Dr. Heather Coubrough told me that I had a severely misaligned jaw and that any caps or veneers I put on would "Pop right off" the solution was a 15K mouth brace. I am middle-aged and have never heard that. I was of course very worried. But, she also told me I had 3 cavities. Both of these she told me she could tell just by looking. Well, I definitely don't have 3 cavities. I had just got a cleaning and check-up from a great dentist and I felt no pain biting down even on sweet things. I went to a 3rd dentist for a 3rd opinion and he was able to do the work that Dr. Heather Coubrough said would "Pop right off" if I did not get the expensive mouth brace. And he did amazing work for a lot less cost. I feel that Dr. Heather Coubrough wasted my time and money. When I emailed her about my experience with the 3rd dentist she doubled down on how bad my jaw is and refused to give me or my insurance company a refund. In addition to that, she booked a cleaned for me even though I told her several times that my first dentist does my cleanings. I went to Longo since my dentist does not do every type of dentistry and recommended Dr. Longo. She was not available so I saw Heather Coubrough instead. Maria Lourdes Longo is like my Kevin Bacon. By chance, an ever-growing group of my close friends and acquaintances just happen to go to Longo, and many of us only figured that out when simultaneously referring her to friends who ask what dentist we use. I've been going to her for seven years and think she's just great, as are all of the people who work with her. They are all very thorough, considerate, focused on preventative care and they'll even feed your meter for you. My only tip would be to book the first appointment of the day, or tack on an extra half hour for your later-in-the-day visits because her appointments run over on occasion. I have been going to Longo Dental for ten years, and that includes when I've been living in other states. I get back to Boston enough that it is worth it to me to see them whenever I can. From the wonderful staff who greet people and help with tangly insurance issues, to the care and precise attention to detail of the dental hygienists and doctors, everyone is wonderful. read more

Dr. Longo and her staff have been taking care of my oral health for 12 years now. Her practice was originally recommended to me by a coworker at the time. It was great advice! I've been extremely happy with Dr. Longo and her staff. When I first went to her I was petrified, having not been to the dentist in 15 or so years, and in not great oral health. She took very good care of me then and her and her staff have been doing so ever since. Dr. Longo will explain as much as you want or care to know. She takes care and time with each patient and seems to take great pride in explaining things to you. She and her staff are also very careful if you have sensitive teeth, gums, etc. they are very accommodating and caring. Dr. Longo is very conservative when it comes to surgeries, extractions, root canals, crowns, etc. Dr. Longo has earned my full trust. She has not steered me wrong once. I've never had any unnecessary surgeries or procedures and my preventative health advice and carehas all been gold-star caliber! A side benefit is that I understand so much more about my mouth and teeth and gums since going to Dr. Longo, because she takes the time to explain these things and her "bedside manner" is excellent. She is very easy to talk with and a natural communicator. There is no assembly-line dentistry here; each patient is given very good, individualized care -- that is for sure. The biggest issue for a new patient might just be obtaining an initial appointment with Dr. Longo. She seems to be extremely busy (I need to book pretty far in advance). I don't know if she is taking on new patients. She hired another dentist at least a year ago, so there is another dentist there who Longo hired herself. The most important thing about a dentist, in my opinion, is trust. Perhaps that's why I never liked this place. Not five minutes after I got there on my first appointment were they telling me all the things that were wrong with my jaw (TMJ disorder). This doesn't line up, that doesn't look right, etc. I don't have now, nor have I ever had, any jaw pain. I felt like they were pushing high-cost jaw services I didn't need. They said I was heading down a road of jaw problems if I didn't seriously look into it soon. A few cleanings later, I decided to leave, just not trusting them. I started seeing a new dentist and what do you know, he said nothing about my jaw. Somehow I also manage to chew and get food down, but Longo Dental would have me believe I'd soon starve if I didn't take them up on their TMJ services. Thanks, but no thanks. read more

Dr. Longo is the nicest dentist I have ever experienced. I felt like she was an old friend of mine almost right away. She's an expert at connecting inter-personaly with patients and this helps me feel at ease. The office is clean. The staff is friendly. Sadly her office won't take my insurance anymore so I have to go elsewhere. I will miss Dr. Longo! I recommend her without hesitation. read more

Dr. Maria Longo, DMD, is remarkable in her expertise,  in her focus on what is important, and her techniques.  For example,  keeping up with technology Recently I  had anesthesia ( for one molar ), provided by  guided computer technology.  She has the ability to have the wider perspective about the patient as a person.  Also  about how the specific work she is about to do fits into the broader perspective of the patient's total mouth health.  Dr. Longo's referral to an outstanding periodontist, Dr. Milagros Serrano, is also improving my challenges.    Dr. Longo's staff is attentive, well informed, helpful.  In addition I recently had the privilege to be treated by  her  at the same time hearing her teaching a new assistant.  Impressive how Dr. Longo kept her focus on my mouth, while diligently coaching.   It is exactly as an excellent University Medical Center teaches.   I moved to Boston 3 years ago, most of my doctors are at Tufts.   I am also familiar with teaching models because I have been Ph.D. faculty in a medical school in another city for 50 years.   She could easily be faculty in a Dental School of her choice. I've been going to Maria Lourdes Longo for around 5 years and have been very happy with treatment. I have a low pain tolerance and a nerve in a weird place and when I had a huge filling that needed to go in after the removal of an impacted wisdom tooth, she took extra time to make sure I had enough novocaine in the right spot. The staff is pleasant and efficient - just be sure to have insurance, it's not cheap! read more

I'm been going to Dr Longo since she first started out, now the whole family goes. She and her staff are the best.

