The people who work here are the nicest and most helpful folks you could ever meet...One Friday evening I was having trouble with my AR. The new lower didnt seem to work with a new upper. One of them went back in the building and came out with their lower to try on my new upper. Worked great. They then tried their upper with my lower. Worked great. We were able to conclude my combination just didnt work. And figured out it was just not fitting right due to hammer. This was 5 mins before closing on a Friday. You can't pay for better service. And I didn't have to! The range itself isn't bad. I know some ranges have longer rifle areas but its fine for my needs. They are undergoing continuous improvements but its still a bit rough. It will get there. For the price, I don't think you can beat it. One warning, after or during a rain, bring an extra pair of shoes... Mud. But that's just Texas. read more

Well worth the drive if you're coming from Austin. Safe, professional, yet friendly and inexpensive. Also, they are there to help but will just let you be if you don't need help. Also on the plus side (for me at least) is that the range is outdoors- personally I don't care for indoor ranges. Open rain or shine, allow holster draw, firearms for rent. Have to say I haven't found a better public range near Austin. If you don't mind a bit of drizzle, rainy days are great to have things more or less to yourself. read more

Extremely friendly people with ridiculously low prices for ammo and rentals. It was our first time firing guns and we never felt uncomfortable here. The drive there is a bit long and the road is unpaved at some parts, but once you reach the area you will know you are in good hands. Good range! One of my favorites in the area. Down side with any good range, it's popular! If you are going go early or go late. Week day afternoons are great as well. Staff is normally very friendly, but have had one run in. Have a great set up but no place to shoot buckshot. They also have a wide variety of firearms to rent which is also a nicety. read more

My friends and were first time shooters so we were a little nervous going into it. But the guy that got us started off was incredibly friendly and more than willing to get us set up with a beginner gun and show us how to get started on the range. It was a little bit pricey but we were able to split all of it between the three of us so it wasn't bad. We will be going back again and bringing more friends with us! read more

Wow. Russ, who taught us how to shoot safely was an extremely good teacher... I thought that well, if I take the CHL classes at this place and he's not teaching, then I've got no chance of getting classes with a similarly-competent instructor. I was wrong. I took the class with Ross, a 70-something male, and his wife, Dorothy, and found the class extremely informative - interesting and totally not what I expected at all. Ross brings his experience as a shooter and various other jobs into our world to prove the value of practice and care regarding guns. It was like stepping into a dangerous world and understanding the consequences from someone who had seen them first hand and had very good stories to tell about WHY things are the way they are regarding the penal codes associated with handguns and situational ethics that call for intelligent and independent thinking. I find that these folks have much to offer if you are willing to listen and to understand the value of handling firearms safely and effectively. The shooting ranges are only faulted with being too close to where you go from one range to the other (bring ear protection), but beyond that, I can see why they separate the rifle range from the pistol ranges. Totally enjoyable experience for both me and my husband. I have heard since about the tragic story of the owner of the place (a woman) whose husband, in building the place, was killed in a roll-over tractor accident while putting together the ranges. She has truly made the place workable, friendly and has some very competent, intelligent and informed staff. This is where you want to learn how to shoot and where you want to get your CHL, I don't think I'd trust any place else. read more

I love going to lone star! It's a lot of fun and a cool little drive out of the city. Dealt with Louis when I went and he was extremely helpful and very pleasant to deal with! His customer service is on point, I noticed lone star is very serious about fire arm safety but at the same time they are very serious about having fun too! Great environment for beginners or experienced shooters alike. Came here for my bachelor party and rented a few pistols and rifles. We spent an afternoon shooting and everything from the rentals to the ammo to the refreshments were reasonably priced. Matt was very helpful and taught our group of newbies how to be safe and have fun on the range. Can't recommend Lone Star enough. I went into this range with high hopes. I was trying out new ranges in the area, and was looking for somewhere to be my normal spot. However, after a session at the range here, I can say with certainty that this will not be it. First, I should note that I have worked in firearms sales and training for the past 3 years, and am a lifelong shooter, so I have a decent understanding is what is generally required from both an employee and consumer perspective. With that said, the range has several nice elements. It is inexpensive to shoot at with only $15 per day, and their selection of rental firearms is adequate. However, all of this does make up for their absolutely horrible customer service. While the initial person I spoke with was quite friendly, the one I mainly dealt with was extremely arrogant and condescending. When I asked to rent a firearm in order to try the range, I was peppered with condescending questions, including whether I had ever held a gun, shot a gun, what types of firearms I had shot, if I owned one, how many I owned (with a "bullsh*t" response given back to me when I answered,) and more. I certainly understand the importance of determining a customer's level of experience, as it was something I've frequently had to do myself, but a simple "Are you familiar with the firearm?" would yield all of the same information in a far less hostile way. Once these questions were finally answered, I asked to see the firearm in question before renting it (normally a standard action, to confirm that everything looks alright), and was told "they're all the f*cking same." I was muzzled while the gun was being presented to me, which is an absolute breach of safety protocol. Finally, despite all this, the employee I worked with seemed to be relatively unfamiliar with guns, lacking knowledge of several of the current, top-selling handguns when they were mentioned in the conversation. Between the hostility, the condescension, the lack of safety, and the seeming lack of knowledge, I found the customer service here to be extremely lacking. That, combined with the lack of safety officers on the range and a cursory google search bringing up several accidents in the past, created an atmosphere that I felt was not conductive to a safe or enjoyable shooting environment. As a final note, I do want to attempt to give the benefit of the doubt. As I was new at the range, I can understand them wanting to gauge experience level (though it certainly could have been done in a less-hostile manner), and maybe I simply caught that employee on a bad day. However, my experience at other ranges in the area has been far more positive and welcoming, and I will be doing my shooting at other locations. read more

