My boyfriend and I were visiting our friends in Texas so of course we had to go to a gun range. I will say that this outdoor range was absolutely amazing! You experience a sense of freedom you don't necessarily experience while at an indoor range! It was raining, but we stayed until they closed! Rented the Desert Eagle .50 cal., one round was $3.75, but so worth it! We bought 10 rounds! I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone. First off, thanks to the directions on the website, finding this place was super easy, helped me avoid all the tolls that Google Maps would have taken me through. Once I got there the man behind the counter, also named Louis, was really helpful. Lone Star has a wide array of weapons to rent and Louis knew everything about each one I inquired about and was able to show me how to operate them as well. The prices were really reasonable as well! I have a friend that's moving down here soon and I plan on taking him here first thing! If you live in Austin or the surrounding area, why not go to an awesome outdoor range on a beautiful day? Looking for a freedom Friday shooting range we moved here based on accessibility. Start to a long night of poker and BBQ pulled pork :-) Loved. IT. Staff are serious, but can cut up and crack a joke. Few had a small group of 4 with hand guns 9mm they .45. Brought our own ammo, but the ammo bags on site were reasonable. Being outside we had a jack rabbit jumping through the handgun range. Note: it's not cool to kill these wandering animals, so we measure our firing appropriately and he found a way out. Tip: driving from southwest Austin grab the 45 outside of buds to the 130. Dirt roads, but when you get there you are shooting at a number of fun targets. read more

I'm a long time attender but first time reviewer for Lone Star Gun Range. The facilities boast a 100 yard rifle range, two pistol ranges, a skeet range, and a plinking range just for 22 caliber long guns. Parking is adequate, as is their indoor reception area where you check in and can rent or buy guns, ammo, and targets. I do recommend buying targets elsewhere and bringing them with you because their $1.00 per target is a pretty high markup considering you can buy them for about 25 cents online in bulk. But for an occasional shooter this wouldn't be a problem to buy them their. As for the ranges themselves, you are allowed to rapid fire and draw from the holster but you really are quite limited in the tactics you're allowed to perform. No shooting on the move or in different positions, etc. You can shoot your rifle at the pistol range but you cannot shoot a handgun at the rifle range. You're further limited at the rifle range because all you're allowed to do is shoot from the seated position. That pretty much only allows you to plink or practice slow accuracy shots. This can get boring for a tactical shooter that likes to move. But it is what it is. Make sure you have excellent hearing protection on the rifle range because the aluminum awning over the benches can cause some mind numbing vibration with all those rifles blasting at once. I had to double up with foam inserts as well as my earmuffs. Be wary of the occasional young city dweller hipsters that come in groups to shoot and may not know what they're doing. They seem to show up every time I go at least. The staff are pretty laid back and there are no range nazis there, but the shooters pretty much police themselves. It works out; just know the rules or the other shooters will certainly remind you. Overall, I give this place high marks for atmosphere and a relaxed but fun time. If you need more room to shoot such as a tactical bay for various shooting drills and shooting your guns on the move though, this is not the place. I recommend Best of the West shooting range for that. read more

