Went on Memorial Day...for Dollar Day ($1 hot dogs & beer). It didn't go so well. Lines for everything were crazy. Too few betting windows open...I missed a race I was trying to bet because I was on line for 20 minutes. You would think betting windows would have more staff. Fared a little better on the beer line. That prolly only took 15 minutes. Hot dogs? Forget it. All in all, if I didn't see some horse racing, it was a wasted day spent mostly waiting in lines. C'mon LSP...add some staff! read more

Okay, well. I guess I'm just a snob. I enjoyed my experience here soooo much more when I was in a suite upstairs. :| But can you blame me? Downstairs it's overpriced fast food and mostly beer, messier, overrun with children (and just people in general. I don't do well in big crowds), and no place to really sit and relax. The tables get taken up quickly and if you find one there seems to be a high likelihood it'll be covered in trash. Recently I was invited to a celebration for our great friends, and we were able to enjoy a suite. So different! Extremely clean (much cleaner bathrooms), way better food (like real food, including fruit and cheese plates), and a bar with much more variety. You can watch the races from the balcony in privacy and really experience how beautiful the park is as a whole. If you're trying to come up with a venue for a special celebration, I'd definitely recommend this. You really get to enjoy everything the facility has to offer and you can make your bets right in your own private room! read more

Too cold inside for me. They also allow smoking inside. The Silk's restaurant is awful. They call theatre nacho cheese ---queso! Gross! The Caesar salad with salmon was $16 and awful. Romaine lettuce is dry, dressing tastes like it's from the grocery store bottle. Croutons were generic. My salmon was so salty I had to scrape the salt off of it and it was cold in the center. Otherwise nice event space but save your money and just eat a hot dog! Sheesh Service was good. It's been two hours since we ate there and I feel so sick. They're food is truly overrated garbage! As a longtime resident of Grand Prairie, I had never visited Lone Star Park (minus driving by) until last Friday. Boy have I been missing out! I had the privilege of experiencing Lone Star Park from the penthouse suite as a guest of media night and it was such a great experience. From the moment we entered the gates, every single employee was extremely kind and helpful. Once we made our way to the suite, we were greeted and began enjoying the buffet spread and drinks, as well as appetizers. Gambling is not my thing but betting on the horses was actually pretty fun once I figured out what I was doing. The employees were extremely helpful in helping me to place my wager and cash out each time. Valet was really easy to use and I probably waited about 5 minutes at the end when the races got rained out. Overall, I had a really great time and can't wait to go back with a group of ladies and I will have my big floppy hat on. It's only right to wear to the horse races. read more

Go and try to win big. It can happen. Horse racing is a lot of fun. If you win that is. But even if you lose or break even it is still a good time. The parking is free unless you park up front. The cost to enter is cheap. You spend your money on betting and food. General admission is great for me. You can walk outside stand or sit whatever you want. It does get hot in the summer. You may want to be inside. Wear a lot of sunscreen and take a hat if you are outside. You can pay more to sit up in the inside which is nice also. There you can see all the track and you have air condition. read more

