The reason I'm upset is because they started putting fillers (beans & rice) in their carneasada burrito. So I've driven past this place a million times and at first glance It kind of looks like it's closed down. I love Mexican food and I really love street tacos! Something told me to just go and give It a try and man am I glad that I did. This is a really simple place that looks just like a carry-out and It has a drive thru with plenty parking. They offer a very full menu with a variety of hand held Mexican meals and various Hispanic sodas and drinks. I ordered three street tacos: pollo asada, chorizo and carne adobada. Each taco is topped with homemade guacamole and pico de gallo. They offer a wide range of homemade salsas and likes that you can take to go. They prepared my food pretty quick so this is a great lunch option. I definitely see myself returning and making this my go to taco spot. I can't wait to try their other tasty menu items. read more

Let me start by saying, I'm more of a reader of reviews than one to write them. That being said... As a native Southern Californian, this place is legit! I've drove by for years (usually late at night) and always said I got to give the place a try. My only regret is I waited so long to do so. Lengua taco just melted in my mouth and the green chili burrito is super on point! It also brought a simile to my face when I saw the pickeled carrots, jalapenos, onion, and radishes on the salsa bar (always a great indicator of a great Mexican place.) I did think $9 and some change was a little expensive for one burrito and one taco.....until I ate them! Worth every penny! I'll update this as I work my way through the menu \m/ Well, it's been 6 days and I'm back. Once again, I had the lengua tacos( 2 this time) and I will say my only complaint is the tortillas are super thin and you only get one bite before everything spills out. Doubling up on the tortillas would completely solve this issue. I also went with the barbacoa burrito and it was outstanding! I have given this place 3 tries . 2 out of 3 were bad. Very bad. The asada burrito tasted like the ingredients came out of the garbage. No seasoning to the meat, bland beans and rice. There was nothing cohesive to bring the flavors together. I felt nauseous after just the first two bites. One other occasion I thought I'd get something else maybe thinking it was fluke. I got a grilled fish taco. The fish tasted like it was 2 days old and was severely overcooked. The only good eating experience I had here was the very first time I went. I think I was just hungry that day or something but my last 2 visits proved that was just a fluke. If you want some real authentic burritos and tacos, go elsewhere. There's not a place in Raleigh that will make you a bigger, meatier burrito. It's absolutely delicious! The meat is flavorful, fresh, and tender. The salsa packs a punch. There's a good variety of combinations. Let me be clear though; this is REAL Mexican food. This isn't Tex-Mex (ala Chipotle). You're not going to have an ornate-looking burrito bowl, it also certainly isn't Moe's (1 tbsp of meat, 2lbs of lettuce). It's Los Cuates, and it's the best quick Mexican joint in Raleigh. read more

That's why I love Los Cuates...so far, anyway. I've only been twice but both experiences were delicious. Go for their big honkin' burritos and you can't go wrong. The serving sizes are correct, which is to say, gargantuan, and the prices are good, which is to say, no it's not as cheap as Taco Bell, but then again, you're eating real food! Oh, don't go here on a dinner date unless you want to take it somewhere else. This one is a drive-thru. I've been to the Capital Blvd. location where the service was very friendly and the Wake Forest Rd. location but that was about 4 years back and I don't remember much other than doing the happy dance while I was macking on my burrito. Huge win, so cal native here. Grew up on mexican food from whittier and costa mesa. This place hits the nail. I got the Carnitas burrito and the whole thing was basically solid meat! meat had tons of flavor and was very tender and very little grease. Also had a lengua and carne asada taco....both perfect. My only regret is not dropping in sooner! Anyone from the aforementioned region probably has some type of standard on what a true fast food Mexican joint is. This is a dude's place for a burrito. They also have tacos, enchiladas, and a few platos for combinations and bigger meals. And by "dude", I mean that their burritos come with plenty of meat, sauce, and guacamole without the beans, rice, iceberg lettuce filler. So, these burritos are muy macho. There is a salsa bar inside with several types of nice salsa, radishes (for menudo), and pickled peppers/carrots. And my benchmark for a "real deal" place is if beef tongue is a permanent fixture on the main menu. It is. And you can get jarritos and aqua frescas too. So, bonus points there. But there's no tortilla chips. And I like the fillers to kind of lighten up the meat torpedo that these guys serve. The taste is okay, not great, but definitely slightly better than average. There are three fold out chairs here to wait on if you go inside, but the key advantage is the drive in window. But you won't want to go inside. It has the charm of a bail bond shop and is currently staffed with guys who aren't so on-the-spot with the sponge and mop. You can see into the back kitchen and it is a mess. Signs are falling down. Laminate is peeling. I am a slob and even I think this place is dirty. Here was the kicker. It was 12:30pm on a workday and despite having authentic flavor, cheap prices, great location, and me eating my entire meal in my car -- not a single other person came buy during the 30 minutes I was there. This place reeked of a place that -- if it was good food -- would have work trucks coming by. As I drove away, I just had to go 200 feet down the street to see "Tacos y Mariscos" parking lot full of Ford F150 pickups. Never been there, but it confirmed my thoughts. This place looked nasty and the food tasted the same way, cold rice as if from the microwave, beans out the can and a pinch of cheese added into the two chicken taco. I was very excited to show my cousin this new place that I had discovered and we were highly disappointed. First of all, I ordered a Medium coke and paid for it and did NOT receive it, I didn't realize until I got home. I am not a picky eater at all, I love food and enjoy how different people make different styles of food but the tacos I ordered (tacos de asada) were so so smelly. As soon as I opened my box, my cousin and I looked at each other and we knew the experience was going to be bad. First of all, the meat looked boiled and not "asada", the whiff was so strong it smelled like the meat had gone bad before they cooked it and the bad smell just simmered and got stronger. I could only get through HALF of ONE taco and they were small. The torta's chorizo was way too salty and greasy going down your throat. The churro cheesecake was very dry but flavor was good though. We also ordered 1 birria taco (not pictured) and the flavor was alright. As I'm typing this I have a stomach ache. I will definitely not be going back here. I don't enjoy leaving bad reviews but when I pay good money for food that isn't even "kind of good", I feel like I have to leave an honest review. read more

Great prices for the quality of food. I ordered a fish taco and a shredded beef burrito. This burrito was packed with meat and veggies, it was truly filling. When the car sales guy suggested we go for a test drive down Capital, I eyed my ravenous companion and helpfully suggested we turn the outing into a burrito run. It looks a little 'rougher' than the other, (health score of 91 when we were just there), but honestly, that wouldn't stop me. The burritos are freakin' amazing, and cheap ($4).
