What a wonderful little Filipino restaurant! The dishes are served cafeteria style where you choose a side (rice vs pancit) and 1 or 2 main dishes. I usually shy away from this especially since Covid due to sanitary concerns, but all my worries went out the door when I put the food in my mouth!!! Pancit - 8/10 - great flavors, the noodles were a little dry but that may be because it was sitting out too long. Shrimp obud - 10/10- absolutely delicious! it had bamboo shoots in it and the curry was so flavorful I could drink it. Dinuguan - 7/10- it was tasty but couldn't get over that it was pork blood.... One of our favorite places for Filipino food! We occasionally come here when my husband misses his grandma's home cooking and this cafe never disappoints! The cafe is more on the smaller side but it's cozy and the customer service is always happy and friendly! When you walk inside, there's a hot bar with all the food items available that day. You can check their Facebook page for their menu each day! You can get combos like an entree and a side, two entrees and a side, etc. On the shelves near the windows, there are local Filipino desserts like crinkles, puto (rice cake), flan, etc for sale. They also sell mac salad in the fridge and some dried fish on the shelves. What I love about this cafe is that they have a small snacks/drinks/candy market next to the dining area. The dining area is a good size and faces the parking lot. On this particular Saturday, we had the following entrees and sides: Lechon (roasted pig), Kaldereta (Filipino beef stew), and some rice! The lechon pieces were big and the skin (my fav!) was crispy, salty, and golden! The meat was also juicy and not dry. What I like to do is dip the meat into some white vinegar to give it some acidity since the lechon is on the heavy side after a few bites. The Kaldereta was hearty, rich, flavorful and it reminded me of an elevated beef stew. The potatoes and carrots literally melted in my mouth! I gave my combo plate a 8.5/10! My husband had Humba (braised pork belly that is slow cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, bay leaves, fermented black beans, and sugar) and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He shared some pieces of it with me and it was smooth as butter. It was sweet and salty and his rice soaked up all the sauces. Definitely a must try! I would give it a 9/10 because the flavors were so rich and it made me want even more! The prices are reasonable for how much food you're getting! They also sell desserts like halo halo (shaved iced with fresh fruits, taro ice cream, toppings like flan, condensed milk, jellies, beans, etc.) I've personally had the halo halo and it's one of my favorites! Super refreshing on a hot summer day. They also sell mango and taro flavored cakes but you have to call in advance for whole cakes. Their cakes are light, delicious, and fluffy! I especially enjoy the mango cake because you get chunks of fresh, champagne mangoes on and inside the cake. We've been coming here for years and don't plan on stopping. Stopped by for lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the choices available. I of course got the lumpia and pancit, and tried a few of the other offerings as well ( won't attempt to spell it) but the chicken and rice was delicious. Greetings from Jacksonville. Housesitting means vacation and vacation means local-ish food! Today, it's Filipino. Never had it, and well, gonna be making a big effort to get there in December (if you knew you know). I walked in and was instantly welcomed. The shirts they had were funny "you can't scare me, my Wife (or mom) is Filipino!". I had no clue what to order so I left it up to the lady behind the counter. Pancit, rice, caldereta, and dinuguan. The pancit... rice noodles with chicken and vegetables. Well seasoned, full of flavor, and just exactly what I was hoping for. The caldereta, tasted like a good hearty stew for winters. It gave me the feeling of winter comfort food instantly. Dinuguan... which I would've said was a slow cooked pork belly that tasted like BBQ... until it was told to me that Dinuguan is pork offal, with vinegar and blood. Now, before feeling grossed out, trust me on this, IT WAS DELICIOUS! I trusted the kind woman behind the counter and she's got my trust when I go back again! I also had this calamansi drink. I love citrus, so I had to try it. Ding! WINNER! It helped cut through some of the fatty notes, balancing it all out. Before I left, I saw the karaoke machine... definitely the Filipino vibe one looked for. But the entire ambience was wonderful. Laid back, welcoming, and just relaxing. It had a deep broth and lite vegies like carrots. Large chicken parts but could not see what parts so I decided that's what I will try. I hoped it would not be a watch out for the bones experience. As I started my meal by putting the CC into a bigger bowl and saw the big parts were breast meat. Immediately that broth was a taste explosion and after trusting there was no bones I devoured the curry dish and wished I had bought a large :(. The curry was light and not spicy or over salted. Just right. So now definitely need to get back quickly and get more but also try some of their other fresh made dishes. read more

A friend recommended this place to us. We were on the hunt for crispy pata. A dish my parents were craving. I called and they said they could make it to order and it would take an hour. We were coming from the other side of town so we placed the order and headed that way. Took us almost an hour to get there but it was ready when we walked in. They had other dishes cooked and ready for purchase as well. We grabbed a fried tilapia, drinks, and a few filipino snacks as well. Besides the cooked food, they have a little shop on the side too. *NEW LOCAL BUSINESS ALERT!