My sister told me to try this place for the "bacalao con verduras" which is a plate we grew up on growing up. It's salted cod fish with starchy root vegetables like yucca, malanga (taro) and boiled green bananas (not plantains). I'll admit it's an acquired taste. Los Bravos is a small restaurant with a modest amount of seating, very tight parking and a very friendly staff. Food is on display in a hot cafeteria style setting. Very clean. You can see into kitchen too and it was clean. Muy importante! There were a few families eating inside and their eye catching plates came fresh out of the kitchen stacked high and with care. They were out of the 'bacalao guisado' that I wanted so I had to settle for a cold cod salad style. It was still tasty. The medium plate cost $8 and was a very generous serving. Knowing from experience how much work it is to peel those tough starchy vegetables and how much they cost, I think it was a great value. It was certainly enough to share or save for a second meal. Another hot box had the "frituras" which are all of our fried goodies. I bought a "relleno de papa" which is a soft ball size fried mashed potato ball, filled with seasoned ground beef. It was good. Perhaps a tiny tiny bit over salted but negligible and seemingly made of the instant potatoes which is not that uncommon. My dad used the instant at his restaurant 'back in the day' only because the potato balls seem to stay together better during frying. There was a cold box where flan and other desserts were on display along with the cold salads of octopus "pulpo", the cod fish and escabeche. The cashier gave me their card and told me about the different kind of sandwiches and mofongo they offer. She also told me that anything could be called in ahead to be ready for pick up. Open 7 days a week. Oh, please don't worry about a language barrier. I speak Spanish but until the cashiers English was perfect. All the Puerto Rican special soda and drinks were available. I'm giving Los Bravos 3 stars until I try other items on the menu. I definitely want to return and try some of their other dishes and also have a hunch that I may need to bump it up a star----but for me that will depend on the rice and roast pork! I have tried other places in the area for Spanish food but it was my first time here. It was a good thing that i have been to places like Fernandez in Holyoke because their menu here was totally in Spanish, so i knew what to order. All their choices are visible to you at the counter, so you can basically point to what you want if their is a language barrier. I chose Spanish pork along with rice and beans. Pork was a little dry and not very flavorful as i have been accustomed to in the past with Spanish pork. Rice and beans were average. I should warn others who may try this place that the oversize jars that they keep on table, which are full of garlic, peppers, oil, is very spicy. Received $5 worth of food for $6.59... Not a bad price to pay for lunch. The rice & beans were very good. I would of rated them higher but, they basically served me bones as my "meat". Also, they took a long time to serve. Also, I said "For here" and she wasn't listening & put my food in styrofoam.. I HATE styrofoam!!! Being an Arizonan desperate for Mexican food, I figured a stop into Los Bravos would abate the cravings. I don't/didn't know too much about Puerto Rican cuisine, so I was definitely in for a surprise. The parking is very limited (right off of a BUSY St. James Avenue), and the seating inside is small, but accommodating. They are handicapped accessible. You can order off-menu or off the hot food line, not unlike your local grocer's deli. Since I had no idea what to order, I simply pointed to something on the hot food line-- is this pork? beef? "No, chicken."-- and got a side of rice to go with it. I did recognize the words "Tres Leches" on the menu, and asked for a slice of that... though the language barrier required several attempts. What I think I ended up getting was pollo asado and white rice (can't be sure, due to the point and pick). The pollo asado was nicely flavored and the sauce picked up an otherwise bland pile of rice. There were quite a few tiny chicken bones scattered throughout the to-go box, so eat with caution! The tres leches cake was "OK", definitely not top-notch, but passable. I also got an India grape soda-- a bit different than Crush in that it has a coconut flavor to it. For a little over $10, I got a pretty tasty bite to eat for lunch (including dessert). I got a tip from a Puerto Rican chef working in a local college about this place so naturally I was intrigued and paid Los Bravos a visit. I was there that day only for a quick snack, nothing major and ordered an alcapurria which is a fried ground meat fritter of the following tubers: yuca, green bananas or green plantains. I can't say for sure what the mixture was but I can tell you for sure that it was very good. The exterior was extremely crunchy and the meat filling very nicely flavored with Island spices. I ordered a Malta India soft drink to wash it down and was particularly pleased with the delightfully subtle malt beverage flavor. I will go back for lunch one day as I was very interested in the large verity of prepared beef,pork, chicken, goat, fish and rice dishes I saw on the serving line. This place is destined, I believe, for a Four Star review and should be considered very Auténtica comida Puertorriqueña. read more

We went on a Saturday night and the place was packed with young families. We were told we could wait for our table at the bar and that someone would come get us on 10-15 minutes. Over 30 minutes later someone found us and told us they had called our name 15 minutes ago (which they did not and no one came to get us). When they finally sat us it was at a table across from a clown who was doing face painting and making balloons for kids. It was really CROWDED and tumultuous in that area but we were told that there was no where else for us to sit. It took a long while for a server to come to us. When we finally did order our food did not arrive until 45 minutes later. We were told by the sever and the manager that the kitchen was slammed but they never offered us a drink, or offered to compensate us for having to wait so long. The food, when it arrived, was subpar. I ordered salmon, which was very fishy tasting. The best part of the meal was the fresh vegetables. When our bill came there was no adjustment for having to wait so long for our food. We did not feel taken care of at all and were made to feel like we should have been grateful to finally get our food. We will not be returning to this place. read more