I would not recommend Dr. Longo, and I agree with John K, regarding trust, because I had almost the exact same experience. I have never had a cavity, and went to Dr. Longo for a routine checkup. During a followup visit Dr. Longo recommended drilling and filling in two locations. Being wary I decided to get a second opinion. The second opinion from another Dr. found no need for any drilling or filling. Fast forward 5 years, and I am still cavity free. I also feel that Dr. Longo tries to push expensive procedures in the name of preventative medicine. I tried to tell her I wanted to skip the X-Rays on my first visit, and it literally turned into a 15 minute lecture on why I absolutely had to have X-Rays. Meanwhile, my new Dr. didn't even mention X-Rays until the second visit, and when I told him I wanted to skip the X-Ray, there wasn't even a discussion. Initially, I went to Dr. Longo because my wife had been a patient for about 18 months. And in those 18 months, she had recommended refilling all of my wife's cavities, because they were coming loose, and also suggested my wife was suffering from TMJ. In hindsight, a second opinion for her probably would have been a good idea. read more

I went to Dr. Longo for a second opinion after a questionable experience with another dentist. I find her to be thoroughly professional as well as caring about her patients. She never does anything before making sure I understand what she's about to do. I trust her; the dentist I had gone to before I went to Dr. Longo told me I needed nearly $10,000 worth of work done. Dr. Longo told me I was fine except for two minor procedures, coming to about $700. The staff is pleasant and friendly, and the waiting room is comfortable. I highly recommend Dr. Longo. read more

Overall experience and competencies of staff outside of the actual dental services were terrible. It took me several phone calls and conversations with the front desk technician, who proved to be unhelpful and unresponsive, to rectify a billing situation. After speaking with an insurance representative, they provided services that were above and beyond which were needed so they could bill the premium of the insurance, and which was not covered, but would have been if they didn't use a cosmetically appealing filling. I was told that my insurance billing information was going to be sent to my house, so I could contact them about the services that were provided, and I never received it. However, the monthly statements continued to roll in without the information needed to contact insurance for coverage and/or reasons why the services were not covered after being explicitly told by the dentist that it was certainly preventative and would be covered. One week later, after speaking to the secretary, I have NOT received a phone call from their manager, which I asked for in writing when giving them my billing information prior to handeling this matter in court. read more

This is a review of Dr. Longo herself, not the other staff. In particular, about a year ago, Dr. Longo recommended I should go to Dr. Gerald Fine (see also my review on him!). After I had a horrible experience with Dr. Fine, I went back to Dr. Longo and told her all about it. She acted appropriately horrified. However, a year later, this morning, I went back to Dr. Longo, and she acted like she had no memory whatsoever about the issues I had raised with her regarding Dr. Fine. I was very disgusted to see she still has the blue pad of referral paper to give people referrals to Dr. Fine. Again I told her the issues I had with Dr. Fine and again she acted horrified, but she did NOT go over and grab her blue pad of paper and throw it in the trash, which would have been the really appropriate thing to do. While the dentist was great, I found the administrative staff frustrating. I had filled out all the forms online but when I arrived, one of the women at the front desk brought me the forms on an iPad. When I told her I'd already filled them out, she opened the forms for the first time and noted they had in fact all been filled out. Since the dentist was supposed to review and sign the forms, this delayed things unnecessarily. When I was leaving, the second woman at the front desk took my credit card and told me the cost would be over $550. Since they had all of my insurance information and had for several days, I assumed that meant they did not take my insurance but I decided to ask anyway. The woman responded, "Oh, you have insurance" to which I responded, "yes, all the information is in the forms I filled out several days ago." Again a delay while they checked, copied my insurance card and then charged not $550 but $85 (not even sure how that was calculated). I feel if you ask that forms including insurance be filled out, you should check those forms before you ask a customer for payment. I very nearly paid over $450 more than I owed. read more

I was a long-time patient of Dr Longo's (1998-2013) who adored her for the qualities all the other reviewers have mentioned. I recommended her to everyone I could and many of my friends (and once I married, my husband) became her patients. However, I became concerned that as a doctor she wasn't serving my dental needs as well as she was my experience/comfort/education needs. When I had my regular check-up with Dr. Longo's new partner on a day that Dr. Longo was unavailable, she expressed unqualified alarm at the lack of action taken to solve my grinding/TMJ problems, suggesting that there was much that could and should have been done in the long lead-up to what had became an extremely painful problem. I immediately saw another dentist for a second opinion (Dr. Backman) who identified and solved the problem on the spot during my first visit. The pain that had been increasing over the numerous years I'd been seeing Dr. Longo disappeared within the week. I couldn't believe it. Unfortunately, a friend who I recommended to Dr. Longo wasn't as fortunate. She had a long series of procedures recommended by Dr. Longo that made her problems worse. Concerned after a year of procedures, she also sought a second opinion, which led her to switch dentists. I am a big fan of Dr. Longo as a person and wish all doctors could engage and explain as well as she does. However, in the end I worry for us all who really want to trust that she is taking just as good care of our long-term health.
