    Let's get this party started

Calo Kitchen has an awesome lunch vibe: the decor is beautiful, modern, and inviting. Unfortunately, our first impression with the welcome staff almost had us leaving before we ever got to experience it. Two staff members were helping one person with a gift card, which is fine, but neither acknowledged my wife and me when we walked in. A simple "We'll be right with you" would have made all the difference. A little more training on that first point of contact would go a long way. Thankfully, Mina changed everything. She has to be one of the best servers I've encountered. Friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, helpful, and her recommendations were spot-on. Mina just gets it--not because it's her job, but because she genuinely understands people. That kind of hospitality is hard to teach. The drinks were also on point. The bartender knew exactly how much spirit to put in the cocktails--you know what I mean. The food was delicious. We had the halibut tacos and short rib enchilada, and both were excellent. A great fusion of modern preparation with traditional flavors. No deduction in stars for the poor first impression because Mina was THAT good. She made the experience memorable and is a tremendous asset to Calo Kitchen. Hasta Luego Calo' and Mina

We again experienced delicious food and drinks along with great customer service. Had the shrimp taquitos and quesadillas. So good. We also had the caddy margarita, the pricey martini with 1942, Tito's and micheladas. We spent a lot of money but it's worth it for the quality and level of service. The setting is peaceful and beautiful with low lighting and comfy booths. The negative - the women's bathroom. How disgusting. Calo, do better to have staff check the stalls. This was unacceptable as a patron spending time and money here. Don't get me wrong - the gross woman that left this mess is the main culprit but Calo needs to rectify the situation.

What can I say? Everyone kept recommending CALÓ to me, but I never take anybody's word for a restaurant. We all have different palates, and what hits for one person might not hit for another. But DAMN!!! This place hits. From the start, the staff was awesome and very attentive. The bartender took care of me, poured me some water, walked me through the menu, and made me feel welcome without hovering. I started with the Mango Caliente cocktail -- 10/10, hands down. Sweet, spicy, refreshing, and balanced. That alone had me thinking, okay... maybe everybody was right about this place. Then came the ribeye tacos, ordered medium rare. I took the first bite and literally just stared at them for a second like, "Nah... let me take another bite." Yep. Every bite was delicious. The ribeye was cooked right, everything tasted fresh, and the flavors worked together instead of fighting each other. The chips and salsa were fresh, side of the black beans, which contain pork. Those beans were mouthwatering. The whole place had a great vibe too. Staff was on point, people were enjoying themselves, drinks were hitting, and most importantly, the food backed it all up. As a chef, I'm picky about execution, but I'm also not looking for reasons to tear a kitchen apart. I just want good food prepared with care -- and CALÓ delivered. I will definitely be coming back. There are way too many drinks and entrées on that menu I still need to try. You got me, CALÓ. Everyone was right this time.

Food was good, rib eye tacos delicious, I ordered salmon asado and it was good, not delicious but good, I asked the waitress's for salsa for the ribeye tacos and she bring an habanero one that was very good, when we paid they charged for the salsa for the tacos!! I though that it's a little bit estrange to charge for salsa when you are ordering tacos! I

Modern, trendy Mexican restaurant when celebrating a nice occasion! Food for everyone !! ====== Service was pretty good for the most part. We got checked up on a lot, but then it kinda dwindled a bit toward the end which was odd. Had to gio and find the server. Food portion here is generous, most plates are shareable. Ahi ceviche 4/5 Lots of ahi and mango, I liked the freshness of the fish and the sweetness from the mango. Wish it was cut a little chunkier tho! Could do with less chipotle mayo on the chips Free chips and salsa 4/5 Seasoned black beans are yummy, the red salsa they have is good but not amazing Kids bean and cheese burrito 3.5/5 Good but not amazing. Pinto beans are creamy and the red seasoned rice is tastier than their corn white rice. Two burritos are half palm sized, perfect for little hands. Queso fundido 5/5 Great balance on this dish. Came with some pork as protein and charred veggies, and a sublime salsa. The flour tortillas have a nice chew that went super well with the smooth cheese and spicy salsa. Halibut tacos 4/5 Not the largest tacos, maybe 3 bites for each taco, but the flavor was yummy with the seasoning they used on the fish. Comes with beans and rice. Margarita 4/5 Was strong and large! Outside seating was quite warm, but the bar area was much cooler weather wise. Def need to try their burrito!

So so good! This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant! Not only was the food fresh, unique and fantastic, but the service was above and beyond any dining experience I have had lately. During our visit, our party of 6 was seated promptly and the service was very attentive the entire time. Meanwhile, the place was packed!!! I mean no empty tables kinda packed. Food was delivered hot and fresh, bursting with flavor. Truly one of the best dine-in experiences. And...one of the most affordable, bang-for-you-buck, elevated dining experiences I've had locally in a long time. Look forward to visiting again soon.

