Buyer beware. Their system of payment/reimbursement is fakakta. Patient pays, then HSD files the claim, then patient is reimbursed... but if insurance doesn't pay what HSD files, then patient is SOL. HSD didn't file my claim for two months after the visit, and then only bc I called to follow up. Insurance (good insurance, through employer) paid less than 1/4 of the amount. HSD could have looked me up in the system to see what would be covered; obviously they did not. It feels scammy. Stay away. read more

I was interested in scheduling a first time visit for a simple cleaning. My coverage was out of network and I asked what the price for a simple cleaning would be. They quoted me that first time visits are $385. Needless to say, I was shocked. I'm no medical expert but I did some research on what cleanings/first time visits and even comprehensive cleanings should cost. Simple cleanings shouldn't be more than $100. Comprehensive shouldn't be more than $200. It stinks, as the location for this spot cannot be beat for me personally. Price gouging. Pure and simple. read more

Dr. Foley pulled a large wisdom tooth out of my head, and I did not feel any pain. Like nada. I took Advil because he told me that was an option. (He also wrote me a prescription for codeine, just in case, but I did not need it.) I didn't need ANY pills the next morning. I have finally found my soul dentist. I will tell everyone I know to go to see Dr. Foley for all their dental needs! More health care professionals need to be like him, and more offices need to have people that care for their patients like this one does. read more

I am the type of person that dreads going to the dentist. We all have the same expectations; there will be a long awkward wait before an old guy in a white coat hacks and slashes around your mouth while there is horrible elevator music playing softly in the background. I can't believe I am saying this but I loved my experience there. The staff is very friendly, welcoming and make you feel like they genuinely care about you. Now, isn't that the way it has always supposed to feel? Liz at the front was such a joy to talk to that I didn't even realize that people were ready for me. The rest of the staff carry the same high level of professional but more importantly the highest level of care I have experienced in a healthcare environment. Now I haven't even gotten to Dr. Foley yet. Dr. Foley breaks the conventional mold of what I have always thought of when it comes to dentists. He is not some older, lab-coat wearing, suction straw wielding, heavy breathing guy poking and prodding you. He is a younger gentleman who seems to really enjoy talking to and getting to know his patients. He is extremely knowledge and takes the necessary time to explain things and better educate his patients. I really feel like I learn a whole lot more from him when I go in. For somebody who is going to be so close to you, it's good to know that he cares and is not just going about his day. I have had good doctor's and decent dentists before but never one good enough to actually rave about him to friends and co-workers. I am lucky enough to have one now. You really can't go wrong getting dental advice and care from Dr. Foley and his team. If I could write a wish list for everything I would want in a dental care provider, Harvard Street Dental would have it all, including Florence and the Machine and the Black Keys playing on the speakers while I was there. read more

I had my first dental appointment in 10 years at Harvard Street dental. The excellent reviews are 100% true and they deserve all of the praise they receive here on Yelp. I was very concerned that I would be chastised for not seeking dental care. Both the lovely hygienist, Lucy, and Dr. Foley were very kind to me, especially after I explained why I hadn't been since I was a child. Their office has great technology. The digital x-rays were a little unpleasant (to be expected) but the outcome was really cool. You can see all of the scans on their computer and they really took the time to explain the results to me. They also make use of short videos on the computer to show you how any problems with your teeth came to be. These aren't just the typical how to brush/floss videos, but actual detailed explanations and visuals of the specific dental problem. My only complaint is that they are so successful that it's hard to get an appointment. I had to wait several months, but after 10 years, I figured a few months wouldn't hurt. Definitely worth the wait. I should also mention that they told me the cost of their custom whitening trays is only $220. This is a very reasonable price that you won't find at most dentists in the area. Dr. Foley said "I am not looking to nickel and dime my patients" and I definitely believe it. Also worth mentioning is that they are very transparent about the pricing of their procedures. Once you request specific treatments (e.g. fillings, mouth guard) they check with your insurance and you receive an estimate in the mail in advance. Dr. Foley and his team are awesome. I had two fillings done today, got numbed up in two areas, and didn't feel anything in either of them. I was pretty nervous for a week up to this appointment cause they don't use nitrous, but it wasn't a problem at all. Dr. Foley used numbing gel before the shots, and I barely felt anything. The filings themselves went the same way. As long as you can deal with fingers and instruments in your mouth, it's totally fine. Something else they're great at is explaining what's going on in your mouth to you. They have videos and illustrations that explain things like plaque buildup and how to floss correctly, which is really helpful if you actually want an education about your dental care. Overall I'm really glad I went with them for my first checkup and dental work in three years. read more

