This is a very hole in the wall mom and pop shop that I drive by and if you blink, you'll miss it. There's street parking around but if you don't mind crossing the street, there's parking around Walgreens. It's a pretty small spot but well worth it. You can order from the window or you can sit, look at the menu and then wait. The food takes time to come out but that is because everything is made fresh and to order. I cannot begin to describe how worth it the wait was. We got horchata to sip on while we talked and were kept in good company until we got empanadas, yucas and finally, our pupusas. All I can say it, everything was delicious and made with love. I do wish they have more support but they seem to be doing well since they've been at the spot forever. All I can say is I was speechless once the food came out because I was just eating. read more

Los Olivios has my heart! I am so happy to have found a delicious authentic pupusa spot! I'm always on the hunt for a good pupusa and most places either don't have enough filling or have a bland salsa (and we all know how important salsa is!) Thankfully, this place is 10/10 on BOTH! They fill up their pupusas and they taste amazingggg. They also offer the option of spicy or non spicy salsa. I personally get the spicy and I love the kick / flavor, it pairs very well with the pupusa. I also order their platano frito with frijol + crema, the staff is super accommodating and nice when I ask for them to slice the banana thinner for a crispier bite. I highly recommend this location! Service is amazing and food is even better. read more

Our new go to pupusa spot! We found this place about 3 months ago and have been consistently eating here at least once a week! My husband and I get 2-3 pupusas each (revueltas + cheese) & their platano frito con frijol y crema I'm super picky about my pupusas and these are delicious! So full of flavor & I love how there's not "too much" masa, it's a perfect balance/ratio of filling to masa. For the platano frito, omg, the beans, crema, platano itself; SO DELICIOUS! We use to share a plate but now I have to have my own, it's just too good to share. I love how they offer the option of spicy or regular salsa as I don't care much for the regular. It's more of a plain tomato sauce taste and I really enjoy the flavor/kick of the spicy salsa they offer. 10/10 highly recommend, run don't walk! I plan on coming back this weekend so I'll update my review with photos soon! read more

I placed an order online on the menustar system as directed on this restaurant's website. It said the order would be ready in 15-30 mins. When I showed up to pick up the order, the cashier was very rude and said we do not order from this location. I showed him my phone with the confirmation code and receipt, he said the order would be ready in 30 mins. It took nearly one hour and a half to get our food. I will never come here again, I've ordered from the online system many times before and it has never been an issue. These people were blaming me for ordering through the online system, like y'all should take that off the website if it's an issue for you.. completely unacceptable. They lost a loyal customer! read more

Tasty food, slow service but opportunity to improve! Good to see they're busy. I ordered a pickup order on Uber Eats, one order of beef empanadas and one of chicken - each order was for 3 pieces. The pickup estimate time was 15-25 minutes on the app. I waited about 30 minutes and even though it didn't say my order was ready, I then went inside to ask about it. Before that, I tried calling but no one picked up. Once I showed my order in person they finished preparing it right there and then. The menu looks good and people seem to come here, so I look forward to coming back and trying their other food! Empanadas came with the stuff that pupusas usually come with, which was great and we slathered that on our empanadas. Muy sabrosa, vamos a regresar! read more

my favorite pupusas and empanadas in oakland! the staff is super nice and there is lots of seating. also lots of salvadorian snacks and desserts. i suggest you call ahead or order online though because it usually takes about 30 minutes before my food is ready but soooo worth it :) read more

This place was pretty good. It was kind of a hole in the wall but the staff was friendly. They had no customers though and the food took a long time. I did like all the papusa options and the food was fresh. Someone not far from us had a whole fish on their plate, seemed good and im a vegetarian! The parking is horrible but that is not why there is one star less. It was just soul less. read more

Delicious food! Although I brought everything to go it was very homey feeling inside. They have a window outside you can order from as well as a window inside with a dining area. They also have snacks and treats available for purchase :) I got the pupusas we're a good size and the fillings were so yummy! I got one chicken and one pork and they were delicious. I also got the beans and plantains which were so good! read more

