I didn't have any expectations going into dinner. The outside of the building lacks "curb-appeal". I was pleasantly surprised by the food and great service. The inside atmosphere is dated and needs better lighting. It gives off a slightly dirty feel, but isn't. Our server was very warm and welcoming. The manager visited every table checking on meals and thanking the guests for coming in. I had a 20oz raspberry margarita "jumbo" it was very good and only $7.95. Our 6 year old daughter had a virgin Pina colada and said it was "yummy". We started with the chips and salsa (spicy) served at every table and then ordered guacamole. The server said they make it in-house, but it didn't taste or look freshly made. It was good, but not what I expect from a Mexican restaurant. For dinner, I had chicken and steak fajitas. The protein was tender and had a nice flavor. The dishes lack creativity and presentation, but for the great prices I didn't expect it. Over all it was a good place for a fast, family-friendly meal. I am a huge fan of Mexican restaurants, but many of them have a stereotypical atmosphere, which I am not fond of. Many of them are not very clean and the customer service is difficult to deal with due to the fact that the waiters don't speak English. Los Potrillos is great, because it has a clean new feeling, the food is great, including the prices, and the service is excellent. I can't recall (old age!) what we had or how much it was but both my wife and I commented that the food was good, the service was prompt, and we felt that we got our money's worth. I have eaten here before many years ago and had a fine experience then. But today was very disappointing. The service was very fast so that is a plus but there were many negatives. First, our chips and salsa arrived and only after we'd been eating for a few minutes did we realize the salsa was delivered with a soggy chip sitting at the bottom of the bowl. Whether it was because unused salsa is recycled from other customers or because it fell in before they brought it to us... Either way we were a little grossed out so promptly stopped eating salsa and ordered the cheese dip instead. It arrived after our food did, which all would've tasted better had it been hot. The beans and rice were lukewarm as was the cheese dip. And refried beans and queso are gross cold, which is what they became very quickly. The only thing steaming hot was the fajitas, which tasted great. We were under a bit of a time crunch so didn't want to have anything sent back and just wolfed it down as quickly as possible before it was cold. Also a negative, we were charged 95 cents for a bowl of shredded cheese. At any restaurant I go to, I feel there is no need to deliver such a large bowl as most of it goes unused. I'd much rather receive a small ramekin of cheese than have food wasted. Again, the service was good and quick and the food would've been great had it all been hot. read more

Excellent place to come and get some decent Mexican Food. I've tried several of the dishes. Last night I had the Shrimp Fajitas and she had the Tapatillo. Both were very good, hers being a bit more spicy. The chips and salsa never disappoint. They could be a meal all by itself. The wait staff is very attentive, making sure your glass is full and checking back to see how your meal is. The atmosphere is also very nice, not one of your run of the mill chain restaurants settings. Overall, we were very pleased and will be back soon. read more

After having taco salads here several times, we went on Cinco de Mayo at 11 AM and ordered them again. This time, they were just weird. There was slimy stewed tomato and pepper crap thrown in; the explanation was that those were ingredients used to flavor the black beans. We were given a 10% discount but are reticent about returning. A shame, because this is a friendly place with low prices and (usually) decent food. read more

First of all, I'd like to say I'm from Houston, Texas, where the Mexican food is really good and super cheap. I was passing through Virginia on the way back from DC and stopped by this place. I wasn't expecting much, being from H-Town, but I didn't expect the food to be THAT bad, and the service sub-par. I went in with my friend, a native Austinite, and he warned me for 5 minutes how we needed to go to the sushi place instead. It was freezing (like 30 degrees--I know, Texas heat and whatnot), and I wasn't about to go back outside. The people there had scowls on their face, and it took twenty forevers to be seated. It took even longer for the waiter to take our orders. I asked for chicken fajitas with just chicken and onions, and the people in the back put the onions ON TOP of the fajitas. That's just wrong. Then I took three bites and didn't want any more. It was absolutely disgusting. And I paid a good deal of money for the privilege of eating three bites of food and throw the rest away. We have a diarrhea-tastic buffet chain in Texas called Pancho's that was better than this. read more

