Found this place while in a tournament in Durham I was really craving tacos so the girls and I came to this establishment based on their Google reviews that were their previous. We were greeted very pleasantly. It wasn't too busy yet as it just turned to lunch the waitress gave some really great suggestions. Even though our interaction was within with one waitress, it still set the vibe that everybody in this establishment really enjoys working here. The atmosphere was very welcoming and definitely set the mood for all the margaritas and tacos that we could possibly want. The food itself very flavourful. I visited this restaurant on a whim to satisfy a craving for Mexican food. Having never been here before, I was delighted by the friendly staff with their attentive service. The portions were very large for the price, with half my chimichanga burrito taken home at the end of the meal. I enjoyed the sides, they were there but didn't really stand out. The in-house made nachos were deliciously crispy and salty, pairing well with the Queso, Guacamole and Pico De Gallo. The Burrito as I mentioned was huge and expertly fried. The Barbacoa inside was perfectly cooked, full of flavour. I wish my Margarita had more punch though, it was barely noticeable in the entire experience. What was noticeable was the decor which feels dated from 15 years ago. Overall, decent, I would return. read more

Was craving Mexican food and thought this place would hit the spot but it did not. We got a few plates to go via takeout order and also got a cocktail at the bar. First off, the decor and vibes were nice. I liked the details and space was cozy. Got a cocktail with half pina colada and half strawberry daquarie mixed with ice (2/5). I have to say it tasted mostly of ice, wasn't very sweet and I forced myself to finish half so I am not wasting my money. They could use more syrup and more bleeding of the ice. The chips and 3 dip trio was okay. We got the guacamole which didn't taste like they make them in house but rather the premade mushy squeeze type and the salsa was watery. I give this dish 3/5. Then we got the ceviche and this was probably the tastiest dish with a solid 4/5. It tasted fresh and seafood was tender. Then we got the steak taco which comes with rice and beans. Both the rice and beans were super salty I was only able to have a bite each and had to dump them out. I don't know if they usually taste like that or it's a random case of over seasoning but couldn't eat it. The steak tacos were okay.... It was hard to chew and pico de gaillo had no flavour and was dry. Give this dish 2/5. Also got the ground beef taco and again, a serious case of over seasoning and couldn't eat it. I give this one at 1/5. Overall, didn't enjoy the experience and most of the food was a miss for us. We normally eat at various Mexican restaurants around the GTA and in Mexico so was excited to try this place in Durham region but it just didn't work out for us. read more

