Dustin shown here with my contribution to the wall of shame junk extinguishers (on the shelf above).

I am not - nor will I ever be - a Damsel in Distress. After weeks of news about natural and man-made disasters, I decided to do myself and my homies a favor and get my act together with this stuff. I signed up for the 28 hour course to become a member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which is backed by FEMA. Among many other things, I learned that all three of the fire extinguishers at my home didn't_work_anymore. Their efficacy had not only expired... it was defunct. Yikes. It is about 50% cheaper to have your fire extinguisher recharged at Longhorn Fire and Safety than to buy a new fire extinguisher. And fire extinguishers do need to be recharged or at least maintained every 6 or 7 years. Years ago, fire stations would recharge your extinguishers for free, but that's no longer the case. Matt and Dustin at Longhorn are super informative, accessible and resourceful people. They'll help you figure out what's best for you and where/how you should store your extinguisher(s). FYI... Non-rechargeable fire extinguishers must be replaced with a new unit every 12 to 20 years depending on the manufacturer. Also, those little fire extinguishers that so many of us have won't help much, if at all. Stay safe, y'all. I mean that.

After shopping online for a fire extinguisher for my home shop, I was left with more questions than answers.

This is Simpson's HQ, but there's also a store. That store has impressed me in nuuuuumerous ways…read moreover the years. They only do Simpson and related companies (such as Hans), but if you know you want something they sell, they really stand by those products. Simpson's gear off-the-rack is a bit more amply-cut than many of the European brands, so admittedly, I just have a helmet and a Hans device from them 'cause I'm a sorta little person. I'm fairly certain they do custom sizes if you've got different proportions and really like something they make, though. Anyway, on to the glowing review. I found a manufacturing defect in my helmet, gosh, a year or two after I had it. Part of the carbon fiber had become delaminated at a point on one of the ripples on the right side. I'm used to seeing scuffs from me being a doofus on the left side and top of the helmet as I get out of my car, but the right side is an odd one. I don't get nearly enough time riding along with other people anymore, so I didn't know if there was a flaw or if I was an idiot in someone else's car one day. I brought it in just in case (the week of a race I was trying to do, no less) and sure enough--it looked like there was an issue in how the mold was releasing there, and it wasn't coating that point evenly with the rest of the helmet. They looked at it overnight and determined the next day "yep, this was on our end." I got a replacement, no questions asked, no charge, and I even got to look over the new helmet to make sure there wasn't the same defect. So far, it hasn't had the same issue. Success! (Bonus: they also recommended great German food in town after my helmet got fixed. The staff is super-nice, and New Braunfels rules.) I also wanted to get my Hans device recertified a while ago--and remembered this the week of a race. Oops. They totally came through with new padding, grippy material and everything super-fast. They seem to get the whole "I have a race this week, I should've done this a month ago, and I'm a moron--please help?" timeline, and totally come through to save my bacon. I'd also recently noticed that my helmet was slipping down into my face more often recently. This happens: padding gets sweaty and breaks down over time. Mine's coated in about eighteen layers of sweat and is probably structurally about 80% sweat-salt at this point. I wanted another visor for it anyway, so I brought it in and asked if they made maybe an extra pad or a thicker cheek-piece to bring the fit back to new. Instead of selling me directly into a full pad-replacement (which was over a hundred bucks), they added in some extra padding for free, and it worked. My helmet no longer falls down in my face. Even if you've purchased their stuff elsewhere (my Hans device was actually bought used), they do a ridiculously great job of standing by their products. If you ever have issues with any of their gear, it's worth the ~40m drive from Austin to deal with them directly.
