1. I LOVE Aimee!!! 2. I live one block from here. It's completely my bad that I haven't come sooner. 3. This salon saved the day. 4. Do NOT get intimidated by all the fun hair styles and colors the artists have here. They know what they're doing!! Starting with the last point. I had scheduled an appointment at another salon nearby. When I walked in with my (small ESA) dog, I was immediately told that dogs weren't allowed at the salon. I was shocked and a bit defeated, but on the way home, I decided to check in with Badlands to see if they allow dogs and I'm so glad they do. First off, Jeanelle, the receptionist was completely kind, welcoming, and exactly the right energy that I could hope to encounter after such a disappointing experience. She not only confirmed that they allow dogs, but told me they had a slot available (walk-in on a Saturday) with their Senior Stylist, Aimee, and handed me a glass of wine while I waited. (Great start) I was also so happy to notice the rainbow flag on the door. I was already getting the vibe that everyone is welcome here. I'm already convinced that it was complete serendipity that I got paired with Aimee. She got me right away. You could tell she started out being a bit careful with her recommendations, as we had never met before. But I explained to her that I'm a boss at work and I love a bit of an edge, and asked her what she would do if she could do anything. I loved that recommendation even more. My hair is very thin and it's hard to make it look like it has volume. She recommended some higher layers, a bit more off the ends to nix the damaged hair, less length off the fringe framing my face, and a bit of a Bardot bang. What came out was absolutely perfect. I'm also a makeup artist on the side, and it's a blessing and a curse, but I have ACUTE attention to detail. When I say I had no feedback at the end of the cut, I mean it. And this never happens. One final thought - I may have been one of the people who was a bit intimidated by this place subconsciously at at first, often peering curiously through the windows as I passed on my way home from work, not knowing if I was "cool" enough. But then I remembered when I used to work at the MAC Cosmetics store. People would come in and right away tell me they didn't want the bright makeup I was wearing, and it finally clicked. As a professional, I would never put that makeup on them if they weren't comfortable as much as the artists here wouldn't give me a style I didn't want. I highly recommend coming to this salon if you want a cutting edge look and to feel welcomed. I'm so grateful to live a block from here and I look forward to seeing Aimee soon! read more

I came here to get my first undercut, totally trusting other reviews. I also appreciated that it is a unisex salon, which I wanted because I preferred that a woman do my hair initially. I don't know, barber shops are intimidating. I showed the hairdresser a photo of what I wanted from Pinterest. It was a lotus design. She said that she would try to replicate it, but I guess she messed up and decided it would be better to freehand a design on the back of my head. When I used to live in Brooklyn a few years ago, this was my go-to salon. I live in LA now but I am temporarily based in BK and my hair needed some tending to so it was a no-brainer to go to Badlands. I have balayage and just needed my roots touched up. When I went to the salon, I explained what my stylist in LA does (balayage with a few foils in front) and I showed her a picture of my hair when I last did it so she could see the color/depth etc (picture on the left). I wanted the exact same color. My Badlands stylist thought it would be better to do all foils instead of balayage which concerned me a little bit but she felt confident after seeing the photo that it would have the same effect. So, we foiled, we toned, we dried and, ultimately, my hair looked nothing like what I wanted - I went from blonde back to brunette (picture on the right). After she dried it and asked what I thought, I said it wasn't what I asked for or anything close to the picture. She said she probably left the toner on too long and asked if I wanted to live with it for a few days to see if I could get used to it (and also with a few washes, it might lighten). I said no (because, again, it wasn't what I asked for) and that I would prefer to fix it right then as I was going out of town. I was told no because she had more clients after me but I could make a follow-up appt in a week. She wasn't apologetic and, honestly, paying for the service was a tough pill to swallow. I made an appt for a week later but ended up canceling because I didn't feel confident that she would be able to fix it or that she cared enough to really rectify the situation. It was also not made clear to me if I would have had to pay for that follow-up appt since, technically, the stylist messed up. So now I have to pay even more money to fix her mistake elsewhere. I really don't like leaving bad reviews but I am bummed out by the whole experience and I wish I had been treated with a little more care and some semblance of customer service. read more