Over all was a mediocre experience. We ordered the nachos with the chorizo cheese dip, which was a nice stringly cheezie dish that was served warm and gooey until the last chip was dipped. This was impressive. The chicken and rice, came with veggies and salsa, most of the food on the plate was bland, but the chicken was a little salty. I had the lumba enchiladas, the dish was also quite flavourless, but came with rice, salad, and refried beans. For our drinks we ordered the cowabunga, spicy margarita, and jalapeño drink. Updated review. We came here for lunch. We made a reservation at 12 pm. We arrived earlier, and the server seated us right away. We ordered the steak fajitas $24 and Playa sur fish tacos. The food did take a little bit longer to come out, which was surprising since we were the first customers here. The steak fajitas you get a checklist to choose 6 condiments. We chose black beans, spicy cheese sauce, pico de gallo, cheese, salsa verde, and sour cream. The grated cheese wasn't too fresh. You get 4 large flour tortillas to make your fajitas. The steak was served on a sizzling plate with lots of sauteed onions and sliced bell peppers. Steak was seasoned well, and this dish is probably enough to serve 2 people. The playa sur fish tacos was a bit disappointing. There was lots of creamy coleslaw, pico de gallo, and citrus cilantro crema. I found it hard to taste the actual fish with all the toppings. The cod fish lacked seasoning, and the fish was so small. You get spanish rice and refried beans as your sides. The ambiance is nice here. They play mixture latin and country music. When we got the bill, we tried to use a 25% off offer from Fido extra - diningdeals.ca. The server wasn't aware of this discount and went to the back to ask her manager. When she returned, she said that Los Cabos does not accept this coupon offer. I was disappointed and would have liked the manager to come out and explain why they won't accept it. Instead, it was left to the server to explain it. The server did take a picture of my voucher on my phone and will show it to the owner to contact dining deals and remove the offer. Coming from a customer service background, I think the restaurant should have honored the voucher or offered 10% off the bill. The 2 items came up $40 plus tax and tip we paid $50.50. This place came strongly recommended by friends. I dropped in on a stormy week night. The reception was friendly and cordial. I was pretty hungry so I asked which plate was the most hearty out of the fish dishes. I was referred to two popular dishes. I chose the grilled fish tacos. Service was quick. I was disappointed at the size of the plate. The flavours were good. Nice presentation. The beans and rice were quite good. I just wanted more. I ordered a side salad to help fill me up. I like this place. I'm not going to say I love it, but I definitely like it. Good selection on the menu. Prices are a bit high, but the serving sizes are massive so you get what you pay for. Could use more seating but they're limited by the size of the restaurant. So definitely call ahead to ensure you can get a table. The ambiance in here is unique and fun. My husband and I stopped here for lunch and overall I was disappointed. I found the portions small and the food was way too salty for my tastes. However, service was quick and efficient, and the place has a cool Tex-Mex meets surfer dude kind of vibe. Chips were warm and crispy and the salsa was chunky and good. I got the lunch enchilada ($9.99). You can choose beef, chicken, pork or vegetarian, and I chose beef. It came with beans, rice and salad. My husband got the lunch special ($11.99). You get to choose 1 main (a quesadilla or 3 types of tacos), a side (salad, rice and beans, fries or sweet potato fries, or 3 types of soups), and a drink (coffee, tea, water or pop). My husband got the Playa Sur taco (grilled fish), sweet potato fries, and a coffee. They brought out a bunch of hot sauces for our meals. My enchilada was stuffed full of shredded beef, but unfortunately, I found it so salty. The rice was unbearably salty to me. I had 1 mouthful and couldn't even eat the rest. The beans were ok, the least salty thing on my plate. The salad was just shredded iceberg lettuce with some diced tomatoes on top, but did they sprinkle salt on it?? Why was my salad salty?!? I was so sad!!! My husband's meal was so small! Just a handful of sweet potato fries and 1 lone taco. The fries were good though. They were hot and crispy. The taco was really messy and it had too much cilantro for the hubster. He was sad too :( I liked the decor. There were sombreros on the walls and other knick knacks. The washroom doors had surfboards on them and were labeled "Babes" and "Dudes", lol. There's a sizable bar, and their cocktails sounded good. Maybe it's a cool place for just some drinks. I was on my way to meet some friends at a Mexican restaurant in Whitby when they called and said the place was closed. We already in Whitby and had Mexican food on our minds so a quick search brought us to Los Cabos. Our server brought us a complimentary bowl of nachos and salsa to start and we also ordered the guacamole. The guacamole was a bit bland but it was a lot better after we added some lemon juice, salt, pepper, and hot sauce. For entrees, we ordered the Big D's Burrito Platter with beef, the Caribbean Mahi-Mahi, and the Ensenada Enchiladas with chicken. The enchiladas and burrito were huge portions! My companions said they tasted good. I had the mahi-mahi and I had some issues with the dish. Some of the rice was crunchy, as in burnt. The fish "filet" had some bones in it. I know, it's fish, it can happen. Beyond the tropical salsa topping, however, the fish didn't have much flavour. It could have used more seasoning. I probably won't be back for the food but if I'm in the area, I may drop in for drinks. read more

Went there for the first time today with my husband for a late lunch/early dinner. The service was amazing - and the patio has great ambiance. We ordered a "Firecracker"-something appetizer that was good, as long as you ate the "salad"/pico de gallo garnish with it - some kind of sweet dressing on it that made the dish complex. Without it, they were a little plain. Basically roasted corn and black beans rolled in a fried tortilla, kind of missing something until you add the "salad". By the name, I expected something spicy - my error, I guess. The food was hot and fresh, but not really to my taste - everything we ordered seemed to be lacking salt, or something. And I never want to put salt or hot sauce on *anything*, not even eggs. Mind you, low salt is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you have high blood pressure, but I was kind of disappointed with the flavor and having to use the hot sauce to get anything to seem like it wasn't missing something. Even the beans and rice were a bit bland. That said, I would still likely go back again - as I said, the service was stellar - but I don't think I'd order dinner. We found this little nook last yr when driving around our new neighbourhood and we've been back numerous times and brought our friends along with us. The nachos are huge!! Make sure u have tons of friends to share with, my husband loves the fish tacos, my son loves what he calls their very Mexican chicken fingers and i love their Taco salad. We have also tried their fajitas - love how they let you pick a bunch of toppings. They give u a little paper to fill it in. We have also tried their burrito and deep fried ice cream. They have live entertainment (havent been) on weekend at night. Quaint Mexican restaurant on a busy street in Whitby. Stopped by without reservations and were seated on the patio. Staff worked quickly and were able to help us pick popular menu items. Our order of fish tacos came out swiftly and tasted great! They were served with a side of rice and a bean purée. I have been here several times this year and the service and food is always great. I've been a loyal customer for years and even after the new owner took over the quality and service have continued to exceed expectations. All my old favorites are still on the menu as well as a few new ones. The biggest thing is they still have a great selection of hot sauces. I don't think I would continue going if they lost that. My favorites are the chimichanga and build your own nachos. The chimichanga comes with rice and beans and a little bit of salad. If you're less hungry I recommend the nachos, ground beef,onions, banana peppers,sour cream and guac. Don't forget a lime Margherita to wash it down. read more

