paddle boat watercraft or threatening to kick us off the water...your time could be spent better elsewhere that doesn't feel like the rest of California telling you what to do.
