The food is good the customer service is poor , I got a half torta ahogada it was very authentic, tasty , the bread was delicious, but seriously the customer service was awful, as soon as we got there we had to find a table that' was clean (all of them were dirty) the waitress came and asked if we were ready to order but didn't even give us menus. I asked her for one she got it for me and I placed my order, they didn't take my order correctly. Once they brought the food they brought a plate leaking with tomatoes broth and got it all over my purse at no point they acknowledged that. I had been craving a torta ahogada since my last trip to Guadalajara and had had this place bookmarked for awhile. I was finally in the area and decided to give it a try. The person working the counter was extremely friendly. Our food showed up quickly after ordering. We got a torta with carnitas and tacos dorados. Both had lots of carnitas and were drowned in the delicious sauce. They each came with some lightly pickled onions with oregano and we also added the hot sauce provided. My itch was scratched. The restaurant was packed during off hours (2:30pm) which was a good sign and had a neighborhood feel inside. When I paid at the register the woman asked if it was my first time and asked if I enjoyed it. I told her I did and I was looking forward to trying again. Tortas Ahogadas Mi Barrio is a small neighborhood spot and I stopped by to satisfy a craving for a torta ahogada - literally a "drowned sandwich." It's a specialty from Guadalajara, Mexico. This style of torta is made with birote salado, a regional bread with a crisp crust and a light inside that holds up to being drowned/drenched in salsa without getting soggy. It's notoriously hard to replicate outside of Guadalajara because the unique texture comes from the region's climate, altitude, and traditional fermentation methods. I ordered a torta ahogada carnitas. The bread was very good, and the carnitas were excellent--flavorful, juicy, and exactly what I was hoping for. I really enjoyed the meal, but the salsa was lacking--there just wasn't enough of it, and it didn't have the deep, red color and spicy kick that makes a torta ahogada truly great. The staff was incredibly nice and welcoming, and the place had a great lunchtime energy, though it could use a deep clean from top to bottom. The meat was delicious and the bread hold up amazingly well to the broth. And, I liked the hot sauce, limes and onions that they serve on the side. The broth was a little bland, however. The staff was very friendly and nice and the place was super clean - the rest room was absolutely spotless. I guess they heard the criticism about the lack of cleanliness. Good for them! read more

Oil needs to be cleaned or filtered daily. You can tell when old or dirty oil is being used and for them to be served cold, stale, and skimpy is no Bueno! The elder lady rang us up, and the price was higher We paid cash, and she was very quick to give us our change... but no receipt it took her by surprise as I asked for a receipt as I needed it for tax purposes... (business meal) she fumbles for a bit, trying to retrieve the transaction to print the receipt... Reluctantly handed it over, and we left... As the photo shows... There is no description of what items are, and I'm also being taxed multiple times for what? The majority of the restaurants' customers' base is unaware of california laws, regulations, requirements, and health codes... as most things... it goes unnoticed to the untrained eye... I really appreciated the carnitas torta, it is not a "fluffy" bread torta typically served at more gentrified type spots (you know, refried bean spread, avocado, pico de Gallo...basically a burrito on bread). Bread is more crusty, and stands up well with the broth that it is served on. Good Tortas Ahogadas but the environment feels a bit unsafe because of all the drunk people.

I've never had a bad experience here until today. While i was eating breakfast, 2-3 cockroaches crossed the table I was sitting at. Instead of the manager trying to make things right, they looked at me as if I was lying. The manager then made me still pay for my uneaten meal since I got disgusted by the cockroaches. I will never be coming here again unless they take the adequate pest prevention. The food is great, but obviously their sanitary standards are not there. read more

Writing this review to help the establishment grow and improve. We've been here before, about 7 years ago and had a horrible experience. Within the last year we saw the reviews had drastically improved & decided to give them another try. Why? We were REALLY hoping to find a good place for tacos de papas. Unfortunately-- the tacos de papa were served COLD, the tortas were OK. Bread was somewhat hard, also served cold, and meat was flavorless. The sauce is fire, so use with caution. I've been looking for a while for tortas ahogadas, and my wife finally found this place. We were not disappointed, and I'll definitely be back. The place is narrow but long, and they have a couple seats at a bar facing the kitchen. There was a power outage while we were there and it was probably 85-90 degrees in the restaurant. Still, though, I loved the sandwiches that much. I got a torta with mixed parts (some carnitas, some stomach parts), and it was served drowned in a moderately spicy sauce. They also had a side serving of ridiculously hot sauce. It was amazing - and everyone was sweating in the restaurant already, so there was no one to make fun of me for doing so too! Service is friendly, and there's tons of other options to choose from. But when I go back I'm gonna eat me a drowned sandwich. read more

I've had a few torta ahogadas before but this one was different, the bread was much tougher which after getting soggy gave it a good variety of textures making for a pretty interesting meal. My friend and I also got a fried potato and meat taco each which, while delicious, was overkill. You probably should just get tacos or a sandwich. The tortas here are bomb! They taste just like they do in Guadalajara. The tacos de papa are hella good, definitely recommend trying those. The parking on this street is always a nightmare. Try around the corner, there are a few repair shops with some street parking. I went to this place today Sunday 1/31/21 about 12:30pm I was so surprised when I started ordering the waitress that helped me and took my order was a older lady after taking my order and paying, I noticed she didn't wash her hands after touching register, atm payment machine, stapler and her mask, she went straight to the food without washing hands or wearing gloves to begin making orders and touching hard shell tacos with her hands. I've been to this place many times in past and never seen this until today I'm disappointed being that it's a restaurant and they should take all cleanliness precautions serious for the health & safety of customers and feel this waitress needs training on practicing more cleanliness habits working with food wash hands, wear gloves before handling food especially more so during this pandemic. read more

The delicious torta comes out drenched in a thick freshly made spicy sauce along with sliced onions that marinated in vinegar, and chopped cabbage. These are exactly like the ones in Guadalajara, spicy as hell! These make your lips burn, and your michelada comes in handy. Every bite is full of so much taste and the perfect texture combination. I also have ordered the sopes de papa (potato sopes) which are just as amazing. They make the sope from scratch, you wont be getting anything frozen it's fresh masa molded into your sope. The sope comes with tasty refried beans smothered all over topped with the perfectly seasoned papas and of course cabbage and a tomato based sauce.Everything here is very very very good. No joke whether you love yourself some carnitas and cueritos or your an addict for the spice or you just want another tasty Michelada this is your joint.