Dr. Foley told me that I must do a root-canal. Based on "his test", the root was dead, which turned out not to be true. 5 years later and that tooth is still doing just fine without any root-canal ever needed, nor any trouble with it... now I have doubts if I really needed the filling that he did for me before that, as the other dentists did not make the same recommendations. yes the office is nice and clean and modern... the hygienists are super nice. but go there if you like him drilling your teeth for no good reason. Always ask for a second opinion. He is not a dentist I would trust. read more

I got a night guard for bruxism from Harvard Street Dental and my experience was fantastic. Dr. Foley began by explaining the guard he uses and what the fitting process would be, and in two appointments I had my night guard and at a price that was 40% less expensive than other dentists I had called. Dr. Foley spent time and was careful to make sure my night guard fit correctly. The real win here though, is how wonderful having the night guard has been. I sleep better now because of the guard. Dr. Foley cares about the potential health problems with my teeth, instead of just cleaning them. During my first teeth cleaning, he found that one tooth of mine is having a short root. Before meeting him, I went teeth cleaning at other places, and never heard about that. Later I started orthodontics treatment. I really like Dr. Foley and the entire staff. No one likes going to the dentist, but they make the experience as pleasant as possible. As another reviewer noted, they do have great technology. Their x-rays are taken digitally, so if they send you to a specialist they can just e-mail the x-rays to the specialist. And they take a lot of digital photos of their work, which they use to explain their work. When I was getting a filling, Dr. Foley stopped to give me more anesthesia, even though I didn't ask - he saw my eyelids fluttering and realized that I could probably use more! The office is convenient, just a few blocks from the Central Square T stop. They do have a limited amount of parking available, just ask. read more

Clean facility, personable dentist -- would have liked this office, except that I ended up with a close to 2k bill for services that my dental insurance didn't cover. I was not given financial informed consent beforehand-- if I'd known, I would have held off on getting a crown done until I completed my out of state move. Furthermore, I tried to negotiate with my insurance but 2 independent dentists stated that I had unnecessary services performed (like scaffolding for the crown-- fortunately my insurance covered about 1k). Beware, you too might find yourself with quite the impressive bill when you think you're going in for routine care. At the very least, ask for the estimated cost before you're slayed by a hefty bill-- I was not offered this and I am kicking myself for not demanding this in advance :( read more

