A good range with solid pricing on day use.

This place is severely under par. They only had three lanes for the 100m range and all were taken and all they did was just talk. No safety's were on any lanes. We were there for 30 min and they only shot 1 time on the 100 m lane. I would not be caught dead there again, do not recommend to anyone. 1 x 25m lane and once again they were just talking or BSing. Had to drive 45 min away to another shooting range. FML 45 dollars wasted. read more

Bare bones outdoor range. Nothing fancy about the place. It was exactly what I was looking for.

About a half-hour south of the airport, Lone Star Gun Range is a nice outdoor range to shoot rifle and pistol. They have a covered 100yd rifle range and two covered pistol ranges. There is an air-conditioned indoor facility with a restroom, clubhouse and pro-shop. It costs $12 to shoot all day or $65 for a yearly pass. They also have firearm rentals if you want to try something new. Rather than have timed breaks to go downrange to change targets, all the shooters police themselves. As long as you're being safe, you can also draw from the holster and shoot rapid fire . This is a HUGE plus to anyone that's done any firearms training or competition. Standing at a bench and following a one-shot-a-second rule gets very old after a while. They don't allow full-auto unless you're law enforcement but they may add this amenity in the future. I really, really hope they do as there's no place in the Austin area to shoot my M-16. They are also licensed and teach the Texas concealed handgun class. Definitely the best range in the Austin area. read more

We had a great experience at the beginning of our time here. I bought 22 Long rifle ammo at this range for some more shooting fun. However, when I went inside to buy some Birdshot one employee told me the law is you have to be 21 to buy rifle or shotgun ammo. He refused to let me buy birdshot for my shotgun. As a 19-year-old, I am in fact allowed in Texas to buy shotgun ammo and felt an attack on my rights. All staff members were great except the one who refused to sell me the ammo. They should be better educated on gun laws in Texas, especially when refusing to sell ammo to an 18 or up individual. read more

17HMR @ 100Yds + this Yelper = 1 dead ass target. I got 19 shots out of 20 in the kill zone equivalent to the size of a groundhogs head. The remaining 1 bullet was a dud. Groundhogs hide your children. read more

As of yesterday I had only shot a gun once. You see I am not from Texas but I have been here three years and maybe I am turning into one. That coupled with the fact that it's hard to get the teenager to want to hang out with Mom. So yesterday when I gave my son three choices, go see Avatar, go bowling or head out to the shooting range, it was an easy decsion. He picked the shooting range. The staff was great and didn't laugh at my lack of experience. I had a great time shooting at the target that was supposed to be an immigration officer, since I immigrated my now ex husband over two decades. This was my chance for revenge. I will absolutely be back when the weather is a little warmer. It's kinda addicting. read more

I am writing this review for my partner - I think Lone Star Gun Range is her new home away from home. She absolutely loves going here to shoot, she raves about the helpful staff, and easy location. She appreciates (as do I) the respect the business and patrons have for women learning to shoot, and experienced shooters as well. On site they sell targets, ammo, rent guns, and offer CHL classes. It has its ups and downs. Pros, you can shoot rapid fire, shoot off hand with assault weapons out to 100 yds at CHL silhouettes, and kind of do your own thing without range officers. Cons, there are no sand bags to shoot off of from the benches. Apparently, some incredibly bright people decided to use the sandbags provided by the range as targets (i guess they looked like little prairie dogs and exploded when hit?) so now the owner only provides blocks of wood and cinder blocks as shooting rests. Bring your own if you plan on shooting off of a rest. read more

There are very few moments that have you driving down a dusty trail in the middle of nowhere and things ends up amazing. Normally you're waiting for some alien beast to walk in the middle of the road or waiting to find your vehicle incapacitated by some trap laid down by some unruly locals. This was our shining moment, where our expectations and fears were thrown out and everything amazing that could happen, did happen. This was like Dorothy walking down to Oz and actually finding a real wizard. Alternatively, this was the feeling that would have happened if Star Wars I, II, and III were actually good. I was an alternate reality Dorothy this past Saturday, and the beautiful people at LSGR were my wizards. The amazing folks at LSGR accommodated my huge group and showed us how to party with 50 caliber Barrett rounds (costs $5 a round but worth every greenback). We also shot an AK47, 9MM and .22 handguns. I understand now why people own these precious metals. They kick major ass. I wholeheartedly recommend LSGR. read more