I came in on a Tuesday night - I loved that they're open late. They actually understand that when you work in Manhattan a salon that closes at 6pm isn't ideal. I was initially a little nervous as this place doesn't fit the "spa & salon" mold I usually patronize - the barber part REALLY through me off but keep reading for a great recommendation. Addison was my stylist and she was fun & friendly but most of all she was incredibly understanding. I came in with a couple of pictures and ideas of what I wanted to get done. We had a casual conversation about my hair habits and goals. Based on that, she figured out a style that combined my inspiration and what would personally work for my hair. The salon atmosphere was clean, laid back, and friendly. In addition to the typical beverages offered at a salon - they offer beer and wine here as well! #whaaaaaat I left the salon all happy and excited about my new haircut and waited a couple of days to write this review..I have been waiting for that "warm & fuzzy", salon-fresh feeling to wear off and it hasn't! I've never before left a salon only to go home and cry. I booked an appointment for a cut ($125) and single process color ($130). From the moment I sat down in Jenn's chair, her attitude towards me was curt. She barely touched my hair during the consult and when she did, was rough with it. She answered my questions with a condescending tone and the minimal amount of information. The consult and cut lasted about 10 minutes. She then quickly and roughly applied color to my roots. She set a timer for 35 minutes and walked away. I assumed she was having a bad day but then her next client sat down in the chair directly next to me. Jenn was friendly and engaging with this client, taking time to chat with her and make her comfortable. It was like night and day. I could tell Jenn was also respectful in the way she physically touched her other client's hair. I was really upset and at the same time felt trapped because I had the color dye in my hair and couldn't just walk out. After about 35 minutes of friendly banter and service with her client, Jenn came back to my chair, saying the timer had gone off. She roughly washed the color out of my hair. I sat under the hair dryer as eager as possible to leave. At this point I was upset and mortified at how I had been treated and was desperate to leave the salon. Jenn asked me to come back to the chair so she could finalize my hair. She noticed that I was upset and asked if something was wrong. I told her no because I had no desire to directly interact with her anymore. She dried my hair, this time actually being gentle, probably because it was obvious I was upset. She did not re-check my haircut to see if it needed to be refined. She just told me I was done. I bolted out and ran home, where I broke down crying. I've been to Badlands over the years and never had this experience with the other stylists- who were attentive and warm. Update: I did call the salon and left a message for the owner, who quickly returned my call. I felt she was respectful about my feedback and also conveyed that the stylist's behavior was not in line with the values of the salon. She did mention that she would hold a whole staff meeting to discuss client treatment. She also offered to refund the services. read more

The people here are really great to work with. I came for a student cut and they were super nice and helpful and gave me a really good cut even while she was practicing her technique. There was always someone watching over her and making really good recommendations about what to do with my type of hair and my styling. Overall I would say this place is awesome and I come back for both student as well as regular cuts. I think there's a cash fee of $20 for student cuts. I highly recommend Addison and Sydney! I've been coming to Badlands since it opened, some years ago-- DiDi used to be the one doing my cuts! Then it was Sarah (also awesome) Then I moved back to Jersey for a while (Hurricane messed up my commute), then I moved back and it was Kayla. (awesome) Now it's Rachel. (awesome) My hair is long and and straight fine and can get limp and boring if i let it. B/c I have to keep it kinda boring for work, but hate having boring/unsexy hair myself, it had always been a tricky balance to strike until I started visiting with the badlands crew. Every cut I've ever gotten here has been boring enough for work, low-maintenance enough for early mornings, BUT also easy to turn into a super swingy and fun and pretty and sexy 'do on those occasions when I want to do something more fun w/ my hair. idk how they do it? it's all in the layers and angles/face-framing i guess. Cuts are priced well for the area and the level of the barber/stylists' experience. Interim bang trims w/ the person who cut your hair are free, bang trims w/ someone else there are cheap (I think $5? $10?) (tip always!). Bonus: while they always have a lot of great products available, they've never once pushed me to buy stuff if i hadn't already inquired about it/ asked for something during my cut. Over the years, Badlands has consistently welcomed a wide, wide clientele and they make no assumptions about what you want when you walk in. A stylish friend of mine recommended visiting Natasha here when I was recently complaining about my lack of a solid spot to get my hair cut, so I took his advice. What a great experience! Natasha was awesome and friendly from the get-go, and made me feel comfortable immediately. The rest of the staff were very welcoming, as well. We talked quickly about what I wanted to do, then they washed my hair and we got to it. Natasha offered just the right amount of friendly banter in between paying attention to the task at hand and doing a killer job. Most of the cut was done with scissors, which I like, and the end result was great. I asked her to make me look more handsome, and although I'm not sure she achieved that, she certainly didn't make me any more funny looking. So I've got that going for me. Badlands is a salon with stylists (trained professionals who will actually give you suggestions and advice) who give you their full attention and take their time. As such, you are going to pay for this service. As a guy, I am not accustomed to coughing up much more than $25 for a cut, but as my future flashes before my eyes and I acknowledge that the hair on my head will not be with me forever, I figure I can pay a bit more to have it cut properly and look good while I have it. I don't normally write reviews but had to share my recent Badlands experience. I live in Park Slope and have walked by the salon for years wanting to check them out. I've had other cuts in the neighborhood with hair stylists that just didn't get what I was looking for and left me feeling "meh" about the cut. This time around I wanted to chop several feet off my hair so I wanted to find the right person! I did. When I went in, I immediately met Jenn who was super easy to talk to and was very ready to help me make this major shift. I booked an appointment for a few days later and felt completely safe in her chair. She chatted just the right amount, was super professional and the whole process seemed rather effortless for her -- the sign of someone who has lots of experience. Badlands played me. So I go into Badlands for the first time a day before I leave for my birthday trip. I told the stylist I would just like a trim as I am actually trying to grow out my hair. I told her I would like some off the ears and maybe a bit tapered on the sides and back, but only if she could taper it without taking off too much length on the sides. She said she could do it. Next, she takes the buzzer and just starts shaving the side of my head, after I just told her I was trying to grow my hair out. I honestly should have spoken up, but I rolled with it and asked her to just give me a fade by going a bit shorter on the sides. After that, she suggested she could always give the top of my head a bit of texture without taking off any length. I should have asked if this was going to cost more but didn't want to look cheap so I didn't. Next, she washes my hair, slaps some product in it and puts me under a dryer. I have pretty curly ringed hair and it came out looked like a wavy, frizzy mess and she said wow looks great and that was it, I even asked her "oh that's it?" I'm surprised she let me walk out of the salon looking like that. I go to pay for the haircut thinking I'm going to pay $30 for the "sides & back" service not realizing they were going to charge me an extra $50 for "texture" without taking off any length. So I paid $80 for the hair plus $20 for a tip because I didn't want to fuck the stylist over, so $100 to get the sides of my head shaved. I was played. I was kind of feeling whatever about it until I came home to inspect my hair (realizing she never gave me a hand mirror and spun me around to let me see the back). Upon coming home, I saw that in fact, I did not get a fade, its a blotchy shaved mess, as you can see the back is literally just shaved and then stops. I can't believe someone would let their work walk out of the salon looking like that. So now I'm leaving for my weekend birthday trip with botched hair. read more

