No offense to Wauseon, but I can't think of many reasons I would travel to a desolate town In midwestern Ohio that questionably doesn't even exist on a map, unless secretly offered the promise of political asylum. But I think I just found one. Los Mariachis Restaurant located in Wauseon gives restaurant-goers all that a Mexican restaurant can offer with only the exception of hot, south-of-the-border weather. I'm not certain how someone decided it was a good idea to open an authentic Mexican restaurant in the middle of an almost entirely white, rural community of farmers, but I'm not sure it matters. Los Mariachis is the place where northwestern Ohioans seek refuge from the deluge of the boring, tepid flavor of life found in rural America. Los Mariachis delivers a gorgeous smorgasbord of ethnic dishes which, as is found in most of middle America, are either so culturally-confusing or simply too challenging to pronounce, that the menu items have to be lined with corresponding numbers to allow locals to utter "I'll take the Number 27" or simply point on the menu hoping for some degree of inter-cultural understanding. But I say none of this in jest. Much like their counterparts in bigger cities like Toledo or Detroit, Los Mariachis employ an incredibly professional waitstaff who champion qualities often found in employees who actually immigrate from Mexico: eagerly respectful, wantingly helpful, ridiculously quick, and all without any of the brash entitlement found in the waitstaff typified in their snobby suburban high school counterparts. How else can I tell you how much I love this restaurant? This was my second 45-minute trip to Wauseon and BOTH trips were solely to visit Los Mariachis (the first was on a recommendation of a client of mine). I found a delightful place that delivered BOTH Mayan wall art AND bottomless warm tortilla chips & bottles of salsa, it was like the perfect attempt to satiate both the "first date" couple looking for a restaurant with an honest ethnic feel but also promises the silly but expected amenities found in American chains like Applebee's. My wife ordered the Molcajete, a dish of Shrimp, steak, and chicken with tomatoes, onions, green peppers, avocado, and melted cheese, all piping hot and served in a hand-carved Incan style bowl that sat a half-foot off of the table. I ordered La Piña, a similar dish that was presented in a half-sliced pineapple bowl. I cannot write enough to exclaim how much both dishes were outstanding. My children's choices were much more typical fare that you would find in any Mexican style restaurant with varying arrangements of enchiladas, flautas, or deep fried chimis. And of all thrills that my eleven year old could boast of, he finally found his holy grail of eating establishments- one which would promise endless refills on chocolate milk. And found in Wauseon, Ohio, no less! The entire experience made me do something I usually never do: order dessert. (That's how my children can tell I'm in a good mood.). A sopapilla, a couple slices of xango (deep fried cheesecake) and some fried ice cream later, all four of us seriously couldn't move from our wooden bench seat canopy booth, but the the extremely nice wait staff appeared willing to roll us to our cars. Okay, they didn't offer, but I bet you they would have done it, if I had asked. You might not have another reason to go to Wauseon, but I assure you this place is reason enough alone. read more

This was my second visit here as it was time for my yearly trip to the Toledo area. The store was still a cool environment and was clean. The service was kind of meh but not terrible. Let's delve into the food... Chimichanga What Is It: This was a classic take on the chimi. It was a flour tortilla stuffed with spicy chicken (you had the option of that or beef) and topped with cheese sauce, sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole, and lettuce which I left off. The plate also includes refried beans and rice. Presentation: The plate looked picturesque enough but they overlapped a lot of the ingredients like putting the rice on top of the refried beans which is a bit unfortunate. Split the difference and go with... 5 out of 10 Taste/Final Analysis: This was a very nice take on the Chimichanga. The spicy chicken was very well seasoned and the cheese sauce was very good. The guacamole was slightly above average and the pico de gallo was fine. The rice and beans were average (well I take my wife's word for it on the beans as refried beans are not my thing at all.) All in all a darn good lunch dish for not a ton of money as this dish was only $7.25. My dad wanted to go to Los Mariachis for an early Father's Day dinner and I am so glad that he did! We all (all 6 of us) enjoyed our food and service so much! The restaurant is extremely spacious. We were seated in the back where the bar is. Our server was Luis and he was absolutely phenomenal! He went above and beyond when it came to serving and accommodating us. Once we were seated, he sat down two bowls of fresh, hot tortilla chips with two jars of fresh salsa. While he took our drink orders, we asked him for an order of queso and guacamole as well! Both sides were great! The queso was thick and creamy and the guacamole was thick and chunky. When our chips began to run low, he brought out two more bowls of chips without us asking. I ordered the camarones charros and will definitely order it again! I mixed my entire plate together (shrimp, jalapeños, rice, beans, and queso) and topped it with some Tapatio. It may sound gross to some, but it was absolutely amazing! The portion size was huge too! I had another days worth of leftovers to take home. We will definitely be back the next time I'm in town! This place is a disgrace to the food establishment. I ordered the barrito deluxe. It came out with the rest of my families and friends food. They wanted me to keep my food and they wanted me to eat my mold that was on my tomato's. The manager the proceeds to tell me that it was not mold and that it was the leavy part of my tomato. I wish I would have taken a picture because it was a center cut of the tomato that had mold on the inside I had to break it open to show my family. I am completely and utterly disgusted with this place I will not be returning and will be letting my family and friends know so they do not have to come back to this horrible place. Nachos covered in grey meat and white velveta. Lisy says "This is the kind of Mexican food we made at summer camp." The menu says "Mexican food is best when its prepared fresh." The food arrived about three minutes after we ordered. The "burrito" (yes, I'm using quotes) is grey meat, no seasoning, wrapped in a tortilla and covered with a mysterious brown sauce. The food that I received was identical, except covered in red sauce. The salsa was from a jar. The waiter was surly and seemed very annoyed with us, I have no idea why. Either this place has gone downhill, or previous reviewers aren't the best judges of Mexican food. The only positive was that none of us got food poisoning. read more

