We got off the plane and Amy and Rick picked us up and we were starving so we just went straight to Red Rose Pizza in Springfield. It's that old school Italian place brick walls big booths stained glass and you can see them making dough right in the front which I always like for some reason. We started with the house salad and it was actually really good and the warm rolls came out and we were already gobbling them sand the salad down! Then the pizza came and it was HUGE like not even kidding and pepperoni and they really don't skimp on it good cheese, crust had those little charred spots I like and I was honestly shocked we ate the whole thing and didn't take anything home at all I thought for sure we would. Service was really good too our waitress was on it kept drinks filled even though it was busy. The place was hopping at 5:30 on a Sunday evening. We were in town to see Chelsea Handler and I'm glad we got there early. They gave us a buzzer, told us it would be about 25 minutes, and we went into the bar to have a glass of wine and wait. I must say the chaos was beautifully controlled. Lots of room in the bar, and a spot to order drinks if you couldn't get a seat at the bar. Generous pour on the wine. And sure enough, about 25 minutes later our table was ready. Waitress was friendly, helpful, professional. Servings were more than ample. Fried calamari appetizer was delicious, crispy, not at all greasy. My daughter really enjoyed her chicken dish. I, however, was disappointed, and I blame myself. I should know better than to order eggplant at a restaurant. If I'm ordering eggplant rollatini, I'd like to taste the eggplant. I don't know why restaurants insist on slicing it so thin that you can't actually taste the eggplant, just the breading. It's not that it's an expensive ingredient, it's gotta be cheaper than the cheese....anyway, I'd go back but hopefully I have learned my lesson - if I want to taste eggplant, I'll cook it myself. read more

This was a place I have longingly admired and wanted to try since arriving in Amherst to go to college in 1994. Well, 32 years after arriving in Western Mass, I finally had my chance. Love the iconic feel. The place is clean and updated, but the walls hang on to the 60+ years of history. Love the menu. Has enough to please anyone, but not a page-turner. They know what they stand for. Love the service. Fantastic. Real. Authentic. Local. Ordered the world famous house salad, the zuppq di clams, and a small pizza (which is not small). Salad and clams - FANTASTIC. Worth the drive from Watertown CT. Pizza... fresh. Hot. Made with care...but as a NJ native who now lives on the outskirts of New Haven... definitely not my style. Upon arrival, the establishment was packed. Nice and simple decor. I was immediately seated and was greeted by the wait staff. My order was placed shortly after hearing the waitress' recommendations and favorites. The plain pie came out, thin and well done, exactly how I like it. This place is massive on the inside and there is parking behind the restaurant! I didn't realize this and parked across the street. It was only $7.50 for 2 hours, but go for the free! We were sat immediately at about noon on a Saturday. Our server was very nice and helpful. Bread came out and it was very floofy and yummy. I wish it was warm, but I took a bit to get to it. We got mozzarella sticks, but it's more like 4 slabs! Not a complaint - just info. They were yummy and the sauce is good; more rustic but it was nice. I got the chicken parm and my friend got the Alfredo. She said hers was really good. I do like their chicken parm - I wish the chicken was more pounded down, but the flavor was good. They also have really good portions. All together, the bill was around $70 so a little spendy for me for a lunch. Company was great and service was great. It also was a good volume in there for how large it was. You can actually have a conversation in there. Just when you think you have good Italian in Florida, you go to the Northeastern US and realize how far off they are down south. This family owned restaurant in the shadows of the MGM Springfield was excellent in so many ways. First, great service... gotta love a welcoming staff and friendly wait-staff. They were prompt and explained things and were patient as we tried to decide what we wanted. Second was that salad! OMFG how can a salad be that good AF? It was fresh and cold and properly dressed and tossed and had enough olives that we weren't fighting over them! Take that Olive Garden! Third were the meatballs! I'm a fan of tender balls that aren't too dense and these were perfectly done. So moist and in a delicious sauce for dipping... Fourth was the bread! They brought out like 10 slices for 3 people. WTF people? So friggin generous with portions. And butter!!! Not that pretentious oil with herbs and vinegar! Churn baby Churn all over that delicious bread! Finally, that pizza... oh boy oh boy oh boy! So crispy and garlicky and delicious and crispy. We did the Margherita which wasn't the traditional style, but who cares. I'd go back in a heartbeat! What can I say... I'm a millennial who loves nostalgia. So when it came time to meet up with a dear friend back home, where else would we meet but Red Rose? We've both celebrated many a special occasion here in the 90s and this time was no different. I was extremely happy to see that absolutely nothing had changed. That kind of reliability is exactly what you want from your favorite restaurant back home. You basically want to leave it in a time capsule and walk back in after 30 years to find it right as you had left it. The place was bustling per usual. The server was fantastic. The wine was great. The house salad and house dressing were so good they made me want to scarf down vegetables. But the meatball grinder... THE MEATBALL GRINDER!!! (I now live in a place where we call them subs, but nothing compares to a good grinder.) It was culinary perfection: the bread was golden and crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. The perfect balance of bread, sauce, cheese, and meatball. And the flavor of the meatball itself was perfectly seasoned and balanced. Red Rose was recommended as the best restaurant in town to go to from our hotel staff. The restaurant is big with lots of seating, including a separate room for bar seating. Great and friendly service. Had good conversations with our waitress as we were from out of town. Chicken Picatta. I get that one of the key flavors in this dish is lemon, but they really overdid it. Every bite was straight up lemon. Tried some of my friends pizza and it also was not that good. The best part of the meal was the salad. Service was great, but the food...meh. I ordered pizza and was expecting a nice thin crust. Not so. It was mediocre at best and the sauce was not very tasty. Recently attended a Logistics Reunion luncheon w 12 other people. We get together twice yearly, always at the Red Rose. Communal salads, communal pizzas, communal pitchers or you can order off the menu. RR has been a fixture in downtown Springfield for decades. Consistently good food, always really good service, fair prices. One thing that kinda rankles me. They serve bread / rolls room temperature when they have so many pizza ovens. Why? It's the little things that keep them from rating a 5 (especially when most other comparable Italian restaurants put warm bread on the table). 4 stars read more

