Snuggled into an endless remote thick Pine Forest at the water's edge in the aptly named Sea Otter Bay where hundreds of cute little faces faces stop smacking clams with a rock on their chests and smile at you as you power by. Is this place easy to get to? Not exactly. Flying is not high on my list for an enjoyable day and if God wanted men to fly why is parking at the airport such a pain in the ass? No matter, as each flight was smooth as a puppy's tummy. Yes, it's a bit of a schlep but then so was Victoria Falls and Base Camp on Everest and all three had a serious grand pay off. Is it worth the effort? Absolutely. But first you have to secure a reservation long in advance preferrably for a group of four. The Lodge is limited to only 20 lucky peeps. It's like trying to snag two seats at Hayato for Kaiseki Dinner in LA. Start trying three years in advance. So at El Cap regulars book the same week year after year and then eventually bequeath that coveted reservation to their children. Everything you'll need for your fully guided fishing adventure is provided. All you need is your Undies and a tooth brush. Newbies, be determined and persistent and with luck you're booked and for what you are about to receive the price point is more than fair. I flew from John Wayne in Santa Ana, California to Seattle and barely made the connection to Ketchikan where I overnighted at The Landing Hotel which El Cap works with. Not the Ritz Carlton but clean and comfortable. I was too lazy to go downtown for dinner and opted for The Portside in the Hotel. Perhaps I should've gone downtown or wolfed 6 Twix Bars in the room. My cold tortilla with Halibut Fingers stayed down and I was ready at dawn to wedge into the Float Plane for the flight to El Cap. We jiggled and wiggled along to a soft landing at the El Cap dock. Swiss Chalet style structures are connected by gritty no slip ramps, bridges, and stairs which take you to the beautiful full Bar, a breakie sandwich, and your complete Helle Hansen inclement weather bibs, jacket and boots. Equipped, it's time to trot back to the dock and get on your boat and leave by 8:00 AM in time to fish your pants off even though it took a while to yank your pants on. You'll return with the fish Fish Tanks loaded at 5:30 PM The Fishing is superb. Salmon, Halibut, Ling Cod, Vermillion Snapper, Black and Blond Rockfish are all patiently awaiting your hook. The gear, boats and Guides are all top tier pros. The boats are North River, fully enclosed Cabin and head, with twin Merc 250's to get you to the Sweet Spots and Honey Holes before the fish wake up. Be advised if you're prone to motion sickness, take your Bonnies because you ain't comin' back until the Guide has boated the limit on everything the he has it in his mind to go for. Finally, it's all ashore. Time for a quick hot shower in your well appointed comfy Cabin and then back to the Bar to enjoy wonderful Appetizers with the drink of choice and some serious retelling fishin' tales past and present. Or talk about something less animated, like Politics, Religion and your third Wedding Night. Life can be mean, cruel and short but here it's a respite from the storms in your life. Relax and have another plate of Fried Chicken Wings with house made Ranch Dressing, and never mention that to your Vegan Cardiologist. Eventually at 6:00 PM you'll migrate to the Dinning Room where Chef Tony works his magic. Fresh caught Halibut with crisp Haricots Vert and a trace of Beurre Blanc Sauce or perfect Filet Mignon with rich Mashed Potatoes and the last night it was Roasted Salmon settled into a painting of Red Wine Reduction interlaced spikes of White Wine Butter Sauce. Almost too pretty to eat. Almost. Each Breakfast is different everyday and the boat is stocked with an array of sandwiches, cookies, drinks and treats to keep your energy level at peak performance. Sound inviting? It is. El Cap is where it's at if wishin' for great fishin' is your mission.

It was my first time at Fireweed Lodge, but immediately felt like I was staying with long-time family friends. It's abundantly clear that they, and the entire staff, are genuine, good-hearted, salt-of-the-earth folks who want you to have a great time (and get on a lot of fish). I was on Adam's boat all 3 days I was there and couldn't have been happier. Adam knows his stuff and continually made game-time decisions that paid off (also, as an added bonus, he's hilarious which comes in handy when the bite slows down from time to time). Summed up, everything you could possibly ask for in a Captain. Limits of Coho and Halibut every day with some healthy Kings on a couple of days (which is not guaranteed in late August, when we went). We planned a trip in early September this year for a self guided fishing trip. We thoroughly…read moreenjoyed every minute of it! The fishing that week was fantastic! Our first day out we chartered a halibut trip with Captain Jim. While he tried his best, we couldn't seem to get too many on the boat. That's fishing! He was a great guy and regardless of the number of halibut we caught (3 chickens), it was a great day on the water! We talked to Jim throughout the week and they did have some better days catching some good sized fish. The next 3 days we spent on the 23' upgraded boat fishing for salmon and let me tell you, it was phenomenal! Jason and Trish led us to some of the places that usually catch fish and none of them disappointed! We caught some of the biggest silver salmon I've seen! They were some bruisers. We even spent one day rock fish and halibut fishing. We know very little about this but managed to stumble on a good little hole. 4 halibut and 7 rockfish later, we were headed back to camp. SOOOO much fun! The crab pots were slow to catch but we still managed to eat 5 of those tasty little critters! It was an absolutely extraordinary trip! One we would definitely do again in a heartbeat! We know that fishing is not always "hot" as we fish back home a lot, but we hit it just right! Adventure Alaska does a fantastic job as is evident by all the return clientele we met at the lodge. The trout lodge was great as it fit 5 of us perfectly. The hot tub and pool table was a welcome distraction after a long day of fishing. The fillet table was very well setup. Everyone was very willing to offer advice and we also met some great guests! I go to alaska at least once a year to fish and this is by far my favorite trip! If you are looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and are willing to do most everything yourself then this is the place! After many flight delays, I was tired and frustrated by the time I arrived at the airport. I didnt…read morehave a hotel planned or a place to stay already set up. A kind local lady recommended me this place and called the owner directly to make sure that I had a room available to stay for the night. Ken, the owner was extremely hospitable! The house was super easy to find, follow all the signs at the Klawock airport to Craig and make a left on East Hamilton Rd when you get into Craig. Go for 2 minutes and you will see it on your left. When you walk in, the staircase to the rooms are directly on the right. My room had its own private bathroom and the bathtub was a jacuzzi jet tub. Everything was very clean and the bed was super comfortable. I had an excellent 2 nights of sleep. My room also had its own private patio with a small table and 2 chairs. Outside of the rooms there is a little snack area with coffee, tea, fridge, microwave, and chips. Downstairs there is a common living room area with comfy couches, big screen tv, movies, and board games. In the morning, Ken provides breakfast items such as oatmeal, fruit, bread varieties, cereal, milk, hot chocolate, etc. You can make coffee with the keurig and there are hot tea choices as well. My ultimate favorite part of the entire place is the back patio. The view is breathtakingly amazing. Its right on the water and watching the sunrise with my cup of coffee and oatmeal was the best way to start my day. I plan on coming back during the summer for more Alaska fun, and this would definitely be the place I would stay!