Last night, I attended a press event at Lone Star Park. Although the staff was undoubtedly aware that they were entertaining guests from the media, you could tell they were just as kind and considerate as always. The buffet in the suites was a great spread, and the drinks and passed appetizers were all perfect. Our night ended early, due to an insane amount of rain, but it was a blast while it lasted. Let me preface my review by saying last year my husband and I bought a private box 3+ times and each time was amazing, tons of fun, NO negatives! So, I was so excited to do the same this year. Then, I experienced one of the worst nights out/events in my recent memory. We arrived to the same box we have been in every time. We had invited friends, one is pregnant. We were dolled up and excited to blow some money and steam and let loose. First, it took forever just to get past the ticket box to get our stickers. When we got up to the box level it was freezing and *surprise* the high end food buffet they have ALWAYS had that I had been craving for weeks is no longer available. Instead you can choose from the usual, low food cost concessions at an insane markup. Ew! Our waitress service sucked! It took her over 30 min to deliver a beer and water. The menu they have in the box- don't even. It's cafeteria quality food at triple the price. Whatever, I grew content with drowning my disappointment in a hot dog and started betting on the ponies. After only 3 races the storm of the year blew in. The venue stopped the races and made us wait an hour or longer before they announced they were canceling the rest of the races. It was obvious from the beginning they would have to! They just kept us wondering so they could keep selling food and drinks! And, surprise, surprise, no refund! No vouchers! No apology even! Just get the hell out! Then, the worst part. We waited about 30 min to go down to valet. Their "system" requires that you give them your stub meaning you're left with NO proof you even valeted! We hand over our ticket at the same time as our friends. Their car comes in 20 minutes. It's pouring and freezing and crowded. We wait another hour for our car, at this point most everyone has cleared out. We ask for the supervisor and are informed he is in the "key house" so, basically we will have to figure it out on our own. Finally, we meet a valet named Christian who completely saved the day and went personally looking for our car. It took even him 20 more minutes. In short, don't waste your money. Dudes, there is not one thing I do not like about this place. Granted over the last 6 years I've only been in the Silks Lounge in the A/C and perfect views of the track! I've slummed it before and had fun hanging outside, but that was long ago, and indoors is the only way I want to go these days. Hehe. The silks lounge makes everything pretty easy for you. There are TV's at every table, and a person that will come to your table to take your bets. You have a waiter too. There's a menu to order food from or you can pay for the buffet. Absolutely was not a bad experience. Seems to me that everyone was nice. Everyone spoke and was friendly. It was very crowded- almost wall to wall people. I had no idea it was this serious. Placing bets was a learning experience. Other than learning how to place a bet- you can't take a long time placing your bets. That's when you can see people being irritated some. Which they will get over or move on. My coworker friend and I watched a actual race that was fun to see. The main event at that time- we watched on the television's that is literally everywhere. They do sell food for what I saw but we didn't order anything. With it being so busy we lucked up on a couple of seats on the patio. It was comfortable but it was summer time. A friend of mine asked me, "Hey, do you want to see Chris Young this Friday?" I was like, "Sure, I love him!" The price was great...$5 before 8:00pm. Great. Let's do it. Hubby's company had a private event in the concourse area where with access to the concession food court, games area, and outdoor area. The crowd was large, but not huge, and the folks at the food concession area could not keep up. The Mexican, BBQ, and Pizza concession counters were open. The Mexican counter ran out of food (tacos, burritos) with only nachos left. We waited in line for over 40 minutes at the BBQ/hamburger counter, and moved maybe 15 feet. We estimated that it would take another hour, at the minimum, to get to the counter. It did not seem like Lone Star Park was ready for a crowd. read more

To sum this place up in one word: inefficient. Everything takes way too long. We bought our tickets online you would think there would be a designated line to enter since you have already Paid. Nope you gotta wait with the herd of people who are going to buy tickles. Not the worst experience but not the best. The food lines move very slowly. They are inefficientLy run. I can't even imagine what it is like to wait in line for beer. The crazy thing is there were no lines for the bathroom. Guess they were all still in line for food and drinks. Tickets to get in are fairly cheap, food prices are not completely insane but the choices are terrible unless you wanna spring $30 for buffet. We came here for some off track betting and to watch some live races. First off, parking was crazy the day we came and the lots are a bit confusing regarding where just general parking is. Once through the gate though, the experience got better. There are plenty of stalls and machines to make wagers and the wait was not too bad. A program is a must so that you can accurately convey your bet. There are lots of people smoking in the outdoor areas so it may not be the best for kids. But if you are up in the clubhouse, which I recommend upgrading to, the ambiance is nice. And the lines are shorter. The grounds are large and there is a restaurant/bar onsite as well. There was an outdoor concert when we were there and some other attractions for kids. Lots of people book private parties here. Come early to beat the crowds. read more

My review is based off the facility, customer service, and the food. I thought the facility was beautiful. Only thing is, I didn't know anything about house racing. When the PR says place your bets. I was thinking for what? Lol, silly me! I don't gamble, so I wasn't into it. The horses were beautiful, and the customer service was excellent. I went to the horse races on a Friday night at Lone Star Park. What a surprisingly great way to spend an evening! I watched the races on level 6 in one of the suites, where you can move around from one comfortable location to another, inside with a view, or outside on the balcony where you can see the whole track. I'm not a gambler, but I picked some horses just for the fun of it. There's more than enough time in-between races to get another drink, sample some more of the 6th floor hot buffet, or place another bet. I would highly recommend trying it out when you feel like experiencing a new adventure. read more

Bought four tickets, a program on line, studied the races for hours, picked the horses, drove an hour, got to our seats and they announced that ALLrace's for the day were canceled due to a problem between the jockeys and the insurance company. We were invited to an event at Lone Star Park and had a great time. The group had a suite on the 6th floor and it was a great time. I was amazed at how clean the facility was and the suites were really first class. I thought that I was in a suite for a major sporting arena. The food was pretty good, while it was very standard American fare of baked chicken and chicken fried steak. They had lots of salads and sides including macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy. The desserts were also very good with lots of variety available. There was a carving station with smoked sausage and turkey breast as well. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We had to learn quickly how to be on the horses and the staff very politely helped us learn the ropes. It was a great time, but I think I was really spoiled for my first trip to the races. read more