The queso. One of the better dishes

IMO, elevated Mexican isn't easy to do. Authentic Mexican is SO flavorful, SO delicious and then you try to make that fancier and Americanize it and that's no easy feat. TL;DR you're not coming for the best Mexican as the food is just fine, but the ambiance is moody and romantic and the service is great. (Oh but you're paying for all that.) Came for a group dinner and although it's in a mall, you won't feel that way when you walk in as they manage to block the outside surroundings pretty well. The dark lit restaurant is romantic but not overly stuffy and the outdoor/indoor design keeps the mood light, almost like you're on vacation. It's a tequila bar and they don't really have a full bar so I hope you like tequila or mescal. If you do, they have great drinks although do you have to put tajin on everything? The food is where things start to fall apart. Like unsalted guac, unbalanced and overly sweet ahi tartare. They spent a lot of time on presentation and not enough time on truly balancing the flavors. The queso was the most flavorful with the pork and plenty of tangy and rich flavors but otherwise most everything else was forgettable. You can tell a lot about a Mexican restaurant by the chips and these chips were crunchy but SO bland. The beef birria tacos were pretty good but hard to mess up a fried taco with consomme. The main courses were again fine. Beautifully plated but flavor was just so so. While there was decent flavor on my halibut tacos, the fish itself had little flavor. The steak was cooked well. A little chewy but again not a lot of flavor overall. We got one of every dessert. Again all fine not great. The flan was by far the best, so recommend that if you like the flan. The service was the best part. Really attentive, customer service oriented, friendly. Again this is a great spot for a date or a special evening if you aren't that focused on food. But for the price, you want the food to be just as good as everything else here.

Found a nice place to eat when I shop/visit South Coast plaza ! Its located on the lower level by the side entrance near the carousel and Verni chocolate & gelato shop. It has beautiful tropical decor with a huge bar area. There are also semi private dining rooms ,booth seating and patio seating . We chose to sit at the bar since we really wanted to get a drink and just relax and enjoy the vibe. The bartender came over to say hello and took our drink requests and also our food order as well. Got an appetizer of chicken taquitos which was really great generously stuffed with meat and drizzled wirh 3 tasty sauces ! We ordered a couple of drinks 1. Strawberry margarita 2. Cucumber cilantro margarita & two entrees. 1. Carnitas plate ( with rice & beans) 2. Spinach enchiladas ( with rice & beans) *Complimentary chips with salsa & BEAN DIP * The bean dip was so delicious that I hardly used the salsa which was good on its own. Although both entrees was good and satisfying and we could only eat half the meal . Great place for a meet up with friends ! I'm betting the bar scene is great in the pm! Only disappointment was that they don't offer Happy hour ( Sad face).

I've been here twice now and it was consistently good. I kinda think of it as a slightly lower level than Javiers although they're very similar. Food is good, service is great, ambiance is lively with a tropical modern twist. This second time I had the Pollo Chipotle which came with a chile relleno. The sauce is very creamy with a good kick. This place is good for a nice dinner or happy hour imo.

We decided to try Calo for our weekly lunch date and it was pretty empty at open. We got sat immediately and I decided to go with the steak fajitas. While we waited for our entrees, they served complimentary chips and salsa/beans which were delicious and definitely a plus for the restaurant. The steak fajitas came out presented well but was a bit disappointed in the seasoning. The steak wasn't seasoned well and a bit bland which led to the wraps feeling a little flavorless. I added a decent amount of salsa to add some kind of flavor profile but for the price of these fajitas, most likely wouldn't order again. I will say the restaurant is beautiful but definitely on the pricier side for those looking for a quick meal. I would suggest Cali for a nicer date night or special occasion lunch.

Located in South Coast plaza near where the carousel is. Calo is an upscale Mexican restaurant with a beautiful bar and nice interior ambiance. It's easy to make reservations online via yelp. Service was a bit slow, but really enjoyed the complimentary salsa and black bean dip they start you with, as well as my steak fajitas. They cooked it a perfect medium rare and it was seasoned well!

Calo is an upscale Mexican restaurant that is busy even at 5 pm on a Monday. It is easy to reserve a table through Yelp. The food is well flavored and the service is attentive. Drinks are creative and fun with emphasis on tequila. We will return to try something else on their varied menu.

