Amazing food and atmosphere! The pork platter is just mouthwatering. It comes with so many things that you get full easily! The sweetness of the maduros with the salty food is just such a great contrast. Everything pairs perfectly and compliments each other. Also, the sauce they offer is just amazing! The place as you walk in is small but could say cozy. Ordered the Flank Steak with rice and beans and sweet plantains. My steak even though I ordered medium was very over cooked and dry. I want to give them 4 stars because the waitress was soo nice, but I think the food could've been better. I had the country platter, which comes with a shit ton of stuff: avocado, steak, plaintain, rice, beans, egg, corn bread, and fried pork (colombians must really love their protein). This was $14. However, if you get the mini platter for $9 (?), it comes with the same items, just slightly smaller portions. My friend got the mini and I got the full platter, you could hardly tell the difference. Still in search of the best bandeja plate and this place was pretty good. Service was friendly and fast. We received our food in record time. The portions are huge except for the beans and rice. The beans could use more of the sauce it's cooked in. Avocado was nice and ripe. The steak was a huge portion but it lacked in flavor the most. The fried pork was the best part of the plate. Not overly dry with the meat being moist in the inside and crispy on the outside. Plate also comes with an egg and plain arepa which I never eat. The green hot sauce was the best I've had. Was looking for food and stumbled on this hole in the wall. I ordered the mini combo platter with grilled steak. It came with rice, avocado, plantain, beans, pork rinds filed with pork meat and some corn bread. I barely could finish the food. It was quite filling. It's funny how a lot of Manhattanites and transplant Manhattanites talk about how great the city is and disregard the other boroughs but that's because they never left the island and ventured over the bridges. All you need do is walk from down Queens Blvd and Roosevelt avenue from Sunnyside to Corona and see the plentitude of restaurants from various places in the world including the middle east, Ecuador, the Phillipines, Colombia, Cuba, China, Tibet, Thailand, India Subcontinent.. etc etc - all in a 50 block radius. This doesn't even take into account the Chinese and Korean restaurants in Flushing, Eastern European in Rego Park and Kew Gardens.... Ok, enough ranting. Today I ventured into Los Arrieros in Jackson Heights for lunch. The restaurant is about 2 blocks from the subway. First just being in Jackson Heights - Latin Music blaring from the stores and cars passing, the various Latin food trucks and the people - you feel like you are in a different country - but definitely as you step into the restaurant you are transported to Colombia with this Paisa restaurant (Antioquia). The waitresses greet you as you walk in, smiles, flirtatious, friendly, and very attentive just like in Colombia, the music playing is a mix of Spanish ballads, vallenato, and salsa. They have a pretty extensive menu with Sancochos (soups of the day), an assortment of bandejas, and fish dishes. I ordered the Bandeja Montañita - which is like the Bandeja Paisa (rice and beans, fried egg, avocado, plantains, arepa) except with ground beef instead of steak, and they gave the option of chicharron or chorizo and I opted for the chorizo... It was really good, and except for a few things it would have been perfect. First, the beans were good, but I like the beans more watery, and would have preferred more beans and less ground meat. Located under the subway on a busy intersection this tiny little joint give you it's all with great service and peppy Latin music pumping though the speakers. When it comes to Colombian food (lived in colombia) this little restaurant is the best in the 5 boroughs by far from their soups (sancocho DE galling my fave) to their bandjas the food is just incredible very friendly staff. Been coming here for over 15 yrs and I will keep coming for as long as their doors are open. Highly recommend this Colombian restaurant! Jackson Heights has no dearth of great Colombian food, but I have to say this is one of my favorites - the service is fantastic (I feel like they are all my aunts and Doña Salomé in particular takes great care of everyone) and the food is everything I miss from the motherland. Like typical Colombian cuisine, the portions are hefty, so order wisely. The most traditional dish is the Bandeja Paisa, a giant platter of steak, white rice, beans, chicharrón (fried pork...no good-sounding translation into English, I'm afraid!), maduros (sweet plantains), avocado, arepa, and a fried egg. I am also a big fan of their tostones (fried plaintains) and their empanadas (which they make to order so they are delicious). And, of course, you can't leave without a cup of Colombian coffee after dinner! All in all, a small, highly authentic (what with the decorations and the cumbia music playing in the background), absolutely delicious gem of a restaurant in Jackson Heights, just 2 blocks from the 74th street station. There are about 8 tables, but the food tastes better than the appearance. You come in and they take your order right away. The salads are good. I've visited this restaurant a few times already. I always order the "mini" bandeja and a Colombiana. I love the fact that there's a lot to choose from on their menu and I personally don't eat a lot so I'm glad there's a size option for most entrees. Overall, food is OK. The wait staff have always gotten my order right (I have specific preferences like "without beans") but the only thing that leaves me unsatisfied is that every time I go there, I would speak in Spanish out of habit and they would ALWAYS respond in English even though their English is extremely limited. Every time the waitress tried to speak, I can sense her getting flustered and unsure of what to say next. I mean, I am a FLUENT Spanish speaker and whenever I go out to eat at a restaurant, I try to maintain the culture. They seem to have judged my Asian appearance a little too quickly. To put this in a simple perspective, a meal at a restaurant is not only about the taste of the food but the overall experience. Here I am, speaking in fluent Spanish and the waitress emotionlessly utters a few English words in response (ok, enjoy, thank you) meanwhile she walks over to other tables smiling and initiating informal small talk to other customers in Spanish. The service just isn't the same but I still leave them a nice tip every time. read more
