A very sweet and local place. A highlight is the refried beans and the rice we should've just had that. They were cooked to perfection. The waitress was the only one in a room that was pretty packed, and we felt bad for her. The tacos and the eggs were OK but kind of bland but the sauce is they give you when you first sit down made them much better. One of our favorite things to always order in Mexican restaurants is guacamole, and that was kind of brown when served and lacked flavor and they gave you just a few chips for a larger size portion. The ambience is very nice and the music is festive because when it is off the air-conditioning/heating unit is quite loud. There are authentic things for sale, and that is quite charming. If you enjoy AUTHENTIC Mexican food, this cozy hole in the wall. location is well worth your visit. They immediately come out with a large basket of tortilla chips and three sauces - tomatillo/Verde, a very interesting cabbage-based version as well as a smoky/spicy chipotle one. I chose to have a pollo milenesa torta that was built with extremely fresh ingredients. The chicken was pounded, thin and fresh fried on the spot. Exceptional food, at a great price, and served with warmth. It's a little hole-in-the-wall, over the bridge from the "cool" part of newport - but oh-so-worth the 3 minute walk. The food is *stellar* across pretty much everything. - the tacos (oh, that chorizo taco!) are great, and they even have the good stuff like tripa, lengua, etc. - the salsas are even better, in particular, a cabbage-salsa (don't laugh. try it) that is to die for - the molcajetes (soup in a molcajete) is the star of the show, which is tough given all the other starts - and yes, everything else is just about as excellent So yeah, go, check this place out if you're in the 'hood. Came here with my family. Honestly my favorite Mexican restaurant in lower Fairfield county. Ambiance is cozy, family oriented. The food is DELICIOUS! Worst atmosphere ever, WHAT HAPPENED?? I came here a few weeks ago, the vibe was fantastic. Mexican music, a lady singing, proper Mexicans style !! I thought this is it I have found the best Mexican restaurant here. AND THEN, i went last night, as i walked in and asked for a table I wasn't greeted properly and felt uncomfortable right away. Anyway I sat down and it was like i was in a completely different place no music no vibe 1 waitress ! I absolutely loved eating here. The service is great; the ambient is cozy and tranquil; you can smell the deliciousness from the kitchen, and the food is amazing. My boyfriend wanted to come here for his birthday. It is right by his house in east norwalk. We pass by it all the time, but this was our first time going in. Cute little place with very few tables. The restaurant feels very family owned and welcoming which is nice. The food was ok, not the best tacos i've ever had or anything like that. We also had a frozen margarita and a sangria which were both huge and well worth the price. All in all I think the prices are good here, not too expensive. This place is great. It's the kind of place you should just let them order for you. Really nice staff, big portions, fresh & authentic, complimentary chips and 3 (delicious) salsas, etc. The menu has a wide variety of options and you'll have a full view of the kitchen which I always enjoy. I ordered (they recommended) the steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas. They come served with sauteed peppers, onion, a couple mushrooms, and some mozzarella cheese. The sauce is somewhere between a mole and teriyaki - really good. Because they give you huge portions of salsa with the chips, you'll always have leftover for your entree. I would definitely recommend this plate - muy autentica! It's not a fancy place, it seems like a lot of their business comes from take out and delivery, but I enjoyed eating there and looking into the kitchen. I wanted to update my review with three new revelations: 1. I have now used Los Molcajetes' delivery service twice, and it is simply amazing. I was worried the food would not travel well, but it got to my door both times in great shape -- hot, fresh, and awesome as always. 2. My new favorite drink (and apparently the favorite of the Sunday regulars we see here all the time) is the michelada. Think bloody mary mixed with beer. Simply amazing, great hangover cure and really hits the spot! 3. I tried the tongue tacos the other day. Very glad I did! Seriously, if you haven't been to this restaurant yet, I hope it's because you absolutely hate Mexican food. Otherwise, you are only hurting yourself. Oh, and to A W's review below -- wow, just wow. The food here certainly was not *bad*, however, it wasn't really very good either. Another odd veggie burrito situation. I ordered vegetable burritos sans cheese or dairy. The burrito arrived looking good, but with sour cream on it. OK... I don't always have to be the a-hole vegan. After scraping off all the sour cream, I pick up the burrito ready to bite in. I do, and while there are no meaty surprises (thank god), it is just rice and tomatoes. Where are the vegetables for the "vegetable burrito"? I mean, seriously? Rice and tomatoes. No broccoli? peppers? mushrooms? Squash? Corn? Come on, man. While the rice and tomato burrito didn't taste bad, it was just kind of lame. It isn't often that you get to taste Mexico without leaving Connecticut. For a moment I felt like I was in Mexico sipping a Dos Equis. Their salsa and chips brought to the table to start were fantastic with two flavors. I should have know the entrees would be incredible from that first bite of green salsa. Having lived in Los Angeles for four years and having envied the food of the American southwest since I was 7 years old, I have eaten many burritos and enchiladas over the years always looking for another spectacular meal. Los Molcajetes reminded me why I love Mexican cuisine and was fresh, spicy, and flavorful without pretension. The chicken burrito was one of the best I've ever had and my wife's enchiladas were fantastic. Thank you for becoming my new favorite Mexican restaurant and for the friendly service and spicy habanero sauce. 3.5 stars, I went for the higher approximation. I had high expectations for this place based on the other reviews. I pass by Molcajetes almost everyday on the way to work, so I have been meaning to try it for about a year now. I came here on my lunch break and got two shrimp tacos and a side of rice and beans. Everything was freshly made and it was excellent portion sizes. The two salsas they gave were were awesome! However, I felt like the shrimp could have had more flavor to them (it seemed like they didn't put any spice on them), and the beans were on the bland side. I really wanted to love this place. I am thinking I will have to go back and try some other things on the menu to make a decision. Everything on the menu looked pretty authentic, and I could see them cooking in the back with all fresh ingredients. BTW, AW-- that "mush" you are referring to is called refried beans, an authentic Mexican rendition of beans. How dare you refer to Sierra Grill as an "authentic" Mexican place, at least in comparison to this place. read more

I love their guacamole, one of the bests I've had; and I love how you get Nachos and different types of salsa on the table right away. Heads up if you order something with chorizo in it, very spicy! This place is the real deal. Authentic, delicious food in a no-nonsense environment. I guess that's one way of saying "hole in the wall" but that's what I was craving after eating at tons of overpriced and underwhelming Connecticut eateries. Solid Mexican food. I would say it's the best Mexican in South Norwalk considering the alternatives (sorry Acapulco, but you're horrible). We haven't eaten in the restaurant get but we did get delivery (yes you read that correctly!). Took about an hour to get to us though unfortunately. The guacamole was good as was the ceviche de camarón, but the burritos were nothing to write home about, even with the carne al pastor. I've driven by this place for years and finally decided to stop for lunch. It's In a run down strip mall in Sono so it's easy to just keep on going. However, it's worth a stop. Good authentic Mexican food. Inside is old style Mexican decor with maybe 10 tables. Tacos are simple Mexican style, meat, onion, and cilantro. With some meat options normally not found outside of Mexico; like tongue and liver. I had three tacos: shrimp, chorizo, and spicy pastor/pork. All delicious. Loved the spicy pork, which was spiced up enough to make you sweat. Great! The standard basket of chips comes with a salsa which was ok and 3 other tasty not so standard sauces for use with your meal. 3 tacos and a beer will cost you just $11 bucks. Not bad. read more
