I pretty much had the same exact experience as mochi b. I thought it was just me until I saw her review. So I'd like to speak up too. I went to Louise as my first consultation. She was so impatient with me, continuously reminded me of how popular she is on yelp and that she is a very busy person. And made me feel that she can care less about my business, as she reminded me that there are 7 more of me scheduled to see her that day. Then she asked if this was my first quote/estimate, then she quoted me $460 for some minor alterations. And then I felt pressured to make a decision right away and put down a 50% deposit. I then also went to Anne (ha, same as mochi b.) and had a MUCH better experience. I don't know if Louise's work is good or not, I'm sure it is, considering all the great reviews she's got. But for me, I didn't want to give someone my business if she doesn't even want it. Anne's quote for the exact same work was less than half of what Louise quoted me for. And she was just SO much nicer to deal with. My rating is completely based off of my personal experience with her on the consultation. read more

Most mass-market men's clothing today comes in two sizes: fat ass and super fat ass. OK, not really. Maybe it's more like "tall and thin" and "short and dumpy." Either way, it doesn't work for me. If you need an inseam under 34, the pants are probably just a 34 with the legs chopped off, putting the crotch at your knees or the waist under your armpits. If you're shorter and nonspherical but need a 16-neck shirt, everything below your armpits can form a knee-length male maternity dress. Try the younger, cooler brands and you find that their clientele must be 5'11"+ with a drug habit and get very little exercise. Move up a level, go conservative, and then there's Banana Republic with the slim/athletic fitted shirts and varied-inseam pants, but I'm sick of buying three of the same shirt, two of the same sweater, and various iterations of their khakis and jeans. So more and more, I look to Louise to make the clothing fit. I'll buy the neck and shoulders and she provides the waist and length (with lots of fabric removal). The tailoring prices are less than Nordstrom, and you can start with any shirt, not the overly conservative (and often more ill-fitting) brands sold at Nordstrom markups. The work is much higher quality than what guys normally get from the neighborhood dry cleaner and it's worth the small price difference. She can do more elaborate work, too--including custom-made shirts and pants and altering of polarfleece and nylon. I could drink a lot more beer and quit the whole Lake Merritt running thing to grow into Target clothes, but for now, I guess I have a tailor. read more

I brought in a swimsuit top to Louise not knowing if she could really do anything with it. I had a top that fit nicely but I hated the fabric of it. I had another top that didn't fit all that well, but it had the cutest pattern. Louise worked her magic and made my dream bikini top! She charged me 20 bucks and told me to bring cash. I embarrassingly forgot to bring cash and offered to walk over to the bank and come back. She insisted that I not, that she would take a check. I offered to make it for more than 20 for the inconvenience and again, she insisted that the price was 20 bucks and she would not take more!! I wrote her a check and went to the bank anyway, so I could give her a tip or something but she still wouldn't accept! She had just worked a miracle in creating my new favorite swimsuit, which had to have been a tedious task and I wanted to show her my gratitude for her work. So, instead I am writing this review and want to assure you that she is amazing, humble, kind, and forgiving. After receiving a referral from Anne Ventresco who told me her schedule was too hectic to accommodate me, I called Louise to schedule a meeting so that she could give me an estimate for my bridal gown alterations. I went at the agreed time, spent about 15-20 minutes where she was quite brusque - but I brushed that off because of the other reviewers here who mentioned this - and left with a quote of $325 (cash only since it would be a rush job) and assurances that I could drop off the dress the next day, have a fitting the following week and get the alterations done in time. I should mention that I had received an estimate and booked fittings with Wee Scotty in SF but wanted to see if I could support a local business in my hometown. However, the estimate she gave was $125 MORE than what Wee Scotty quoted for a simple hem and french bustle. I was going to call Louise back and tell her I would decline her services, but an hour after of leaving her business, she called to say that she checked her calendar and couldn't do alterations on my gown as she said she could. Twice! I thought this was incredibly unprofessional - even if I wasn't going to go with her - because I called prior to meeting with her to explain what I needed, she said it would be ok, I should come in, then met with her when she assured me she could provide alteration services. My review isn't of her work but of the process one goes through - it was rather annoying to spend the time speaking by phone, setting up the appointment, seeing her in-person, being treated rudely, just to find out the whole thing was a waste of time (both in terms of her inflated prices and inability to accurately tell you her schedule/availability). read more