We live fairly near to Lone Star Park, but unfortunately don't get over there very often. We decided to go last Sunday with some friends and have the Silks buffet (plus, you get to sit inside with air conditioning...). Everyone was very friendly to us and we were seated immediately. When I called for reservations, the lady said our seats would be "premium" seating. We were right next to the servers' tea, cleanup station. Not thinking that was premium. We were high enough to see the entire track, though, our servers were good and the bet girl (?) came by just in time for each race. The main complaint I have about the Silks indoor seating is that on the track side of the table, each table has a 17" or so screen that blocks quite a bit of the track view for some of those seated at the table. They need to figure something else out. One other complaint - there were smokers near us and I could have sworn this was supposed to be non-smoking. If you go, be sure and ask not to be near the smokers. The buffet is pricey ($30.00), plus you pay $14.00 for the inside seating, so it's not a cheap date. The buffet, however, was outstanding this particular day (early Sunday afternoon) with a great array of fresh salads, dressings, and condiments; prime rib that DH said it was the best he'd ever had, and he's a prime rib aficionado; sausage, smoked turkey, a pasta station, a nacho station (with that nasty ballpark yellow cheese, but once a year is OK, right?), and quite a selection of desserts. We had a ball, lost a few bucks, and enjoyed the food. I'll be happy to do this again when there's live racing going on. read more

Was there for Kentucky derby. Get your drink on before because the lines to get drinks are extremely long and drinks are certainly weak. No more waitstaff on 2nd level except for the bet taker, which is the one person we could do without since it isn't that bad to walk less than 50' to a betting machine which are fairly simple to use. The entry price is low and better yet, waging prices are minimal so we were able to gamble for quite some time without losing our rear end. The staff charmed us with their southern hospitality and heavy pours. And the crowd amused us-ranging from first dates to families to gambling enthusiasts-all of whom served as great people watching during down times. Entertainment is expensive these days. OK everything is, especially gas. Well don't despair about giving up your horsepower because you can experience real horse power for a fraction of the price at Lone Star Park (Are you sensing a marketable slogan there? LSP if you're reading, please contact me on where to forward the check) I know that horse racing is not for everyone particular those really sensitive to animal causes. Although I try and be aware of issues, I admit that sometimes I turn away and live in blissful ignorance. Do you think when I eat a weiner at the ball game, I think about the various discarded parts in it? (Hee, I said weiner!) I love the excitement of the racing, the beauty of these majestic animals and the fact that I can enter, eat and gamble for CHEAP. Lone Star Park certainly does not compare to the history and atmsophere of a legend like Santa Anita but it does a fine job of putting on a decent racing card for the masses. Friday nights are best since most things are a buck: admission, hot dogs, even beer. They also make a point to liven the place up with live bands, occasionally a third tier country artist you might have heard of. Oooh, and the best part...on cool evenings there is ample outdoor space to hang, pick the ponies and watch. When the temps tickle triple digits the clubhouse blasts a sweet A/C breeze. Whether you are looking to pass a few hours on a lonely weekend or want to party with friends, Lone Star Park will work for you. A special bonus is the people watching. Rarely will you see so many different walks of life converge....and the mini-bonding that takes place in the wagering lines when strangers exchange their picks, is priceless. Fuckin' A. This was my first time to real, honest-to-God horse race. We got to Lone Star at around 5:30 on Saturday. It was one of those magical autumnal days that just kept on getting prettier and prettier as it unfolded. A warm gulf breeze swept clouds across the sky like little wisps of tobacco smoke. We paid the lady her $3, walked through the stile and grabbed ourselves a well-earned drink. A Glen on the rocks was only $6. I guess the old casino logic holds true at the track as well: Get them drunk. Get their money. Taryn and I placed a couple of $2 bets and walked outside a couple of minutes before the races were scheduled to begin. We found an open table literally six feet from the dirt, I lit up a Cohiba, and the wind immediately kicked up and spilled Taryn's drink. As she left to get another (I know, I'm a real fuckin' gentleman) I took a quick look around: a group of 12 or so tough looking Mexican kids playing football; a family spread out a fluffy picnic blanket with enough snacks to feed an army; the requisite old-rich-man-on-Viagra/young-hot-blonde-on-Valium pairings. I mean, the races themselves were totally cool: thunderous pounding of hoofs with dirt kicked up in fist-sized clumps. But the really awesome part was the melting pot audience. Go ahead. Take your kids to the track. From what I've seen...it's good for 'em. read more

