Great vibe here. I love the way Joseph cuts my hair! He's an artist, whose purpose is to help your hair reach its potential. I'm learning a lot about how to care for my hair through cuts with him. I used to be extremely discouraged with my frizzy, thin hair, and now I'm having fun with it again. A great cut can do that. Also, He's bold. The man who cut my bangs - didn't catch his name, tallish, skinny and washed-out looking - was rude and mediocre. He punctuated his responses to my questions with "do you understand" which was quite annoying and pathetically patronizing. When I asked him to blend my bangs in on the sides, he rudely said he was giving me a free bang trim and didn't want to touch my haircut. I didn't ask for free, I asked for a good bang trim. 'Free', is not a license to do a mediocre job. Which he did. Rudely. It's possible that the some of the other stylists in this place are great. However if it isn't worth taking a risk, don't bother with this salon. You might just end up with some mediocre rude guy. read more

I've gone here three times now, and every time they've given me an amazing haircut, that's a combination of exactly what I asked for and something that has grown out very well. I have very thick long hair that needs to be layered and thinned out, and the haircuts were great. My hair settled within a few days and just fell naturally so nicely. Its a little pricey for my tastes, but then again, its a good deal for a good cut. Nice places simply cost more. Oh, and they do free bang trims, a great way to touch up the style. read more

After letting the students of Aveda have their way with my hair twice, my husband decided to send me to a salon with "real stylists" (this is not to say the Aveda thing was bad , i just seemed to be - how shall I say - unfinished each time) as a Christmas present. The young woman who worked on my hair at Harmony was very nice and professional. She gave me an Agnes Deyn-style cut that I haven't had retouched since. I received many compliments when it was first executed and It has grown out beautifully. When it gets long enough, I think I'll go back with a picture of Joan Chen from "The Last Emperor" (with the western style haircut she sported when her chacter was in exile in Shanghai). I bet she'll knock that one out of the park too. read more

I've been going to this place for years and it's always been a fantastic experience. It's a family run salon with real stylists and experience, and whenever I want to try something new they're always willing to work with me to figure out exactly what I want (I'm a guy by the way, but both of my sisters come here too and they feel the same way). To the people saying that they came here and got a bad haircut, I think it's important to point out how hard it is to know exactly what a person likes when it's the first time that the stylist and customer work together. You have to build a rapport so that they understand what you like and what doesn't work. Furthermore, if you're ever unsatisfactory with a haircut, they're always willing to take you in later and try to fix it up, free of charge. I've done it a couple of times and they're always happy to do this. I'm a happy and loyal customer and will continue to come here for years. read more

I really want to write 2 reviews: Francine & Jesse - AWESOME! Lenny - Worst haircutting experience I've ever had. Went in for a bang trim and Lenny butchered my hair. Left nearly in tears as he'd cut them in a way that is unflattering, technically poor, and to add insult to injury, he was rude and blew me off when I voiced my concerns. I've never had such a poor experience and now am forced to pin my hair off my face to hide the terrible job he did. I went back a few days later to see if Francine could help. She couldn't believe the terrible haircut I got, was profusely apologetic on behalf of the salon, and assured me that she'd work with me to help grow it with the minimal trauma possible. She was full of kindness, concern, and reassurance and is invested in helping me through the aftermath of a bad haircut. I know it's just hair, but Lenny gave me REALLY BAD LOOKING hair. Like, incredibly bad. I could have done better had I given my 1 yr. old a pair of scissors and let him have at it. Patronize Francine & Jesse, but save yourself the agony and avoid Lenny at all costs! read more

Joseph really revived my hair from my previous trip to another salon. They left me with green hair when I originally wanted a darker blue gray. Just got the worst haircut of my life. The staff is incredibly nice, but I asked specifically for no short layers. I said the only thing I shy away from is short layers. I have extremely short layers now and a horrible horrible looking haircut. I didn't have the heart to tell the stylist that I hated it, but I've never had a haircut that made me feel so ugly. I am considering going in to ask for my money back. read more

Discovered this place more than a year ago, and it's become the only place I get my hair cut. It's a little on the pricey side, at least as far as guys hair cuts are concerned, but I've never once left there disappointed. Plus, the cut I've always gotten grows in so much better here than it has at other places, so I wind up needing trims less frequently. I've always gone to Louis and he's never done me wrong. When it comes to stuff like hair cuts, I'd rather support somebody local (lives in the neighborhood) 100 times out of 100 than go to some chain. I recommend! read more