Louise is the BEST! I bought my dream wedding gown from Gesinee's Bridal and also had them do my alterations. Between the time I ordered my dress and the time my dress arrived I lost about 30 lbs...so I had a significant amount of alterations that needed to be done. When I went in for my second fitting the dress fit pretty well (so I thought). They told me that since the dress fit well I didn't need any additional alterations and I could pick the dress up in 3 weeks and it would be pressed and ready to go. Three weeks later (which was 1 week before my wedding) I picked up my perfectly pressed dress and signed off that everything was fine. The next morning as I was looking at my dress hanging up in the closet something just didn't seem right. I decided to try the dress on again. To my surprise the dress was huge. Not sure if it was stress of planning the wedding or what but the dress was swimming on me! Coincidentally I had an appointment with Louise the same day for her to do minor alterations to my after party dress. You can imagine Louise's surprise when she opened the door to find me standing there with a HUGE wedding gown bag. I explained the situation and tried the dress on. I literally broke down in tears as Louise pinned the dress and told me how much work was needed for the gown to fit properly. She also pinned up the bustle to show me how it SHOULD have looked. Although Louise suggested that I take the dress back to Gesinee's and MAKE them fix the dress, I was too stressed to deal with them and ultimately I had more faith in Louise. After paying Gesinee's $300 for the initial alterations I really didn't want to pay any more for the dress, but I was confident that Louise was going to be able to get the job done right! I came back to Louise 5 days later and the dress looked GREAT. I actually lost a few more lbs, but she told me that was ok and had the dress completely finished the next day. When I came back and put the dress on I couldn't believe how I looked. The dress was perfect! And I can't even describe how beautiful the bustle was:) She really hooked me up! Louise has a great attitude and excellent customer service skills. She told me that what the bride wants is the most important and she aims to please. My ONLY regret was that I didn't know about Louise earlier. I'm sooo happy that Louise was able to do my rush job. My husband and ALL of our wedding guests thought I looked stunning. WHY SHE ROCKS: Louise has worked with women's apparel for 35 years. She came highly recommended on the UC Berkeley Parents Network. She's extremely friendly but speaks matter-of-factly in a sassy Caribbean accent (she told me I had to hit the gym, which I did), and her rates are very reasonable for her skill and knowledge. She works out of her humble home-studio along Lake Merritt. Her fitting room is filled to the brim with projects, including magazine pictures and sketches for dresses to be designed and sewn from scratch. A portion of the room is curtained off so you can dress in privacy. SERVICES: Louise did the alterations on my couture wedding dress, which I bought super cheap from a salon in the Boston area. Louise and I did an initial consultation and two fittings wherein we shortened the shoulder strap, took in the bodice, let out the dress, hemmed the bottom and added a one-point bustle, all for $220. My weight yo-yo'd during my engagement, hence the more costly alterations (letting out the dress and taking in the bodice). TIP: Assuming you're getting alterations for a special occasion dress, always wear your day-of undergarments and shoes to your fitting sessions, as you'll want to make sure everything fits just right that day. I also brought my bridal hat (no veil) and brooches that I wanted to pin on my dress. AVOID: The tailor's pins on the ground, especially since you don't want to get a snag in your dress (my wedding dress was all silk charmeuse). Might as well pick the pins up and hand them to Louise or stick 'em on the wall. read more

I had an urgent need for an alteration. I was leaving town the following morning at dawn. I hadn't acquired the garment to be altered until the last minute. I called Louise, not having spoken to her in 4 years. (I'm not the most prompt person to get my alterations addressed, absent imminent playoff needs.) She had a busy schedule, which certainly didn't surprise me given her great skills and service. She sensed the urgency, as well as the limited nature of my alteration, and invited me to bring it by. While not promising instant turn-around, this is essentially what she provided. I noticed she even appeared to prioritize my alteration even before her own lunch. This stood out to me because I departed her store only moments before the first of her two back-to-back large appointments were to arrive. While I wouldn't expect such great above expectations service were I to make another unreasonable request, it also wouldn't surprise me if, in fact, Louise would respond in an way that's again above expectations. Louise is AMAAAAZING. Not only is she an incredibly gifted tailor, she was such a joy to get to know personally. I had a lot of strange issues with my wedding dress and Louise was patient throughout the whole process, making me feeling confident that it would be perfect in the end. I felt genuinely taken care of by Louise and felt that she truly cared about making it right. We had initially planned for 3 fittings but I probably went to her workspace, i don't know, 5 times?? She was extremely accommodating and even met me and my mom twice in two days, at 8am no less, to make sure my mom would be able to see the dress with the alteration we were doing. I got married 8/21/2010 so this review is a little overdue but I really have to write about my fantastic experience with Louise. First, she is an excellent professional: she knows her craft and delivers on what she says she can do with your dress. We met for three fittings and each time she was sweet, generous with her time, and added to my general excitement level about getting married. The dress fit perfectly and looked gorgeous. I read some of the reviews below regarding a perceived attitude and I have to disagree with these statements. Louise is a consummate professional and is blunt about what she can or cannot do with your dress. If people want a professional to treat them like a bridesmaid then they should hang out with their bridesmaids before or after going to a fitting with Louise. You aren't paying her to be your buddy, right? You're paying her to do a fantastic alteration on your wedding dress at a very reasonable price. I think some of the undertones to the statements below are a little troubling but I'm going to assume the best and write the undertones off to the panic/stress of wedding planning. Go with Louise if you want the highest skill-level, a great price point, honesty, and warmth. I will definitely continue to use her for alterations to other big event dresses. read more