Wow. That's an unemphatic "wow" too!. I proceed inside and see the same male now sitting down, to my left, he's on a computer (that's slang for 'staring at a screen - here in Texas), and a couple appear to be browsing the area. (The reason I'm here is because I'm attempting to determine the following : 1) How good are stock-levels for general range gear / equipment (eye-wear, hearing protection, other items)2) How nice are the staff, as I'm wanting to bring a family member - who i've taught basic safety instruction to - to take the LTC Course. 3) The level or amount of range ammunition available - because ordering online or going to a local store can sometimes be more trouble than it's worth *This is where I've begun to just go to different cities, not this TOWN, in particular - there isn't enough time to actually browse before getting the bland 'can I help you' customer service question. My dress wasn't in any particular range, nor was it indicative of my wealth or lack-there-of - cargo shorts (tan), a regular tee w/undershirt, Costa (flashlight company) cap, Ray Ban sunglasses I removed once I entered, and nike shoes. I left my wallet in my vehicle, no pocket knifes, just my rings - that I wore - were visible. (I've been to GTs, Reds, ALL Austin shops)I just began browsing at what range-gear is in the glass and the male at the computer asks me 'the question' and I'm (again) more interested in visually seeing - The 3 / THREE Criteria above - I state "I'm just browsing - The tone i'm receiving is "do you have money!" The guy responds with 'is there anything you're looking for' and I response "i'm just looking around, to see what you'll have, you didn't have to get up" The guy is giving me some type of mad-dog stare and becoming impatient with me. I've been inside maybe 45 seconds and getting a strange response. Just for looking at 1 section of the display counter. I can see there are at least enough, 14, packaged eye-shield (shooting glasses) available, so that WAS a good start, there is also small bottles of gun-oil and...some 'Operation Repo' or other pseudo-military type patches - in small zip-lock bag(s) - the type you would put on a velcro space for a vest and a very, VERY, expensive box of Hornandy .454 Casull ammunition. I glance to my right and see the old 'break room' wall was removed and now the right side of the room is a 'wall display' - everything isn't an inverted 'U' shape - where every item is directly in front of the person. I begin to look at the available ammunition, on the back wall, and this time I'm presented with ORDERS - but first I get the same "do you have money" question put into a rushed 'can I help you' question' - again I state 'i'm not shooting' - then i'm being told "you need to sign in!" I've never needed to sign in at GTs, Reds, or McBrides just to browse the inventory. Didn't get more than crappy-attitudes from the two younger-gentlemen working behind the counter. I'll just get a Gift-Cert. from Cen-Tex & have the family member take the course elsewhere and I'll save myself the $200+ I would have spent on the family range-day. read more

Since I first visited in 2008, I have not found a better range in the Austin area. The team has worked hard to constantly improve the range and handle the big increase in traffic. Throughout all this, they have been extremely diligent with safety. Here is a huge "THANK YOU!" to all the staff. If you want to go shooting, this is the place! You can shoot pistol, shotgun and rifle in the great outdoors under the shade. They have a huge selection of rental guns. For new shooters, they also have a number of class packages. Go shoot in the morning then take the quick drive to Lockhart for lunch. It makes for a fun Texas day! read more

My second favorite shooting range, but much closer than my favorite. Smaller groups, so you don't have to cease fire as much as some others that are one long range. All outdoor, and great for practicing. I am in Law enforcement, so I need to have a place like this one to practice our shooting methods. As long as theres not too many people they let us practice. I am an unexperienced shooter and I took a group of guys to this range, a few of them were first timers. Their staff not only made us feel at home, but they were very thorough with instructions on how to be safe and how to operate each gun. They helped us feel confident and comfortable with operating each and every gun we shot (pistols, ARs and scoped rifles) The outdoor nature of it also makes it much more enjoyable than some of the other indoor ranges in Austin (where I live). Definitely check this place out whether you are a pro or a beginner with guns. read more

This is a no-frills, basic Texas outdoor range. I walked in and was immediately greeted and told to read a mandatory safety list and then to (out loud) profess my understanding of what I read. That's a bit odd but I get their point considering the seemingly clueless population of shooters out there, who think they don't need to study a variety of books, blogs and experts before they blast away. Everything else is a bit loose. I never saw a range officer outside for even a minute. Granted there were only a few customers that day but the presence of a RO is a must in my opinion. Anyone who hates ROs likely don't know what they're doing or are so egotistical that safety doesn't matter to them anyway. Perhaps they had cameras and were viewing range activities in the office? The shooting lanes are shaded but fairly basic wood and plywood. I prefer lanes to be separated by bullet proof steel or concrete. I doesn't take much for a novice or idiot to send out a stray round from a negligent discharge. They let you collect your own brass for reloading, but the ground was literally covered with spent shell casings that made for some tricky footing. Maybe sweep up a bit? Overall I like the staff and the setting outside of Lockhart. The $15 to shoot all day is the real draw for me. Plus you can get some Lockhart BBQ and come back the same day. read more