If you want to have the most pleasant dental experience possible, then look no further. First you have Liz, the receptionist, a model of of good humor, local charm & proficiency. Second, you have Lucy, the best hygienist I've ever encountered in my 52 years; talented, knowledgeable, efficient & very entertaining, even if 'at times' a bit high-strung:) Third, you have Dr Foley, the main attraction, a highly competent & sensitive dentist, who is extremely knowledgeable about the latest dental techniques. He has a laser like focus in dealing with true problem areas. As such, I give them all my highest recommendation. On my first visit, after a lengthy time away from having my teeth checked, I was provided a detailed description, high-resolution photographs & an in-depth analysis of what needed to be done, and how best to prevent any further damage to my teeth. Dr. Foley is hands-down the best dentist I have ever seen. I was referred to Harvard Street Dental by a close family friend last year, and I have since referred HSD to multiple others. He is that good. (And his staff is excellent, too!). Dr. Foley knows what he is doing and doesn't try to "sell" you on anything. He takes pictures and explains everything going on with your teeth. He gives you options and works with you to make sure you have a plan that works for your budget but also keeps you healthy to avoid larger future issues. His work is excellent and my teeth seriously look good as new. He takes the aesthetic very seriously, so all of my cavities and other work just blends right in. He's also very aware of your comfort and stops to make sure you're not in pain or sensitive while he's working. Also, the people he refers you to (root canals, etc.) are top-notch and just the friendliest people. I had been to some really bad dentists prior to seeing Dr. Foley, and I am so relieved to have found HSD! I don't dread going to the dentist anymore. HSD is always clean and it's a comforting environment. I usually get to appointments early and they usually (99% of the time) can see me before my appointment is set to start. They also send appointment reminders (via text and email) and estimates (in the mail) for work which is super helpful. Liz at the front desk can come off a bit rough if you're not expecting it, but she is a very sweet lady who genuinely tries to help you get the most out of your insurance. She knows her stuff! The hygienists are also great and very thorough. Full disclosure: I have seen that other dental offices in the area charge less for some services. I went to Dr. Foley for a couple years. Yes, his fancy high tech is impressive, but I got tired of hearing at every visit from both him and his hygienist that my fillings were "too old" and "too big" and that I needed crowns before those teeth cracked. I got tired of refusing. My teeth felt fine. I took my business to another dentist who said my fillings were normal. My new dentist was shocked when I told him I had another dentist tell me I needed crowns. My teeth still feel fine and I still do not have any crowns. When I first moved to Cambridge I found Harvard Street Dental randomly on the Internet and I lucked out. I've been going to Dr.Foley for 4 years and I love it there because: - Clean facility -Advanced technology -Friendly & knowledgeable staff -Consistent quality and thoroughness -Competitive rates -I love that they text you (as well as email and phone call) for appointment reminders! I went here a couple of times. Dr. Foley recommended that any tooth with a significant existing filling as well as a couple of teeth with significant buckles have preventative crowns put on in order to avoid potential tooth cracks or breaks. This would involve drilling down these teeth so that a crown could be inserted. Since this would come at significant cost it was suggested that I budget for this over a few years. Something about this advice didn't seem right since I'd been going to another dentist (now retired) for 20+ years without a similar suggestion. Fast forward a bit and I end up getting a new job down the street from the Harvard Dental School which has a faculty dental practice so I thought I'd get a second opinion. At my first checkup I told the faculty dentist about the suggestion of Dr. Foley to put in crowns for all my large fillings and teeth with buckles. The immediate response was that they thought this suggested treatment was overly aggressive and that is something they do NOT recommend. I had gone waaaayyyy too long without seeing a dentist after moving, and was not excited to go back... This place made me wonder what had taken me so long. Dr. Foley and his staff were very friendly (huge contrast with my last dentist!) and explained what they were doing clearly. Lots of high-tech equipment in the office that let them show you close-up photos of the problems with your teeth (not always fun, but definitely useful) on their computer screen. My fillings I had to get went as well as fillings can go - in and out pretty fast, very little pain. They were also good about getting pre-estimates from my insurance to make sure that the white fillings wouldn't be too expensive and I wouldn't be going over my insurance maximums for the year - very helpful. read more

I had a great experience at Harvard Street Dental. I came in as a new patient for routine cleaning. The wait time at the lobby was minimal. Lucy took x-rays and showed and explained them to me before getting to my teeth. Then Dr. Foley came in for a quick exam and assured me all was well (for now, lol). I did a lot of research on yelp before I went to see a new dentist. The other reviewers were very positive, and for good reason! From start to finish it was a great experience. Liz, the office manager, was helpful, friendly, and efficient. Lucy, my hygenist, was super thorough, friendly, and professional. I knew what was going on the whole time. Dr. Foley was also excellent -- down to earth, answered all of my questions, took time to review anything that seemed suspicious, and was not interested in making aggressive recommendations that seemed driven by money (I'm always skeptical of dentists!) Doctor Foley is great. I had filling and crown done with him. He is detailed in explaining his diagnosis, and his reasoning of the services he recommended. He does not force un-necessary services that have a chance of deteriorating my tooth structure. The lab he works with for coloring the crown also does an excellent job. The front desk Liz is less than desired. On 2 occasions in a year she sent me the wrong bills. I made additional 3-4 phone call to my insurance to clear this up, and even after explaining this to her, she was impatient to have me helping her to see where she made an error. I spent a few hours on clearing up the bills. This is supposed to be her job! One more comment: the dentistry (or maybe just front desk) does not check if x-rays are covered by the insurance, which my dentist in NY does. As a result, I was double charged for x-ray. Edit: Liz cleared up the charges, glad that she became responsive. read more

Great technology for regular cleanings and the doctor was good. Giving them two stars because it was the most painful dentist appointment I've ever had...and I just got a regular cleaning and x-rays. I had a moment when I was laying on the table where I actually thought, "this is what it must feel like to be tortured". My mouth (especially gums) hurt for a while after.