Louise is wonderful, and I recommend her highly for wedding dress alterations! Her prices are very reasonable, her work is on-point, and she's both sweet and honest. What better combination could you want? She worked on my wedding dress and made what could have been a very stressful situation so simple and easy I couldn't believe it. After a mishap with my original dress, I had to start from scratch terrifyingly close to my big day. I found an alternate dress but needed a bustle and a hem on a lace dress with just five weeks left. Anyone who knows anything about weddings knows that could be a recipe for disaster. Seamstresses need time. I was prepared for the worst when I called, but Louise graciously took me in despite my last minute needs. I had ordered a dress from BHLDN, and I thought it fit ok. But when I showed up for my appointment, Louise told me she thought it was a size too big, and showed me exactly where there was too much fabric. (What bride isn't excited to hear that she's smaller than she thought?!) Louise worked through the math with me to see if it was more economical to rush order a new dress in the right size or if she should just alter everything herself. It turned out it was less expensive for me just to get a new dress and for her to do more minor alterations. I really appreciated that she was so honest with me and that she saved me some money. I rush ordered a new dress, scheduled a second appointment for a few days later, and Louise turned the dress around in just two weeks! It fit perfectly, looked incredible, and I got so many compliments. Some other reviewers remarked that Louise's comments are rude. But I just think she's really honest, which I found so refreshing. She's like your no-nonsense aunt who tells you what looks good and what doesn't, what works and what won't. It's your wedding dress, for goodness sakes! You want to look amazing. And who better to tell you what works with your body than the woman who's job it is to make your dress fit like a glove. She knows. Trust her judgment. And FYI: for those having trouble finding parking, your best bet is to circle around to Macarthur Blvd so that you can turn right on Grand. There's almost always one parking space on Grand just east of the freeway that's open. It's only a short walk to her studio from there. read more

Ladies (and gentlemen) - I cannot recommend Louise highly enough! She is a true professional as well as a genuinely kind person. I found her on yelp and messaged her about tailoring my wedding dress - a complicated piece with a lot of delicate detailing. She was able to see me within the same day. She is incredibly knowledgeable about her work - not many tailors could have done what she did with my dress - taken out the lining underneath intricately laced sleeves, created a backless shape where there was none before. Only someone truly talented could have accomplished what she did. And she was incredibly affordable!! I had the entire dress totally reworked, with multiple fittings, for about $200! The best part - she is also an incredibly welcoming, sweet and unpretentious person. I did a lot of wedding dress shopping and searching for tailors in the area and I have to say - some folks just don't know how to treat people. Yes, they might have a valuable skill and deal with high-end clothing - but a bad attitude is something you do not want anywhere near your wedding day. And trust me - if you don't have a huge budget, you definitely run the risk of encountering many subpar vendors who are incompetent and will create more work and stress for you during your wedding. What a relief to find Louise! She was positive, friendly, professional and competent! What a relief and a gem! Louise made me feel comfortable, welcomed and attended to all while maintaining a high level of professional detail and care. What more could you ask for? She was so lovely and professional that I am going to take her a bouquet of flowers to say thank you! I lost my mind and bought a $7000 dress. OMG, it was so scary to ask a stranger to lay into it with scissors and thread, but Louise understood and appreciated every spendy detail of my little masterpiece and altered it expertly. Specifically, my wedding gown had seamless guipure lace, and she was able to take it in through the hips without a hint of a seam showing anywhere. It was like the lace was woven on my body. She nipped it and tucked it until the fit was perfect, gave good advice on how to wear it, and was so much fun to be with that I miss not having any more fittings to attend. read more

