For a true Texas experience you MUST visit a rodeo and Mesquite's is one that's been around forever. I went with a group of friends and we did the VIP deal which came with AYCE BBQ, beer and wine. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations but the BBQ was reallllly good. The ribs, turkey and brisket were fantastic. The jalapeno sausage could've used more snap but everything else was perfect, even the sides. The coleslaw went so good with the pulled pork. I was stuffed !!! We had good stead for the shoe, and it happened to be family night. The crowd was a fun mix of families, couples, friends and people of allllll ages. Many showed up dressed for the occasion which added to the vibe. Watching the young rodeo kids do their thing was such a blast. Kids as young as 4 riding sheep was the best. The barrel racing was fun , the bull riding was wild and intense. Just a great time all around. If you haven't taken the family yet, definitely add this to your list!!! read more

Our daughters came for a visit and wanted to go to a rodeo. This was a great experience and a night of entertainment! We liked how the number of people participating in each event during the rodeo wasn't too large so it allows you to see lots of different events over the course of the 2 hours. The size of the arena feels perfect in you are close enough to the action regardless of where your seats are located. Before the rodeo, my family stumbled upon the all you can eat BBQ buffet and featured live music in that area. The food was fantastic, with a few different meat options, sides, and dessert. My husband commented the ribs were the best he's had in a while. Our disappointment was how they didn't have enough food to truly have it be all you could eat. In fact, people were waiting to eat for the first time, let alone people who wanted seconds. New trays of food went quickly in this scenario. For $35 per person, we expected a different experience. They offer other food options via concessions if you'd prefer other options. read more

It's not as large, organized, or fancy as Dickey's, but it's still a good rodeo for the price. Most of the standard competition activities (e.g. steer wrestling, speed roping, bronc riding) are present, along with vendors all around the venue. It's been 6 years since I first visited the Mesquite Championship Rodeo...but here I was back in the area and since I had such fond memories from my first experience, I was excited to return. Though, this time around...I didn't have as much fun. Let me explain... During my first visit, outside the rodeo arena they had plenty of festivities going on like a musical concert, a petting zoo and walking space to appreciate living life like a cowboy! Unfortunately, during this past summer in late August 2021, none of the pre-rodeo events and activities were happening because of the pandemic. I asked the ticket office where all the fun stuff went, and they mentioned they had to cut things down to simply showing up for the actual Mesquite Rodeo and that's all. This was quite disappointing because for me, I really liked walking around the food tents, grabbing classic BBQ, eating fried dough, making nice to all the animals in the petting zoo, ya know...stuff that they would feature at the Texas State Fair. Instead, all that was gone. So...to come here specifically for the rodeo and skills events just wasn't fulfilling this time around. I don't want to say rodeos are boring but without the fun fair attractions, I was let down. Ultimately, I hung out and watched the rodeo until about halftime before eventually leaving. What won me over the first time was having both the highlights of a Texas Fair combined with a good ole fashioned rodeo making for a terrific combination. But to be here for the rodeo felt like a one-tone note. Oh well, hopefully in the future when the pandemic is over, they'll bring back the Mesquite Fair. Some extra notes... It was $22 for my ticket which was the cheapest they offered. I purchased it online ahead of time which wasn't difficult. It was $10 to park and then combined with taxes and fees it was $39 in total. My $22 seat was off to the side. If I had to compare it to being at a football game it was like sitting in the end zone, not at the 50-yard line. Still, my view was fine and there was no one seated around me. The rodeo started at 7pm but of course I arrived at 6pm when they opened the doors. This way I was able to grab pictures without many people around. Ya know it's funny...I'm a simple under the radar person and coming here to the Mesquite Rodeo pushed me out of my comfort zone (which I believe I've once mentioned, lol) and far away from my daily realities. I just wish I had a straw cowboy hat with me to sort of fit in with the crowds. But I went to Walmart and the Dollar Stores and couldn't find a cheap hat. I believe when I was here in late August 2021 it was the last rodeo event of the season, so at least I got to return one more time, in the nick of time. But without the pre-rodeo festivities, things weren't the same. Anyhow, it was okay to spend a Saturday evening here. The following day I was returning back to Arlington to attend a Dallas Cowboys preseason football game at AT&T Stadium. I've visited the Mesquite Area quite a lot. Mostly my visits were for the Dallas Marshals games/practices. However, now the Marshals have moved & I no longer associate with who I was supporting on the team. Anyhow, the other visits have been for the Hip Hop Rodeo. The venue is quite large enough to support big events as such although I wish the seating was a bit more comfortable. Overall, the staff have always been nice & informative. Furthermore, I'll be back next year for the Hip Hop rodeo !! It's the only piece of back home I get. Ironically, people in TX don't like rodeos too much nor do they even attempt to see why their so amazing; Of course to each their own. Not everyone knows the history behind rodeos, bull riding, team roping, barrel racing & etc. To some it makes their hearts drop & is terrifying but overall it's a sport I truly love & value. So thank you Mesquite Arena for allowing my family, friends & myself enjoy this amazing event ! read more