Beware - the manager does not care! We went for dinner tonight. As we began eating we realized it was incredibly hot. We asked a person if she could turn up the AC. She said yes but didn't. We then mentioned to our waitress who informed us AC was broken!! We flagged down the manager, who said well it's really hot outside, well this, well that, then finally - yep - broken all day - supposed to come to fix it today but maybe not til tomorrow, yada yada. No apology. None. NADA. I am furious to be lied to, to put our health in danger, to receive NO APOLOGY from the manager. So if you want to go there - call first to make sure, a) AC is working B) they have a cook C) they are open. The food was flat - probably cook is passing out - but the soup was excellent. read more

This was the WORST place I have ever eaten. Coming from the West coast and recently new in town I was wanting some good Mexican food. Seemed pretty nice walking in, went to use the restroom and it was FILTH. Should of been a sign. Well the two people I was with and my self ordered food. This restaurant (I use the term loosely) was a horrible eating experience. My family usually does not eat out regularly so when we choose to go out, we try to select fun, economical, tasteful places. This was not one of those experiences. After the storm, our power of course had gone out, so after thinking of where to go I retrieved a coupon that came to us from Valuepack. We have gotten these many times before but never acted on them, until this time. Of all the choices in the Front Royal - Winchester area, we selected this place. Ok, get in the van kids, we going out to eat! Everyone much hungry, tired, cold expecting good "eats" arrived at this place at around 1pm. Upon entering, we were not impressed. It was dull, dark, and not very crowded, yet we had to stand waiting for assistance to sit down. We requested a window because it was so dark inside, but instead were escorted to a booth in the center row. There were 6 of us, I explained that we prefer a table to a booth for ease of access in and out, but nevertheless, this is what we got! There were atleast 5 tables available) So.....we pile in on top of each other, and quickly received menus and chips and salsa, yummm (or so we thought), we dive in eager to read the pages and pages of choices in very dim lighting (geez, we went out for lights), and then to our discovery after eating handfuls, there in the basket were not only chips but what appeared to be blackened fries, yummy....:( All mixed in with the stale chips. Of course we were still waiting for our lovely waitress to come to our aid possibly to take our orders...waiting and waiting and waiting and then ohhhhh, there she is.....excuse me miss, but what is this in our chips??? Oh, well,she explains, we use the same oil for french fries and chips, ohh....sorry. Okay!!! She grabs the basket saunters out to the "back" and comes back with another basket (do we dare???). Hmmmmm. She finally asks for our orders and I select grilled chicken salad. Ok, easy enough, what dressing would you like? What do you have? Blah blah blah....hmm, trying to cut calories, just bring me a side of vinegar please....What???? Vinegar, you know balsamic, cidar, anything, just vinegar. We don't have vinegar. Really???? Do you have catsup? Yes, but no vinegar. Ok. Enough said. My kids order, my spouse orders. I decline, just get a simple side of pico de gallo. OMG!! After again waiting and waiting and waiting she brings our drinks, water with lemon and I must say, the water from our creek tasted fresher and better. Should have have brought some. My daughter's chicken tenders were anything but tender, in fact resembled what was in the basket of chips.....of course my sweet spouse never complains, just eats and puts up. I ask him, so...where's the chicken (was to be beans, rice, chicken, tortillas etc), he says ahhhh, is this it? I looked and tried to decipher what that flat white round object was buried under a thick pukey brown substance (oh that was the beans!!!) and said, here it is! The lovely waitress never came back to the table except to collect the cash. Wow, now I get to use my coupon that I keep getting in the mail, and she immediately claims, Nope, sorry can't use that! W@HAT@@###. You have to use that between the hours of yada yada yada and because you didn't order anything from the main menu you can't use your $5.00 off. What a f......joke. So hubby puts down the cash....ugggg! Never once during this ordeal and believe me when I say, it was an ordeal, did the manager come over to apologize or even accept my humble coupon. TRUST ME, WE WILL NEVER BE BACK NOR RECOMMEND THIS "hole" TO ANYONE...YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF GOING DOWN IN FRONT ROYAL TO THE LOCAL TACO BELL...atleast the lights will be on... oh wait....that's super 8, but I'm sure their food is better too. read more
