One of two orders ( two 2 item combos) was wrong and our chile rellenos tasted like dish soap -- this is not an exaggeration, we both spat out our bites of relleno. I called to speak with the manager (and was disconnected after five minutes) who eventually deducted the price of the rellenos from the bill. That was appreciated but, in my opinion, the whole meal should have been free since one order was completely wrong and the entire thing was inedible due to the lasting taste of soap in our mouths. The fish was fresh and seasoned well with some lime and was perfect with the creamy avocado and fresca that accompanied it. The earth and sea molcajete was also delicious. It comes in a big black stone pot and is filled with a hot stew with all kinds of meat, chicken, steak, sausage, and shrimp as well as peppers, cheese, and onion. They come with handmade tortillas so you can make your own tacos, and you can ask for up to 2 more if you run out without extra charge. My wife and I were out shopping and I had planned for us to get lunch on our day out, we came in from Ojai and didn't know about Agave, the place was very clean, the staff really friendly and knowledgeable. We had their super nochos, and the combination meal, everything was very well prepared, marinated grilled chicken in the nochos was well seasoned and moist, the black beans were spot on, the sopes were great, and the chili reino was as good as I have ever had. The service was very fast despite the place really busy. Plus the prices were very reasonable, Thanks to their staff for excellent lunch experience and making our day out of town more special. read more

Very very happy that Los Agaves has moved so close to UCSB, but I think that they still need to iron out a few issues before I am ready to give them the high praise that the other locations net. It may be a lack of space, but ordering at the counter doesn't have the same fun as it does at the other locations; the same could be said for the interior, which is nice, but doesn't have the warmth. But the real surprise was the salad that came with it: fresh greens, mandarin slices, raisins, and a delicious dressing. Way more than the typical side salad. Legitimately superb food. They put big, firm, delicious shrimp in the agaves burrito and agaves enchiladas, and the sauce on those things - I have NO idea what is in that sauce, but it is incredible. Creamy, nicely seasoned, and a great complement to the otherwise one-dimensional savoriness of the rest of the dish. I am a huge fan of their aguas frescas too - the chia seeds in the cucumber agua fresca are a great touch. Fam also always gets the ceviche tostada. Great place, I go here all the time. They have some of the best Mexican food in town. I personally like the burritos, but the enchiladas and tacos are worth having as well. Taco Tuesday is a great time to come in. Low cost tacos that taste great, plus two for one beers. It's a pair you can't beat. Now there salsa selection is worth it's own paragraph. They have a ton of different flavors, and are all worth having. From a mild salsa go spicy chipotle, they have anything you could want. And they aren't only for the chips, smother your burrito in two or three to really kick up the flavor. I never leave the salsa bar without 3 different Salas. They are also very fast too bring you your order, even when busy. They sometimes won't bring everyone's food at once, leave you to wait 5 out so minutes for everyone to have there food. It's a little annoying, but worth the wait. Seating can be hard when they are really busy. But most of the time it's fine. Overall this is one of my most regular restaurant, weather its for lunch with coworkers, or dinner, definitely worth checking out. read more

This restaurant is one of many small restaurants that surround our very popular movie theater in Goleta. All of these small restaurants are walk in type, order at the counter, get a number and sit outside on the patio and wait for your order to arrive. I must say the menu is much more extensive than I thought it would be. They have virtually everything a walk in sit down restaurant would serve and it's perfectly cooked. Came in a few weeks ago with a friend. Place was busy and it's a seat-yourself kind of deal. Anyways, when our food came out they had mixed up our order. Sent it back, and when the second round of burritos came out, one was cold and one had cheese (when we asked for none). Sent it back again (after asking ourselves if it was worth it), got the correct and yummy burritos, and the manager sent over a dessert and an apology. I went after about a week of them opening and did not experience the long lines that other reviewers wrote about. I got the Garden Burrito for takeout with a side order of fish. The burrito was really good! The service was also really nice. As I was waiting for my order a waitress came up to me and asked if I needed anything or would like some chips while I waited. I'm not a diehard fan of this place like many locals, but it's a solid restaurant to satisfy a Mexican food craving. I just have to order carefully because, for me, their food ranges all the way from great to gross. Great: Their shrimp anything, alambres, mole enchiladas, chimichanga, salsa bar. Good: Regular enchiladas, chile verde burrito, burrito mojado Gross: mango dressing (tastes like dessert on lettuce), chipotle sauce (way too creamy or something) The food is pricey for take-out, but they give you free chips with your order, which is a nice addition. Not too impressive. Pros: They had a table available with no wait for our party of 7. Good variety on the menu, something for everyone. Service was pretty quick (with exceptions). Cons: They messed up our order in multiple ways - They brought 6 out of 7 entrees quickly, but 10 minutes later we will still waiting for my sister-in-law's food. They forgot the side of guacamole on two different orders. They charged us for an extra order of steak fajitas that we didn't order. (they did refund them) They brought a completely incorrect order for me (which I started eating because who knows what's inside of enchiladas until you start eating them.) With a party of 7, it's easy to understand how some mix ups can happen. But their response was not too impressive either. No one offered to make the order right (i.e. bring my correct enchiladas, bring the forgotten guacamole). They did agree to refund the fajitas that we didn't order, but I had to go find someone and ask. At some point, my partner ran out of tortillas for her fajitas. I asked for more, and they charged me $3 (seriously, you stiffed me on shrimp enchiladas and two orders of guacamole and you STILL want to nickel and dime me on some extra tortillas??). I had to go up to the counter and ask for some kind of customer service at least 5x during the meal. Food was decent, but not super-impressive. We left full, but frustrated and disappointed. The tostada was some soft taco shells on the bottom, and dripping in sauce. There was a ton of wet lettuce. I'm not sure what she was expecting, but it was far too wet and sloppy for her taste. I got the Tostada Salad - beans are not refried, but more the whole light beans. There was a ton of guacamole on it. Overall, it was pretty sloppy. Luckily they put the dressing on the side - it was more like a sweet sauce which I did not use. The black beans are served in adorable little tostada shells. Atmosphere- It can get pretty busy here. Eat outside if you're looking for peace and calm. Service- Fast, friendly service Price- Too much! For about $30 we got: Agaves Burrito- has halibut and shrimp in it and an insane amount of sauce (like, dripping off the plate and making a mess). It was a good burrito and I enjoyed it, although 1/2 the sauce would have been perfect. The rice and salad that come with the burrito are delicious. Tacos Plaza de Toros- Tacos with a very generous portion of steak, chorizo, and chicharron. Husband was happy with these. 1 drink Complimentary chips and salsa- Chips are homemade and delicious. Salsas are pretty gross. They have a ton of them, but the only one I like is the pico de gallo, which still is nothing special. I like bright, spicy, fresh salsas, and most of theirs are quemada or cooked salsas. One that looked normal tasted like pasta sauce. Maybe that's your thing is dipping your chips into pasta sauce. I've seen a lot of people go nuts for the avocado salsa. I'm all about guacamole and I'm all about salsa, but the two are separate and should stay separate, in my opinion, but I guess the nice thing is that the salsas are complimentary so you can try them for yourself.