As a Chicagoan, and someone who is brand new to the culture of Texas and how rodeos work, I was completely freaked out by the show. There were bucking broncs, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping and more. The majority of the show I was nauseous just thinking about how someone (human or animal) was going to get hurt. Needless to say, my favorite part was when 4-year-olds ride the sheep :) Teachers were free the night we attended, so we sat in the $30 ticket section. I would highly suggest choosing this section and not paying $50 for VIP unless you want a lap full of dirt that the broncs kick up. Seating Tip (for the odd # sections): best view of the bulls/broncs is to the left, team roping/other horse activities are to the right, and barrel racing is front and center! The announcer had true southern charm, the clown was hysterical and had everyone cracking up, and seeing some of the people in the audience get super excited made me all the more energized. Although I can't say I would willingly go back, it made for a truly unique Texas experience. read more

The Mesquite Championship Rodeo takes place at the Resistol Arena on Friday and Saturday nights during April through September. Every seat inside the Arena has a good view of the rodeo action. Get here early if you're hungry and dig into the "all you can eat" BBQ Buffet offered by Sonny Bryan's inside the arena. There are also concession stands and a western gift shop which sells souvenirs, clothing, and cowboy hats. The Rodeo lasts about two hours and has contests such as bull & bareback riding, team roping, chuck wagon races, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, kids mutton bustin', cowboy poker, calf scramble, and cowgirl barrel races. During intermission, the "Cowboy Zamboni" tractor drives around to rake, water, and level out the dirt. The Rodeo Clown (Kenny Petet) cracks me up!! I was in Dallas with two friends looking for something to do on a Saturday night. We took an Uber out here and watched the rodeo. Our first time ever going to one. I would say that this is not my kind of thing to do but for the most part we did enjoy it. The people in the stands were very down to earth and welcoming of strangers. That was the best part. The part I didn't like was the children riding the animals. We got to an 11 year old riding a young cow and it bucked him off and stomped on him twice and the child stood up and fell back down to the ground. I wish I had not seen that. I don't think they should have children out there but the adults can make up their own minds for their safety. Anyway, overall it was a well run entertaining night. I won't do it again if there are children participating but I don't want to rank the place low as a result of one thing that I don't agree with. read more

It's very sad what has happened to the rodeo. I've been going to the rodeo since I was a kid, for over 30 years. Tonight we had a bad experience. First, adult tickets were $32. After the "governments cut" two adult tickets were $81. The lines for drinks or concessions were insanely long. The BBQ buffet is $28 per person. Waited in a beer line for 30 mins only to be told that they ran out of beer! The show itself is not what it used to be. There was no grand entry, no chuckwagon races, no Mexican Sweat. The grounds outside were overgrown and terrible looking. The lights in the parking lot weren't even turned on. Could not understand the clown. Very disappointed, the standards have certainly slipped. read more

