My family and I had rented an AirBNB for this weekend in Purcellville, but when we arrived we found…read morethat it had a rodent issue, and we have a toddler and an infant so we needed to find a new place to stay in a pinch. A quick internet search led us to the Purcellville home. Because it was so last minute, my wife called to confirm that they have availability, and notified them that we have an infant and a toddler with us. The host said they had availability and that the children were no problem. Although it does not say on their website, AFTER booking and paying my wife received the house rules and noticed that it said no children under 7, but the host already said it was ok so we arrived at the home.
Starting as soon as we arrived, the host was very unwelcoming and cold. We noticed the house had a large backyard so we asked if the kids could play outside, and she said no, because they have dogs. We had booked the orchard suite which is advertised as a private 3 bedroom suite, but it turns out it's just three disconnected rooms and a sitting area with no separation or privacy from the public areas; no door, no private bathroom. We asked if there were any other guests staying at the house that weekend and she said no, so we thought it was no big deal.
We decided to have some snacks in the common dining room, but the host walked in and told us that we needed to stay in the suite since the dining room is not included in our rental. This seemed ridiculous as it is a common space. It seemed like she just didn't want to be bothered by our presence.
We later went to eat dinner once again in the dining room since there isn't a great place to sit down and eat in the "suite", however the host was sitting in the corner silently the entire time while we ate which was very uncomfortable.
The dogs that the host mentioned earlier were barking in the late evening which kept waking up my children.
Things took a significant turn for the worse the next morning however. First of all, while playing with my kids in one of the bedrooms, I spotted an American dog tick on my hand. I had not gotten this outside, as I had barely even been outside in the days before other than trips to and from the car, and the tick was not on me when I woke up. We also noticed that there were a bunch of dead bugs in the corners of all the rooms, which made it seem like the place hadn't had a deep clean for a while.
We saw the house had quiet hours from 10pm to 8am and the kids were up early, so to be respectful we decided to go out for breakfast. The host had also told us previously that all they had for breakfast was yogurt anyway, which is unimpressive for a bed and breakfast. Upon returning from breakfast, my wife received a nasty text from the host saying that we need to "supervise our children" and that there can be no jumping, running, or screaming, and that we can let them outside to run around. Our children are very well behaved and we never left their side for a second. They were not jumping, running, or screaming. They were simply being kids and playing normally. My wife responded simply saying that we left the house early to respect the house quiet hours, and the host responded with another nasty text saying to supervise our children and respect the house policy. Note once again that we were the only guests in the house.
At that point we decided we were not comfortable staying a second night with the way the host was acting toward us. We booked a hotel and I called the host saying that I felt like she wanted us out, so let's make it amicable and refund the second night and we'll be out of her hair. She refused, saying that there's no refunds and that I need to have common sense and supervise my children better once again. The conversation got nasty and then ended unresolved. My wife sent another text trying to calmly explain our feelings on the situation and the host never responded.
Overall, this was probably the worst experience I've ever had at a vacation rental, BNB, or hotel. Avoid at all costs.