Louise took a sample dress I purchase, shortened it significantly, bustled it, made a belt from scratch with beading I purchased and took it in within a matter of 5 weeks. Her work was incredibly detailed and she was very flexible and patient with me and my requests. I felt beautiful on my wedding day and am so thankful I was able to work with her. Like others have said, Louise is VERY busy. Book at least 10 weeks before your wedding and when you go in for your first fitting know your schedule so that you can make appointments for all your remaining fittings. When you make those appointments, stick to them, because with Louise being so busy, it's very hard to reschedule last minute! Louise is a wonderful seamstress. I heard about her talents through word of mouth, and made an appointment. Long story short, she was a pleasure to work with and did truly excellent work. Yes, parking can be an issue in the area but I never had much trouble, just plan to arrive 5-10min early and you'll be fine. Unlike other tailors who give you a set number of fittings which you have to schedule before you know how your body will change, Louise charges a flat rate and brings you back as many times as she thinks will be needed in order for the dress (and you) to look great. As someone who never really gains or loses much weight, I wasn't expecting my body to change much, but it did (just like Louise told me it would)-- I lost quite a bit. She was able to hand sew everything back into place and have it ready and waiting for me when the only time I could find to pick up the dress was 10PM on a Friday night. She was very helpful as I didn't know what the right undergarments were supposed to be, etc. She was professional, friendly, fast and efficient. I brought my wedding dress and my MOH's dress to Louise. I have no idea who these dresses were designed for or what crazy form the manufacturer uses to make them but they fit horribly off the rack. My dress needed to be hemmed. She noticed an extra tuff of material on butt part of the dress; she suggested taking in the hip. I also got a custom veil made for $30--buying one from a boutique would have cost several hundreds of dollars, easily. The MOH dress needed to be hemmed and was large through most of the dresses. It needed to be taken in through the whole thing. I had several fittings; my MOH had two. Louise kept my dress until 2 weeks before my wedding in case I lost any more weight. She worked her magic; our dresses fit marvelously! Louise is a professional and diligent business owner, she is skilled at her art. As a business owner, she the only person running her business and keeps a very busy and tight schedule. I'd suggest being mindful of your appointment time. Louise is a genius and the most patient woman in the world. She is an absolute joy to work with and her work is phenomenal. I couldn't have been happier with the experience or the end result, and her rates are phenomenal. Wedding planning can be stressful, and one thing I never had to stress about was how my dress would look on my wedding day. I am a perfectionist and Louise is too - she wants to make sure every detail is just right. Louise scheduled extra fittings with me at no extra charge to make sure everything was perfect. Every fitting was relaxing and enjoyable because I knew I was in good hands. The dress I ordered was many sizes too large, and Louise essentially recreated the dress to fit my body. The dress also had a deep V back, and Louise devised a genius system with loops and clips so that I could wear a bra with a low back extender. The dress couldn't have fit more perfectly. When I was trying on my dress and veil, I accidentally snagged my veil on a pin and tore a tiny hole in the veil. It was completely my fault and you could barely see the hole, but I didn't want to walk down the aisle with a hole in my veil (even if I was the only one who knew it was there). Louise kindly offered to take the lace off my veil, create a new veil, and sew the lace back onto it -- and she didn't even charge me for it! She is so incredibly kind and above all else, she really wants her brides to be happy. To put this in perspective, I told another seamstress about the tiny hole in the veil and she waved me off and said not to worry about it and that no one would see it. Louise never dismissed a single concern I had, no matter how small it was. Here's another example of Louise's incredible patience and kindness: after I bought my veil, I realized that the lace on it stopped very abruptly rather than angling off subtly. I showed my sister and she saw what I was talking about, but she didn't think it was a big deal. When I showed Louise, she understood my concern and offered to add lace to it for me. I was able to get a piece of matching lace in diamond white, not the soft ivory I needed. Louise saved the day again by dipping the lace in tea to match it to the exact color of the original lace. She did this several times until the color was an exact match with the original lace. Louise was amazing to work with and my wedding dress ended up fitting perfectly! She made custom made lace sleeves for my dress and ended up finding matching lace from the manufacturer who made the dress itself! She's a no-nonsense woman from the Caribbean who will tell it like it is, so if you need someone to pander to you the way most wedding companies do, then she may not be the person for you. She's also a bit hard of hearing so she may not always hear what you say the first time around, but she does quality work and finishes everything in time. Louise did an amazing job with my wedding dress. She took my hand beaded dress from a size 12 to a size 2 in under 3 weeks!! I was able to go in for 4 fittings where each time we talked about the dress and what we should do. She not only took it in, but she hemmed it and but a second lining in both the bodice and skirt since it was a bit shear and you could see the outline of my tattoo on my back underneath it. Working with Louise was AMAZING... I first contacted her to make a dress for me but didn't call in enough time so she was unable to make one. I then found a dress somewhere else and needed alterations which brought me back to her. She immediately when I called her check the date of my wedding and setup an appointment that weekend to check dress and see if she could do the work and had enough time. During that first appointment she scheduled all dress future fittings, provided me a quote and gave me the option to check others for lower prices. During those appointments she was very professional but also very motherly she even gave me tips to lose weight.
