I haven't eaten at Lowake since the late 1970s. I remember that staggering moment when they delivered my hamburger. I had a reputation for eating two hamburgers anywhere they served hamburgers. After plowing through half of this burger and slipping into a food coma, I took the other half home with me. When you walked into the old steakhouse, the walls were dirty yellow from smoke and grease and the ceiling and walls were covered with business cards. I ate lunch there once when there were two tornados out in the adjacent field. The waitress walked up and said, "Excuse me gentlemen, did you know there are two tornados outside?" My friend whom we called 'Pop' said, "Well, that'll be fine, can we go ahead and place our order." The waitress took our order and we continued to monitor the tornados. KC steak for two would easily feed four. And everything they offered was great. I know people in San Antonio, Waco and Austin who would fly in to eat at the famous Lowake Steak House. God knows how many times it's burned down. Glad to see it's still around. read more

My wife and I decided to travel the hour to get here from Abilene just to get out of the house one night. I'm a huge fan of out of the way places and this is definately out of the way. I had read some reviews about this place here in Yelp a few months prior to going (Which is how I found out about the establishment). I should have paid more attention to the portion descriptions because when my steak was placed in front of me I couldn't believe it. The piece of meat was massive. It wasn't the best steak I've ever had but it was really good. The service was excellent and they were fairly busy. I'm pretty sure we got there at the tail end of the dinner rush. The salad bar and sides were decent. I can't complain about the cost due to the amount of food we got. Is it a place I'm going to go to every weekend, no, but it's worth the trip every now and then. I give it 5 stars, not because it was the best steak I have ever had but because it was cooked perfect and lightly seasoned with Huge portions! I had the KC Steak medium rare. It was closer to medium than rare but, for me, perfect. Red center but the juice was more clear than red. Onion rings are also huge portions. The fish is also very good. The food is just OK. The highlights were the jalapeño ranch and the size of the steaks for the price. Everything else was kind of a miss. This was our first time here and it was a Friday night so maybe we just had an off experience? The salad bar was not impressive at all, but that's not a huge deal to me. I had the ribeye and my husband had the filet and both were over cooked. The steaks were huge, but just tasted like powdered garlic with not much other flavor. We got "loaded" baked potatoes which means you get a potato and then you get packets of butter and sour cream. Service was pretty good and the atmosphere in the room we were sat in worked well for our large party. The host took our order and brought us water, they were short wait staff and kitchen staff. He didn't come back to refill our drinks and we finally stopped another waitress to get us refills after 45 minutes. When our food was finally delivered two orders were incorrect and all orders were Luke warm. I was brought a baked potato but no butter or sour cream. I left not eating my potato. Poor service and mediocre lukewarm food as it was served. The waitress said it was her fault as the host had helped her out due to her having a different table that needed service. I gave two stars rather than one because I have had good food and service on previous visits with anticipation for today's family meal being a let down. read more

What a disaster! My wife took her mother to eat here for her birthday, and the electricity went out! It is illegal to sell food at a restaurant that does not have any power to run refrigerators, a/c or heaters, fire detectors or lights! They had to eat their food by the light of their iPhones! Then paid $80 for the meal they ate in the dark and heat! If I had been there they wouldn't have paid or stayed to eat in a dump like this, but my wife felt bad for the waitress, she apologized, but still offers NO discount or anything ! I can't believe they didn't give them that meal for free, just to insure that this horrible story wouldn't get out!! Do not go out here to eat! You are literally putting your health in danger!!! And if that wasn't bad enough, our daughter used the bathroom there and the toilet water went all over here! What an end to a disastrous embarrassing birthday meal!! read more

I ate at Lowake Inn on Sunday, July 17th. When we walked in it reeked of cigarette smoke. Service was fast and accurate. The onion rings were delicious the highlight of the visit. Two of us had steak fingers. Both orders burned. I think the grease was old. The baked potatoes were overly baked and had a burned taste. Another person had the fried shrimp! She said it was good. Another diner had steak and it was cooked properly. Salad bar needed more ice to keep salad crisp. Don't think we will be back there any time soon. read more

Well, after hearing about the Lowake Steak House for several years, we thought we'd go down and try it. About an hour drive for us. The salad bar was good. Baked potato and Texas Toast was good. We ordered our T-bone well done. What we received was a rare fatty T-bone. Sent it back, but they cooked it too fast, and it was burnt a bit on the outside, and still too much pink on the inside. If you like your steak rare, and fatty, you're gonna love Lowake Steak House. read more

I really don't get the hype for this place. I was with a group of 8 people who loved it, but I'm an out-of-towner so maybe I just didn't mesh with the Lowake vibe I guess. My steak was thin, overcooked, drowning in a pool of grease. The sides were also drowning in grease. Not just oily, i mean everything including the meat was served in a pool of grease. It was utterly disgusting and my steak was inedible. The only positive was the portion size. So if you don't mind drinking oil and fat while chewing cardboard-type over-well-done tbone steak (that I asked for "medium") then go here because the portion size of the steaks is enormous. I really wish I could give no stars. Please save your money and go to Perini Ranch if you want a good /authentic steak house. Ok so where to begin. I didn't mind that the place looks like a broken down shack...or even that they have an old bath tub out front with dirt and weeds growing out of it....but the food was not up to par for a steak house AT ALL. I had the small steak dinner which is sirloin..it was cooked to order Medium..however it was fatty and did not taste good. I specifically asked the waitress if the mashed potatoes were real or out of a box..she said they were real...well they were not...if you ever had KFC mashed potatoes these were identical and clearly the brown gravy was from a jar. My husband had the filet mignon it was $28.00...he ordered it Medium..it was WELL DONE...the one thing about a steak house is that if NOTHING ELSE your steak should always come cooked to order...it was not...$28.00 down the drain. The salad bar left a lot to be desired...I mean if you have to serve Iceberg lettuce at least offer some italian type oil and vinegar dressing instead of all fattening ranch dressings.