Call ahead to order and then expect to wait. I've been going to this place for years now and that is just the way that it is. Great pupusas though. My favorite is the revuelta. I buy six additional and then freeze them so I can eat them later at home. read more

Good baby Jesus! This place is amazing! I was craving pupusas especially after experiencing this place by my home. All I can say is yuck! But los Olivos! Omg! Flavor is on point everything was good. Los Olivos is the one Salvadoreño restaurant that stands out in Oakland. The Pupusas are done with care, not oily and a large variety of filling options. I stick to tradition so order the Pupusas de Queso y Loroco and the Revuelta which is pork and beans. Add Curtido and salsa and off I go on a quick tour back to La Patria. Bien chivo loco! Get adventurous and try the fruit salad fresco, a fruit salad as a drink, si men! dale mecha!. I also recommend the Platanos, Frijoles y Crema plate the holly trinity of Salvadoreño cuisine. This plate can be shared among your table. They also make empanadas de Platano using Platano filled with beans or sweet cream and fried. Basta! That's as far as I have gotten with this place and love it. They need to resolve the personality disorder they have between paying at the window or at the table though. I cannot express how angry I am with this restaurant. We had 2 kids with us and they were bored out of their minds. We got here at 12:40pm on a Saturday and we didn't get our food until 1:50!!! WTF We noticed that other people that had got there after us got their food before us??? When I went up say something, one of the guys just looked at me at didn't say anything and walked away. When my Hispanic friend went up, they told him that people pre-order on the phone and that's why when they get here their food is ready. Bullshit or not - unacceptable. If that was really the case, then tell me when I get seated that you have a gazillion orders ahead and tell me that if I want to wait it will be 1 hour. They ignored us. They didn't provide an explanation. They didn't fry some damn plantains to get us started on appetizers first. It's not like we ordered complicated stuff. We literally ordered 5 pupusas and one order of fried plantains (which freaking came with beans and sour cream)...... I do not understand wth is going on back in the kitchen. Los Olivos didn't have any chicken for their pupusas. not hating them for that.. eatery still in fix-it stage. ambience kind of ran down/being fixed up. one person cooking, cashiering, and waiting on tables. eats: lorroco and cheese/zuchinni and cheese pupusas(2@) -really fulfilling, fresh ingredients. -zuchinnis doesn't come thru, probably melted. -curtido bland cuz i didn't want spicy. takeouts: -parking may be an issue. read more

So far, this is the best pupusa spot I've found in Oakland. I'm usually weary of places that serve both Mexican and Salvadoran food but this place is solid. I'd also recommend the pan con pavo if you're looking to venture beyond pupusas. It's basically a stuffed French roll with turkey or chicken. read more

When first getting there it seemed a little odd since the business is hidden and would think its just another apartment complex. When entering this place it is really nice on the inside and we just entered grabbed a menu and sat ourselves. The server soon came over got us waters and took our order. I got 3 pupusas. One of pork, cheese and beans (revuelta) and two of cheese and beans. My girlfriend got two pupusas of chicken, beans and cheese. Let me tell you when I finished mine I went over to try some of my girlfriends pupusas and they were pleasing to eat the flavor was really good!! I recommend eating here. read more

This used to be my favorite spot for pupusas but I ordered recently and the food quality is not the same. They use a lot of dough and not enough filling such as cheese or meat or whatever you order. I would not recommend because there are better places for pupusas. read more

Delicious authentic El Salvadoran food! I had the Pan de Pollo and it was too big for me, I had to eat it with a fork like the gringa I am, but the chicken was perfect. What a great price for a great service. Once we got there our server greeted us with a smile and brought us the menu right away. He treated us kindly throughout our whole experience. The food took about 15 minutes to get there, but we we're ok with it since we all ordered different plates. When our food came, let me tell you the taste was very authentic of what Salvadorian food tastes like. Not only their pupusas are great but their soups, and grilled gen. If you want a good experience for a great price, Los Olivos is your place to go. Not like overpriced Salvadorian restaurants I have tried in Berkeley. It is also a kid-friendly restaurant - a plus for me. read more

