Been twice. NEVER GOING BACK! Worst waitress ever. Decided…read moreto give it another try since Elgin has no other breakfast/brunch dining choices. First time NO COFFEE....waitress laughed and said coffee machine broke. The food was served cold and bland; nothing special. Waitress never came around to see if we needed anything. Finally had to get up and go to counter to ask for assistance. Twice now the waitress either ignored us or was blind to us being there. Second time our food must have sat out waiting to be served and was cold and obviously dried out. Waitress was too busy chatting it up with another table, served three other tables that came in after us, talking on phone all whilst we sat ignored and waited ...watched ....waited ....waited and waited while our food sat waiting to be picked up and brought to our table. Absolutely unacceptable. Waitress needs training.

Unfortunately, this visit just wasn't it. We were greeted and told to sit anywhere, which was fine. A server came by to take our drink order, only to let us know they were out of both drinks we originally wanted. No big deal--we pivoted. But then my sweet tea came with Splenda and no spoon to stir it, and silverware never made an appearance at all. What really sealed it, though, was the service--or lack of it. Another server spent close to 20 minutes chatting with a table about something completely unrelated to the restaurant while we sat there unnoticed. During that time, three separate parties were seated after us and were promptly given menus, silverware, and attentive service. We were never checked on again. After sitting there watching everyone else be taken care of, it became pretty clear we weren't going to be served that day. So we got up and left. I always hate sharing experiences like this because I truly want local businesses to succeed. But service matters just as much as the food, and sadly, this visit missed the mark entirely.

Southern Mama's is back. There are two other reviews on Southern Mama's, both saying the…read morerestaurant is closed for good. They have reopened with more space and now have switched things to a buffet style restaurant. We had a party of six go today for lunch. Their hours are now from Friday - Sunday, 11AM - 8PM, and offer a full buffet )$18.95) or a Meat & Three or Meat & Two options. You can also order alacarte if you desire. They had a huge selection..Fried Chicken, Chicken with bacon, Brisket slices, Fried Pork tenderloins, Collards, green beans, lima beans, corn, black eyed peas, mash potatoes/gravy, banana pudding and peach cobbler along with a full salad bar. I've probably left off several things. Needless to say there's quite a selection. I tried a fried chicken breast. It was very good, crispy and not dry. Went well with the mashed potatoes and brown gravy. The collards and green beans were also good. I wasn't a big fan of the brisket. It was hard to cut with the knife that they'd given me, but it did have a good taste. I probably wouldn't order that again. I also didn't care for the peach cobbler as much as I usually do. The salad bar had two types of lettuce and quite a large choice for dressings. They also had a broccoli salad which was very runny and not as good as I would've thought. The lighting could be improved over the buffet items as it was hard to tell what some of them were. They had signs in front of the items on the glass but not everything was listed..having to ask what many were. I was a big fan of Southern Mama's at the other smaller site where they served regular sit-down and order from the menu. The buffet format just didn't impress me as much. You move down the line and the staff would take your tray and load it with whatever you picked. Then you sit at a table and the waitress will bring you your drink and often checks on you to see if you need anything else. Service was good. The opinion from my friends: Four of us had chicken. Two of us liked it, two didn't. The vegetables and sides were all good. The beets from the salad bar were just so-so, not great. Broccoli salad wasn't popular with two of us. I don't know if I'd go back for the buffet. I'd prefer to order just the chicken, mashed potatoes and Gravy as a meal. From what I've heard it can get busy on a Sunday. We arrived at 11:30 (Saturday) and there was plenty of room, but by 12:30 it was starting to build up a line to get in.

Not too many tables in the main room (I think maybe 6 or so) and they have the Company store side apparently for banquets. Still have the old screen porch that you could eat at but today nobody was out there. They are open for lunch and dinner. Friday and Saturday nights til 9:00 PM. The menu surprised me. They have a good assortment of starters - fried pickles, fried okra, hush puppies, and more. I ordered the BBQ pork on Texas Toast, Fries and Cole Slaw with unsweetened ice tea. Everything was excellent. Big Al's BBQ sauce was very good. Almost like a combination of North Carolina and Tomato based...not sure, but very good. My wife and I both liked the sauce. It's not thick and was served in a sqeeze bottle. The Cole slaw was great. Not your typical Cole slaw that is sweet. My wife took a bite of my sandwich and cole slaw and loved both of them. She ordered a quarter chicken dinner. It came with three sides and she chose salad with Vinegariette dressing, green beans, and the hash and rice (she said mainly so I could try it). The chicken was great. Quarter chicken with wing and very moist. The green beans were perfect. I like the southern style green beans - my wife likes the al dente. These were my style. The BBQ Hash and rice was also very good. Her dinner also was served with a regular bread roll. The waitress was very prompt in seating us and taking the order. We were served in probably 5-7 minutes after ordering. Very fast. We'll definitely go back. They currently don't have beer or wine but have put in for their license. RIght now they do not have any fish or shrimp on the menu but are looking to add shrimp and a low country boil in the near future. It's a nice ride out to Rembert and a great little trip from NE Cola for a relaxing lunch or dinner. Try it...you'll like it.

I have eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner at the boykin mill store and I have yet to be disappointed. It's a country store with yellow grits lining the shelves (for sale) that are from the mill across the street. The grits are served with many meals, but my favorite is the shrimp and grits. There are a variety of different items to choose from. Along with the food and atmosphere, comes the staff. They make you feel special and very welcomed and will make you feel like fanily. I love this place and would recommend it to all ages!! I'm going tonight for dinner, to relax and have a beer and listen to some good ol boys play some good ol music! Which by the way, play just loud enough.
