Beef Empanadas (Pasteles de Carne)
Monica B.

Tasty food, slow service but opportunity to improve! Good to see they're busy. I ordered a pickup order on Uber Eats, one order of beef empanadas and one of chicken - each order was for 3 pieces. The pickup estimate time was 15-25 minutes on the app. I waited about 30 minutes and even though it didn't say my order was ready, I then went inside to ask about it. Before that, I tried calling but no one picked up. Once I showed my order in person they finished preparing it right there and then. The menu looks good and people seem to come here, so I look forward to coming back and trying their other food! Empanadas came with the stuff that pupusas usually come with, which was great and we slathered that on our empanadas. Muy sabrosa, vamos a regresar!

Papusas

This place was pretty good. It was kind of a hole in the wall but the staff was friendly. They had no customers though and the food took a long time. I did like all the papusa options and the food was fresh. Someone not far from us had a whole fish on their plate, seemed good and im a vegetarian! The parking is horrible but that is not why there is one star less. It was just soul less.

El día de ayer pedí unas pupusas frijol y queso y uba parte de la pupusa sólo era tortilla.

Just when I thought I'd had every pupusa, I got to try the zucchini pupusa and am finally at peace! Attentive + quick service.

One of my credit cards (the ones with annual fees and perks) offered dining credit to some restaurants, this is one of them. I'm not saying this the credit card credit is the only reason I went, but it helps guide in the decision making. My wife, friend and I went together and had a good experience. We shared a few appetizers, shared each of their papusas and had some drinks. We had a reservation and the place seemed packed when we went, which was on a Thursday night with a good vibe. I particularly recommend the papusas, especially their Lengua (beef tongue) one which was super tender. Everything was good. For dessert, we were stuffed by tried their Quesadilla Con Horchata, which was a soft bread that you dipped in a cholatey Horchata. Nice refreshing way to end the evening. Great place, fancier Salvadorian food experience than I'm used to having but a great experience.

Finally got to try Popoca Friday night with a friend, long overdue and worth it…read more We shared plates, which the staff recommended, and it worked out perfectly. Ordered the tamal, guacamole, and two pupusas. I was worried it wouldn't be enough food, but the portions were generous, we couldn't even finish everything. The real highlight was sitting in the backyard where the chef was cooking the pupusas live right in front of us, grilling fish and steak, hand pressing the masa. Getting to watch that whole process made the meal even better. Everything we ordered was excellent. Already thinking about going back to try the enchiladas. If you go, get a pupusa or two so everyone at the table can try one.

I doubt that made much difference to their clientele, but in its place is another family-run business, this time Salvadoran. This one offers more generic plates at student-friendly prices for undiscriminating palates. That's at least my take in the couple of occasions I've tried it after going to the gym. The first time I tried it I couldn't see the menu until I got up to the order counter. Then I made the server wait since the menu was so comprehensive (Photo 5). I went basic and ordered the $16.99 Chicken Platter because the kabob version was five dollars more. It was decent enough though on the bland side with rice, fresh tomato salsa, and a small side salad of iceberg lettuce, sliced cucumber, and radish (Photo 9). The menu mentioned a house white sauce. I didn't see it, but I also didn't miss it either. I came back to try them again. I tried ordering the $14.99 Scrambled Eggs with Beef Chorizo but was told they were out of chorizo. This was looking to be a recurring theme because I was rebuffed the first time when I unsuccessfully ordered the beef gyro. Ironically this time they had the $16.99 Beef Gyro Platter. The rice and salad were identical to my previous platter, the beef was just OK (Photo 10). FOOD - 3 stars...middling meats, edible but not overly appetizing AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...spacious enough and nicely decorated SERVICE - 3 stars...minimal communication on the food and when it will be ready TOTAL - 3 stars...fitting for a student appetite, good enough for the rest of us if expectations are kept in check RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Service was super slow and I was one of 3 people there when they opened. Not sure what was going on. They also took forever to make my food. The birria was lacking flavor was was super chewy. Needed to be more tender.