We had a great time at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. People were wearing masks, and they're only allowing 1/2 capacity so it's safe venue if you're concerned about Covid-19. Tickets are very reasonable, and it was hilarious watching the little ones on the backs of those lambs holding on for dear life. I have been to the rodeo for years but have never had box seats before. I have never had a more miserable time than last nights box seat experience. ushers should direct you to the barn doors that are elevator. people that have never had box seats should be directed where to go instead of having to ask on the other side of the stadium. we sweated all night in the box. couldn'T hear in the Box. and when you have to buy a water at the bar because the 3 you ordered 45 minutes ago haven't arrived. we we're hungry when we got there and ordered as quickly as we could. Food didn't make it for an hour and fifteen minutes and they brought it without any utensils to get it out of the pan. just worst experience ever in a box seat. its 2 am can't sleep because I'm still mad and hurting from eating so late read more

Resistol Arena is a good place to test how well a 'city slicker' or spoiled suburbanite can handle all the the sights (there were a lotta flies on that one cow) and smells the rodeo has to offer. Don't miss it if you have the opportunity to go and get some of the Sonny Bryan's buffet while you're there too. In no particular order: Cowboy poker - Let's just say you got to have your nuts screwed on tight to just sit and wait while a pissed off bull is on a collision course with you and your table. Somehow it was mostly intact after it was all done, still tryin to figure that one out Cowgirl Barrel Racing - The horse enters the arena at full speed and the cowgirl positions, balances, and/or contorts herself in the most dangerous and difficult way possible. This got HUGE cheers all around on my last visit. The Calf Scramble - Kids gathered from everywhere start running around after a calf in an odd game of capture the flag. The picture I attached doesn't quite capture the excitement. Of course this comes right after the mutton riding, a bunch of 4 and 5 year old cowboy mini-me's in football helmets holding on to a sheep for dear life. Of course none of the bull riding, bronc riding, roping, etc are to be outdone by the other events - live entertainment in one of the best forms, someone putting their own butt on the line. Thankfully no one was hurt when I was there, but there was a close call that made my hair stand up - after the bull bucked the rider, he kicked once more and one of his rear hooves came down an inch from the guy's head. +1 for the rodeo clown's distraction. Speaking of which, it's good to have some comic relief but I'm still wondering exactly how they did this skit: The rodeo clown comes out with (supposedly) a box filled with bottles of beer. He trips, falls forward on the box, and proceeds to drink what's leaking out of the bottom corner. Then he puts the box down to open it - no bottles, no beer, but there is a dog inside ..... My FIRST Rodeo!!! Ahh, and I loved it. During the intermission my cousin and I looked up some of the cowboys on facebook to see their relationship status. :P We like how they all have real cowboy names ... Logan ... Cody ... Scooter ... even a Tuff Hardman hee hee Anyway... So the entire rodeo consisted of a bunch of different events like roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, horse riding... They had very entertaining events for the kids, like having kids ride out on this baby animals and they would fall off within 3 feet of exiting the gate. My favorite was when they let 200-300 kids loose to catch the baby cattle. That was the only time during the night the animals actually looked scared. Yeah, so I'm from the city and don't really know anything about Rodeo, but at least it was a good time :-) read more

Pretty good rodeo, for this area. Really good place for kids, lot's of events like pony riding, bull photo shoot etc. If you kid has been naughty, put him/her on a sheep and watch the sheep take off, your kid hit the ground and burst in tears! Kind of weird event but I guess it's a memory they will cherish forever! Bull riding is my favorite event which there were plenty both in the beginning and the end. Chuck wagon racing or what they called it was a pretty fun and different event. Been to a couple of other rodeo's both in Texas and Colorado and I hadn't seen anything like that before. They had one really fun event the time we went, "Whiplash", the world's smallest cowboy monkey! That was a must-see event, I hadn't seen it on TV before, either way it's more fun to see it live. The only bummer is that if you want to take good pictures, you gotta make sure you sit on the front row or perhaps really high up if you have a great lens. Really good place to take out-of-towner's to if you want to show them something really texan. I've taken other out-of-towners to the Colliseum in Fort Worth but it's not near as good and their program never seems to change. read more

