We were in the area to see the sights of this quaint town. It was shortly after lunch when we stopped in. The atmosphere is nice, very historic. The service was ok. I can't say it was bad nor excellent. The food was good. We had the reubean sandwich, grilled cheese with tomato soup, and tips with spaetzle. We were visiting Galena over Thanksgiving and came into Green Street for a drink before (and after) dinner. Green Street is a fun and friendly place. It has a great history, which is documented in the bar/hotel. We didn't specifically eat here, but we did eat in the hotel which I imagine is made in the same kitchen by the same staff, and it was excellent. But more specifically, the bar is great, the drinks are creative and delicious, and the prices are reasonable for a touristy area in a small town hotel bar. There are also TV's around the bar showing sports or music videos, but they are non-intrusive. But the standout is the staff. The bartender was amazing, funny, creative and helpful. The servers were similarly awesome. If you're in town, definitely swing by and have a drink. Remember to be nice to the staff and I promise they will be nice to you. read more

The location is a cute corner bar in the DeSoto hotel. We came for a late-ish dinner on a Friday night and they offered the menu for Green Street Tavern AND the General's Restaurant (lower level of DeSoto). Peppermint martinis were the featured drink, we each started with one and enjoyed them! My husband and I each ordered steaks from the General's menu and they were delicious! We had a beyond delightful lunch at the tavern yesterday. Our waitress was soooo nice and attentive, and kept making sure we have everything we needed. The tavern is attached to the hotel and is absolutely gorgeous inside. If you're in Galena for the day, I def recommend stopping in and getting something. My coffee was nice and strong, and the pick me up I needed in my life. I had the turkey ciabatta sandwich and the aioli was beyond delish. Went here on a Saturday night for dinner. The place wasn't overly busy, so it was nice to get to choose where we wanted to sit. Our server was quick to come get our order and was overall pretty laid back. We ended up getting the tips & spaetzle and the shrimp po boy. The spaetzle was completely adequate and the beef tips had a rich flavor. I can see why it's a house specialty as something you don't see on most menus. The po boy was fine, but I wouldn't say an authentic one. The filling to bun ratio was also a little off. I was excited to see that the sweet potato fries were waffle fries and they had a nice crisp to them. Overall, the service was good, food was fine, but the price for the food was a little too high for what you got. Green Street Tavern has potential (the location is terrific and the the hotel is cool), but OMGosh the service was beyond terrible. We were there for 1.5 hours due to the extremely slow service. There were no changes made to the 3 meals we ordered and we had to flag the server down for refills, which she literally heard as she was walking past the table. My friend had to yell it at her as she was zooming by. The food was just ok. One of the three of us said their meal was good. There are ton of other options in the area, so I recommend to keep walking to find something better. read more

We went to Dubuque for a one night stay and went here for lunch. We sat at a cozy table right near a fireplace and it was delightfully warm. The waitress we had was definitely not the friendliest waitress we have had and actually she bordered on grumpy. She was not extremely attentive either. For food we had the beef tips with spatzle noodles and we had the onion haystack, fish tacos and the Cuban sandwich, and the Mac and cheese. Our meals were all fairly good. The service was very good in the welcoming to the restaurant and the taking of the order, though lagged after that (I had to ask for the bill and then also remind them to take the payment 15 minutes later). The food had its high points and low points. None of the food was bad, but the NY Strip steak was bland, as was the jasmine rice. On the other hand, the asparagus was well cooked and seasoned, and the starting focaccia was a bright spot. The compounded butter was good, but a slight surprise that it had more than simple herbs and garlic, and had shallots included. I know people that have digestive issues with onions and shallots, so despite the fact I enjoyed the butter, it would be good to let folks know what would be in a complex compounded butter. Perhaps it was the care of the complexity of the butter that made the rice seem so boring. The space itself is nice, well maintained in a historic building. Overall, I would potentially return, would not order the rice again, and if I ordered a steak again, I would hope for a better prepared one. read more

We came here on a Tuesday in mid-May around 5pm. I'd say it was about half full in the tavern area where we ate. We were promptly seated and served upon arriving. Our waitress was very cordial and prompt. We had no issues getting refills or our food. The food itself was great! We had the fried cheese curds (which I've never had until then) and boy, if they all taste like this, then I found a new delicious treat! However, my wife brought me back to reality by reminding me that we're right next to Wisconsin, so I'm unlikely to get such fresh delicious-tasting cheddar elsewhere. Into the main entrees: I had the Cuban (which is a house special) and my wife had bbq wings. I never had a Cuban before, but I'm glad I tried it here. Fresh pulled pork, fresh ham, cheddar cheese, spicy brown mustard and a delicious cream cheese spread (I held the pickles, and I'm glad I did. They were pickled with white onions, so the pickles themselves had an onion aftertaste). The pub fries were just run of the mill, but a nice side for the sandwich. My wife enjoyed her wings with the house BBQ. She said the sauce had a great flavor. It was extra appealing because as guests of DeSoto House we were given drink tokens to spend on a non F-Su before 8. It covered almost all drinks. We arrived in town in the late afternoon and popped in for dinner. I got the shrimp po-boy and husband the burger. The food was pretty good, but not outstanding. Our first round of drinks were cocktails, my personal rec is to stick with wine or beer. I got an Aperol Spritz and he a Manhattan. His Manhattan wasn't great, my drink was fine. I had the cheeseburger and it was delicious. The fries were good. They cooked it rare like I prefer. My husband ordered the Reuben and was happy with it. The Green Street Tavern & Restaurant is beautiful however I would not advise eating there in the summertime. We have been by the DeSoto House many times and always talked about eating there so we were glad when they had a reservation open on our most recent trip. The food was ok but we were all so grossed out by the number of flies everywhere including in our face and landing on our plates, we just couldn't really eat it. They were killing flies all over the place, using their hands (yes we watched a staff member clap her hands kill a fly and continue on), a server used a pamphlet to kill a fly on the wall then picked the squished fly off the wall and throw it away, they were using a fly swatter in the room with all the condiments in it then they hung it back on the wall. I asked if it was normal for them to have so many flies and was told "Oh yeah, last summer they were even worse." The service was good the food came out in a timely manner and was plated very pretty is all I can tell you. read more

