We decided to give this place a try. We live in Castro Valley and want to support local buissneses. My wife ordered a 2 item plate with a chicken soft taco and chile relleno and I the Molcajetes Tradicional. My wifes chicken taco had plenty of chicken and she said it was ok. The chile relleno was thickly battered and a bit bland. My Molcajetes had beef, chicken, chorizo and shrimp. The only thing edible was the shrimp. The chorizo was hard and dry. The beef was literally like chewing on leather. Over cooked and dry as sawdust, I had quite a time just cutting it into bite sized pieces. Unedible! The chicken was not much better. The server asked if everything was ok. I calmly told him no and what the issue was. I said I will pay for it but you can throw it away. He offered something that I couldn't understand what he said and I said to get rid of it, I don't want it. Didn't offer to reduce or remove the cost. I usually roll with it when things aren't great but this needed to be addressed. As expensive as things are restaurants can't rest on their laurels. You had better be on your "A" game or you will be out of buisness. I literally do not want mexican food in my future for some time based on our experience at this restaurant. -5 stars. read more

Omg. Don't let the inside fool you. It dosent have all the bells and whistles but this place is sooooo good. 1 mocajete bowl is enough for 2 people trust me. The flavors are jam packed. I love this place and I definitely would come here all the time! And the staff is always friendly and come in a decent amount of time. read more

My sister Kathy and I found this place while searching for Mexican Albondigas soup. We go to Mexico a lot and get it there, but it's hard to find here in the Bay Area. We each ordered a Cadillac margarita of course, and then the large bowl of Albondigas soup. They brought us chips and salsa, along with chopped onion, jalapeño, cilantro, and limes for the soup. It is the best soup I've ever had outside of Mexico. And I am very picky. Service was excellent by both Roxy and Juan, I would highly recommend this restaurant and it's our new place even though I live in Pleasanton, it's not that far. On short notice they were able to accommodate our party of 9 for lunch around 1:30 on a Monday (President's Day). Chose this place because it was recommended by a friend. Everyone enjoyed their food, it was flavorful and the portions are huge. I don't eat pork, so was a little disappointed that I couldn't have the refried beans, but ordered whole beans instead which were served with some cheese and had good flavor. It's a nice, family-run business. Being that we had a big party, the food was coming out as it was being made, so some people had to wait for their food, while other's were hesitating to start eating - I insisted they go ahead and start, because no one likes to eat cold food! The Birria was really good and tender. For our party, we spent around $230 for lunch, which isn't toooo bad for lunch. read more

Hi, move to Castro Valley years ago. I've been saying there is not a good Mexican restaurant in the area and it's a shame because I love Mexican food.. I am so glad I decided to try this cute little place that I just haven't gone to considering I've had not good luck other with Mexican cuisine other than take out in this area. What an adorable, cozy vibes this place provides. Everyone that works here is warm, friendly, and attentive. The food is top notch. Excellent. Delicious and aesthetically beautiful. I came here a couple weeks ago and then wanting to make a review. I just haven't had the time. Here are a few photos of our food. First off, I want to say this restaurant has improved a lot in the last year or so. The quesaburria taco dinner comes with 2 big tacos and rice and beans for 20 bucks, and it is really good. However, the other day I got the 3 tacos, one chicken, one steak, and one al pastor. They were really bad with ZERO FLAVOR, and I had not eaten anything all day, so that says a lot when you are starving and totally did not enjoy your food. 1. they need to season their taco meat and USE SALT to bring out those flavors. 2. Al Pastor has its own unique flavors and they were completely absent from my taco. They were really terrible. I went there because I sit at the bar and sometimes have a drink and talk to the guys there because I know one of the them from a different location. There used to be a really nice girl bartender there too that I would chat it up with while I ate and drank. The staff here is REALLY nice. read more