An indoors arena, definitely not intended for those with severe allergies (i.e. Me! Oops!) Watched part of a rodeo and I thought it was pretty neat. One side of the arena was pretty dead and only a couple booths with some drinks, the opposite side had a ton of vendors selling drinks, cookies, etc as well as a Marine booth! We bought some mixed drinks and it concerned me because I am 23, but I was not asked for ID. I definitely do not look over the age of 40. I often get mistaken for a high school student so that was not good. Vendor employees should be asking for ID every time. The cowboys put on a good show, and though I left early, I couldn't help but applaud them all for their motivation! The security when we walked in were kind of strange and a little rude to us at first, but I brushed them off as there was not much we could do about it. The arena also has plenty of seating as well as benches in the very front for handicap, just behind the VIP groups of seating. I would recommend getting here early to get the best seating and easier access if you do in fact need to sit in the handicap area. read more

We took our in laws to the rodeo when they were in town from Florida. I had never been either so I was skeptical. I was pleasantly surprised. The show was very entertaining. At the beginning it was a little slow going from one event to the next, but thankfully as the show went on it got better and better. From a We had a great time. I highly recommend to take the family. We were in 113 and we saw everything. The arena is inside. There was saddle broncs, youth sheep riding barrel racing, and bull riding. All food and alcohol are cash only but there is an ATM inside. Confession time: I love the rodeo. This is big for me because for the majority of my life I would not get near one without the persuasion of a cattle prod. Although I admired the bravado of the cowboy athletes who competed, my perception of the sport was generally negative. I considered liking rodeo to be reactionary, provincial, even pedestrian and that Luke Perry movie didn't help. A native Texan, I liked things Western, but it had to be the cool, non-tacky Western - custom leather boots, Willie, Luckenbach, Shiner Bock, "High Plains Drifter" and the Old 97s. To a globetrotting, Gen-X, urban Samurai, rodeo fandom was beneath my contempt. But age is the great clarifier and this prejudice only inhibited me from experience. Realizing that rodeo is actually about as cool-Western as it gets, I recently slid on my Luccheses and headed east to the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. It was a blast and my 6-year-old, who actually spends much of his summer at our family ranch, was enthralled. I can list all of its merits, but here are the top three reasons to go rodeo: 1. It is the multicultural melting pot of DFW: "Nay," you say? The night I attended the audience demographic was noticeably diverse with people across the entire socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural spectrum, as well as world-class cowboys from around the globe. Mid-rodeo, an announcement was made thanking the Egyptian consulate staffers who were in attendance and there were even a handful of gay caballeros sitting behind us. (I cannot confirm 100% their sexual orientation, but with the tight T-shirts, lavender satin western cravats, suffocatingly skinny boot cuts and Village People mustaches, I am going out on the presumptive limb.) Not the crowd I expected which, of course, made it all the more interesting and enjoyable. The only glitch in the demonstration of diversity and globalism occurred during the spotlight introduction of the non-US cowboys who were competing - specifically a Canadian, a Brazilian and an Australian. First their names were called out followed by their city, state and country of origin. For the Brazilian and Canadian the emcee completed the intros unscathed, but when he got to the Aussie from Golbourn there was a hiccup. He announced the cowboy's name then "Golbourn, North-Southwest, Australia. North-Southwest, Australia? Where's that?" Then, amused with his wit, he continued, "How do you know when you're there? I bet that guy doesn't know if he's coming or going, ha, ha, ha etc, etc, etc." This lasted for about a minute with a lot of raised eyebrows and shrugged shoulders circulating Resistol Arena. No one knew what he was blathering about, especially the Aussie cowpoke. Then I looked at my program and got it. It read "Golbourn, NSW, Australia." NSW - the Australian state of New South Wales. A few minutes later, he got it too and mumbled a correction. Awesome! 2. Mutton Bustin': In short, you take a 3-8 year old, dress him/her in a Kevlar vest and helmet with a face mask, and set them onto the bare back of a woolly sheep. The shoot opens and the sheep bolts (to accompanying banjo music) with the youngster holding on for dear life. The kid that remains on for the longest time wins. Yes, it is as funny to see as it sounds. 3. The Bulls: 1.5 ton spinning, jumping and bucking juggernauts of destruction whose sole purpose is to break the body of the fools who have the temerity to try and ride them for eight seconds. On my visit only two out of ten cowboys made it and one was trampled on severely. It really is quite an accomplishment and an impressive display of athleticism and cajones. Now my friends at PETA might find this treatment of the bulls to be exploitative, but I personally feel that there is more honor living a life in the ring and the stud farm than the pen, chute and slaughterhouse. But, hey, I am also a fan of bullfighting too. So what do I know? There is also roping, barrel racing, bronco busting, and enough hokey Americana earnestness and cornpone pageantry to keep Borat Sagdiyev busy for at least another movie. Plus, the people working there are terrific - from ticket takers to vendors to ushers - all are incredibly friendly and helpful. Prices run from $11 for the cheap seats to $2000 for the luxury boxes. My recommendation is the $38 club seats on the end of the arena where they release the bulls. These put you right in front of the action and come with an all you can eat Sonny Bryan's buffet including beer and wine until 9pm. Admittedly, the food is not up to par with other SBs, but you get your chopped beef (beer and wine too) and you get to see rodeo clowns. So, it works. The rodeo is open every Friday and Saturday June through August. Doors open at 6pm and the rodeo starts at 7pm. Look for my son in the next heat mutton bustin' heat. read more