This review is for a takeout order for a large group. I called the evening before to place an order and they were very accommodating in terms of taking my order and payment the day before. I ordered a few pizzas and pasta dishes, plus the house salad. Upon arrival for pick up everything was ready to go, and they even helped me out to my car. The food was very tasty. The fettuccine Alfredo was the most popular dish among the two spaghetti's one with marinara and one with meat sauce. The pizza was pretty tasty, my favorite part was the crust. I'm from New York and visited my friend in the area and lunch was her choice and came to Red Rose. It was a Great choice. Famous with their pizza and it was completely different from my favorite NY thin crust pizza but medium thickness but great pizza. Their dough was tasty and baked right, sauce was just right taste and amount as well as the cheese. It came out slight charred which was actually perfect and therefore bottom was crispy. I order small but it was 15-16" size, means usually Large at most pizza places. I also had lunch menu pasta with shrimp, this was another hit. I need to try other menus that mean I may need to come weekly. I important things is that you better watch when you get check. I've gotten check from other table and didn't find the mistake until I got home. I paid mistakenly too much but the price was still cheaper than New York. Still watch out!!!!! read more

I ordered a chopped claim dinner w/linguine off the luncheon menu. I was told by our waitress that it didn't include a salad, so I ordered one. It was served in a very small plastic bowl, unlike the larger china salad bowl they previously used. I also asked for more sauce. When we got our bill, we were shocked to have been charged $9.74 for a tossed salad and $2.25 for a spoonful or two of extra marinara sauce. The portions of pasta have gotten smaller and the prices keep going up. What a RIPOFF! They also don't even give you one free refill of soda, and charge $2.50. We have been going to Red Rose since it opened in 1965. Going forward, we will drive to an Italian restaurant in Hartford, CT and no longer be ripped off by the Caputo family. read more

