The reasons I switched from the old office were various ranging from being rushed during the exams, to that weird/sinking feeling you get when you ask a question from said staff and they conjure up that look like you are bothering them. Dr. Tran is very professional and does a complete exam with a thorough explanation. She has the latest equipment to see how sharp or un-sharp your vision is. I was able to get a new set of RGP contact lenses and a great pair of glasses. She is also very personable, with an engaging personality. I never felt rushed during the initial exam. I've had a subsequent visit since then as a follow-up. Her assistant, Micaela, is very sweet and has great taste with selecting the right eye-wear frames. We went through several options, and picked the best pair to match my face! You can set up appointments through her web-site and they will email a couple of confirmations for you. She is located on a busy street with plenty of parking in the surrounding area. Dr. Tran's office is also conveniently opened on Saturday as well. I know some people might be hesitant to venture out into the Tenderloin but this was one of my favorite optometrist experiences: (i) the accommodating staff, (ii) the informative doctor, and (iii) excellent customer service. I answered an email from Looksie about their 40% sale happening the weekend of Dec. 12th. Initially, I didn't have any plans to purchase another pair of prescription eye glasses..but, I had this feeling they would have something I would absolutely love..and they were right. I purchased my current prescription glasses, Oliver Goldsmith Consul-G about a year ago and I love them. Fast forward to now and I'm very excited to see what Looksie has in store..... My first contact was with Kayla, a design student who was very nice and very honest. I wasn't sure what I wanted but, I knew it had to be classic and progressive to my already perfect Consul. She started showing me a bunch but nothing really resonated. Jennifer was way to busy to help me, she had plenty going on. Dr. Tran was next and I knew she would suggest my next pair of specs. Dr. Tran is the kind of optometrist you want helping you find the right look. She's super knowledgeable and current with all the latest and greatest. She suggested Dr. Woo and I must say, she is good. That is the one I have been eyeing on since the start. I just needed her confirmation and approval. The Looksie store is a clean, simple and modern layout with great lighting, great graphics to accompany all the unique selections of eye wear. It's located on the famous Polk Street, and if you don't look for it, you'll pass it by. During the sale event, they had bubbles service which was very nice. They offer a design and look for everyone, considering the size of the shop they only carry the best. The next time you having lunch or dinner on Polk St, I highly recommend you stop by and check out the awesome selections. I waited to post this updated review far after I finally got reimbursed by my insurance provider (VSP). Long story short, I am a bit disappointed about how I was treated in my subsequent interactions following my first visit here. I came here to get an eye exam + contacts. I recently started a job with a new employer who somehow messed up my vision insurance coverage so I wasn't showing up on VSP's end as an insured. The day I walked in for the exam, I was told about this coverage information (right before my exam). The doctor tried to sort it out with VSP when she had trouble verifying my insurance, and in that conversation with VSP, she was a bit rude to the operator on the phone. The conversation I overheard made me feel a bit uncomfortable and it should have been a clear red flag for me, but I had no idea that same attitude would turn around to me later. Following that call, I was still not verified on a VSP plan and I asked the doctor what I should take as next steps. Did I need to reschedule or was I still able to get an exam done and get reimbursed later? She asked me who my employer was and she insisted that many employees from the company see her and that she was certain that I could get reimbursed later. I had also done my research beforehand and knew that she was an in-network provider, so I trusted that she knew what she was talking about and I'd be able to get reimbursed later based on her certainty. After having paid for the exam and contacts out of pocket and getting an itemized receipt, I proceeded a couple weeks later to the VSP site to file a claim for reimbursement. On the site, there's only the option to file a claim for out-of-network providers. Since the in-network reimbursement would be hundreds of dollars different from an out-of-network reimbursement, I then called VSP to ask how to get a claim settled for in-network providers. VSP tells me that is not possible, and that I need to go to my optometrist and asked to get reimbursed from them with a backdated visit authorization because VSP only pays doctors directly. At this point I'm thinking, shit, that sucks, but no big deal because it was probably an honest mistake and my optometrist will probably realize this and reimburse me once they hear about this. I visit the optometrist the week after to tell them of this information, and it's pretty busy when I get there so I'm told by the assistant that they'd figure it out and get back to me in a couple of days with a resolution. That's fine if they're busy and that's fine if they need time to sort it out. Two days later, I am called by the assistant, and she tells me that (in her words) VSP has lied to me and that I must file a claim reimbursement through them. I try to explain the situation again because I didn't feel like VSP was lying based on the information I found, and she very rudely cuts me off and insists that they cannot help reimburse me at all and that I need to work this out with VSP. This is the point where red flags go off in my head, thinking: what if I can't get reimbursed now? I'd be out a few hundred dollars and frankly, I could really use that money. At this point, I'm pretty stressed out and irritated at the situation. I call VSP back and explain the entire story to them from the beginning up to the refusal of reimbursement from this optometrist. It was up to them to save me out of feeling helpless in this situation, and seriously, thank GOD that they did. VSP called the optometrist directly to discuss with them, and although the optometrist still refused to reimburse me, VSP made a special exception to reimburse me directly for what they would have otherwise paid the optometrist. The kicker though? VSP tells me over the phone that the doctor had explicitly said that she recommended to me to reschedule my appointment on the day I had my exam when she verified I wasn't showing up on VSP as an insured. I know for a fact that was not the advice she gave me, which leads me to wonder if she might have also known that you can't get in-network reimbursements from VSP. Also very sadly, despite all that VSP did, whatever the hell invoice the optometrist gave to VSP wasn't entirely accurate, and I calculated having lost about $70 out of pocket. I don't even really care about this amount anymore because the entire situation really pissed me off and was such a wasteful drain on my time and energy. I am not the type that likes to go and bash on businesses on Yelp because I understand how it can negatively affect a business, but I'd like to think this review will help people make informed decisions upon visiting here. Back in my college days, I used to work as an optometric assistant and I'm pretty appalled by the lack of customer service and unprofessionalism here. I can't recommend this office or optometrist based on trust alone. read more

