We were able to book a 9:30 am Sat appointment online and it was nice they had us answer some questions to pair us up with a dog. You can also see which dogs are available to be taken out for a field trip from their website, since they have a filter option. At their brief orientation they'll give you a pamphlet with suggestions on where to visit, but they are all mostly taken from the Lava Dogs Hawaii site if you want to plan ahead. There are also some suggestions on dog friendly places to eat. They'll also provide a backpack with all the supplies for the day - some food, water bowl, water, towel, toys, poop bag, etc. All dogs will have a leash and a bandanna advertising for adoption, and the shelter will provide a seat belt for the dog to use in the car. The only catch is that you have to bring the dog back before 4 pm. We got paired with Riley, a roughly 4-year old girl who was a former stray. Riley was a bundle of energy and a great hiking buddy! My fiance isn't much of a dog person but really warmed up to Riley (and even ran with her on the beach). You don't really feel exhausted when you have a dog buddy to hike with. I would caution you'll want to keep an eye on where you take the dogs so they don't overheat, also because the hot lava rocks can be rough on their paws. Although Kaloko-Honokohau National Park is dog friendly, the guide at the visitor center suggested we take the trail head at the harbor to explore Honokohau Beach and the Ai'Opio Fish Trap due to heat concerns (dogs have passed out on the trails through the lava rock fields). I hope the sweet girl gets adopted - they do have programs set up for folks from the mainland to adopt. If your island accommodation is dog friendly, they even have a program set up to let you have a shelter dog stay overnight. Totally recommend looking into taking out a shelter dog, and be sure to book an appointment online and research (I suspect Story C. didn't do this, hence the 1-star review).

This tour is 2 hours long and your donation for the tour is tax deductible. You are saving abandoned parrots or parrots who have out lived their owners. We were able to interact with several different types of parrots and feed some of the macaws. The stories were hard to hear but I think we need to fully understand the commitment to care for a bird that can outlive you and the commitment we need to make so that rescues can keep care of these amazing words.

WARNING: Functions as a Private Collection/Exhibit, Not an Ethical Adoption Facility…read more Our visit revealed significant and alarming welfare deficiencies that fall well below basic standards of care. Many outdoor enclosures provide inadequate coverage, leaving the birds exposed to heavy rain and common tropical storms. Crucially, we observed that the enclosures contain no enrichment whatsoever--no chewing wood or stimulating toys--a severe failure that causes psychological distress in parrots. At a basic level, most enclosures were not predator proof. Furthermore, the owner, Dorothy, is highly manipulative in her approach to fundraising, depending on emotional "sob stories" to solicit substantial donations. This aggressive fundraising stands in stark contrast to the basic welfare failures and the facility's non-existent adoption service. Please be aware: Do not mistake the emotional appeals for genuine rehabilitation and adoption work. Your donations will support a public exhibit and collection, not ethical re-homing. We traveled a considerable distance (7.5 hours round trip) and paid the $100 viewing fee under the pretense that this facility was an active avian adoption center. We found that Parrots in Paradise is not prioritizing adoption whatsoever; it operates as a private collection focused on tourism revenue. The staff actively advertise adoptions, but the process is non-existent, confirming that the collection of birds for tourist money is the true priority.

It warms my heart to support a good initiative like that. There is a cute lobby, a transitionary room to keep the kitties from escaping, then you're in! There were maybe 3-4 adult cats and a dozen kittens roaming around. The older cats like pets while the kittens love to play. There is something for everyone! There are creative seats that keep you next to perches and cat trees so you can hang with the cats. It's a longer space, and the kitttens loved to zoom around! Toys and enrichment are everywhere! I loved chatting with the owner about her cafe! She was very kind and informative about her work. This experience made my day, and I would recommend supporting!

It's in the back of a little mall but look out for their sign. They have such cute merchandise. I ended up getting a t shirt, and bracelets and I love them! The lady who worked there is so nice! She was telling us about all the work they do in rescuing and adopting our cats and I love it and loved being able to support this cause! CAT ROOM EXPERIENCE: Absolutely loved the experience of hanging out with all the kitties! They were so cute and the room they are in is so spacious and cozy! I bought some treats as well and fed them to the kitties. My family did the same! If I ever come back to Kona, I will definitely come back here! I love supporting places like these that help animals!