For food, the DeSoto Hotel has this restaurant as casual and General's for more upscale. Kind of neat! Same kitchen. We just ordered appetizers and had delicious pulled pork quesadillas, friend cheese curds, and wings. All very good and would get them again! Oh! We also had a cup of the blue-cheese soup! Yum! We thought the history of the establishment was very interesting such as Abraham Lincoln ate at this restaurant and stayed at the connected hotel while he was campaigning. We were seated rather quickly and ordered our food. Service was nice, but not overly bearing. There weren't a ton of people in the restaurant. I got the green street burger. It was cooked well, but super salty. In fact, everything was a little too salty. My daughter got the chicken tenders and those were super salty as well .Overall, you could definitely eat the food, I just wish they took back the salt a little bit. The portions were pretty big, so we didn't need to get more food. The history was really cool though. They have old newspaper clippings as part of their decor and the color scheme reminds me of an old school tavern. The hotel is conjoined with the restaurant, so going there you can see part of the history. Obviously there have been some changes since the 1800s, but it was still neat to experience. read more

Can't say I was a fan of this place. I had the chicken and white bean chili in a bread bowl. The chili tasted like something straight out of a can and was also lukewarm. On the specials menu it also said it came with cheddar cheese blocks on the side- it didn't and we had to remind the waiter two times to bring it out. My boyfriend ordered the mac and cheese with homemade beef chili and a side of garlic bread. This wasn't bad...but mac and cheese you can't really mess up and there was the smallest scoop of chili on top of everything. This dish was $10 and so was mine, which I think was very overpriced for the portion and quality of the food we received. My other friend had the reuben sandwich with a side of garlic fries. He commented on how salty his whole meal was and when I just looked at his fries, you can see the actual salt on it- that's how much there was on it. I like the restaurant setting itself and how it's set up, and I do like the environment and how cozy it feels. But everything else was lackluster and I would try a different place to eat in this area the next time I'm around. read more

The place looks great and super cozy but regrettably that's where it ends. Let's get into this We stopped in after a wonderful afternoon exploring the town. The place was beautiful, very nice fire place and such a nice ambiance it set a nice bar for itself. The food. The BBQ burger was ok, it did not have much sauce on it and lacked the BBQ flavor but oh well I can still eat it. My lady had the cordon blue, it looked great and the sauce was creamy however it lacked flavor, further the ham was nonexistent. Moving to the tips & spaetzle the sauce was rich but meet seemed under cooked and chewy. The service. I asked the lady for a local IPA, what did I get a bottle of Wisconsin beer. I was disappointed but enjoyed the beverage. My lady ordered a hot cider it came out lukewarm. All in all the place was not good. Ordered carryout on 3/29/23. Four of us decided to try the House Specialty "Tips and Spaetzle" which states that it is "a house favorite for many years". Portion size was small and it was not visually appealing. Rich burgandy sauce in reality was a thick brown flavorless sauce on top of mushy (not authentic) spaetzle. Vegetables were good. The four of us counted the pieces of beef tips in our meal and we each only had four pieces of meat amongst the mushrooms and onions. Fast forward a couple of hours and those in my family who ate the Tips and Spaetzle all had stomach issues afterwards. We stop in the bar here on every trip to Galena, and usually several times, b/c I like the bar atmosphere and the bartenders are always friendly and helpful. I just drink beer, but my wife does drinks and they are always made expertly, and seem to cost less than many of the other bars in town. I love the beer cooler on the back wall that leads to the dining room. Lots of wood, very old, very detailed and interesting if you like old stuff, which I do. We had the onion haystack as an appetizer. It was fine. The only flavor was from the dipping sauce, but the onions were crispy. Then our meal arrived- a Cuban sandwich that didn't taste or present as anything Cuban. The flavors were all wrong and the sandwich wasn't pressed, which is a hallmark of a Cuban sandwich. I had a shrimp po' boy that was so bland. The only flavor was from the siracha mayo. The potato salad side was in desperate need of salt. It was like the food was about 80% there but they just didn't go that extra amount to make it actually good. And then the bill came. It was WAY too expensive for what we got. The service was fine. Even with the nostalgia of our 20th anniversary, it was not worth it. Skip this one. read more

We spent a few days in Galena and stopped in the tavern for a couple of beers. Our bartender was attentive and had a sense of humor so we would stop in each afternoon to cool down from the heat and humidity. We only had one meal at the tavern Saturday afternoon and sat outside. Our server - I think her name was Sam - was swamped. She was the only server working outside and was constantly stopped by passers by asking questions about the restaurant, menu, even directions to other places. She still managed to take great care of all her tables despite constant distractions. We also had a couple of breakfasts in the Courtyard and received equally attentive service both times.