I came across Looksie on Yelp after desperately searching for a new eye doctor in the city. I woke up with a severe pain in my eye and my local eye doctor was in San Jose... Thanks to Yelp I was confident calling Looksie for an appointment and going to see Dr. Tran. I called around 9am and she fit me right in at 11:30. I was greeted by name and offered a cup of hot tea (who does that?!) :D as I waited for my evaluation. Dr. Tran was kind enough to do a full eye exam for me and then prescribed me antibiotics for the ulceration I had in my eye. I am so happy I went to go see her instead of going straight to the ER because she knew exactly what to look for and was so reassuring. I had SUCH a pleasant experience with her. Not only that, but she followed up with me over the weekend on her days off via text and phone call. Never have I met a doctor who was so invested in a patient who had just gone in for the first time. I truly felt like I was a patient of hers for years. I was charged a heavy fee for bringing up my "eye allergy" called GCP in the conversation, which Dr. Tran didn't even treat. She merely repeated information I was telling her from my previous doctor. I left without any medical prescriptions to treat the GCP, and no instruction for care - which is what I made the appointment for in the first place. They might be good for simple eye checkups, glasses, but I guess I should've researched them more before going with a more complicated problem. read more

I love Dr. Amy Tran and her staff I recently experienced blurred vision and constant straining with my contact lenses. And I was so worried. I haven't had my eye exam in two years. Dr. Tran was super thorough and patient with me, reviewing my history inside out, and carefully determined my prescription. She gave me a few new contact lens to try and schedule a follow up visit for me. So instead of rushing off, she spent extra time explaining the cause for my vision changes, and reassuring me. It did take an additional follow up since I do want to try the new contact lens prescription, which totally makes sense! I appreciated the in depth evaluation Dr. Tran gave me and the time she took! At least now I have the peace of mind knowing what the problem is (I'm not going blind, yay!). read more