We've been here a few times before and always thought it was decent. So, we made the last minute reservation online and got here 15 minutes early. When we arrived, there was a short line, but per the reservation instructions, one of my friends went in to check in while we waited outside. Friend: Hi, I'm checking in for a reservation. Bartender: What time is your reservation. Friend: 10 Bartender: What time is it now? Friend: 9:45 Bartender: Then I'll see you at 10pm. Friend came back annoyed and explained what happened. The bartender didn't say it in a joking way, but with attitude and annoyance. Most staff would respond "Thank you for checking in, we will let you know when your table is available." We weren't going to let this ruin our night, so we waited and were seated by the hostess. The bar itself is dimly lit and very tight. The music was loud enough that we had to almost yell to hear each other. The waiter came by soon after and was extremely friendly. We said we'd been here a few times before, but it's been a while. He refreshes our memory by saying they specialize making variations of classics. They want customers to focus on the flavors and that's why the menu doesn't list the spirit in their drinks. Also, they only make drinks on the menu because their drinks are prebatched/premade. We ask for recommendations which he was happy to give. We each order a drink and a snack for the table. As we're talking (very loudly so we can hear each other), we lose track of time before we realize that it's been 20 minutes and we haven't gotten our drinks yet. For something that's prebatched, it shouldn't take long. Before we can flag down the waiter, he comes by and apologizes that they lost our order and had to put it back in. We appreciate the honesty and say it's no problem. 5 minutes later, our drinks and food arrives. He again apologizes for the wait and has a second order of our food that he's including for free. Honestly we were ok with just the apology, but extra food too? Hell yea. Sounds like it was turning around. The drinks were okay. Not amazing, but definitely above average 3.8 / 5. The snack, bread and butter, were surprisingly good. 4.5 / 5 When we asked for the check, the waiter brought the credit card reader and told us we can swipe our card any time and left it on our table. We look at the bill and realize the waiter not only gave us the 2nd snack for free, but comp'd 2 of the drinks also. We all agree this waiter is GREAT. So why the 2 stars? Well first let me say, I would leave it at 1 star, but the waiter definitely earned them another. We wanted to pay cash, so we waited for him to come back. Instead, the original rude bartender comes by and realizes we haven't paid yet. We ask if we can pay with cash. He explains that they don't accept cash. Friend: Are you sure? *Proceeds to try to insert cash into the chip reader slot* Bartender: You're pretty stupid, aren't you? Friend: Maybe if I swipe it instead *Doubles down and proceeds to swipe the cash through the magnetic strip reader* Bartender: Wow, you really are stupid. My friend is a 100% a goofball and having fun with the bartender. It was OBVIOUS that he was joking. Was it funny? A little. Was it stupid? 100%. But for the bartender or ANY customer service staff to call a paying customer "stupid", that's simply unacceptable. We're all pretty pissed at this point and simply swipe the card and the bartender leaves. As I said earlier, we've come here a few times. We don't live especially close, but when we're in the area, we would always consider coming here. Now, there's no chance. For any business, even if your drinks and food are great, customer service can easily DESTROY your experience and that's exactly what the bartender did. Note to the male bartender with no hair: You really shouldn't be interacting with customers. You were rude from the start and have no sense of humor. Could you be having a bad day? Sure, but that's not an excuse to be rude to customers. I know management saw my original post because it was removed, probably because I referred to the bartender by his hairstyle (or lack thereof) multiple times. If they rather remove my post than deal with their bartender, that's another sign to avoid this place.

CALVIN IS THE BEST BARTENDER EVER…read more Summary: Fascinating place; wonderful drinks; adorable setup (confession booth; actual carriage...); on-theme decor (don't drink every time you see a cowboy with a poodle for your liver's sake, please.) Review: My partner & I were across the street at the shopping center & I wanted to hit up a bar since we don't know the area. I was the one who found this on Yelp, and he was like ...yeah, idk. I thought it'd be cool so we crossed the street & walked over. Okay, he literally fell in love with this place. A coworker recently asked him for a bar rec & he mentioned Cowboys and Poodles!! The concept is very cute (being a speakeasy) & when we came in we were greeted by Calvin who is hilarious & who makes excellent drinks. They had this very intriguing drink on the menu & he helped me decide. I would for sure come back & have it again + try the others. My partner noticed the very extravagant and peculiar decor here. The ceiling of the confession booth literally has cowboys ON poodles (!!!). He hypothesized it's all custom-made bc this is just too random. We loved it! My partner found himself counting down the seconds until these guys got out of the carriage, LOL. We swooped in immediately. It was sooooooooo cute! & strange! We pretended to be some kind of royalty in a different century. Whaaaaat a vibe. Saying again that Calvin is the best Even if this place wasn't so cool, his banter + his drinks would've still led to 5 stars. Come see for yourself!!

We wanted to stop at a random bar in the area since we were out here for our friends birthday (you…read morecan take a look at the previous review). I searched Yelp and this came up a couple miles away and we liked the name of it. Haha! Cute little place. And I mean, LITTLE. Not big at all and hard to maneuver once inside. Pretty cramped. Hard to get a drink. Had a group of 4 people totally cut in front of me and my husband. We went to the other side of the small bar and waited several minutes.... Fortunately, the girl in front of me was sweet to offer to order our drinks for us. The decor was fun and festive but we won't go back. Not our style, not our type of bar to hangout in. Plus we pretty much surpassed the general age of the crowd. Like probably by at least 15 years. HA!