Great place, Quite a bit more relaxed than the famed Eagle Peak (which I like also) I went on a friday afternoon and was virtually alone on the range. There were a few people there when I first arrived, but I did not have to wait for a lane. The staff was friendly and the only complaint I have is that there are no dividers between shooting lanes. Not a huge problem, but I did get hit with 30-40 shell casings from the guy to my left. I am sure the guy to my right had the same issue. Oh well, if that's the only thing to complain about, it must be a pretty good place to shoot. I will definitely be going back!!!! read more

We are two complete novice when it comes to gun, but we had such a fun time here this weekend. Slightly disappointed that we didn't get to shoot skeet as originally planned because the ground was muddy, but Will and his team recommended other guns we could use to shoot target and we ended up trying out 3 different ones, had a blast. This review is for the guys who helped us out the past weekend - Will & another guy whose name I can't remember (so sorry!). They were SO helpful and friendly, especially as we were beginners walking in with zero discernment of guns. I've gone shooting a few times in CA, and had gone to Red's Indoor Shooting the day before, and in my experience the people working at gun ranges look at beginners as a huge waste of time. On the contrary, the guys at Lone Star were patient, and willing to walk us through the types of guns, pros & cons of each, and general basic knowledge of all kinds of guns. These guys definitely (and, I guess, obviously) know their gun material, and on top of that just seemed like all-around really cool people. I highly recommend coming here! read more

Ok.... Had never fired a gun in my life and was a little nervous. Right from the get go I was well looked after by Jason who explained absolutely everything regarding safety, how to shoot and the different types of guns available. I mean the guy stopped his lunch break to help me out mid-shoot with questions; it was like I had a private instructor all day! For the bargain price I paid, I had the best day, ended up using 5 different guns and felt confident to be out on the range. So worth renting a car and doing this once in a lifetime thing for me, would be awesome to go back! Five stars, hands down. read more

Not much to say here that hasn't been said already. The range is very accommodating of large groups, the prices are reasonable, and the facilities are more than adequate for the shooting I do. The only downside is the lack of shaded seating. The ranges are often quite crowded, and there really isn't anywhere off the shooting line for people to sit in the shade. The Texas heat is scorching, and the lack of shade detracts from the enjoyment somewhat. Since Lone Star Gun Range has acquired a reputation as a good place to bring a group of shooters, it would be good for them to invest in a couple of pavilions or something like that... even as rentals. My membership at Austin Rifle Club lapsed while I was out of the country, so I dropped by Lone Star to do some shooting. Location is decently good, about 30min from where I live near the UT campus. The main annoyance is that their hours aren't totally fixed, so during the week it's advised to call before heading there to make sure they're open and have staff on-site. The actual facility is pretty solid, with well-constructed berms. The booths are a little rough, but the overhead cover is well-built. Target frames were a bit beat, but I was told that they were just about to make a fresh run. Target prices are reasonable ($1 or less). Rental prices are highish ($12) but not terrible. Ammo markup is a bit heavier than I'd like, and you do have to shoot their ammo in the rental guns. Overally, if you just want to go shoot occasionally, I'd go with Lone Star. Same if you're just going shooting on a whim. If you plan to shoot regularly, I'd get a membership at Austin Rifle Club. It's a longer process at ARC, since you have to go to an orientation and get voted in before you can even shoot there, so 2-3wks delay from wanting to join and actually hitting the range. On the bright side, Lone Star gives you somewhere to shoot during those 3 weeks, and is also overall a better deal for those who just want to shoot a few times a year, or want to be able to rent guns. read more