I have different contact prescriptions for each eye and I can't tell you how many times I've left other optometry offices only to find that they didn't properly measure the Rx for one eye; that one eye was noticeably more blurry than the other. It seems like many offices just want you in and out. Sometimes I don't notice that one Rx is incorrect during the appointment and it's not until i've walked around for a bit that it becomes apparent that one eye is blurrier. Some places have even wanted to charge me to correct their mistake. Dr. Tran, on the other hand, spent more time with me than any other optometrist has to make sure she got it right. And she assured me that if there were any problems, there wouldn't be a charge to fix it. I appreciate someone who stands by their work. Also, her shop is like a calm oasis on Polk street. Dr. Tran is the best doctor I've ever had in my life. She is knowledgeable, *thorough,* patient, understands the problem, and documents all the details -- exactly what you want in a doctor. My first visit was over 2 years ago when I came back from Coachella with a raging week old corneal abrasion. This means some flying sand probably got under my contact lens, scratched my eyeball, and got infected since I wore the same pair for a week. It was so bad I couldn't look at my computer screen for 5 minutes without my eye crying (light sensitivity). At Coachella I lost the bottom half of my vision after it got dark (very inconvenient since that's how you see people in crowds) and it felt like there was always something stuck in my eye, no matter how many eye washes I used. Basically Dr. Tran saved my eyeball and now I can see again. She took one look, immediately knew what was wrong, and took all the steps to make sure I had all the eye drops I needed for immediate and long term healing (antibiotic, analgesic, lubricating). She also switched me to daily contacts to save me from myself because I am incapable of throwing out contacts on a regular basis (I think everyone should switch to dailies and this has probably prevented multiple eye infections). More examples of Dr. Tran being extremely knowledgeable and thorough: During one appointment I made a comment about redness in my eye ("Oh that's probably because of the corneal abrasion") and she immediately responded, "No, that abrasion was in your left eye, this is your right eye." She knew my eye better than me, like the back of her hand! During another appointment she saw red tendrils in my eyeball and referred me to an opthamologist to make sure there wasn't any concern (instead of just hand waving it). On top of that she and Jennifer helped me pick out two pairs of rad new glasses that fit my face shape. I still don't understand face shapes so thank goodness they do. Jennifer is awesome to work with -- always organized, on top of everything, and a cheery presence. Thank you both for everything! read more

Pushed into an unnecessary digital retinal photography, which costs $39 and is not covered by insurance. I asked multiple times do I need to sign the release for it since I communicated I wouldn't do it in the visit but the doctor took me to a room where they did it anyways and charged by $39. I went in just to check out a scratch on my eye and my insurance covered the visit but still had to pay $39 since they slyly pushed me into the digital retina photography. Very upset about that part of the visit and do not plan on returning. Everything else was fine and the lady at the front desk was very polite but I don't appreciate being pushed into costly unnecessary procedures. read more

Overall, great place for excellent eye-care, service, and a unique, high-quality product line. I've broken this review down by Product, Service, and Healthcare. - Product - Looksie carries a unique, higher end line of products. I personally believe in investing in the important things in life and taking care of them - this definitely applies to eyewear and eye health. I was considering something more "disposable / accessible" but decided my eye health and products were important enough to invest in. With Looksie, I was happy to see a unique line of products that were designed and made to be loved. Both my parents, who are very particular, found (too many) things they loved. My mom chose a pair of Anne et Valentines and she seems to be really enjoying them and the attention they grab right now. - Service - Everything went without a hitch. In fact, my parents were just transitioning to a new plan so there were many things that could've been confusing around details of the new plan and what happens during the transition. Nothing they couldn't handle. The Looksie ladies have amazing fashion sense and will find something to enhance your personal style and need. If you're like me and get easily stuck on something that might not be the most flattering for you, be prepared to be saved from yourself with an honest opinion. The only thing I would say is that all good things seem to take time, and that was no exception here. Between our schedules and Looksie's calendar, it was hard to find a time that worked for us. So either book your appointment early if you know you want to get checked out or hope they have a slot open for you. Dr. Tran was kind enough to stay late for us so we could all come together. Also, there were a number of other people - it is a store in front after all - so we did have to wait a bit here and there through the process. But it's easy to entertain yourself given all the products you can try on and get lost in the decision you get to make. The best gift that came out of the service was the story behind each product. My dad chose a pair of glasses that, according to Dr. Tran, the Microsoft CEO also wears. My dad likes to repeat stories, as dads tend to do. So guess what story I get to hear over and over. At least he's enjoying himself. - Healthcare - Dr. Tran seems to know her stuff. But, any doc that has gone through my vetting process generally does. What really sets Dr. Tran apart for me was how much of an eye-geek she really is. This is a woman who not only knows her craft but also seems to love it. She made several comments on the particulars of my eyes and even seemed excited about things she was seeing. I felt kind of special. She also noticed something on my dad's eyes and asked me to make sure he follows through on a recommendation she made to him with his primary care doc. You can tell she cares. Anyways, overall great product, great service, and feel great about both my eyes and my parents' as well. Would definitely recommend. read more