So I tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt, saying that the food was worth the wait. However now after several visits, at least 20, a lot of money spent, today's food & service.. It is not worth it! First, the service has always been bad since day one: super slow, forgot part of your order and at times they are rude. Which I was willing to ignore as the food was good and authentic. This is no longer the case as the quality and flavor of food has taken a turn for the worse, the service takes even longer and they are still rude. At 3pm on Monday, I should not have to wait 45 minutes for pupusas. Not to mention, they were made with more masa than cheese and pork. Honestly they were really gross. Bad pupusas/food + bad service + extremely long wait time = no more business from me. read more

The restaurant is stylishly designed with high ceilings and three distinct dining spaces. As you enter, the bar and a dining room are on the right--I especially loved the two window tables overlooking Washington Street. Another indoor dining room is on the left, and there is also a pleasant patio. On a Saturday evening, the restaurant was completely full. Service was prompt and friendly, though the kitchen was somewhat slow. We weren't in a hurry, so it wasn't a major issue. We ordered one appetizer, two pupusas, and one main course, which was plenty for two people. YUCA CON ANCHOA This dish features fried yuca topped with marinated anchovy, pepescas, tarragon cream cheese, and macerated onions. I love both anchovies and yuca fries, so this sounded like a delicacy. Unfortunately, all I could taste was salt, which overwhelmed the other flavors. PUPUSA DE LOROCO A traditional Salvadoran masa dough filled with melted cheese and chopped loroco buds--an edible flower bud often described as tasting somewhere between squash and asparagus. PUPUSA DE BACALAO Y AJO VERDE Filled with salt cod, green garlic, potato, and cheese, this pupusa had a mild and delicate flavor. Eating the pupusas plain allowed me to appreciate the mildly sweet, earthy corn flavor of the masa, with its pillowy-soft interior and lightly toasted, crispy exterior. The fillings--whether loroco or salt cod--were intentionally subtle and paired beautifully with the gooey cheese. The balance of flavors and textures was outstanding. I've eaten quite a few pupusas over the years, and these were the best I've had. They were served with curtido, the traditional crunchy, tangy, lightly fermented cabbage slaw. I usually enjoy curtido, but this version was extremely salty, making it difficult to eat. GALLO EN CHICHA A Salvadoran chicken dish glazed in a rich fermented pineapple sauce flavored with spices and dried chiles, somewhat reminiscent of molé. It was beautifully presented. Unfortunately, the chicken was undercooked, just as another reviewer had noted. The sauce was also quite heavy on salt. The cocktails were tasty, although they seemed light on alcohol. Normally, I can only manage a few sips of a cocktail, but these barely registered. Next time, I may try one of the Salvadoran non-alcoholic drinks instead. The ambiance was relaxed, lively, and fun. On our first 20 mile drive to visit, they blocked us at the inside of the unlocked front door at 3:12pm. Street parking can be difficult but a short drive\walk distance about a block away is a $3 an hour parking garage. The place looks clean and not too busy. We sit and our waitress Yanira M was perfect. Very nice, patient and attentive. We three shared two carne asada dinners with rice and refried red beans, two coffees, a coke and three pupusas. $101.36 before tip. The menu was confusing to us. First, the use of the menu words "red refried beans" confused us as refried beans have never been red in our lifetimes and these were pretty standard brown pinto bean looking and tasting. Maybe less confusion if they were called refried red beans. Then, we thought dinners came with pupusas. No. They came with two each thick tortillas (same as half pupusas with no filling as I could tell.) I enjoyed these thick homemade tortillas. The steak was not bad but I wish it had been served with its sizzle in tact. Salsa and coleslaw came as condiments though they might have been introduced with different names by Yanira. The coleslaw was a nice touch-served in a small jar with serving tongs. The salsa was tasting a bit like the V8 vegetable juice that you had as a kid or teen if you are a boomer. This meal could have really used some homemade spice sauce to add some kick to it. The main negatives today were the high music level at the back where we sat. That, and a busser man dragging some screeching and protesting chairs across the floor - to set up for a large party I believe. Real ear busters. The best part of the meal was the piping hot pupusas and our coffee. I would go back for those.