The first time I went to Lone Star Park I had no idea what I was doing, like that dog using the internet. I've been to lots of tracks in Southern California, but this one is arranged differently. The good news is free parking is pretty close to the entrances. The bad news is that unless you have someone with you telling you where to go, you'll end up staring vacantly at escalators and elevators trying to figure out what to do. Thankfully there are a lot of employees near the entrances who are there to help you figure out where to go. Recently, I was invited to attend a media event in one of the suites on the 6th floor. Hot damn, that shit was fancy. Passed appetizers, open bar, and a small buffet in the hallway that everyone on that level has access to. The suites even have little patios so you can go outside and yell at the horses (or other patrons). The food on the 6th floor was pretty good for a buffet situation. The particular suite we were in also had a dedicated teller for betting and a bunch of the voucher based machines so we didn't have to wander out of the suite to place bets. The Silks dining level is on the 4th floor. They have a large buffet, reserved tables, and a small a la carte menu. The buffet is large, and will run you around $30 (plus tax and tip) on a normal day, and half again as much on a holiday/event day. I've never eaten the buffet, but it looked okay. Most of the folks I've spoken with who have had it weren't impressed for the price. The a la carte food didn't look that great either, perhaps with the exception of the crab cake (yes, a single crab cake). All that said, you're probably not going to the racetrack for the sole purpose of a fine dining experience, and you shouldn't expect to get one here. The bar and book is a whole other story. Their food was good, and totally reasonably priced. While you don't have a finish line view (or any view unless you meander out to the back patio), the setup is nice with a huge bar area, some individual carrels with their own TVs facing huge race screens, and a few sets of couches and chairs where you can relax while taking in some racing. The chicken caesar salad over here was legit, and even came with a piece of grilled cheesy bread. Drinks run about $6 (varying depending on how fancy you get). And for all those wondering, no, they don't serve pina coladas. I like Lone Star Park, but it's no comparison to Los Alamitos, Santa Anita, or Del Mar, so if you're used to that level of luxury, book yourself a suite because that's the only place you're going to get it here. read more

Or just bet off of the names or gut instinct and see what happens. I've had about equal luck with both strategies. Reserve a seat in the upper deck by the buffet (don't have to buy the buffet, though). The fried calamari is excellent. Nothing beats the thrill of the race while enjoying tasty beverages. Horses-pretty, jockeys-cool specimens, win $-hot damn, beers-a plenty and scene-swinging. But the main attraction = Jose Otero. New executive chef of suites. Worth every copper penny if you can get up there. Buffet blew my mind. I'd drive to GP just to eat. Sirloin, Turkey, BBQ, all the fixings, salad bar, amazing chicken salad, sauté your personal pasta (I choose crab, onions, garlic, tomatoes, pesto and lil Alfredo sauce and still think back to how good it satisfied me) and onto desserts pecan pie, chock mouse cakes all superb but the delectable star was bread pudding. I've never had bread pudding like this, blows all the others away. read more

So Lone Star Park has been open 18 years and this was my first visit. I never knew betting on horses could be so much fun! Granted I was picking my horses based on their names but I was 3-4 so who's to say my system doesn't work. I actually attended on a Friday Media night so I was in the one of the Penthouse suites. After the Suite Life I'm not sure if I can go to general admission but I'm sure I will be fine. The suite included the buffet's in the hallway a paella station, pasta station, dessert table and one station with salad, chicken, brisket, taco bar and either sliced roast beef or roasted turkey breast. The food was top notch. Our suite included our own bartender Kash who kept the party rolling and the liquor flowing. He was a great guy. We even had our own cashier so we didn't have to walk down the short hallway to bet at the window. There was plenty of seating and the balcony outside was great for watching the ponies run but there were screens all over the suite if you wanted to stay inside. All in all it was a great night and great introduction to horse racing for me. It's already on my calendar in May for a ladies day out. No suite life but it will still be lots of fun. read more

We paid $8 to get upstairs however we spent most of our time downstairs running back and forth between the track and the stalls where they show the horses before the races. Next time it was agreed that we would buy the $5 admission as we liked seeing the horses before they raced. Lots of folks had their own chairs and brought in food, however the food there isn't so overly priced that you have to go in together to buy something (don't act like you don't know what I mean!) I didn't really know how to place a bet but the lady taking bets gave me a crash course . . . And then I was off! Some folks tell you to go with the horse that they are having the hardest time controlling (side note- that doesn't always work as my horse came in last!) however overall it was a great time and we look forward to going back again.