I'm probably one of the fussiest people you'll meet when it comes to getting a haircut. Very particular, and went to several salons/barbers before settling on here. Super professional staff. Always a clean environment. And they even offer you a beer when you walk in. Unfortunately I am not happy with the result of my haircut I received from a stylist here. It was expensive and the hairstylist did not listen to what I asked for. I specifically told her I like my natural hair (mix between wavy and curly) and thick, but that I needed more shape to it because it can get frizzy and puffy. She displayed understanding before the haircut began. I told her that I also don't like a really layered look, especially not short layers. It appeared as though we were on the same page. When the haircut was done, I really did not like it as it was choppy with a ton of short layers. I didn't know how to react in the moment and because I did not want to create an awkward/uncomfortable situation, I thanked the hairstylist and told her it looked good. I got home and was so sad. I literally can't even wear it down and haven't in weeks (since I got the haircut). I feel like she did exactly what I asked her to not do, which was really disappointing and frustrating. I am very unhappy with the haircut I received here, but I will say that the customer service was good. The woman at the front desk was very sweet and accommodating. Also, the hairstylist was very friendly, but that feels irrelevant due to the fact that the haircut was not at all what we talked about to begin with. Will definitely not be coming back. read more

This is a great salon with a super friendly and welcoming vibe! Sydney did my haircut and color, and she was excellent. She asked a lot of specific clarifying questions, which I really appreciated (my last haircut somewhere else, the stylist decided to ignore my request and just do what he felt like, and I was very unhappy with it). I have a short, asymmetrical haircut that I'm pretty particular about, and she gave me exactly what I wanted. Same with the color--I came in with a more purple color and wanted it a bit more pink, and she absolutely nailed it. I've gotten a lot of compliments on it! read more

The salon and the people there are very nice but the haircut was too expensive ($73) for what they did and I'm not super jazzed about it now that I've washed it a few times. I had short but shaggy hair and asked for an undercut, since it's an easy hairstyle to work with and is great for the summer, but the way it was cut means there are a bunch of pieces of hair that are too short to lay flat and instead floof out to the sides and back. And the line between my shaved hair and long hair isn't straight. I'd say 5 stars for fitting me in last minute and for the staff, but 2 for the price and cut. read more