A safe and fun range. Far enough from downtown to keep the college kids awaybut close enough to get there in about 25 minutes. The staff is fun but safety is top priority. Prices are fair. They are extremely helpful to newbies and the firearms are well cared for and clean. Drop the $10 per round and fire the Barrett sniper rifle and feel your heart beat out of your chest. Coming from CT I've never fired or been in the vicinity of a gun, it's just not the culture up here. My Texan boyfriend and I decided to go to this range and try it out based on yelp reviews. To the inexperienced: GUNS ARE LOUD. Also please ask questions! The staff is very helpful and will go through everything with you step by step so that you have a fun and safe experience. Exactly what I like in a range. The staff is polite, safe and extremely helpful. The ranges are well structured and the element of personal responsible is felt everywhere. Went there to check it out. Enjoyed it as it is how a range is supposed to be. No frills with a good structure and layout. Went back with my son and other folks who regularly go to Eagle Peak. The BEST gun range in the central area.... Does not look like much, but once you get there you're views expand... Great staff who helped me fix my Assault rifle and sent me back locked and loaded! The drive is long and the road winding, but the anticipation is well worth enduring to arrive at this out door gun range. The staff at Lone Star are your standard fare, cool, collected, laid back Texan professionals. There to help with a smile when needed and working hard around the range, otherwise. The Pros: 1. Aside from the courteous range staff, you'll meet some of the coolest people on this range. Be encouraged to strike up a conversation with your lane neighbor! 2. Price for a day long of fun is $12, +$5 registration fee if this is your first time at the range. 3. With the exception of someone renting and firing a .50 cal rifle in the next lane, the muzzle blast and reports from other people firing is negligible compared to an indoor range. 4. Pretty much the only range near Austin that allows safe and disciplined draw from holster in addition to rapid fire. 5. You can fire FMJ ammo, unlike another outdoor range NW of Austin. The Cons (not many and mostly beyond LSGR's control): 1. The Texas summer heat is killer for all outdoor ranges. Fortunately, there always seems to be a nice breeze blowing by at this range. 2. The distance. I'd come here weekly if it were closer! There you have it. Make the drive and get out here for your range needs! read more

Definitely had a blast shooting here this past weekend. I will have to say shooting other indoor ranges is definitely not as fun or friendly as shooting outdoors. Pros: Since its outdoors the sound isn't confined and compressed against your head. Fresh air and shooting outside on a beautiful day is always pleasant. Pus, the staff and fellow patrons are very friendly! Neutrals: This place is safe, but then again its a gun range.. hence take extra precautions and act accordingly. Cons: If you rent one of their guns you have to use their ammo which is marked up. The cost is however reasonable because they only charge you $12 or so to shoot for a whole day. Given my cons and neutrals regarding LSGR don't add up to much and that this is the best gun range I know of to date; I'm giving LSGR 5-Stars! I would definitely return and shoot here again, even with the long drive from Austin! read more

Probably the best range in Austin. Prices are great, and you don't feel pressured while you're there. The employees are friendly and you don't get the attitude that so many ranges dish out. It's a little far out of town, but it's totally worth the drive. But it's at least a scenic drive, so hey! Another huge plus is the customer base. I've found that compared to the indoor ranges, the people that come here are far more experienced and friendly. And experienced means safe. I've never seen kids firing a handgun sideways and giggling between every shot at Lone Star. That's not the kind of environment I want to be in when I'm around firearms. But I get nervous every time I go to the indoor places. Overall, it's a far more relaxed and safe experience than you get anywhere else in town and that gets my business every time. I was a loyal customer here, emphasis on WAS !!!! I wanted to go skeeting on Father's Day so had my wife call for hours, the guy told her that the throwers were down, one was broken and one needed TLC, per the guy. So I decided to wait. I call today to ask if they've been fixed. The guy that answered stated there was nothing wrong with the range. So I said, "Really, cause last month a guy told my wife the ....CLICK!. Let me start this review by saying as soon as you get to this shooting range, you will instantly grow a beard and have the urge to fight forest fires with your bare hands. This range is a perfect example of what it should be, a no frills business with great staff and awesome facilities. -They offer multiple ranges distances 7,25,50,75,100 yards, as well as a trap station with two throwers. Also available is a bow range if so inclined. -A great selection of rentals, both rile and handgun you'll definitely find something to fit your fancy. -The shooting areas are open, but covered so rain or shine you wont be exposed to the elements too much. But when it is raining the facility can get muddy. But as i said before, the beard you grew upon arrival should be merit to your manliness, so a little weather and mud shouldn't bother you. -If your new to shooting this range has the potential to be overwhelming, your first visit to Lonestar the staff (when they're not to busy wrestling bears and expanding the range) will have you read the safety guidelines and expectations and then have you read a statement out loud verifying you understand the guidelines. One thing to understand YOU ARE THE RANGE OFFICER, which means you call your own cease fires. Meaning when a cease fire is agreed upon, you let forth a scream that can only be described and guttural roar/growl that will definitely be heard by all shooters on the line. While you should be maintaining safety at all time, you need to be vigilant about what is going on around you and make sure other people are being safe.- -It's a bit of a drive but definitely worth the trip, not just for the facilities; but it puts you about 8 minutes from some of the best BBQ in the country. You can now supplement your manly diet of raw meat and milk suckled directly from a cow udder with delicious smoked meats and sweet tea. In conclusion best range in the area, best prices in the area, all walks of life shoot here business men, out of country visitors, novice and experienced alike. Definitely worth the drive. Just remember to shave that beard you grew, most people couldn't handle that level of epicness. read more

