Used to be a great practice until it was sold to Luxottica and we had to leave. Optometrist was very nice. The sale may be good for the optometrists, but it's completely changed the patient experience. You notice it immediately. The staff are highly concerned about insurance before they even say hello, non-covered charges, and now try to push the sale of their own frames and lenses - which was the first time we experienced this. Front desk office staff, and the "manager," seem overwhelmed on the phone, and in-person. They can be heard complaining about patients, speaking about patients while they're on the phone and forget to put you on hold, and/or in-person. There is no upper level management accountability. Luxottica is a large company, but nobody in the office knows how, or where, to get the contact information for Luxottica. This makes it convenient for them, so that a patient may not escalate billing and/or patient questions/concerns. There is no transparency, and absent owner accountability, since it apparently all starts and ends with the front desk staff. read more

Dr. Handell was very nice to my wife but the Optometry practice ITSELF is a sham. They told her she needed new glasses when there was no significant change from the glasses they dispensed six months earlier. They had her insurance information on file but did not submit it. They charged her over $600 for glasses she did not need. BE VERY WARY WHEN YOU GO TO THEM!! I've been a patient of Dr. Schoenbart's for years. I wear daily contact lenses, and last weekend I suddenly ran out. Needed contacts quick because my glasses don't fit too well (need a new pair). Looked on 1-800-Contacts and Coastal, and my brand runs for about $75 a box, and I needed 8 boxes for the year. Dr. Schoenbart got them for me at $10 less per box! That's $80 in my pocket! I have been going here for about 2-3 yrs....only reason I love it is for Dr. Handell, she gives me the impression that she cares and actually reviews your record, she is very thorough in her examination and gives you all the information you need, and more. Reason for my 4 star review is because I recently went again and when I requested my appointment I asked for her as usual, and I was given confirmation. The day of my appointment I get there and after almost a 45 min waiting, I am told she is not there and if it was ok to see somebody else -after waiting that long well I wasn't going to take off from work again, so yeah I guess, thank god Dr. Schoenbart was also very caring, and energetic! I absolutely love the docs at this practice, I have recommended it to my close ones, I do know they do not take all insurances, so it is always good to give them a call to check. read more

Dr. Schoenbart does a great job understand how you use your eyes. What I mean by that is he asked me what I do for work, what I do for fun, and how I need my eyes fixed. I work at a desk and stare at a computer screen all day. I need prescription for distance when I drive and go flying. I don't need it too much for tv. I also bike ride and play hockey often and wear contacts for that. I told him my eyes get kind of dry at the end of the day, but are ok when I sweat so the contacts do bother me later in the day. He gave me better contacts than my previous doctor and then for my most recent check up he gave me even better contacts. He's always trying to improve my vision and make me comfortable. He does a great job checking eye health. Dr. Schoenbart did eye exams that I've never had done before and I feel confident that my eyes are very healthy. I highly recommend him. His office is never very busy. The waits are minimal and the service is outstanding. read more

Susan Fisher has an excellent practice and i would recommend her to anyone (and have). There is on occasion a short wait, but well worth it because Dr. Fisher gives each patient the time they need and listens attentively to their concerns. She is very thorough and follows up or refers to specialists when she thinks it's necessary. Dr. Fisher on a number of occasions had identified issues with my eyes that needed further examination. This includes when I came in with intense pain when blinking. Turns out I have dry (very) eyes and needed a specialist to manage the symptoms. No more pain! Then there was the time I called, rather panicky, to say that it was absolutely raining INSIDE my car. I stopped 3 times while driving to check the roof. Well, it wasn't raining in my car! It was my introduction to "floaters" that can appear in older eyes, particularly in your peripheral vision. Again, had thorough check- up of retinas which are ok but need to be watched. Finally, Dr. Fisher identified a divergence of my eyes at close range and I am now doing vision therapy (a specialty of her practice) to train my eyes to focus together at close distances. None of these things might happen to you(!), but I love feeling like I'm in such capable hands. And by the way, the staff is terrific and very caring. Make an appointment today! read more