We were starving and needed a yummy place not far off the freeway. The service was great and fast. Plenty of seating (we had a party of 7). The chips and salsa were fresh and constantly refilled. I tried a Mai tai and it was very good. The portions...HUGE! My kids eat a lot and we left with some doggy bags. I got the fajita combo (steak/chicken/shrimp). It had plenty of shrimp. Served with rice, beans, tortillas, sour cream and a ton of guacamole. We also tried the carne asada plate. The meat was tender, juicy and seasoned well. It was topped with the BEST grilled onions I've ever had. Quesabirria taco was also yummy. The consumme was authentic and good. Base in my experience the sea food needs improvement. My husband and I order shrimp. One a la ranchera and the other al mojo de ajo. When the plates came they looked awesome the taste was not. The shrimp were not cleaned completely and you can see the shrimp poop. You can also tell the shrimp was precooked which is something I would have like to know before ordering. The service was very good. The waiter very helpful and understanding. The ambience was like a neighborhood spot with people coming and going. Would I comeback here no. Friendly, delicious and the albondigas soup will make you want to call your family and express your undying Love! I've been coming to this place for years and I've always enjoyed anything I've ordered here. Enchiladas verde, combination meals, lunch specials, but my absolute favorite is the Albondigas soup! The flavors, the veggies, definitely the meatballs. They serve this with rice, avocado, cilantro and chopped onions on the side and you can adjust your flavors. The people are friendly the service is fantastic. Only drawback is I have noticed them microwave things occasionally. The soup is one of those so whenever I order I just asked for no microwave and they're happy to use only the stove. My kids love it, anyone I've ever brought here has always enjoyed their meal. We've been dining here for several years. We have dined in and and gotten takeout many times. The restaurant is a "hole in the wall" in the best possible way. It's small, quaint, and has comfortable booths for sitting. They also have a small bar that seats around 3-4 people. Food: if you're looking for superb, hot Mexican Food, look no further. My go to are the cheese enchilada and crispy chicken taco combination. I usually can only eat part of it because the portions are large. Also notable are their chips & salsa and their top shelf Cadillac margaritas. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Castro Valley!! Just alright. Came here for my brother's birthday in a group of five. The waitress was nice enough, but it was obvious she was prioritizing the tables with Spanish speakers and was disappointed that, despite us being Mexican, we don't speak Spanish. She was especially chatty with everyone else, even hung around the other tables to socialize, but was very transactional with us. I pick up on that kind of thing because it's something I've experienced my whole life and it was enough to make me not want to come here again. The food didn't do much to help. Nothing was terrible, but very middling. I ordered three street tacos ($3.25 each) -- chicken, chile verde, and carne asada -- and she got one of the meats wrong, but I don't like wasting food by sending it back to the kitchen so I just ate it. She gave me carnitas instead of the carne asada. The chicken was dry and was the worst of the three. The chile verde was solid and I'd order that again, but the carnitas were only alright. They also didn't give us any salsas and there were no salsas on the table, which was really weird and especially given the picture on the menu shows a little cup of salsa included with the dish. My brother was at least really happy with his caldo de pollo ($12.50 small, $14.50 large), which is primarily why he comes here. But everything else was forgettable. There are better Mexican restaurants around. You wouldn't do terribly by coming here but it's worth making a trip elsewhere instead. read more

Customer service is top notch. Food was authentic & seemed home-made,especially the refried beans & fluffy rice. There were 3 dishes: burrito plate, chicken enchilada & taco or Taquitos & complimentary chips with house made salsa. The burrito plate which came with 2 burritos, refried beans & rice. The meat was tender, seasoned well & plentiful. From the tantalizing pictures of the chicken enchilada from fellow Yelpers, I decided to order this dish. The shredded chicken was semi moist so having the sauce really helped. This dish was lightly salted so it didn't leave me parched after I ate it. I was impressed with the refried beans which were so creamy & fresh. The rice was cooked to a light & fluffy consistency & not mushy. As far as the taco/taquitos go, the meat was well marinated & simmered & it was nice to have pickled carrots to go with the dish. Not only was the food great, but there's peace of mind knowing so many people visit this restaurant & that the health & safety of its customers is a priority. When you see the Alameda County of Environmental Health give you a PASSING score, you are reassured they take the extra measure to ensure that the foods are stored safely & that it's a clean establishment. Los Molcajetes is an olde style eatery with a large pricey menu, limited dining space & parking lot. inside and outside dining available. offerings: breakfast, combos, lunch specials, maricos, drinks. eats: 3 item combo (16.95) lots of food, especially, beans, refried rice. almost everything on plate piping hot, even the plate. -beans and rice were aplenty, tasted ok, nothing outstanding. -steak taco was chewy/bland, very crunchy shell that fell apart -chili relleno was huge, had a wrap around pepper tasting like egg .... -pork enchilada that was tasty but nothing outstanding. comped fried chips tasted fresh with spicy salsa. cocktail de ceviche (18) take out -didn't eat in eatery since combo was bigger than expected. -had unknown fish pieces, few shrimp bits, avocado chucks, tomato bits. cucumber, liquid, large portion, about 12-16 ounces. -didn't taste like the usual ceviche that has octopus, fish, shrimp... food didn't have any outstanding attributes. it was aplenty and mostly bland, unknown how authentic it is. the sauces weren't except for the salsa for the chips. read more