Dr. Tran was great! Her office space, retail store, personality, and professionalism far exceeded my expectations. I was able to book, and re-book appointments via email with no problems whatsoever. Importantly, I often get frustrated with medical professionals charging outrageous prices for their time without doing any actual science, and my time spent with Dr. Tran was the opposite of that. She spent a full hour with me fully diagnosing my eyesight with modern equipment and techniques, explaining each test, the results, the diagnosis. Awesome. I really love Dr Tran, she has helped me with both my contact lenses and my normal glasses. She is caring, professional and she also gave me some advice on how to treat my eyes for some redness I was getting. Facilities are very nice although parking can be a bit tricky. Honestly, I can't say enough amazing things about Looksie. Dr. Tran and her practice are professional, informative, helpful and extremely friendly. I had a tricky situation of trying to find someone to repair some vintage, high-end sunglasses for my wife. She helped us understand our options, gave it a shot and we ended up getting them back looking better than new. Excellent experience with the staff, doctor, and eyeglasses selection. I came here on a whim as my husband noticed it as we walked by, and I'd been searching around for a new pair of glasses. I'd checked out a couple of other speciality glasses stores around the city, and had only found one other store that had a pair of glasses I really liked. Anyhow, we walked in and was greeted by a really kind assistant. Dr. Amy Tran then approached me herself, and was incredibly friendly and open, and didn't add any pressure for me to purchase anything from her. Ultimately it was her friendliness that won me over, and I ended up providing her with my RX and her assistant found me a perfect pair of glasses (I was there about an hour looking at a gazillion pairs, and at no time did the assistant or doctor lose their patience with me). They also took my insurance which was a plus, and I am loving my glasses. All in all I got my pair for a little under $200 after my insurance coverage, which is a great price for an excellent, stylish pair of glasses. Highly recommend this place. read more

I've been casually looking for a new optometrist for a while, and I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this place! I stopped by Looksie for an eye exam and a new pair of glasses and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Dr. Tran and her staff were all welcoming, attentive, and efficient. I told Dr. Tran about my occasional issues with dry eyes and she gave me a lot of really helpful recommendations. They also have a great collection of stylish frames -- the best that I've seen, really. I usually find my choice of frames limited because my high prescription means I'm better off with smaller frames, but I still found several great options that would work for me. Really?? My first time with this eye doctor was very unpleasant. I have mono vision, she gave me a trial contact lenses which I was charged $144 while my insurance says was way to much and should only be $55 for copayment. She let me put my contacts and failed to advise its not suited for driving, I went home that evening and on the freeway my eyesight was blurry and the cars flying alongside of me and in front of me were all doubled which had almost got me into near accidents and worse was going up muir beach on the zigzag road at dusk terrified me. It was difficult to make a decision to take it out since my hands were not sanitized. Nevertheless, I called her on a Monday to let her know my ordeal and told her i am not coming back after the trial. She refunded me the money i Paid for which was ok but that was not the point. This morning I was curious to try the contacts just to see how it is and it's the worst contacts ever, I could not see a thing it was all burry and much worse i can't use it for reading, so disappointing and such a shame. I wonder how many friends she had to talk into to write all these nonsense on yelp. Additionally while inside the examination room she was rude and impolite giving me orders like "put your purse there" "let's go to the other room!" Like she's annoyed. Really, is that professional? I don't normally write comments on yelp but this time I couldn't help myself. read more