I cannot leave a review that truly represents what a great experience we had at Lone Star Gun Range. I was out in Austin for a bachelor party and we decided it would be a good idea to go to the range and shoot some stuff that isn't legal in California. We had a group of 10, most of whom had never shot before, but Sandra and the staff at Lone Star ran everyone through a detailed safety course and made everyone feel comfortable with the firearms. We had a range master with with us the entire session to help or answer any questions that may arise. We shot the SOCOM, AK47, AR-15, Dragunov and the .50AE Desert Eagle. Shoot the Desert Eagle if you get the chance! After we finished shooting, the staff at Lone Star went far out of their way to ensure we had a great time and got home safely. When my boyfriend moved to Texas from the frozen hinterlands of this great nation (aka, from Illinois), he went a little gun happy. Before I really knew how it had happened or why, we were in possession of three firearms. We did a lot of research on places to go to practice shooting, and Lone Star Gun Range was the best deal we found by far. It's only about 30 minutes away from San Marcos in Lockhart, Tx, which is a perfect location. Seriously, can you name a more quintessentially Texas Saturday afternoon than going to Black's Barbecue to eat massive amounts of meat and then heading out to a gun range for several hours afterwords? Lone Star is also the best deal we found as far as prices went. We both have year memberships, which at $65/year (as opposed to $12/day for daily passes) pays for itself in about five visits. It's a completely outdoor range with covered stations and sturdy berms. They have separate areas for rifles and handguns, though the handgun area is often crowded with people from one of their classes. You can rent hand guns for a small fee if you want to test out a certain type of gun before you buy it and they also have a limited selection of ammo for sale inside the clubhouse. The people who work out there are very knowledgeable and more than willing to answer any of your questions, and as another Yelper mentioned they're also strict on the rules when it comes to safety, which is a good good thing. I have gone one time... I don't believe I will be going back. I did not see any range masters out on the range. The only staff were in the building. I believe that since it's a public range, a range master has to be out at all times when there are people there (by law). This is not the first time I have heard of this happening here. read more

A little snarky with attitude of the counter staff. Ammo prices marked up way to high. Get new tires for your car or truck for the rough road and gravel, lots of mud after a rain for several days, ranges too close together in some places.......NO SAFETY OR RANGE OFFICERS at all. It is a matter of time before someone gets hurt or killed. 10 cent targets sell for a dollar.......if you are a distance shooter......go somewhere else as all they offer is 100 yard MAX! I brought my nephews who are teenagers. Guns can be intimidating to me. The guys were stern, thankfully, but friendly and super cool. I became uncle of the decade after dropping $200 on guns, ammo, and hours and hours of time. Was worth it to get from off Call of Duty. read more

What to like: Good rental selection. Great rates (fee includes all guns, targets are cheap). Friendly staff. Lots of shooting stations. What can use improvement: Lots of mud; clay soil retains water even after it hasn't rained in a while. This range is A-OK because there are some safety issues. Some of the range lanes are separated by large dirt berms. These are passable in that long gun rounds shouldn't pass over or through to the next range lanes. However, one of the hand gun ranges there are only railroad ties separating the different distances and folks firing their AR rifles on the 25 year range (this is apparently allowed) seem to believe it is safe for the seven yard folks to hold a cease fire and post targets while they shoot. This is unacceptable at a range that bills itself as safe. Safety is left up to the shooters and there is little staff involvement. This works if everyone is on the same page. Eagle Peak is certainly a safer range (I don't mind getting yelled at there, even if I didn't do something wrong) as the rage personnel at Eagle Peak are very involved. If you don't like Eagle Peak, Lonestar is a great alternative. read more