Okay, I admit that when I went I was a little hung over. And I admit that I love Mexican food and there's no shortage of that in Phoenix. And I admit that I love Hispanics and there's no shortage of hot ones here in Phoenix. So, all these factors played in on my experience at Los Mariachis. I went there with my mom, and she has been there several times before. I ordered the chicken quesadillas with a side of beans and rice. Very good!! I ordered 4 deluxe burritos to go and the lettuce on the side since I was gonna heat it later . They did that and lots of people had told me best food ever there . They were wrong . The ground beef was cooked to death and super dry and no seasoning at all . There was no salsa on it . The refried bean that came with it were ran through a food processor ; they were more or less the texture of gravy . The fried rice ; never had rice that dry . never had rice that dry ever . I would never recomand it to anyone . Taco Bell would be better and I refuse to eat there . read more

We stopped here on a long roadtrip for dinner. What a gem in the midst of fast food and "neighborhood" chain restaurants! Per the recommendations of other Yelpers, we had the double order of beef fajitas. Wow was that a lot of food! Huge skillet of beef, onions, peppers and tomatoes, served with two big plates of rice, beans, guac, etc. Attentive service. Chips were decent, salsa was better than expected. Horchata was sweet and tasty. My only complaint was that the fajitas were a bit salty without the condiments (with, they were great). read more

Coming from the UK, I'm no expert when it comes to mexican food, but I went here with students from Columbia and Bolivia and an American friend and we all loved this restaurant! I had la piña, a fresh pineapple full of shrimp, chicken, beef and vegetables and I can easily say that it was the best Mexican food I have ever had. My friend had the chilli rellanos and said it was average, and the students had number 61 ( we can't remember the name!?) and really enjoyed it. They said the best Mexican that they've had in the USA. Chips and salsa were great too! The service was excellent, very friendly. If you speak Spanish they'll love it. Came in for lunch because of the positive reviews I saw & there were a good amount of cars in the parking lot. Chips were warm, cris and plentiful. Also gave me plenty of Salsa and both were tasty. I ordered the 3 Enchilada lunch special $8 and pop was $2. I chose 2 chicken and 1 beef. Both were really good and we're served on authentic corn tortillas. Came with a little guacamole, sour cream, rice and beans. All good. Food was hot, salsa was the right temp. They weren't very busy, but the service was excellent. My husband and I both had the special dinner. It was bland but ediable. We have never had chili rellno stuffed with mashed potato before. The tamale had gravy over it and tasted like it came in frozen. The regular tacos tasted like there wasn't any seasoning in it just ground beef and onion. On the plus side, my son had the steak tacos and they were very good and my husband had the shrimp cocktail and it was good also. Not someplace I will be going to again. Authentic Mexican food. I've never had a bad meal here but stay away from the "American" choices, definitely not their specialty. Service is always fast, food is always hot, drinks are excellent and always reasonably priced. Their a la carte choices such as tacos and tamales are outstanding! We were returning to Toledo from Bryan at dinner time and stopped in Wauseon. Our choices were limited to fast food restaurants and El Mariachi. We were pleasantly surprised with this small Mexican restaurant. Service was gracious and quick. We ordered cheese dip for an app, which was watery but still tasty. I ordered the chicken Enchiladas dinner. The enchiladas were served with a brown gravy on top, and it was surprisingly delicious. We had margaritas on the rocks and they were pretty darn good too! Give this place a try next time you are in Wauseon - I think you will enjoy it. read more

Stopped here for some post brewery dinner. Was it the best "mexican" food that I have ever had? No of course not. But it was pretty darn good. The service was terrific, fast and friendly. The drink sizes were good and priced right. The food portions were good, not the humungous sizes that some places give now. I don't need 10 pounds of food! The taste was pretty good. We were passing through on the interstate and needed a late lunch break. Saw all the 4 star reviews and thought this would be a great find. It is true the staff was very friendly and the service is fast. The food, however, was another story, and ultimately not worth stopping for. We had two lunch specials that included tacos, beans, quesadillas, and an enchilada. All ingredients tasted bland and out of a can or made with a mix. This did not seem like authentic fresh Mexican food. We would've been better off stopping at subway for a sandwich. Maybe we were there on an off day with a bad cook? read more

My dad lived in Wauseon for just a few years, but he found Los Mariachis right away and we never looked back. Its the single best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. The service is great, the atmosphere is very colorful and laid back. My personal favorite: Shrimp Chimichangas. Best food I've ever had. The food here is really solid, and the service is always the best! My husband and I don't mind driving 25 minutes to eat at Los Mariachis, even when we have 2 other Mexican restaurants within 5 minutes of where we live (Swanton). I LOVE their hot sauce, which is made in-house, with fire roasted peppers! You can really taste and see the dark roasted peppers in the sauce...not just hot, but really flavorful! Their Margarita's are really good, with an emphasis on lime, rather than the awful sour mix messes that pass for a Margarita in Northwest Ohio. The chips are warm & fresh, the food is authentic, delicious, and NOT swimming in Velveeta cheese the way that the food is at the "other" two establishments near by in Swanton. Let's face it, you aren't going to come to Los Mariachis for the fancy building and decor (or lack thereof). However, if you are in the mood for some great authentic Mexican food, this place is perfect. Friendly staff, very good food, and reasonable prices are good enough reasons to come here.
