I was in Montrose for my niece's wedding this weekend. This is a solid spot. I love independent coffee shops and roasters. First experienced this joint several years ago when I was in town for my nephew's wedding, and was happy to see this joint still around. I'm from a big city, and it's increasingly difficult to find coffee shops designed to make you want to stay a while (I.e. comfortable seating options, etc). So, it's refreshing to walk into a place like this...which feels like a coffee shop met a hunting lodge. Service was good. They take orders efficiently and crank out drinks quickly. First morning, I can't remember the name of what I had, but I believe it was a mixture butter pecan / white chocolate latte. It was good, but I asked for it half sweet and it still came out sweet enough to cross your eyes. The second morning, just black coffee. For an independent roaster, I was a tad disappointed; flavor wasn't there. My wife and I are coffee connoisseurs; we research and order from independent roasters across the country. So, we know flavor profiles and consider ourselves knowledgeable. Additional "cons": they could do better at announcing completed orders. Had I not been standing right there and asked, who knows how long our drinks would have sat there. Lastly, I was disappointed in the bagged whole bean coffee options. Other than a label with the name of the roast, there was no further information regarding flavor profiles or anything. Overall: love the atmosphere,...that alone is worth the fourth star. read more

The people to work here could care less about the customers. They drop food put it back on the plate and serve it. I saw that. They forget to bring you what you ordered . If they make a drink wrong, they say they didn't and refuse to replace it. This place used to be really really good but now forget it. read more

This place is really great. The decor and environment is well done and quiet, stylish and fun. The ladies, and occasional guy, that provide service are exceptionally friendly and smiley. The drinks are world class. The Hot Frosted Mint Mocha is to die for. It's like an Andes Mint you can drink, with a coffee backend. The pastries are always good, with a nice variety. This was such a cute spot! Drive-thru available with way more seating inside than expected. They have plenty of tables and a nice fireplace. Super friendly staff and grab and go sandwiches and wraps. I chose a mango peach smoothie and it was one of the best I've ever had. They bake everything fresh daily in the case and have cute themed mugs and hats for sale inside. read more

It's a lovely place, there isn't a food specific menu but they do have a case full of baked goods. I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese and it was delicious...cost about $6 with tip. The staff seemed friendly, although I'm not a fan of seeing the belly of the gal that was making my bagel first thing in the morning...could be just me but it's not something I personally like to look at while I'm thinking about breakfast. I've only ever been to Looney Bean in Bishop, CA with my sister but she moves and lo and behold here's a Looney Bean in a town I'd never heard of before. We stopped in for coffee and brekke. I'm a fan of the place. I love the dirty hippie and it's the only drink I ever order here, with almond milk since I don't drink dairy. The cinnamon rolls are also excellent. The ceramics are stunning but on the pricier side. I'd bet this is the best coffee shop in town. My sister mentioned another we passed by, Coffee Trader or something but the vibe inside Looney Bean is always just perf! I'll definitely visit each time I'm in town. Placed order at the drive through, women at the window forgot items 2 times, tried to charge us 3 different amounts and then when we tried to explain are concern, the asian american woman then at the window simply said I can't hear you, because she left her headphones on.. Maybe the worst coffee shop experience I've ever had in over 30 years of coffee drinking. Passing through Montrose on a road trip and after drinking good/exceptional coffee for the past week throughout Colorado, found this place recommended on Yelp, ordered cold brew coffee, and was served what looked and tasted like overly acidic watery iced tea. They offered some from a different batch which looked even more translucent. They wouldn't add a shot of espresso to the drinks to make them acceptable (a simple solution I offered) without charging for the shots, and would not offer a refund for the drinks--$7 + $2 tip + tax wasted. We were told to come back in the morning to "talk to the managers." Went to Starbucks (the first on this trip) down the road and enjoyed their exceptional cold brew (see picture). read more

Good options, great bagels, and good coffee. When I visited Looney Bean I got a simple drip coffee and a bagel but the bagels they have are EXCELLENT. Possibly the best coffee shop bagel I have ever had. Their coffee was decent and the service was good. I think I may have found a coffee heaven in Montrose, Colorado. The Looney Bean Coffee Roasting Co. makes a darn good coffee. The iced vanilla latté is close to perfection. The espresso is strong without being overpowering, the vanilla balancing perfectly, and the little ice cubes chilling the latté without watering it down. Mmm-mm good. The Mango/Peach smoothie is not-too sweet yummy goodness. My daughter loved it. They bake their own pastries and goodies, fresh, every morning. The Blueberry Oat Bran muffin was deeeelicuous! Crispy oaty topping with moist blueberry muffin underneath. This coffee house is spacious and welcoming, good for big or small groups. It has a lodge feel with the beautiful hardwood everywhere. They also offer a drive thru. Service is friendly and quick. Is it weird to drive an hour just for coffee. Well, if it's wrong, I don't want to be right! read more

Great iced americano! Service was good, as well. Hubster had an iced chai latte that he enjoyed. Said it was good and not too sweet like some places. Nice atmosphere. The owners have done a great job putting together a tasteful shop where customers are free to kick back and relax. A warm log interior, a cozy fireplace, rustic granite, and the coffee roaster visible behind the bar help make The Looney Bean a memorable place. Their prices are easily the highest I've encountered. Yet I understand that when I go to Looney Bean, I go to open my Apple, lounge in a leather arm chair, enjoy the view of the San Juan Mountains, and warm myself at the fireside, all while sipping a triple-shot house mocha. With the exception of the mocha, you can't get any of that at *bucks. Even if you could find all that at your local mega corporate coffee burner, your drink would taste something like a smoldering vacuum cleaner belt. This is in addition to the fact that I favor their approach to roasting and brewing over any other coffee house in Montrose. Their coffee really is the best around. In my dozens of visits, I have never had an issue with the friendliness or professionalism of the staff. In fact, I have been offered to have my custom drink remade as many times as necessary to make it just the way I want. They treat their customers well, and my support is with them. I highly recommend their Russian roast in a French press; it makes for a wonderful, multicultural coffee experience. . read more

looney bean a nice coffee shop. our only complaint is that they don't make enough coffee cake muffins or the apple and cheese croissant. even when we get there early they have sold out. their blueberry muffins are ok but nothing to write home about. When you have pastries that are selling out early perhaps you should make more. This tells me they are pretty popular. read more

In this economy right now, being contentious with customers because of a simple request they have is the dumbest thing you can do. My wife and I stopped by this place three weeks ago on our drive to Ridgway. When we walked in, we could hear the female manager (wearing a headset) literally barking at her kitchen staff to "make sandwiches!!" She seemed incredibly wound up. When I put my coffee order in, I asked for an iced espresso in a paper cup as I've found that paper cups keep the ice from melting vs. plastic cups. The guy taking my order pulled up a paper cup and that's when the manager literally pounced toward the register, took the cup out of his hand and handed him a plastic cup. When I told her I purposely asked for a paper cup, she said, "You're just going to go in the back and fill it up with something else..." I stood there in stunned silence. I'm what??? No, I'm not. I asked for the paper cup again and she spun around to the guy at the register and said, "Plastic ONLY!" I should have left but my wife wanted a cup of coffee so we got our drinks and both were undrinkable. Literally. Like acidic rot. Poured them out after a few sips. I will never go back and I'll tell everyone I know to avoid this place as well. read more

It was nice to find this drive-thru coffee as I passed through Montrose. The staff was very nice and our Iced Americanos were prompt and delicious. Their coffee is full-bodied with a chocolate accent. It was a refreshing change from the often found thin coffee that is abundant in many commercial coffeehouses. I will be back. read more
