They have items such as: antique and vintage lighting, hardware, furniture, miscellaneous architectural fixtures, and so much more. And lots of these items come from local homes and buildings, so you are helping "recycle the past" as they like to say. While moseying around the shop, I inquired about a couple of light fixtures that were out of reach and they were very friendly and helpful when following up with questions. It was not difficult to find someone to assist me at all. The prices are at a premium here because you are finding unique items that are in excellent condition and often times hard to find. I found a 8pc set of drawer pulls that I was hunting for an antique dresser for years. Patience and luck came together for me at Old Portland Hardware. Looking forward to my next visit!

I walk around the entire footprint then turn around and walk the other direction because different items will catch your eye. If you are seeking an occasional chair, they have so many styles and cool pieces. Wish I had room for more! They just don't make these styles anymore or of the same quality. They usually have a large selection of couches also in shades of teal, orange, avocado just like on The Brady Bunch. Even plaid, if that's your thing. And of course boomerang shaped coffee tables to complete your seating area. There are so many unique one of a kind pieces too, like an upright piano transformed into a bar. OMG, I wish I had the space for it! What I always have room for is unique bar ware and glasses and they have lots to choose from. Lots of metal and sculptural wall art which really gives a room personality especially when complimenting paintings or prints. They have a large selection of table lamps but it's the hanging pendants that I really love. Perusing this store ignites so many memories! I see items that take me back to my childhood home, pieces I haven't thought about in years. My face lights up remembering a curved side table, a Sputnik light and metal flower wall art similar to what adorned our den. The sad thing is that the molded sawdust is sheathed with veneer, thin sheets of wood peeled from often old growth trees or endangered tropical hardwoods. Often that tree that took a hundred years or more to grow, is being used to make a piece of furniture with a life of 3-5 years. Their specialty is mid-century modern from the Scandinavian invasion. Those Vikings and their furniture! They refinish or reupholster the pieces as necessary and the price reflects that. If you have ever priced having a piece of furniture shot with a couple coats of lacquer by a professional, who also, by the way, is being paid to properly handle lacquer, which is very toxic, you know. But those prices are comparable to the new price in its time. And you are getting a piece of furniture you can pass down generations. In fact, some of it may become design auction material in the future. They were good on my visit with cadenzas, occasional chairs, classic Knoll chairs, a few sofas, lighting. They also gather up some industrial artifacts and repurpose them, if that fits your aesthetics. One of their newest spec pieces is a walnut ping pong table, which could also be used as a dining table. This item would fit well into the tech startup world. If you are an art director or set decorator they would be a good resource. The Good Mod has moved around and as of this writing are up a creaky elevator or quite a few stairs on the fourth floor. But that gives them a new big cheap space. And note to new arrivers decorating your Pearl condos - if you can rock this style, you can patronize a great Portland reuse business. You can even fib a little and claim your hip grandparents/parents/you bought it new! The Good Mod cleans up and restores furniture from the mid-century modernist age. Reduce, reuse, recycle! Even more, you're making a decision to opt out of the consumerism that is largely landfill Amazon stuff. If you follow on Instagram, they'll show their "haul" for a particular date. I don't live nearby, so I'll often try to get there for one or two pieces they showed and find that even a day later the item is gone. They just sell stuff fast! This makes it hit or miss I wish they had multiple locations, perhaps one in Clackamas from our transition center? I imagine the intention behind this non-profit would be appreciated nationwide. Big dreams, I know. I believe the place is run by volunteers (or mostly volunteers), which is a beautiful thing. Outside they'll have pots and wrought iron items and furniture. Inside has crafting items and hardware, tools and kitchenware, more furniture and all sorts of goodies. It's smaller than a thrift store, which I appreciate because sometimes the huge places can be overwhelming. Ultimately, I recommend you visit. Maybe you'll find something, maybe not, but if you prefer well-made, older goods, you'll eventually find something you'll very much love.