I have never written a review on Yelp before but I felt that, after going to Harmony twice before and getting cuts that I revolutionized my hair style, this was the perfect time to start! I am a college student, and as any student in the city-undergraduatte or graduate-can attest to, sometimes beauty products and haircare are not super high on our priority lists to receive a high budget. However, every time I have been to Harmony, Joseph has blown me away with his unique style of cutting, and the manner in which he is able to know EXACTLY what I value about my hair as well as the most flattering way to cut it given the shape of my face (that is, he complements every contour). My mother is a do-it-all and do-it-yourself type of woman, so I can count the amount of times that I have been to a nail salon and hair salon on one hand because she was able to cut my hair, give me facials, and do my nails for every special occasion with a level of perfection that didn't render such places necessary. I had never trusted anyone else with my hair until I met Joseph in college and he insisted that a good grade in the class we had together deserved a haircut. I was very skeptical my Freshman year, but I took a leap of faith (my hair is one of the things I value most about myself, as you can see) and ventured out to Brooklyn to have him give me a new hairstyle. Again, having never been to a hair salon to have my haircut, I thought I would be a little adventurous, and I told him to change my hair just enough that it was noticeable, but to preserve it's length. I have a history of long, healthy hair (because I use many natural treatments)-I should also mention as a side note that he was able to tell me how much length mattered to me JUST by noticing how often I touch my hair-and I told him that I didn't want to walk out of there with a scary boy cut. The result was incredible. Joseph managed to layer my hair, and still preserve most of it's length, where I walked in with it down to my waist, and it was only shortened to about 1/4 of the way down my torso. In addition, the bangs he gave me were so well cut that I could flip them to either side and they would fall perfectly into place. As far as the environment of the Salon itself, there is nothing more enjoyable than seeing a family-run place where every member is so passionate about their work and places customer service as a first priority. Everyone working there was very helpful and welcoming. I don't know what I'm going to do if I move out of the city and don't have Harmony to take care of my hair! read more

Ugh. Too bad this place is down the street from my house because I have to walk by it everyday. I try to glare into their beautiful, misleading window to show them how much I still hate them after DESTROYING my hair. One of the brothers did it and obviously did not know how to highlight hair. I paid almost $200 to still have a brown stripe running through the middle of my head. Not only that, but my haircut was haphazard as well because midway through, his girlfriend walked in and all the attention was turned on to her. When I mentioned these mistakes, he offered to let me come back in a couple of days, but it was too late. I started silently crying at the register when I realized that this was actually real and that I really DID have to pay for this disaster. They noticed, said nothing, and let me pay and walk out of the door. read more

Go see Jessie at Salon Black & Blue. She does a FANTASTIC job on my thick, frizzy, curly-ish hair. Perfectly colors it, does a lovely blow out and her prices are very reasonable. Best of all, she is a super-lovely person. I cannot recommend her highly enough. read more

i've been a client for the past 2-3 years. had been getting the 'do done down the street at medusa (also on 7th ave) until the stylist i'd really liked moved on to the west coast in a different professional trajectory. i love this place. always welcoming. always a warm vibe and great tunes. as for hair. i've had mine hilighted and cut by the dad and the two sons whom are stylists. never a bad experience. each are dfferent in their approach and temperment. joseph has been doing a great job with my temperment AND with my long wavy caucasian hair, for color every 3 months and cut every six months. he's intense, focused, and you can tell he's enjoying what he does. highly recommend! read more

She is an highly skilled, amazing stylist, because she listens, she has great ideas, she looks at your style, your face. The low rating is for Daniella, not Harmony (she is the only one I have seen at the salon.) Daniella cut my hair several times for over a year and did a great job. However the last cut she gave me was hideous. She previously seemed to have skill and style, however this cut lacks both....which makes me think she was either messed up when she cut my hair, or she intentionally ruined it. Either way---reason enough to not go to her. I went to a few other stylists in the city and they all said the cut was irreparable. The best description of the cut was "a yarmulke on top of a mullet". She disregarded my request to just trim and keep the same style, and instead chopped it short and inconsistently. 4 months later and I still look like an 80's mom (not in a trendy way.) I wouldn't risk your hair with her. read more
