Beef ribs with roasted jalapeno and cactus. Mainly bones and onion
    Jennifer D.

We went there to eat lunch today. We bought one children's meal and two adult meals. The total including tax was over $76. With a tip it was $87. My husband ordered the parillada which had steak, chicken, chorizo, shrimp, pork, cactus and two green onions. It was a little over $22. I ordered the carne asada beef ribs. It was in the steak section of the menu. The description said steaks, ribs, spring onions, cactus and salad. Both of us received a heaped sizzling platter, my husband's was packed with meat, and all the food mentioned. The only onions on his platter were the two green onions. Mine, which was two dollars more expensive than my husbands's meal, was packed with no less than two whole sliced onions, topped with jalapeño, cactus, the two green onions and some beef short ribs. These were very thinly sliced and had huge bones, they had very little meat on them. In some cases, it was just the bones with no meat at all. There was no steak...just the plate bulging with onions and bone slices. Judging by the menu description, I had expected a steak and some short rib slices on top of it. I let the waiter know and he went into the kitchen, then there was a lengthy debate with the kitchen staff and then the girl at the front register. Finally she came over and told me that my steak dish didn't come with steak. She told me it was an error in the menu. I was obviously confused. I had ordered a steak topped with ribs....it clearly said steak....COMMA.....ribs. Even IF these were "steak ribs" and not beef ribs and there was a comma where there shouldn't have been, why then was this in the steak section? I said this to them and they refused to make it right, offering instead to charge us for a steak to go with it. Attached are pictures of the menu, the dish with the ribs and the pile of onions once the thin ribs were gone. I wish I'd taken a picture of my husband's less expensive meal that came with a good portion of steak, chicken, pork, chorizo and at least 6 jumbo shrimp. I despise dishonestly in marketing or presentation so we will not be returning here. But I will bet the "error"on the menu won't be fixed, so be warned if you eat here that at least one of their "steak" meals has no steak. In terms of ambiance, the staff then proceeded to stand around behind our table, make fun of us and insult us in Spanish. Unbeknownst to them, even though I don't look it, I grew up in Mexico and speak fluent Spanish so I understood every word they said. Not at all what you'd expect when paying almost $90 for lunch with tip included. I definitely DON'T recommend eating at a place where honesty and integrity don't exist and where their customers are rewarded with insults and slurs.

We've been to El Vaquero twice now to play trivia. While we enjoy the clean amenities and our…read moretrivia caller, both times, we've all been incredibly unhappy with our food. The restaurant is spacious and gets loud when there's a crowd. Thankfully, there's usually a place for our larger group (6 people) to be seated comfortably. Service is very nice but slow. Trivia runs for a little over an hour and both times our food has taken about 45 minutes to come out, despite our comparatively small orders. My friend who comes to trivia does like the food here (he always gets a beef chimichanga FWIW), but everyone else has now tried several different dishes and not once been satisfied or even just not unhappy. The one shining star has been the cheese dip. It really is pretty good cheese dip, lol. The first time I ordered the chipotle chicken, which is supposed to be chicken in a chipotle sauce. I was firstly surprised and disappointed to see these were small strips of chicken rather than a chicken breast. But that would've been okay...had the chipotle sauce been decent. It had no chipotle flavor and honestly mostly just tasted like sour cream. It was very weird. My parents have tried a beef burrito, beef taco, and chicken taco. They said the beef has an unpleasant metallic taste and the shredded chicken was, according to my dad, inedible. Most recently, my husband got a carne asada burrito and said it tasted so unpleasant he was concerned about whether he should even eat it. Fortunately, no ill effects came about as a result of it; he determined it was ultimately just very low quality meat with an unpleasant texture and taste. My father in law just doesn't order anything except a beer after coming for breakfast once and having a bad time there, too. On my most recent visit, I got a side of rice and beans to eat with chips and cheese dip. The rice had been cooked into sticky, mushy lumps and had no flavor. At this point, I have no idea what to order that might even come close to satisfying my palate. It's disappointing. We may be forced back due to circumstances like our availability in order for us to play our favorite game and have time together. If so, I'll continue to try different things until I can maybe someday find something that works. I want to like this place and wish I had the experience so many other reviewers have had.

We specifically came for margaritas during their social hour. $3 off a set list plus seasonals. There was a table card listing seasonal drinks. I specifically asked our waitress if the Christmas margarita was considered seasonal. She assured me it was, until we got our check and she said it wasn't. I'm not arguing over $6 but $26 for two watered down drinks was not a social hour deal. It's not a deal anywhere. My husband and I shared the three different empanadas gracing the social hour menu. The chicken was delicious, the beef was ok but the fish was fishy. So much so that I didn't even get to a second bite. We ordered chips, salsa and queso for the group. The chips were great - crisp and airy. The queso was good though unremarkable, the green salsa was great. The red was a tad hot for me but everyone else at the table disagreed with me. Husband and I shared the enchiladas verdes. Three chicken enchiladas were served with a plate of nearly tasteless rice. The enchiladas were dry. Even queso didn't help. I ate half of one and my husband didn't even want my second. We didn't take home the leftover enchilada. That pretty much sums them up - not even worthy of a to-go box. With tip, our check was $90. Way too much for such a mediocre meal. We just walked in the door. Hanging up our jackets, we agreed - we won't go back.

And we loved the homemade green and red hot sauces they provided in squirt bottles. The chips and salsa also tasted very fresh, but the amount of salsa was soooo small. It was comical. Would've loved more, especially for the upcharge of $2.99. We would definitely come back and try other options. The owner at the front of the restaurant is polite and very helpful with menu selections. Food/Drink: I ordered a Jamaica (Hibiscus). It wasn't too sweet, and had the right amount of tartness. Compared to Tex Mex and Mexican restaurants in town, they provide a meager amount of chips, but they are freshly made with some homemade salsa. I didn't really have to worry about snacking on the chips because my food came out fairly quickly. I ordered some Mole Enchiladas and received some large portions. The chicken enchiladas were a little juicy, and the mole really enhanced the flavor. I loved the smokiness of the ancho falling through + the chocolate flavor. The cotija cheese and crema drizzled on top of the mole was good too. It had a tinge of sweetness, and paired well with the Jamaica. I recommend you try this place out!