* Lola's Filipino Cafe , located in a mostly empty shopping center on Blanding Blvd. (towards Middleburg), has been open for 3 months and is one of the newer local businesses on the restaurant scene. I heard great things about Lola's from a friend, so I paid them a visit to try them out and spread the word. From the moment I walked in, I was warmly greeted and made to feel at home. Wonderful aromas emanated from the kitchen and immediately brought back fond memories of my late mother cooking up a storm whenever she was expecting guests. There's an expansive dining room, and a convenience store located to the right stocked with Filipino snacks and groceries. I spotted the familiar glass jar of Halo-Halo that my mom used to buy when I was growing up and grabbed one to take home, even though I could never make it quite as good as she did. Moms are like that. One of my favorite dishes is the Beef Caldereta, or Beef Stew, with potatoes, carrots, and red peppers, so that was the choice for my main. The two sides that I chose were the Pansit noodles (of course), and the Adobo Rice, which has Chicken Adobo sauce folded into it. I also ordered a half dozen Lumpia, because let's face it....how could I NOT get Lumpia? And no, they're NOT eggrolls or Filipino eggrolls.....they're Lumpia (loom-pee-yah). I had another errand to run, so I brought my food home to enjoy as I wrote this review. Beef Caldereta: The beef was tender and flavorful, and not too fatty. If I was smart, I would have gotten some Pan De Sal (Filipino rolls) to sop up the heavenly sauce. Veggies were plentiful and had just the right texture. The dish, as a whole, was simply glorious. Pansit: Easily one of the more popular dishes in Filipino culture, and this one didn't disappoint. It was highly reminiscent of my family's recipe and each bite was treasured. Adobo Rice: They were smart doing this, because the sauce from Chicken Adobo is highly addictive and is often requested over rice...whether someone is ordering Chicken Adobo or not. If you haven't tried it, this is where you go to find it, because it's delicious and mixes well with any other dish. Lumpia: Lola's version is packed with meat (not thin like you would find at other joints), crispy, and scrumptious when dipped into the side of chili sauce. The lady at the counter (owner?) treated me as if I was a member of her family and answered any and all questions like a pro. She let me know that on October 10th (Sunday) they will be serving Lechon (Filipino Pork dish of the Gods), so I went ahead and pre-ordered a pound for myself ($15). If you want some, I highly recommend you call and pre-order, because Lechon isn't something that sticks around...it sells really fast, and it starts at 10am. Prices here are fair, and they pack ALOT into each plate, so unless you're a competitive eater, it's easily enough for 2 meals. Plenty of Filipino selection dishes and prices fairly. The server and cashier (might be the owner) we're friendly and patiently waited for us to select our food. This is a shop that placed itself well because there's not much Filipino restaurants in the deeper part of Orange Park and Middleburg area. I only know of one other Filipino restaurant in Orange Park. My verdict... I really enjoyed the food I've ordered here at Lola's. Her food and cooking reminded me alot of my late Mom's cooking, whom I miss terribly. And Chef Lola (Jessica) is so friendly and funny, as well as her staff. Will definitely be back. This is a small Filipino cafeteria (carinderia) and grocery store. You order hot prepared dishes, pay, and take your food into the dining room next door. We got Lechon paksiw with rice ($11.50). My wife really liked it; for me it was a bit too rich, and seemed to have a lot of skin in it, which I'm not a fan of. That dish was pure meat, so, to get some vegetables with our meal, I got a bowl of chicken curry ($6.75) too. The chicken curry had potatoes and carrots in it. It was decent, but not something I'd get again. We also got a leche flan for $7. It was pretty good (I always like leche flan): the sauce was nice, but it was drier than I'm used to. In all, we spent $28.01, more than I expected, but we did take about half of it home. The owners were nice. They have a smallish selection of Filipino groceries next to the dining room. The dining room was simple but roomy and I was comfortable there. You bus your own tables. The bathroom was decent, though with some room for improvement (e.g. no paper towels in the dispenser). Tried this one on a Sunday just before closing time. Overall disappointed, based on the reviews I read. It's cafeteria style and tasted like it all had been sitting for quite awhile. Lumpia is prepared to order when you get their but ours tasted like it needs more seasoning in the filling. Wasn't particularly bad tasting, but not equal to the previous reviews comments. You seat yourself in a small seating area so obviously their main business is take out Or catering. Folks were friendly and service was fast. Portions were HUGE! Don't wait If you're afraid of the adobo being salty don't worry it's not here, but they do make sure that soy is available to amp it up! Bottom line Everything we ate was delicious! On December 13 I found this location because my husband and I wanted to bring some authentic Filipino cuisine to our friends house. It was our first time there, we were greeted warmly and happy faces came out from the kitchen. The scent from the kitchen was awesome! We found there was lots good dishes, we ordered 3 large pancit containers, a full order of Lumpias, 6 siaopao and some very yummy ube pan. Sinigang is a sour soup and I really like my soup to be sour, however, other places don't make it as good as homemade. Lola's really takes the cake and I'm super excited to come back again. (just a side note...wondering if they get a lot of traffic due to location) I digress, the first time I've eaten here and after having a pork & chicken adobo combo plate with adobo rice and banana lumpia for dessert ... yum!! it won't be my last meal here. Even though this restaurant / mini grocery is clear on the other side of Jacksonville, whenever I'm in orange park I will stop in and try more entrees. I also purchased some frozen beef lumpia from the mini grocery store. (More on that once I try them) The service from Lola was very welcoming and courteous. I stopped in hoping to pick up some Filipino bread rolls (pandesal), but they did not have any. They did however, have siopao, a steamed bun with either pork or chicken. I opted for the chicken and warmed up a bun immediately when I got home. The slightly sweet bread was soft and fluffy with a slight chew. The chicken was moist and flavorful, but a little salty. Despite the saltiness, the chicken and bread complemented each other. Overall a good representation of Filipino siopao. read more