Not happy with the place. I was told when I bought my glasses that the lenses were under warranty for a year for scratches. Well I went back with my nicked up lenses and they said they could not honor the warranty. They also tried to charge my wife $700 for glasses for my daughter and when my wife expressed her displeasure they dropped the price $120. Beware!!!!! My friend recommended Schoenbart Vision and I've been seeing them for about a year. They've always been very helpful and thorough. I recently had an urgent issue with my eye while traveling, and Dr. Schoenbart called me back at 11:30pm to discuss what I should do and helped me to find eye doctors in San Francisco. They are always very prompt with calling back, they are easy to reach when I call the office, and they use email which makes life easier. I was a patient here for many years, and didn't start having problems with them up until last year. I had made an appointment to get new glasses, went, and picked out a pair that was completely out of my price range (their glasses are very expensive, all designer brands). I desperately needed glasses so I called two weeks asking for my prescription so I could go elsewhere for a frame I could afford. The receptionist (Dianna I believe it was) told me if she gave me my prescription, I'd no longer be a patient there, I said fine and asked for the prescription, and then she hung up. Never got the prescription. Fast forward a year without glasses, I scheduled an appointment with Dr Handell (who is impossible to see) and I had waited two weeks to see her, had to reschedule due to work, and then they told me I'd have to wait another two weeks to see her. At that point I was already annoyed so just chose to cancel my insurance and everything there. I now go to Vision Works and have been much more pleased there. Don't bother going to this place, it's in garden city, which explains the expensive glasses. read more

HORRIBLE service! Made a follow up appointment for my son six months in advance. A week before his appointment they call to reschedule for whatever reason... Fine. A week before his rescheduled appointment they call again to reschedule. Fine. A few days before his now twice rescheduled appointment I received the text to confirm his upcoming appointment. I confirm. The day of his appointment we get to the office and they tell us that the doctor is out an that we'll have to reschedule again. Total B.S. I have been wearing prescription glasses for 47 years and Dr. Schoenbart is by far the best optometrist I have ever seen. Over the years, my prescription has become more complicated as my eyes have changed and Dr. Schoenbart spent time with me to come up with the best optical solution to meet my needs for reading vision, computer vision, as well as distance vision. I have been a patient as well as my family for years. They used to be good. No longer. I purchased new frames and had my prescription for new glasses. Not only was I sold all of the bells and whistles for Varilux, scratch resistant etc and designer frames for nearly $1,000.00. When I got them and put them on they were not fit properly. The lenses were not only fit improperly but I was sold a bill of goods. I went back and had them adjusted they were still wrong. I went to another highly recommended competitor West and Stannish also in Garden City. When I had them look at the lenses I was told that I was sold an inferior product and that the measurements were completely wrong. West and Stannish fixed the problem at less than what this guy charged me. The same problem occurred with a relative as well. Measurements were wrong and they were also sold the wrong lens at the higher price. Apparently they are in the business to sell high priced frames. I will never go back to them. read more

I currently live in Costa Rica and needed a Low Vision Device specialist in the New York area where my family lives. I googled for low vision device services and there are very few in New York, but Dr. Schoenbart came up as the one with best reviews. I got in touch by phone and made an appointment with Tony who was most helpful in the process of getting my ophthalmologist diagnosis to the doctor and all needed for my appointment. She was always very kind in her treatment and I appreciated that very much. Dr. Schoenbart is very knowledgeable on low vision problems and made a very thorough examination of my eyes. He also asked about my needs to improve my daily vision needs and I felt he was a caring doctor. Since one of the glasses I needed usually takes one to two weeks to be ready, he took personal interest in getting my glasses on time so I could have them with me to return to Costa Rica. Reason why I only gave a 4 star review is because the administrative process does not include giving one a receipt disclosing clearly what one is paying for and since these are very expensive glasses one needs to know exactly if one is receiving what one is paying for. When asked for the receipt the administrative people were visibly annoyed and even though I got the disclosure upon my insistence, what I got was not clear as to what was included for each pair of glasses to arrive at a total cost per pair. To this day I do not know what was included. Also I recommend that patients receive such information before actually ordering the devices so one can make better decisions on the options available. This I offer as constructive criticism because I feel sure Dr. Schoenbart is always looking for ways to improve the services his office offers. read more