So you thought Mesquite was just a boring suburb of Dallas, hm? Just a poor little special needs kid that wants to be a cool guy? Well guess what....Mesquite may be kind of lame...but we do have the title of "Rodeo Capital of the World!" Ok...so you googled it and we're really not the Rodeo Capital of the World. However! Mesquite IS (seriously this time) the "Rodeo Capital of Texas." ....And we have a pretty darn fun Rodeo. Throw on your cowboy boots and hat and take your gal out on a Friday night for a good time. Professional cowboys and girls show off their skills every Friday and Saturday during rodeo season (whenever that is)- doing tricks and catching sad little baby cows with ropes...then clowns come out and do silly things with big angry cows...then kids run around trying to catch a pig..... Come to think of it...this is a lot of animal abuse...hmmm.. ANYWAY! It's still entertaining! And cheap! The stadium seating is that of a high school football field- your ass rests uncomfortably against a metal bench for 2 or 3 hours, but that's my only complaint. Oh! I also went here for an intimate night with ThreeDogNight! The acoustics were pretty good and the arena is small enough to make it a cozy setting for a music event. Took our 5 year old daughter here - it was the first rodeo for both her and the BH. My daughter gave it 2 thumbs up and said she'd like to go back tomorrow :-) We called ahead for tickets and paid extra to sit down front. It worked out well for our daughter since she is short but the bars protecting the audience partially got in the way of the view for the BH and me. We were in the second row but I'm not sure the front row would have been much better. I think the first row or two of the cheaper seats are probably a better place to sit. All the staff we had contact with from phone reservation right up until we exited the event went out of their way to be friendly and put on a genuinely happy face. This always makes events more fun especially for kids. We didn't eat at the rodeo but the BBQ sure smelled good. Miller Lite was a bit expensive at $5 for a none-to-large plastic cup and was not that cold either. The popcorn and cotton candy, on the other hand, were excellent :-) The rodeo starts with a bang quite literally with some flash bang action and small fireworks. The cowboys are not the best but are professional and put on a good show. Lance Kelly, who was on last season's Toughest Cowboy, participated in several events and apparently lives in the Dallas area now. The bucking events are always exciting and seeing the barrel racing up close was cool too - those gals are flying at the finish! There are two kid-friendly events around intermission. One is mutton riding where the little ones, who volunteer of course, suit up and ride muttons in a sort of non-bucking bucking event. The second is open to all the kids and is called the dash for cash. All the kids, and there were LOTS of kids, go into the arena to chase a calf the winner being the one who pulls the flag from its tale. Lots of work for the short-legged set. The audience was a combination of families and various groupings of adults on dates or group outings. As far as I could tell all were having a good time. If you go know that the bucking events are at one end of the arena and roping events are at the other. Pick your seats accordingly. read more

