What an gem found in an unassuming little gas station plaza. It's easily missed when going down Red Hill or Bristol, but if you're lucky enough to find parking in that small lot, swing by Los Primos Cantina #2 for some delicious tacos and quick service. Their tacos are fantastic. Buche was my favorite! Meaty, savory, came in a variety of shapes and textures. Lengua was super tender and yummy. Tripas (we asked for crispy) were good, with that signature chew to them haha. Carne asada was seasoned nicely and thankfully not overcooked. These tacos are loaded and worth the price. The fried fish burrito and shrimp burrito were very disappointing. The fish and shrimp in each one seemed a bit stingy, and they also didn't have much flavor. These burritos were packed with rice and beans, so they're great for those who enjoy that. However, I prefer burritos to have a decent amount of protein, so I wouldn't go here for burritos in the future. Staff were informative, and our large takeout order was completed within 15min, so they worked fast! The interior is very no-frills and plain, with a couple of tables for fast casual dine-in. New to the surrounding area. The gas station has always hid this place from my interest. I'm happy that I finally gave it a shot. I'll be coming more often especially now that Acapulco is closed. The lobby is small, about 4 tables inside, and two tables out front. I feel like this eatery is geared for 2go orders just because of the space and location. The tacos were $4.32 each. A little on the pricer side but they were much bigger than "street" tacos and had alot of meat in it. The burrito was $22. I was honestly expecting a regular sized burrito. That thang was massive. I should've just split that. Burrito had rice, beans, lettuce, pico, and choice of meat. I got Carne Asada. That burrito was sooo damn big! If your in the area give this place a shot. The closest Mexican cuisine to this place is Taco Stand at "The Camp". Imo this place has more of a Mom and Pop feel to it and you receive more bang for your buck! read more

I like this small outfit because of its convenient location and authentic fare. They have a salsa and condiment bar which includes cucumber slices, radishes, limes-a-plenty, peppers and five types of salsa. The only notable omission are chips. The menu has a lot of breakfast options and your standard taco/burrito combo choices. There's also a separate breakfast menu on the right from where I ordered the huevos rancheros plate. There's some nice touches like green chile bits and super fresh tortillas but ultimately the dish was too watery. Rice and beans on the side. There's also no sour cream or guacamole. I had to come try this Los Primos Cantina on the corner of Bristol and Red Hill because I have been a customer of the other location on Irvine Blvd and 17th Street in Costa Mesa for the last 30 plus years!! I know that sounds crazy. Would you be a customer THAT long if it wasn't good?!? Yeah, it IS THAT GOOD!! I have friends that still come to Los Primos Cantina whenever they come back to visit the area and it's always one of those places that you habitually visit to get the memories of your teenage years. My love affair started for me way back in the late 80's!! My friends and I knew about this place because it was so delicious, and authentic, and one of the best bargain places that you could eat and get a great meal. I'm very happy to report that it still is one of those places. Today I got my "usual" the bean and cheese burrito with onions and cilantro, both red and green sauce "Christmas style". It was AMAZING as it always has been and always will be. This particular location is on the corner behind the ARCO/AMPM station in the connected strip mall. There's other restaurants in this location as well but I came for the Los Primos Cantina specifically. I could see how much this place is kinda a favorite for working people in the area. They do have a very relaxed atmosphere inside with comfortable seats and a huge LCD TV. If I wanted to get away from my job and have a peaceful lunch this would certainly be my "go to" happy place. There's also some seating outside too if that's your jam. Just be aware that when you park it's close to the station and the flow of their customers. Be aware of that. I have had many of their dishes over my 30 years, carnitas, shredded crispy beef, tacos, salads, etc. I have NEVER had a meal that I didn't like. Their portions are very generous and many times I have split my meal and saved half for later. Los Primos Cantina has what you need they're an "institution" in Costa Mesa/Irvine area. Many other similar restaurants have come and gone but Los Primos Cantina is still here standing tall, feeding folks and putting smiles on faces of those people constantly!! If you're new to the area, maybe flying in from John Wayne Airport or just on your way to the beach, this is the spot for your Mexican food addiction. I HIGHLY recommend it. read more

Writing this on the toilet. Me and a couple friends came here during a morning bike ride in Newport back bay. Knew it was trouble when the couple before us had their child throwing up in the parking lot during their meal... Friend is sick and having stomach issues, the breakfast burrito was the worst I've ever had. Had trouble finishing it, watery beans, no potato's, an actual pebble/stone who knows what in my burrito. I like Mexican food. I'm not going to say I'm an expert or anything. (ok, I'm an expert) It's hidden behind a gas station. You might think you're heading the wrong way, but you're not. My first time here, I had the Tacos Al Pastor (a pretty regular go-to for me). They were as good (maybe better) than my favorite place. (5 out of 5) My second time, Chilaquiles, Red Sauce, scrambled eggs. Perfectly seasoned, crunchy and soft in just the right amount. I had to tell the guy at the register (didn't catch his name) that they were easily in the top five chilaquiles that I've ever had (and I've had a lot (A LOT), because I'm an expert (didn't you see that up top?). I have spent most of my life where the HB location used to be, walking distance from a few places I've lived. I was very sad to see them move and then halt the HB location. I was out for lunch last week and saw their new sign right down the way from my office. Excellent menu, great deals, fresh food and the workers are some great folks. Im so excited to see them back. Heads up, parking SUCKS here, just prepare to wait a little or order to go so you can run in and out. Over all the food is excellent, IMO some of the best black beans I have found to go. Tasty salsa bar with grilled peppers and all the fixins. My goto forever was the tostadas, they are massive and packed very well, I cant wait to take that memory walk again. Delicious! My coworker came back with this monstrous breakfast burrito and all sorts of salsa. I was amazed and asked where he got it. I decided to make the trek from my office to see how it was. The place is unassuming next to an Arco station and a dry cleaner, but don't let that dissuade you. I wanted some real Mexican food and I knew this place had the potential. As you walk in there was a nice salsa bar to the right and a great menu with all the greatest hits. I asked the person what's the best meat and he said "carnitas". I order a burrito especial with carnitas and loaded up on the salsa. I also ordered a side of chips and salsa. I brought it home and was delighted from the first bite. Delicious salsa, nice tortillas, and juicy carnitas. Everything came together in a symphony of flavors. The chips tasted freshly made and warm. The variety of peppers and onions really sealed the deal. Prices were reasonable for the amount of food (a lot!) . So I just got an asada burrito for this place, I was going to order it online but just decided to go in and order there. Mind you it was just beans cheese and carne asada, why was I charged $12.99? Los primos cantina is less than a half mile away from my place so I was hoping this will be a regular stop for me. Sadly, I doubt that'll be the case. I ordered the carne asada burrito and a fish taco and they came out pretty quickly. I started with the fish taco first and was impressed on the size of the taco, but immediately was disappointed on the lack of seasoning and flavor. The fish was mushy as though it was frozen and thawed a few times and had no hint of salt. I asked for the fried version expecting ensenada style fish taco but it was breaded rather than battered. The burrito especial wasn't that good either. Again, it was very under seasoned and the quality of the carne asada was questionable. It was finely chopped yet it had many tough morsels and connective tissue that were very hard to chew through. I'm not sure if they salted the beef as it was very bland. The burrito especial comes with cheese, but not much at all. Sad to say, in an area with so many great Mexican restaurants, this one doesn't stand out at all. read more
