Based on experiences with pushy receptionists, short-tempered hygienists who would scold me when my gums bled, and terrible-tasting toothpaste, I used to dread going to the dentist. Enter Helen Foo, recommended to me by a co-worker. She runs the entire practice herself, so she doesn't typically pick up when you call, but she usually calls back within a day. From start to finish of the appointment, Dr. Foo is the only one touching your teeth, and personally, I've never trusted anyone more with my pearly whites. I still have PTSD from seeing another dentist after I moved to California. I really need to get on the stick and make my Dr. Foo appointment ASAP! She is the best, not only an excellent skilled dentist, but after a few visits truly a friend that you look forward to seeing, and kinda wish there weren't any more appointments after yours, so you could grab a lunch or something and really catch up. There really isn't a rational explanation for this... And from what I can tell, it's a pretty common review. She should honestly stop doing regular practice herself, and go teach all the other dentists to have a tenth of the chairside manner she does. Helen K. Foo is the best dentist ever. She has ruined me for other dentists. My boyfriend and I have crossed states to see her rather than find local dentists. Unfortunately, not lately, so hopefully she is not reading this because she would be quite annoyed at our lack of dentist visits :). Seriously, I wish I could hire her as my personal dentist. If you are lucky enough to live near enough to go to her, do it. She is comprehensive, caring, skilled, and doesn't make you feel bad, like many a dentist. I first went to her after having a dentist in NY tell me I needed to pay thousands of dollars to fix my teeth and it all had to be done NOW. Most people await their next dentist appointment with a certain terror and dread. I await with anticipation and excitement. Dr. Foo is a fantastic dentist who not only does a spectacular job taking care of your teeth but she's a ton of fun. A few warnings, since she doesn't have a secretary, you generally have to leave a message. just be sure to leave your number and she always gets back within 24 hrs (generally the same day). Also, visits are generally about an hour (every now and then more) not because she's slow or that you have to wait. Dr. Foo takes the time to get to know you and for you to get to know her. I realize that some people probably prefer the dread and the cold relationship they have with their dentist. Personally I love the fact that I can look forward to seeing Dr. Foo. Seems like the real deal! All the other reviews and contact info are on point. Called her and she called back next day. Saw her for a cleaning. Great personality! Really takes the time to get to know you and build rapport. That makes a big difference given the whole "sharp tools in the mouth" nature of the interaction! And when it comes to the sharp tools - probing for cavities and gum pockets - really a nice, soft touch. You can tell she's done it thousands of times. Feels much better than some other dentists I've had in the past. We took X-rays and took time to go over them. Realistic and not pushy! "A couple of small cavities - you can tell me when you want them filled." Took time to answer all my questions. I went in at 10 and was out at around 12 - so she really took her time. Much appreciated. Very thorough on the cleaning. I have a small chip in my front tooth that usually stains - a little dark-brown dot. It's mostly a cosmetic thing. In my past cleanings, they didnt bother with it. Dr. Foo went over it meticulously, with three different tools, taking extra time - and now that brown spot is completely gone! I had no idea it'd look this good again! A small example of how her thoroughness and meticulous nature really pay off! Take-aways: happy I found her. Really great personality. Seems to be all about tried-and-true method and seems utterly dedicated to the craft. Seems highly experienced and a genuinely nice person! Her work is superb and the conversation sometimes makes me feel like I'm living in a sitcom and there are must be hidden cameras in the wall. She is that entertaining. I had her as my dentist more than 10 years ago and the filling she put in is still fine. I had to change dentists later on because of my dental plan coverage and my next dentist commented on how well the filling was done. It was supposed to last only 2 years on average. Dr. Foo was friendly and made me feel very comfortable while at her office. If only my insurance can include her! read more