With less income than I used to have, and wanting to spay my female dog, to ensure no more puppies, I wanted to do the responsible thing. My Vet wanted around $500, which I just couldn't afford. Humane Society to the rescue! For a $50 donation, I could get our fur baby, Phoebe, spayed. I was able to donate more than $50, but was so grateful for the fabulous, caring, professional services. Spay coordinators Rhanie and Aimee, took care of all the details, and were so professional, responsive, warm and caring. They tenderly cradled our shaking dog, before and after surgery. All the staff and volunteers were truly fabulous. And the Humane Society campus is so beautiful...from the dog parks to the Welcome and Education Center. It was exciting to see the hospital, under construction, too. Our Humane Society provides so many great services, and I am proud to be a supporter! Phoebe is now resting comfortably. I found this belly protector on Amazon, so she doesnt need to wear an uncomfortable cone collar, to keep her from licking her incision. Our last fur baby, Bodhi, will get neutered when he is 8 or 9 months old, after hormones allow for bone development. :)

We just moved to hilo on Jan 4th and before we came here I put in multiple applications for 2 different puppies, on Friday I called this place to confirm that they still had puppies because we wanted to adopt one or two. Not ONCE did the lady on the phone advise that we weren't allowed to purchase 2 puppies at a time, nor did she mentioned before even brining a pet home the application has to be confirmed on their site (which I completed a couple weeks before we moved), plus it will take like 3 days before even bringing the puppy home. That aside, we walked in with our 2 boys excited to bring a puppy home, and when we went to the counter the lady out right said we won't be able to take a puppy today due the one million reasons that she mentioned which made no sense and made it seem like I had no Idea what liter syndrome meant. My sons were bent outta shape because of those words. FYI, next time, talk to me and not to everyone else in the room behind me. We purchased dogs from humane society countless years and to have to be turned down because we are not a right fit family for puppies is like a slap in the face especially when we bought our 2 puppies from this place at the same time. I feel this decision was more based on a personal choice on my response to the first lady I spoke to, instead of hearing what questions I had she kept telling me that we couldn't have two puppies due to litter syndrome. We understand littermate syndrome, but when you take correcrive actions and extensive training with your dogs, that won't happen as we do our own. Do we all really know their personalities? No, but as the owners, it's our due diligence to teach them right from wrong. Studies are saying "littermate syndrome" is not even a real thing. We label problems with two young dogs as "having Littermate Syndrome," because we absolve ourselves from the responsibility to fix problems that humans created and can't resolve. See, the problem isn't the dogs. The problem is peoples ability to address their individual needs. It's easier to label a syndrome than to just give more TLC and understand stand them. On that note, you sent me this email the day after saying I'm not a fit? So much for waiting 3 days and calling to see if we are a fit when we meet with the counselor. That is ok! I went to Rainbow friends animal sanctuary and we rehomed a dog, and someone just so happily allowed us to rehome their 2 puppies that were left at their front door This place is such a disappointment. Going forward, I will not recommend this place to anyone anymore. Even though my 2 other dogs came from here, and we love them dearly. This place will be the last on my list now, not #1 it took less then 24hrs for them to tell my family we are not a fit before even giving us the chance. The slogan should not be providing them a good home. The lady after us asked for 2 kittens, and you were gladly open to having her adopt them after she just mentioned her current cats' lack of health for many reasons that did not match up! Go figure! The care you give for cats is not the same as dogs? Why is that? Should we not give the animals all the same care, love, and treatment? Seems like it's a preference here and bad choices! I'm done venting, but if you are looking for dogs and puppies there are many other adoption places to go that will give you better service then this place its sad that I recommended this place to a bunch of families and they actually said they were turned down too and got their dogs else where. Please feel free to share your family requirements and what makes the best families for these animals? All these people are opening their homes, and you're denying it, but crying that you have no shelter space.......this could be one of the biggest reasons. Look where you lack the experience, which is assumptions and judgment!