What can I say about this place? Just amazing. It's always been good that I've never been let down. I haven't gone there in a year. I've been busy. I haven't gone down to Springfield but when I do go, it's a great meal and what I liked about it when I see a lot of people in line and they're overbooked that shows me how good of a restaurant it is just staff there is very tentative. They pay attention to you even though they're running around trying to please everybody which they do a great job at the you know it's all right. It's a clean Restaurant very loud though I would recommend putting up some on the ceiling put some sound equipment. You can just put it on your ceilings and it will bring down the noise so when you're having a conversation, you can actually hear your person thank you so everything is great thank you. read more

Start off with staff. Our server was great, don't remember her name. Came in with family for my 1st time. Started off risotto balls, they was good the marina sauce was sweet and very good. I got penne with chicken, broccoli, olive oil and garlic. Taste was good. I put this dish in my top 3 that I have had from other places. Garlic was sliced big or the bulb which I don't mind. Could have have less oil. The rest got pizza, I tried a slice and not bad. Tortellini in Alfredo sauce, they loved it. Not big portion but he loved it and took the rest of the sauce home and my cousin got a steak and cheese sandwich. I go here for birthdays and celebrations as my mom's family is from Naples and my family lives close to Springfield. We usually spend at least 300 dollars and leave a 40% tip. My mom's family lived on Union Street after moving from Naples. Last night, some 20 something-year-old girl that is working there told me if he comes late cannot sit with us and have some cake because there is not space for him around the table. A wall of fancy mirrors, wood paneling, brick wall, murals of Italian feasts, etc... It's loud though as this place holds a lot of people and parties going on all around at regular tables. First off I ALWAYS appreciate a place where a salad is built into their meal price and bread! And let's talk about their prices- on par with other places but they give you the salad! The salad- their own Italian dressing and a good amount of parmesan cheese. It was delicious! The pizza- cut in squares (not a huge fan of this but it's their thing so I show respect.) A lot of dough but not too much. I actually enjoyed the pizza (it's not my favorite but I would definitely have it again. Great sauce to cheese ratio and plenty of pepperoni. We went with a medium and it fed 5 people ( 2 picked as they had an entree.) I had the chicken parm. Big portion, lots of cheese and sauce YES! Pizza! Heck yeah! But also... Ok, hold on, their salad. I know you wouldn't think it! But their salad with a slice of that homemade bread is fire, just don't get too carried away otherwise you won't have room for pizza. Is there such a thing as too much cheese? I'll let you decide. We ordered extra cheese on our "medium" pie and it was Oooozing! (see pics for reference) Also, let's talk about sizes for a second. When you order a medium here, understand that it's going to come with 16 slices (I think) and they're not like circular, its square cut. Four of us ate and we still had like half the pizza leftover. Great crust, good taste, this is a great pie for sure. It's the tomato sauce that is just perfect. We also ordered the shrimp app and it was great. All of us were so full by the time we were done that our previous aspirations of ordering dessert were knocked out of the options arena. Beautiful old building that has been there since 1963. The dining room is massive with huge crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceilings and hand painted murals of the old world on the walls. The original owners have since passed but we found out that the children who are a brother and sister team are now running the show, and what a great job they're doing of it. Meh. We came from out of town and came here due to a recommendation. We parked in their lot easily and were seated right away on a Saturday afternoon. Our waitress was very personable. It is a large space but kind of outdated. It was clean and bright though so that's good. We had the garlic bread which I wouldn't recommend. It seemed like slices of cheese were just melted between 2 pieces of bread and sort of served like grilled cheese. We also tried the calamari which was fine but not stand out. Lastly we had the Hawaiian pizza which was a good size and I did like the square cuts as that's more my size of a piece of pizza. The best part was that it was my son's birthday so we purchased a slice of cake and 5 wait staff came and sang to him and put a candle in the cake. I come here every time I go to six flags or come in the area because this restaurant is so good it's really big so there's a lot of seating and it's still always packed that's how good it is you definitely will be waiting a little bit to get a seat. They do not take reservations. There is a parking lot in the back but that also fills up and they'll send you across the street and that parking is only free until a certain time. Otherwise it's on street parking or you can park at the casino and walk on over. The pizza is really good I like the sauce and the toppings the marinara sauce for the garlic bread is thicker and different than the sauce and the pizza The garlic bread is really good with and without cheese I personally prefer it without the cheese but it was just also good with it it basically just comes right off though. read more