Dr.Foo is not only an excellent dentist, but a pleasant and amiable person to be around. Considering that her office is located in the usually pricey Brookline, Dr.Foo's rates were very reasonable. How many people can say, "I love my dentist?" I've had an irrational fear of the dentist for as long as I can remember. But after my first visit to Dr. Foo in March of 2009, I can now say, "I love my dentist!" She puts you at ease immediately with her wacky humor. She probably has a routine, but it feels very personalized to your conversation. All medical professionals should have such warm, attuned bedside manor! As another reviewer said, the experience with Dr. Foo is anything but cold. This is not your typical "get in and get out" dentist. Yes, be prepared to spend an hour at her office for a simple cleaning. She'll spend as long actually doing stuff with your teeth as just talking and joking with you. That's just fine with me... I have to a agree with previous poster. My wife and i have been going to Dr. Foo for a number of years. As a dental phobe, someone who did not like the idea of someone putting sharp objects in my mouth. I feel very at ease. Years ago my wife had a tooth ache and went to a Boston area dentist who used to advertise very heaviliy on the "T". Exam, x-rays, cleaning for $X dollars. (You see him on TV now as part of a large practice that begins with the word Gentle). His diagnosis was that she needed a periodontal screening, root canal etc. etc. She was panicked because she had just starterd her first job and $$ was tight. She happened to live in the same building as Dr. Foo who had just finishe dental school and approached her about a second opinion, Dr. Foo diagnosed her as having a simple cavity. Dr. Foo is unlike any dentist I've been to - and I mean that in a good way. First of all, her office is incredibly convenient if you take the Green Line. It's steps away from the St. Mary Street stop on the C line, but also a 5-minute walk from Kenmore, the Fenway stop on the D line, or BU Central on the B line. I always call and leave a message when I want to schedule an appointment, and she usually calls me back that day or the following. She doesn't book months in advance like some other places. As far as I can tell (and I've been three times now), she's a one-woman shop. No hygienist, no receptionist. Just Dr. Foo. She does a great job, and will talk to you the whole time, which I appreciate because I'm a nervous patient. It feels a lot like going to the hair stylist or nail salon, except it's just you and Dr. Foo. She does a really great job with my sensitive gums, reassures me that my teeth are not going to fall out just because I have a receding gumline, and sends me home with a bag of goodies after every cleaning. I have Delta Dental, and I've never seen a bill, so I appreciate that she handles all of that for me. I always plan for about 90 minutes when I schedule an appointment, and the extra time is well worth the stress I'm NOT experiencing with Dr. Foo. read more

I started going to Dr. Foo seven years ago when I mentioned to my then boyfriend that I needed a local dentist. I feel that part of the reason that we got married is that I knew that we both knew what was important in a dentist. In the interest of self disclosure, I should say that I am a high maintenance dental patient. I grind and clench my teeth, my sinus allergies sometimes make me feel like I need a root canal, and (oh, yeah) I have needed two root canals. Several times I have called Dr. Foo worried about this or that. She always calls me right back and puts me at ease. My friends and colleagues have been amazed that I have a dentist who actually calls me. Dr. Foo is just as engaging in person. She takes the time to understand your needs and never makes unnecessary recommendations. When I needed both root canals, I took took her recommendation to pay to go to a good endodontist and was so glad that I did. My husband and I continue to go to Dr. Foo, even if she doesn't accept our dental insurance. She is worth every dime you will spend. read more

It's so funny, I typically don't post reviews either but in looking up Doctor Foo I read all these wonderful reviews and was truly inspired. I too traveled state lines frequently to see her. She is that amazing. I started going to her back in college with a serious dental issue that happen while wrestling. That then began an amazing friendship that I very much value and enjoy. She was everything you could ask for in a dentist and so much more, she treats you like a friend as opposed to a patient. This is the worst dental experience I ever had and I am very traumatized! I had to wait hours every time. I came for a check up and the dentist started banging so hard on my teeth that he broke it off partly. Then Dr Foo said I can not longer have a bridge and now need a partial denture that I have to put out at night I have been crying over it to get a denture and hhe is responsible. My teeth could have been fixed for $1400 over the insurance and now the only other option is false teeth, 4 of them for $3000 each. This I cannot afford. Never go to these people, it is a huge mistake. I should have listened to my intuition. The place was close to my house and I was lazy. I am paying for my mistake big time now. Never go to Chineese people again . They try to rip you off for nothing. One small thing cost me thousands. After he open the tooth he told me the estimate. Learn from the mistakes read the reviews before you go there. Shame on you Dr. Foo you shouldn't be call a doctor you should be call theft. read more