I made it a point to go to Lone Star again, despite the distance. Man, am I glad I did, Lone Star is king of the hill, as far as I'm concerned. It seems like half of Austin feels that way too, a group of us went Saturday at noon, and the line to pay was almost out the door! Oddly enough, after we paid, there was plenty of space at both the pistol and rifle ranges...I'm not entirely sure where everyone went. The prices are reasonable, the lanes aren't terribly crowded, the range officers aren't dicks...the entire place just has a "feel good" vibe. I struck up several conversations with folks in the lanes next to me, and even fired a rare carbine that a guy next to me had. Other places *eaglepeak* put such a huge emphasis on safety that it puts everyone on edge, and as a result the outing is much less fun. Lone Star will be getting my shooting dollars from here on out. read more

Ever shot a gun before? I sure as hell hadn't until yesterday. Due to the fact that I'd been in Austin for over three weeks and had only tried three of the four things that I classify as Austin-esque (if that's even a word) we were on a mission. We had already experienced the famous Texas barbecue, loitering around food trucks and lounging at local watering holes. It was time to try our hand at shooting. Like in the olden Western times, right? Since we were in Austin, Lockhart was a great choice distance wise. After a quick 40 minute car ride we arrived at the Lone Star Gun Range. As we made our way down the gravel road leading up to the range we were quickly informed that in fact, we had reached our destination via the symphony of gun shots that hung in the air. This was going to be good. After parking the car and gawking at the folks firing AK-47s and all kinds of weaponry I could and still cannot identify we headed over the office. While there we read the instructions of the range, said a one sentence oath about not firing during a ceasefire and then we were off to orientation. Orientation consisted of a 10 minute speech from a very knowledgable man who actually explained things very well. After picking out our weapon of choice - a Glock - we gave it a go by practicing loading the gun a few times with some fake bullets and that was it. it was time to shoot. Ah, I almost forgot. How much does this day of revelry cost you ask? I'm glad you mentioned that. It wasn't the cheapest excursion but it didn't break the bank either. Below is a cost breakdown for two people shooting but sharing one gun (which seemed to be the norm on the range). We spent a total of $66 and spent a couple of hours at the range. - Day Pass - $15 per day per person. - Gun Rental - $10 for one gun. Also worth mentioning, the second gun would have been $5. - Target - $1 for a single target. - Box of Ammo - Our box of 9mm ammo cost $23.31. Always felt safe at this gun range and everything was explained so well to us even through we were newbies. So the moral of the story ... if you're ever in Lockhart, Texas and want to fire some guns ... Lone Star Shooting Range is the place to be! Best place to shoot around here. Safe, Fun, friendly bunch of people. I think getting 20+ miles away from the city cuts back on the college kids and lookie-loo's. Staff doesn't have any Macho hangups or attitudes- huge plus over the competing local range. Prices for ammo aren't great but then again, you are a captive audience and no Wal_Mart within sight. Oh, and if you are bitching about the gravel road (Jack S)...? huh? that's kinda the point! Stay at home with your car in the garage if you done want it dusty! read more

Never fired a gun before in my life until last year when we decided to purchase one . the lone star range was recommended to me to learn how to use it ** ive been 3 times since and every time the staff were as helpfull as can be. as a *rookie ** ive still got a lot to learn and felt comfortable asking any staff there to help me out each visit they made sure that was somebody was there to watch me and give any advise that was needed . i need plenty and lots of practice so this is certainly the place to go . read more

Just took my wife and kids here, Great choice! They have a nice lil range for shooting .22lr there that has steel targets. It didn't have some rude range officer that didn't make the force breathing down for neck or yelling at you. Not that is happened to me, just saying. My boyfriend and I came here as two novices who knew nothing about guns, and left as two badasses who just shot a bunch of different guns. At first, I was really nervous that the staff would get impatient with us since we didn't know anything, but they were super helpful and patient. They told us step by step how to do everything. First off, thanks to the directions on the website, finding this place was super easy, helped me avoid all the tolls that Google Maps would have taken me through. Once I got there the man behind the counter, also named Louis, was really helpful. Lone Star has a wide array of weapons to rent and Louis knew everything about each one I inquired about and was able to show me how to operate them as well. The prices were really reasonable as well! I have a friend that's moving down here soon and I plan on taking him here first thing! If you live in Austin or the surrounding area, why not go to an awesome outdoor range on a beautiful day? Looking for a freedom Friday shooting range we moved here based on accessibility. Start to a long night of poker and BBQ pulled pork :-) Loved. IT. Staff are serious, but can cut up and crack a joke. Few had a small group of 4 with hand guns 9mm they .45. Brought our own ammo, but the ammo bags on site were reasonable. Being outside we had a jack rabbit jumping through the handgun range. Note: it's not cool to kill these wandering animals, so we measure our firing appropriately and he found a way out. Tip: driving from southwest Austin grab the 45 outside of buds to the 130. Dirt roads, but when you get there you are shooting at a number of fun targets. read more

William and Sandy were extremely helpful in explaining the different guns and showing me how to safely load, handle and shoot several rental guns. I am considering the purchase of a 9mm and today's experience will be very helpful in my ultimate decision.