What a super fun place to take out-of-town guests! We went to the rodeo on a Saturday night and had a great time. I didn't really know what to expect, but I was very impressed. The evening not only included bull riding, cattle roping, and barrel racing, but it also included some comedy, a salute to the troops, and fun activities for the kiddos. I wouldn't recommend spending the extra money for the VIP seats because they really aren't that much better than the regular seats. And, definitely take a jacket because it's cold inside, especially when it's hot outside. read more

The largest section of cowboy hats in the audience was a huge group of Asian tourists. SO FUNNY. 3. The rodeo dummy that was put out and gored by several bulls and mocked by the entire audience was nicknamed Hillary Clinton. I think that only happens in Texas. 4. They basically mocked all non-Texas residents and had the residents stand up and gleefully proclaim our superiority. My liberal Aussie friend who was visiting sank in her seat in disbelief. 5. The possibility of blood and gore during the bull-riding is a total crowd mesmerizer. We didn't see any gore, but one guy was thrown into the crowd. 6. Gotta love it when the advertisements at such a dangerous sport include insurance and medical centers, as well as a sign for a sign company,that was really badly made. 7. There are actually a few real cowboys in the crowd, complete with wrinkles, aged boots, wranglers, and flannel shirts. However, it's really not THAT exciting, some of it is sort of lame and the crowd is pretty thin. It's a good activity for a family, it's pretty cheap, and it was great for us to take visitors who are absolutely shocked by Texas culture. read more

Great place to bring your kids for a wholesome evening of entertainment. Full disclosure: My daughter has been riding horses for 10 years and competing for 6, so she was able to appreciate what we saw a lot more than I was. Having said that, we both had a great time watching the young men riding and roping and the young ladies doing the barrels (always my favorite, as I am always amazed at how fast they can maneuver). There is an optional BBQ meal available or stands with beer, burgers, sodas, snacks. Tip: before the show begins, go have a look at the stock that will compete. Good value, good time. :) read more

What an amazing establishment!!!!!! This is a great place to come with the entire family for a good time. A country boy at heart.. This is the site for championship rodeo.. Texas grown 2000lb beasts looking to destroy anything in their paths for the last 50yrs. The barrel racing, calf roping, watching the kids ride the sheep. The historical aspect added to the excitement of each event throughout the season. There's a certain amount of electricity in the crowd that's southing to the soul. The addition of CIF championship indoor football coming in 2016 and the Mesquite Marshals gives me the esteemed pleasure of meeting greeting representing and adopting the good people of Mesquite, Texas. The annual Guns 'n Hoses Charity Boxing Tournament brought me to the Mesquite Rodeo's Resistol Arena last night. I hadn't been to the rodeo in years upon years... it's really much smaller than I remember, and that was surprising. As far as arenas go, it was laid out just as I expected with bleacher seating and box seating on both sides. I wasn't a huge fan of the lack of appropriate signage to find your seating section; we walked around the arena twice before I knew what was happening. How hard could it be to find section A? Apparently very if you're not paying attention completely. I don't consider myself directionally challenged but this has me thinking otherwise. The beer stand only accepted cash; but I'm not sure that is always the case. Fortunately, the arena has ATMs to accommodate those people like myself who seldom carry cash. The restrooms are fairly easy to find and are relatively clean. I think the sink area in the ladies' room needs more soap dispensers and those Xcelerator hand dryers to prevent massive paper towel clutter. read more

What a fun family event. We had a blast from a grandmother (pushing 90) all the way to the teen. It was a blast. Yes, a little over priced and I'm a little sad how short the season is now, but we had fun. Handicapped parking is a pain so if you want those spots you need to arrive early. read more