The only reason to go there is proximity to Austin. With the exception of one lady, the staff is rather indifferent. One worker is downright rude. He is the reason I plan on drivind twice as far to another range. I don't know his name, b/c nobody wears a name tag, nor has anyone offered their name or made you feel welcome. When one walks into the office they just stand there and stare at you. The ground at many of the shooting bays is riddled with mounds and holes and littered with spent ammo cases. We like this range a lot, we've been about a half dozen times and the staff are always extremely helpful and friendly. They've never been to busy to properly explain everything, and always give you the run down on any rentals you take out in a clear, concise way. All the rentals we've had have been in great condition, never had an issue with any of them. Range fees, rental fees, targets, rental safety gear are all cheap. Ammo is fairly priced too (for a range). read more

We headed out to the range today for my birthday. I was ready to try out my new M&P Shield. When we arrived I noticed a group of men on the pistol range. They did not look very experienced, in fact they were playing around, and made me very nervous. They had .9mm and were limp wristing it, muzzle control, not pointing the gun downrange. My husband, as well as a few other customers said something to these men, advising them to stay safe. I finally went into the office and asked they come out and observe. They were helped for a bit, but then then staff went back inside. This group continued to not follow safety rules, taking pictures, showboating, with huge lack of respect for others and rules of the range. Soon they left, and all the customers on the range spoke about how relived they were. About 5-10 minutes later this group returned to the pistol range, this time with a suitcase. They opened it up and we all see the Gold Desert Eagle. They could not even handle the 9mm safely, but now they rented the Desert Eagle. The entire range stepped away... quickly. In awe, we watch one man fire the gun, he couldn't control the gun at all. The gun ended up completely turned around, pointing at the customers. That moment I yelled to put the gun down, and ran inside demanding someone come out. After the next customers were checked out, one of the staff did come out and take the gun away. It was a story to tell. Gun safety should be the upmost importance to the range, and though I loved coming here, and my husband has a membership. I honestly will never come back, nor will I bring my friends, or tell any other woman I recommend this place. 3 staff for over 40 customers (being conservative) on a busy Saturday, without any Range Officers, I was taken back by the situation that I felt could have been prevented and better supervised, thankfully no one was shot. read more

First I would like to say I heard about this place years ago but did not want to go alone. So I asked my sisters to come with me. I have used a firearm before but it was years ago. So we decided to go one afternoon. I was greeted by a guy named Will who seemed not too friendly at the time he just said to sign in and read a paper,so we did that. There was a pretty big group ahead of us and this other guy started to talk to us his shirt said Pistol Pete, I thought that was cute, he was very very thorough and knowledgable and not to mention a pretty funny guy. He proceeded to help us pick out some firearms and bullets and took us to the shooting area where he not only demonstrated how to use these awesome gat's ( ya i said Gat) but showed us how to load/reload and shoot. I really think this guy did a GREAT JOB! I have mentioned him to a few of my friends and family who have also met him and prefer to see him when he is there. Well Mister Pistol PETE!! I took a CHL class at the Lone Star Gun Range today. I have learned more about Texas Law and History today than I ever have in the past. I was very impressed with the staff, and so impressed with the knowledge and know-how of the two instructors. It clearly made me understand what it means to carry a weapon, why I would or would not want to carry a weapon. Yes it is my choice, but there is so much more to it, as I have learned today in class. I mainly took the class because of the senate passing new laws, my circumstances as a single mother and other situations that I might face in the future, having to maybe protect myself at home, or at work and I wanted to know what that means. Or having to protect my children, again everything was explained with detailed examples and I really grasped, that there is so much more about law and how it is actually carried out and what all that means to me carrying a gun. I have decided to wait on applying for a CHL because I do think I need way more training to be comfortable with carrying a gun and I also need to learn way more about the laws and consequences it may bring. But in the meanwhile, I will be at the range practicing and shooting and learning. Again, the knowledge of the staff in "REAL LIFE" is highly impressive. Thank you so much for giving my a great lesson, not just about guns but about life. I highly recommend for anyone who needs a CHL class to go to Lone Star Gun Range. read more