Got our first order wrong then challenged us on it. Brought a second order but it wasn't good. Inedible. Didn't eat it and was still charged for it even after manager said she'd discount. Quite possibly the worst Mexican or Tex-Mex food I have ever eaten. I grew up on California mexican food. I have been cooking it for 40 years. I have been making home-made guacamole for 40 years. To be honest, Taco Bell is more satisfying than this overpriced crap. We had the surf and turf chimichanga (dry and boring), the Ensenada enchiladas (dry and boring, although the pork had some flavour), the baja cevice (a mess smothered in store-bought processed guacamole), and the guacamole (not a chance that it is made fresh in-house. likely costco or loblaws) with chips that cannot possibly have been made in-house. All of this garbage for $83 to feed 2 people. I have heard the ownership has changed and that it used to be a great place. It is no longer. Avoid. read more

I had the Big Sur fish tacos and they were amazing! The fresh coleslaw and pico de gallo contrasted well with the deep fried mahi mahi cubes. Having it in a hard taco made for a messy meal. Wish it was on a larger plate. The rice and refrained beans on the side were nothing special. Service was friendly and attentive. Loved the complementary tortilla chips and warm salsa as soon as you sit down. Wanted to order the tuna cerviche, but was told it's not available. Los Cabos - whenever I hear those 2 words I think of a luxurious beachfront Riu resort that's nothing short of luxury. Los Cabos - whenever I hear these 2 words I am going to think local, family restaurant with margaritas that are dripping at the stems and mysterious resemblances of dishes which they dub "Mexican." I will also picture myself being on the Biggest Loser because of the sheer portion sizes of the dishes here. I guess it's either quality or quantity - and here it's definitely quantity. The standard bread basket is replaced with a basket of tortilla chips and salsa. I really loved the spice they sprinkled on the chips, but the salsa was lacking in flavour. Pack in some heat! My standard of measure at any Mexican restaurant are the fish tacos. I ordered the Big Sur Fish Tacos which consists of 2 bland tacos on a heaping bed of rice and heaping scoop of refried beans. Too much batter :p One unique thing was the Margarita Wilson (made with white wine instead of tequila). I ordered the peach one. If there was any peach in it, I'd be surprised. All I tasted was sugar and ice. You probably could've served this to a 4 year-old and they would think that they were drinking juice. Not to mention that the classy plastic cups they were served in were dripping from all corners of the cup. I love Mexican food but this joint needs some serious work in the kitchen. I'm writing this review after 2 visits. Los Cabos has a great patio, great selection of drinks including Margaritas etc and very quick and attentive service. Unfortunately, their grasp of Mexican food isn't top notch. The burritos are decent but on the dry side, the tortilla soup tasted horrible and isn't anywhere in the neighbourhood of what proper Mexican tortilla soup is supposed to be. Tortilla soup is typically a broth based lovely concoction of chicken, tortilla and cilantro but this version was like a very poor chili with awful flavor. I've never seen this version of tortilla soup before. 3 stars because the great setting and service is 5 star but the food is 1 star. read more

So I decided to try this place because I was in the mood for a margarita and they didn't disappoint ...they were great! They started us off with some chips and salsa and to my surprise they were really good... but I'm sure the margarita helped. The menu had lots of unique Mexican/ California items to choose from. It was a toss up between the fish tacos or the Big D. I ended up with the Big D which is a burrito (normal or chimi style) served with rice, salad and re fried beans. It was great, lots of flavor, not to hot, not to mild. The Big D was a massive burrito but of course I managed to clean my plate. :-) All in all, a great experience with good food, great margaritas and friendly staff. Is it weird that I think my dish tasted like Taco Bell? I got something off the lunch specials, but I can't really remember what it was called. It was these two tacos with both hard and soft shell. Came with fries (there were other options too) and soda. I like Taco Bell, but this made me question the authenticity of the place. The portion and price were good though, and I felt myself being comfortably full after the meal. Nachos and salsa were complementary. I don't like nachos, but these were okay. There could also be better service. My waitress didn't really seem that interested in serving us, and I even felt that she was being a little rude (might just be a perception thing though). We happen to be in Whitby and craved Mexican food. While our first choice is always Cielito/Mexico Lindo - we thought we would try something different and boy did this place dissapoint. Other than the friendly server and interesting decor this place was below mediocre. I came with the expectation that this place was serving authentic Mexican food... while the complimentary chips and dip were good to say the least, the rest was downhill from there. My husband ordered the surf and turf chimichunaga and i the fish tacos... rice was stale like it was cooked last night and reheated in the microwave, the chimi was smothered in bbq sauce (is that even a mexican thing?)and my fish tacos were dryyyyy asf. The refried beans were just weird and clumpy?? Very dissapointed and reminded us of those cheap american/mexican restos in florida. Safe to say we will never come back here again. I am pretty sure the resto is not owned and operated or even the food is prepared by mexicans because no way they would let that type of food fly.