Lone Star took fantastic care of our bachelor party and helped our guys have a great time. We were a bit nervous due to the unsupervised nature of the range, since we all had somewhat limited shooting experience. But the gentleman in the office walked us step by step through the process, and before we knew it, we were safely and confidently shooting pistols and an AR-15. Ammo adds up but that's to be expected when you're renting at a range. Close to some killer BBQ as well! read more

Lone Star gun Range is ok but needs improvement. 1. Staff needs to get out of the shack and have a little situational awareness to meet customer needs. 2.Target staplers are almost always either broken or out of staples. Pain in the ass. 3. The ISO containers used to store target frames are full of broken frames or on some occasions there are not any ready for use. THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE COMPLETE USABLE FRAMES READY FOR USE BY CUSTOMERS. 4. A brass pickup has never been conducted. PICK UP THE SPENT BRASS. The range is sloppy. 5. MOST IMPORTANT. STAFF NEEDS TO ENFORCE THE RULES. I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES A CEASE FIRE HAS BEEN CALLED AND YET PEOPLE REMAIN ON THE LINE EITHER LOADING MAGAZINES OR DOING WHATEVER. WHEN A CEASE FIRE IS CALLED EVERYONE SHOULD BACK OFF THE LINE. THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. BACK TO COMMENT #1. 6. SEPARATE THE RIFLE AND PISTOL RANGE. It is so annoying to be shooting a pistol and some yahoo who just bought his new AR shows up with the intent of just ripping through magazines of ammo at the 15 yard line without any concern for the brass he is dumping in your face. Pain in the ass. The other complaint I have is not with the range but with the quality of some of the shooters that come to the range. Some really firearm illiterate people come here to shoot. BE CAREFUL. I would strongly advise that each shooter bring his own IFAK (Individual first aid kit). The range is somewhat remote and I am not sure what medical response times are or if the staff on hand has adequate trauma kits or first aid training. I just don't know how prepared the staff are for medical emergencies but I wouldn't bet my life on it. read more

Plenty of space and I've yet to go when it's over crowded, people that go here are polite and respectful of one another. Plenty of shade/cover. Terrible experience. Went last year and gave it another chance. Staff is rude. Last year, they had us help pack up the range while their staff members spent half the time shooting their own guns. Gave it another chance. We had family from out of town visiting and coordinated everything to meet up at Lone Star Gun Range once again. One of the employees followed us into the range in his vehicle. Speed limit is 35. We were doing 25-30. Says we need to slow down. He was polite. No problem. Then later on one of the employees said one of our group members shot over the berm and kicked us all out, even people who were not even near us. He didn't shoot over the berm. Staff member said based on the way the gun was sitting that the bullet would go over the berm. I respected the staff member and said problem. I politely asked if I could leave with the person suspected of shooting over the berm and allow the others to stay. He said no, everyone needs to go. The staff member watched one of the members of my group staple 4 fresh targets then told him to pack up. A guy that was with the staff member took the targets and put them out to shoot for himself. The staff member then proceeded to shoot his 50 cal rifle with his buddies. Honestly seemed more like he just wanted to clear some benches. You just lost 16 customers. And your site says 9am-7pm. And yes, you can control what google says . Hire someone that knows how to manage reputation for you. The way you run your business, you're gonna need it. read more

I've been to this range twice so far. It's the best range in my area as far as I'm concerned. Even though there are 3 ranges which are closer to me, I drive the extra distance gladly. On the two shorter ranges I'm able to shoot my carbine or pistol from the same table. No absurd rules like some ranges have about only firing one round every 2 seconds. Pretty sweet little shotgun range too. Really glad I found this place. read more

The guys here are nice to work with. Gave us alot of their time explaing gun questions. Unjammed my 12 gage that I still need to have looked at. Nice range setup although outside and here in Texas is hot. Will be nice to come out during the cool weather. Also nice to only be charged a daily fee vs an hourly fee everywhere else. read more