This review is only for customer service. I live a block away from Badlands and was itching to try something new, so I booked a 6 pm appt. I got there at 6 pm on the dot. By 6:25, I said forget it. I can understand running 5-10 minutes late but 25 minutes is too much. I think the worst part is that the front girl came over and asked me if it was ok that it was going so late and I said "no, it's not, but please don't say anything to the stylist." She said she wouldn't and then walked away. Two minutes later, she says something to the stylist, who then gives me a dirty look. At that point, why would I entrust my hair to someone who I pissed off? I really wanted to like this place, and I'm really sad that this was my experience. read more

Dammit Badlands I wanted to give you a good review. My hair was to the middle of my back, my ends were in terrible shape and I was looking for a new haircut. I found a picture online, a shag cut that fell to a little below my collar bone. My stylist, Ainsley? (Started with an A, from Oklahoma) gave me the worst haircut I've ever had in my life, outside of when I was in junior high school and my friend tried to cut my bangs (I'm 45). I couldnt see what she was doing as I have terrible eyesight and had to take my glasses off for the duration of the cut. OK where to begin. Length. She cut my hair TO MY CHIN! not below my collarbone as I specifically asked and showed her on a picture. A picture that you can clearly see, that is not shadowed to prevent you from seeing the length, not hidden under a hat or a scarf. TO. MY. CHIN. Style. I'm assuming that she is used to doing childrens haircuts only as my hair was a bob. A bob to my chin that looks like I am trying to relive my youth, as in I have a 6-year old's haircut. Not cute on a 45 year old. Technical Skill. I had sections of hair that were many inches longer in certain areas and when i would pull the pieces of my hair on each side of my head they were different lengths... It was like Helen Keller cut my hair. There was no professionalism in making sure that the length was the same all around, and when i say it was uneven, i mean there were a few areas of my head where the hair was about 4 inches longer when I pulled it down. so like a curl of hair that went almost all the way around my neck, from the side of my head by my neck. So a recap. Didn't give me anywhere near the hairstyle I wanted, cut my hair about 6 inches shorter than what i wanted and didnt even do a good job at giving me a 6 year olds bob. Im not one to normally write such a nasty review but wow, WORST. JOB. EVER. I would totally recommend this place to someone I dislike immensely. read more

Cassandra did my hair (cut, color), as a walk in, last minute. She was not into talking, she seemed not to like questions, it was an exceedingly quiet 3 hours. Music? Ranged from 50s to metal. Drink? Didn't offer. Cost? 300. I am told this is average for long hair, in NY, yipes! Quality of cut/color?: I said: "Do what you want," which seemed to annoy her--she cut off three inches, thinned it out, dyed it brown (pretty color). My 10 year old also got a haircut--45 bucks--looked the same or worse than the ones he gets at the local barber shop--so definitely not worth the splurge on kids. I had read so many great things about Badlands that I was really looking forward to my appointment. I wish I could also give a high rating. Here are the reasons why I can't: The front desk person was nice and offered me something to drink, I said water would be great as it was really hot outside. Never did get the water. The water thing is not actually a big deal to me. What is a big deal is that my stylist's Cassandra's station was FILTHY. There was a towel on her table, with a bunch of styling tools on it, COMPLETELY covered in other people's hair. It was disgusting. I did think of leaving when I saw that. But I really needed my haircut and did want to have to reschedule given the way my schedule is. I just pretended I didn't see it and washed my hair vigorously when I went home. The haircut was ok. We had a terrible experience here, and if I can do anything to help others, it's to recommend staying clear of this salon's "junior stylists". My daughters long beautiful hair was butchered by a young man with a mohawk. Her hair could have been donated to Locks of Love - it was that long, and this young, inexperienced "stylist", with shaking hands, cut her hair just under her ear! We'd asked for a long bob, grazing her shoulders. It was a horrific experience, and NO ONE from the salon reached out to check in on us or even apologize. This update is super late, but after my last review, Badlands' owner reached out to me and offered me a refund and a free haircut to compensate for my subpar experience. I didn't feel right about accepting both, but I accepted the free haircut and made an appointment with Natasha. She was great--easy to talk to, helpful, and honest about what was going on with my hair. The cut looked awesome. My last experience here must have been a fluke--everyone has bad days--and the salon really put in the effort to make sure that in the end, I was satisfied. read more

Normally speaking, I usually go to barber shops to get my hair done but I was willing to try something new and something different and I'm glad I did. So I got my usual haircut which I'll get once a month or once every other month and Rachel did an amazing job. We also had a really interesting conversation while she cut my hair and spoke of life among other things and it was an all around brilliant experience. Did I mention that I even got a free cup of coffee as well? I did and it was great. Will I come back here again? You bet your life I am! read more
